International Maritime English
Conference
FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT
INTERNATIONAL MARITIME ENGLISH CONFERENCE
First Announcement
IMEC 27
12 – 15 October 2015
Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology
Johor Bahru - Malaysia
Organised by Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology International Maritime Lecturers Association
IMLA-IMEC
It is my pleasure to invite you to participate and contribute to IMEC 27, which will be hosted by my
institution, Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology (NMIT), at our campus in Nusajaya, Johor,
Malaysia. NMIT is a Malaysian-Dutch institute of higher learning with its HQ based in Johor, and has
strong links and partnerships with Dutch MET institutions and the maritime industry.
The theme of the conference is “Maritime English: Navigating the Future” which recognises IMO's
intentions to promote and enhance "effective communication" at sea in general, and the revision by
IMLA-IMEC senior members of IMO Model Course 3.17, Maritime English, in particular. This will be
an excellent follow-on from our IMEC 26 in the Netherlands.”
Prof Malek Pourzanjani
President
Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology
The IMLA International Maritime English Conference is a no-border forum: a round table for discussions
on sea-related communication problems concerning a universally accepted language, that of Maritime
English. Teachers and other parties from all over the world dedicated to mediating in the process of
maritime language acquisition are invited to freely present their achievements, share experiences and
exchange ideas.
The first IMLA International Maritime English Conference (formerly the Workshop on Maritime English –
WOME) was held in Hamburg, Germany in 1981. Since then international meetings have been held in Saint-
Malo, France, 1983; La Spezia, Italy, 1985; Plymouth, UK, 1987; Cadiz, Spain, 1989; Lisbon, Portugal, 1991;
Amsterdam, Netherlands, 1993; Gdynia, Poland, 1995; Malmö, Sweden, 1997; Shanghai, China, 1998, Rijeka,
Croatia, 1999; Dalian, China, 2000; Varna, Bulgaria, 2001; Qingdao, China, 2002; Saint Petersburg, Russia
2003; Manila, The Philippines, 2004; Marseille, France, 2005; Rotterdam, the Netherlands, 2007; Shanghai,
China 2008; Szczecin, Poland, 2009; Alexandria, Egypt, 2010; Constanta, Romania 2011, Yangon, Myanmar,
2012, Istanbul, Turkey, 2013 and Terschelling, the Netherlands, 2014. Each event has confirmed the
growing interest in and importance of this field since the development of technologies and the respective
updates in requirements concerning safer shipping, along with the increasing number of multilingual and
multicultural crews, which impose new criteria on communications at sea worldwide (see also the IMEC
website www.imla.co/imec/).
Paper abstracts and proposals for workshop sessions are both welcome. However, priority will be
given to workshops and other interactive contributions. All practical contributions concerning
relevant class and out-of-class activities as well as published and non-published materials/ resources
displayed in posters, presented as demonstrations or shown in exhibitions will be especially appreciated.

Internation Airport (KLIA) which is situated319km away from the Netherlands Maritime Institute of
Technology. Delegates are encouraged to book a flight to Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Seeing as Johor
Bahru is located at the Southern tip of peninsular Malaysia, delegates are encouraged to book a flight from
their respective countries to Kuala Lumpur first before booking another flight to Johor Bahru through Senai
International Airport.
Kuala Lumpur (KUL) – Johor Bahru (JHB)
From KLIA, delegates will then have a few choices of connecting flights to Johor Bahru:
Malaysia Airlines departs from KLIA.
AirAsia and FireFly are two of Malaysia’s budget airlines and departs from KLIA2. There is a train service that
links KLIA to KLIA 2. The fare is Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) 2 and the tickets can be bought upon arrival at

The connecting flight to Johor Bahru is approximately 45 minutes. Upon arrival, NMIT will provide the
delegates with a shuttle service from the airport to their respective hotels which are 15 to 20 minutes away.
This free shuttle service will be provided twice on 11 October 2015 at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m..

Arriving in Singapore
Delegates are also given the option to land in Singapore through Changi International Airport. However, this
may cause inconveniences as travel time from Singapore to Johor Bahru may extend to 2 hours or more as it
will require the delegates to cross over to Johor Bahru via the Causeway.
There is a direct bus from Changi International Airport to Johor Bahru which will drop the delegates off at the
Kotaraya II Terminal. NMIT will provide a free shuttle service at 3 p.m. from Kotaraya II Terminal to the
respective hotels.
