Images Billings Arts Association MAY 2015 A newsletter for the artists and writers of the Billings Arts Association to share our creativity and inspiration. Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery 11 West 8th Street Red Lodge, Montana
June 1- 30, 2015 !BAA is very excited to have been accepted into the Carbon County Art Guild Exhibit. This is a busy tourist season for Red Lodge so we should get lots of exposure. Each artist can exhibit two paintings. Each artist will receive 60% of any art sold. Ev Bergeron (208-0411) will be chairing this event if you have any questions. !Please email images of each artwork you wish to submit in jpg format to [email protected]. Please include title, medium and price of each work. !Please deliver your artwork to the Carbon County Arts Guild in Red Lodge on May 30, 2015. All paintings should be framed appropriately with wire (no sawtooth hooks) with your name, title, medium and price labeled on the back of your paintings. Labels can be obtained by printing them from the BAA website. If you need help getting your work to Red Lodge, please email [email protected]. !An artist’s reception will be held on June 6 at 3-5 PM. Carbon County Arts Guild will supply refreshments for us.

The BAA Gainan’s Fall Show will take place September 18-19, 2015 at Gainan’s. This is a wonderful show with plants everywhere to accent our paintings. Please bring your artwork to Gainan’s on Thursday, September 17, between 12 noon to 2 PM . There is a $10 entry fee for 2 framed originals and 1 matted and shrink-wrapped giclee. No commission will be charged for painting sales. Please place labels on the back of your artwork. If you have an easel for your artwork, please bring it and put your name on it. Please, please pick up all paintings at 4PM on Saturday, September 19. If you cannot pick up your artwork, please make arrangements for someone else to pick them up. !We are again asking BAA members to donate miniatures (8x10 or less) for the show as a contribution to the BAA Education Fund. Please have your miniatures display ready with your name, title and price on the back . Prices should be $25 or under. Volunteers are requested to teach 2-hour mini workshops: 10 AM to 12 noon or 1-3 PM. At this time we have watercolor, drawing, multi media and bookmaking workshops. Join fellow artists for plein air opportunities throughout Billings and surrounding areas throughout the month of May. These are unhosted events chosen for variety of views and opportunities scheduled for the morning hours for the best light. All events have parking, nearby restrooms, and access to fresh water, as well as prior permission from property owners or managers. Dress for the weather, bring drinks and snacks. May 15, 2015 - Friday, 8:00 AM Audubon Conservation Center & Norm's Island 7026 South Billings Boulevard, Billings From South Billings Boulevard, enter the Conservation Center property at their gate off the Norm's Island parking lot. Use visitor parking. Painters with handicap permit may park near the building. Set up wherever you like. Beside building are water and restrooms. Drive carefully in the area: a large number of fourth graders will also visit the Center at 9:00. !May 23, 2015 - Saturday, 8:00 AM Yellowstone COUNTY MUSEUM near the airport Let's try this great location again! Paint outdoors or inside the museum, which is admission-free. The covered back deck and lawns outside offer great views of the Yellowstone Valley, an old locomotive, and other Western equipment to draw and paint. Inside you can access water and restrooms. !May 29, 2015 - Friday, 8:00 AM SHARP Pictograph Caves, near Lockwood Painters must be present by 8:00 AM SHARP at the park's access gate on Coburn Road in Lockwood, as the gate will be locked after us. Site offers myriad landscape views, good parking, paved paths, restrooms, and access to water. Dress for the weather, and pack snacks and drinks. Blooms are fresh in the morning and shadows accentuate shady spots. Plenty of parking. There will still be plenty of green and color to enjoy and paint. !June 26, 2015 - Friday, 8:00 AM Heron pond behind the Windmill Restaurant 3429 TransTech Way, Billings Plenty of parking. Tyler Murphy’s Workshop !
!A special thank you to Tyler Murphy for his great oil painting demonstration on March 28th. !Tyler gave new meaning to using a wipe and erase board; he does his thumbnails sketches on it and works out his painting compositions. When painting Tyler thinks about his lights and darks, how can he stand out in a crowd and still be true to himself, how to put expression in his works and not afraid of trying new things. Don't spend your career doing the same thing, explore.

Zier Gallery - 120 S. Main in Bridger MT Dana Zier is holding an OPEN ADULT PAINTING CLASS. Mondays, 5:30 - 7:00pm. Bring your own materials, rags for clean up, and any painting or drawing you are working on - or would like to start - and need some advice. 1 hour of painting and help, and 1/2 hour of group encouragement! Cost - $10.00 You can drop in any Monday, there is no set time to sign up for, and we don't all work on the same project. If you are a beginner, bring objects or photos of what you would like to try! Call 406-298-0841 to sign up - or ask about materials. !Dana is going to have a plein air trip every Friday afternoon starting in June. Participants will leave at 1pm from the gallery. $30 for those who need rides, $20 for those who can drive. Zier Gallery will provide late lunch and drinks. Everyone brings their own materials.
Joliet Community Center, Joliet, MT Susan Wolfe has an opportunity for BAA members to display artwork at the Joliet Community Center where she is manager. !We have an art wall that is 8' x 14'. Any artwork must be hang-able, but not necessarily framed. (I don't have any way to display things that must sit on a shelf or table.) If artwork is especially fragile, please consider whether you want to display it. The art wall is in the lobby of the building and is largely 'unsupervised'. We have not had any damage or theft to date, but there is always a possibility. !The Community Center is a high traffic area - we have the public library, a health clinic, a physical therapy clinic, a Head Start classroom as well as a hall that is rented to the public. We have had artwork sell for 5 out of 6 of the last artists who had displays. !The Community Center asks for 30% of any sale, so price your work accordingly. If work is not for sale, please label it clearly. Any type of artwork is welcome as long as it isn't obscene, doesn't contain profanity or nudes. !If you're interested, call Susan Wolfe at 406-962-9027 (Wednesday-Friday between 9 am and 3 pm) to arrange a month for your display. I can provide nails, hangars, etc. and I am willing to help you hang your artwork, if you like.

Note from Bonnie Eldredge: An oil painter who is confined to a smaller space to paint now is selling some larger frames which are really nice large frames: 4- 30 x 40" and 3- 24 x 36" frames that are quite nice. Angel Horses is a local non-profit organization that uses rescued horses and donkeys in a therapeutic environment serving special needs children. Angel Horses annual 'Boot Scootin' Barn Dance' fundraiser (dinner, dance and auctions) is scheduled for Saturday September 5th at White Aspen Ranch, 6-11 pm. An exciting addition to the live auction this year, 4 local artists will be painting life-size, fiberglass Arabian horses to display downtown over the summer. The horses will be auctioned the night of the fundraiser with proceeds going towards the purchase of land or a facility so the program can operate year round and serve more people in need! !Anyone interested in donating art to the auction or needing any other information may contact Roz Cottrill at 406-861-3219 or [email protected]
