VINT

AGE IN BIRMINGHAM

Charlotte Morrey - Textiles student

I chose to interview a fashion student who studies textiles. This particular students style portrays a vin-tage fashion with a modern twist.

What made you choose the subject textiles?I have always been passionate about tex-tiles from a young age, where I used to cut up my old clothes to customise them and make them more per-sonal. For example I cut the sleeves of an old top and sewed long denim sleeves on in replacement, I also then used the rest of the denim jacket to wear as a waistcoat. I am forever cutting and sewing, and wanted to apply and continue my talent within a degree course.

What subject are you studying in textiles at the moment? We have just been asked to specialise in a subject route, I have chosen to do construc-tive textiles which consists of weaving, knitting and embroi-dery. This allows me to play and experiment with different mate-rials and techniques. Embroidery has been very interesting, for practice I took in-spiration from William Morris’s spectacular old wallpaper designs and embroidered the shapes onto some of my

Where do you enjoy shop-ping in Birmingham? One of my favourite shops is the ‘Cow Vin-tage’ situated in Dig-beth, and also ‘Urban village’ which is inside the custard factory. Both of these have afford-able prices, especially because I am now a stu-dent. I could spend hours in these stores, finding unbelievable bargains and amazing vintage clothing.

Urban VillageAfter interviewing Char-lotte I decided to visit the Urban Village store myself, when I entered the store it felt like I was stepping into the 60’s with the Beatles playing out loud. They sold a massive range of women and men’s cloth-ing from the 1940’s up to the 1980’s. There were rails and rails of cloth-ing, knitwear, fur coats, tea party dresses and jeans and everything was a reasonable price. They also sold artwork most of which was pop art

inspired, along with old records from bands mostly within the 1960’s. Jewellery was kept in cases and cab-inets containing orig-inal vintage rings, brooches, charms, lockets, pendants, bracelets and neck-laces, The people that work there stated that they have a ‘vintage lifestyle’, they were dressed head to toe in vintage clothing, one shop assistant even had a vintage car. They all claimed to be eco friendly as well. What I found interesting is that on the wall was a poster stating ‘Vintage is a way to express your-self and to be differ-ent to the high street shops’. The longer I was in the shop the more I could under-stand and began to believe this.

Gok Wan Clothes Roadshow

Gok Wan took the Clothes Roadshow to Birmingham on September the 21st, where he held a catwalk show staging his Super Chic vs. High Street Fashion event showcasing the best in Autumn fash-ion. The ‘Super chic’ outfits averaged out at around £200 each, whilst the ‘High street fash-ion’ outfits were around £50 each. I was lucky enough to attend this catwalk show with front row seats, this was an amazing experience and also changed my percep-tion on fashion itself. At the beginning of the show we were told that at the end of the cat-walk we would have to vote for our favourite collection not know-ing which one was ‘Super Chic’ or ‘High street fashion’. Surprisingly the ‘High street fash-ion’ won the majority of the votes, this was amazing as it proves that you can still look sophisticated and chic at reasonable prices! Three Women from Bir-mingham also undertook major makeovers during the week leading up to the catwalk event,

RUSTIC THEME, THAT’S THE TREND.

This season is filled with warmth of sun and sand. We went many miles to get an inspiration from the heart of Africa: reds, yellows, oranges and browns like the sand in Sahara desert.Ethnic jewellery, wil add some edginess and make your neck look amazing. To add an interesting look to it, wrap yourself up with a fur scarf and carry a small bag that looks like a tiny, cute animal, you might want to play with all the time. This season is about a tribute to our home-Earth. This is an anti-fur camaign, because we want you all to remember about the fragile environment we live in.Let’s be less selfish this year and save many lives.Simple and you don’t loose anything. We can still look gorgeous wearing fake fur. Plus it saves us some cash for a new pair of jeans.

TOP

TIPS

OUR FAVOURITE PRODUCTSRimmel London - brown eye liner pencil. This is because it’s quick and easy to apply and brings out your eyes. It’s not as harsh as black so looks good against pale skin and goes well with nude make up colours. It can be worn as a casual daytime make up look or can be worn in the evening for more glamour-ous but natural evening looks. It’s good to keep on you as an all rounder. - Charlie

Fake Bake - beyond bronze mooseI personally like to have a tan all year round, I have tried many prod-ucts but Fake Bake been the most beyond bronze moose has defiantly reliable. This tanning moose gives a long lasting natural looking tan. It dries within seconds and with one coat develops into a natural colour within just a few hours. I always apply an extra layer in the Summer months for my tan to appear darker. Using a tanning mitt the moose ap-plies easily and smoothly to the skin with no streaks. One of the greatest things about this product is that it doesn’t have a distinct tanning product smell, it has a light sweet fragrance. False tanning is the best way of achieving a golden tan as it is safe and a reasonable price. Fake Bake beyond bronze moose comes in at £20.40 in high street stores such a Superdrug or Boots, it could be found cheaper online. - Autumn

L’oreal - Hair Repair SprayI couldn’t just pick my one favourite cosmetic. Theres too many things I10 need these days but I deffinately couldnt live without my hair repair spray. I like to keep my hair healthy, soft and shiny so i spray this product everytime after I wash my hair. The conditioning gives it a nice soft feeling and it also helps me to comb my hair. I recomend it for girls with long hair. Another product I use everyday is Vo5 hairspray. It holds for a very long time and smells appealing. Also it’s not expensive, only £3.09 at boots, definately worth trying. - Alex

UNDERGROUND SOUND

StreetArt.The Facts:The art of graffiti is popular among youths today and is closely linked to the underground music scene. There is a fine line between what is classed as Street ‘artwork’ and what is classed as vandalism. Digbeth is known for its large amounts of graffiti and street art which helps it attract the right sort of people to suit its music scene. Street art is illegal but there is an ongoing debate as to whether it is art or crime, as some say that it can improve the look

of an area.

The law:The law states that anyone caught doing graffiti on public property can be arrested and prosecuted under the Criminal Damage Act 1971. You can be fined up to £5,000 for the damage or you may be given a community service order. Under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003 you can be given on-the-spot fines of £50 and given 28 days to clean

up the damage.

Digbeth.Digbeth became known for its electronic music scene when Hmv institute opened and Godskitchen began doing weekly nights there. Godskitchen is an international superclub brand that associates mainly with electronic dance music. Godskitchen now have there own nightclub in Birmingham called AIR, which is also situated in Digbeth. There is also a event venue at ‘The Custard Factory’ and a venue called ‘The Rainbow Warehouse that are worth paying a visit. All of these are 5 minute walk from each other and

One second you’re sitting at home, mum’s done your washing and dinner’s on the table. Next thing you know, you’ve moved out and are living in student accommodation with a bunch of people all in the same situation as you. Fresher’s is over, you still haven’t finished unpacking, your room is an absolute state and you’re not feeling too sharp. It’s starting to set in that you’ve left and actually, without wanting to admit it, you’re feeling a bit homesick. Here’s a short guide on how to decorate your room to make you feel your best whilst you’re

at university..

1) Wall spaceTry to fill up a decent amount of wall space. No one likes boring white walls. Most rooms come with a board for you to pin stuff up on. Fill this board with lots of photos and memories from home to remind you of the laughs you’ve had all summer. Also pin up some flyers of events you want to go to whilst you’re there to give you something to

look forward to.

THE STUDENT WAY

34

Page 35: IMAGE MAGAZINE

2) Favourite ObjectsPlace you’re favourite things that you own in the most obvious places so that they are things you see most often. Whether it be your speakers or laptop or whatever, put it where you can see it from anywhere in the room. If you had it sitting in a certain set up at home, try setting it up in the same way here so it looks like you’ve just picked up your bedroom and dropped it into your halls.

3) ScentIf you have a favourite perfume or spray, try spraying in onto your cushions or curtains to make your room smell nice all

the time.

4) Own a plantKeep a plant on your window sill. This will give you something to look after and make it feel more homely if your family had

plants out at home.

5) Treat yourselfHave a look in Argos or IKEA for something you’d like to add to your room. Whether it be a jewellery box or laundry basket, it’ll add a bit of character to

your room.
