A t this time of year, we usual-ly expect to see green land-scapes, neighbors planting

flowers to brighten up their yards and rain puddles thatbarely seem to dry out beforethe next rain comes. However,

this year, it seems that all we seeare dry fields, water restrictionsand a drought that has createda thin layer of dust to hang overour state.

Were all looking for ways toconserve water, and if you livedthrough the California droughtof the late 70s, you may

    remember some tips from thattime.

Below are 15 water-saving suggestions that, if everyone would observe, will help us getthrough this difficult time witha lot more ease. Hopefully thesenew lifestyle changes for today will become your habits of

tomorrow. These tips are fromthe EPA, Redwood City Public Works, Ace Plumbing andsagethrive.com.

    1. Water conservation is some-thing that requires the assistanceof everyone in the family. To getkids into the act of water con-

servation, assign a week foreach of your children to policethe rest of the family. It willteach the kids about the impor-tance of water conservationand allow them to be the bossof mom and dad once in a while(even if for a brief time eachday).

The drought in California is so severe that Folsom Lake is at record low levels. Due to the lack of water in the reservoir, some neighboring communities havelimited water use for its residents.

    2. When you begin yournormal morning or nightroutines, think about theorder in which you do yourroutines. We all know thatit takes a while for the

water to warm up so usethe hot water side of yourfaucet to wet your tooth-brush, and as needed, turnthe water back on to rinse.By the time you wash your

face, the water will be warmer and youll haveavoided wasting water by letting it run to reach thedesired temperature.

Lincoln residents were excited to see a storm bring in lots of rain for aboutthree days in early February. However, this one storm was not enough to alle-viate the drought and we must all do our part to help conserve.

    3. Make sure yourfaucets dont drip. If youdo, the washers may need

to be replaced. A faucetthat drips at one drop persecond can use as muchas 2,700 gallons of water a year. Thats almost 7.5 gal-lons a day!

    4. Stop the toilet that isleaking. In addition to itbeing annoying, it always wastes a lot of water.Often times, repairing itcan be done with a few supplies purchased fromthe local home-improve-ment store.

    5. Don't spend so muchtime in the shower. A shower that lasts less thanfive minutes will use less water than filling the tub. Additionally, whether its washing and condition-ing your hair or shaving, turn off the water during that time. Youll beamazed how much water you can save.

    6. Speaking of showers,if you dont have a low-flow showerhead

installed, then that shouldbe at the top of your hon-ey-do list. You can save

up to 60 percent of yourshower water usage by installing a low-flow head.

    7. Create a water barrelfor when the rain doesfinally arrive. By collect-

ing rain water from youreaves, you can use the water for your dry and

    thirsty landscape.8. Weve all walked

down the street and seenhow some of our neigh-bors like to water theirsidewalks. The next time your sprinklers come on,take a couple of minutesto double check all theheads and make surethat only your landscap-ing is enjoying a refresh-ing drink of water.

    9. By running your dish-washer only when its atcapacity, you can save upto 400 gallons a month!

    10. Bathe your petsoutdoors in an area thatneeds water.

    11. When it comes timeto clean the fish tank, usethe nutrient-rich waterfor your non-edibleplants.

    12. At home or in ahotel room, use yourtowels for a few days. Youll save water, and if youre at home, yourtowels will last longer.

    13. When giving yourpet fresh water, dont dis-card the dirty water. Useit to water your plants.

    14. Never throw wateraway. If you have toomuch water in your glassor ice that will not berefreshed with addition-al water, use it to put water in your pets d ishor water one of yourplants.

    15. If you dont have awater dispenser in yourrefrigerator door, thenkeep a pitcher of water inthe fridge. Youll avoidrunning the water until itgets cold enough. It

always seems that were waiting for the water toeither cool down or warm up, doesnt it?

Whether its these sug-gestions that you can useon a daily basis or doing something as drastic as

removing your lawn andinstalling a drought-tol-erant landscape, waterconservation is a top pri-

ority for most residents. And, with the escalat-

ing costs of water in ourtown, youre not only

conserving water butconserving a little bit of your hard-earned mon-ey.

W hat would a St.Patricks Day mealbe without a littleIrish soda bread? Thereare various recipes forthis bread but this par-ticular recipe caught my

eye because of its sim-plicity. It doesnt need abread maker, andbecause theres no yeast,it doesnt need to rise. Its a very dense breadand absolutely deliciousright out of the oven with some butter andmarmalade.

IRISH SODA BREADIngredients:2 cups flour1 cup plus 1 tablespoon quick cooking oats1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda

2 teaspoons baking powder1/2 teaspoon salt1/2 cup raisins1 cup plus 1 tablespoon buttermilk1 large egg, lightly beaten2 tablespoons honey1 tablespoon butter, melted1/4 cup brandy

Directions:Combine raisins and brandy in a small

bowl. Let stand at room temperature for 30minutes.

Preheat the oven to 375F. Lightly grease a

baking sheet. In a medium bowl, mix theflour, 1 cup oats, baking powder, the bakingsoda, and salt. In a small bowl, whisk 1 cupbuttermilk, honey, egg, and butter until wellblended. Add to the dry ingredients, stirringuntil just combined. Stir in the raisins.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly flouredwork surface. Knead 5 to 6 times, then shapeit into a ball. Place on the prepared bakingsheet and pat down into an 8" round. Brush

the top with the remaining buttermilk andthen sprinkle with the remaining oats (ifdesired).

Bake until the loaf is golden brown andsounds hollow when tapped (35 to 40 min-utes). Transfer the loaf to a wire rack to cool.

Soda bread became a traditional item in the poor country of Ireland. Its made withthe most basic of ingredients, which results in a dense bread with a hard crust.

There are variousrecipes for thisbread but this

    particular recipe

    caught my eyebecause of itssimplicity.

Unlike the T.V. show, they dont buyold cars or cannons or other large items.A good rule of thumb is if it unique andwill fit in a shoe box, we are interested inlooking at it states Jim DAmbrosio, owner. Many folks like my wife andmyself have spent a lifetime collectingbeautiful things that mean a lot to us,but our children could care less about.

Our best advice is to consider sellingthese treasures now while you can still

D iabetes, cancer, heart disease andautism are just some of the many worthy causes that receive extraawareness through a special day ormonth designation.

By having a month or day set aside fora particular cause, we find out moreabout an illness or condition that affects

millions of people. As meaningful as these causes are, lighter subjects have their own celebra-tion days and I think youll find a lot of humor in them.

Ill bet you didnt know about Nation-al Middle Name Pride Day. Yup, thats areal day. In fact, if you want to celebrateit, the day is March 10.

How many of you remember the

episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show, where Richie learns that his middlename is ROSEBUD? Laura and Rob wanted to make everyone in their family happy, so instead of saddling their child with seven middle names, they came up with the acronym, R(obert), O(scar),S(am), E(dward), B(enjamin), U(lysses),D(avid).

I asked a group of my high school

friends about the most unusual middlename they ever heard. Dizzert, Lamb,Ivan, Burgan, Newyorkina and C (no ini-tial, they couldnt decide on a name sothey gave their son a letter) were among my friends and their family membersmiddle names.

And to think I disliked my middlename most of my life! However, being named after my paternal great-grand-

mother now means a lot to me.If you didnt think middle

names should have a specialday, then Im sure youll think that its silly that potato chipshave their own day.

Well, since they are AmericasNo. 1 snack food, maybe they deserve a day of observance.

Did you know that the chip was invented by a chef on Aug.24, 1853?

Hmmm, someone shouldexplain to us why Potato ChipDay is in March instead of August.

No one knows who inventedthis special day but it may havebeen cooked up by the snack

food industry. If youre waiting for a day when all the planets will alignand everything will go your way, then get up at the crack of dawnon March 16 for Everything You Do Is Right Day.

Life is full of ups and downs, and sometimes we feel that if we didnt have bad luck, we

wouldnt have any luck at all. However, dont you just love

those days when everything goes your way?

Yes, the way we look at life isall about perspective so look on

the bright side and maybe youllhave more Everything You DoIs Right days.

It has been a while since EThas visited but, maybe onMarch 20, ET and some of his

friends may land in Lincoln forExtraterrestrial AbductionsDay. However, if we cant getrain to come out of the sky, Idoubt that you have to worry about being abducted from any outer-space visitors.

If, by the end of March, youreexhausted from finishing yourtax returns or you just want anexcuse to enjoy a little sunshine, then enjoy Take A Walk In ThePark Day on March 30 (as long as you havent been abductedby aliens on March 20).

Go for a walk in the park andenjoy the peacefulness, anopportunity to clear yourmind and a chance to

look at the beauty of nature. If youre really lucky, youll have totake an umbrella with you to enjoy somemuch-needed rain.

Silliness is good forthe soul and putsa smile on your face.

Although some of these daysare nonsensical, its fun to take alight-hearted view every once ina while and just have fun.

Oh, and in case you were wondering what my middlename is ... well, come find meon March 10 and I just mighttell you.

    DEBBIE BROWN INSIDE LINCOLN

March 20 is Extraterrestrials Abduction Day. Make sure you

have your GPS on you that day. You never know when youmay be taken to visit another planet and youre going towant to find your way home.

Potato Chip Day might justbe the excuse youve beenlooking for to pig out onAmericas No. 1 snack food.

    Those little bundles of

    joy arrive. and then what?

Owners can begin train-ing as soon as the puppy arrives!

Success is achievedthrough gentle and posi-tive reinforcement and useof lure training (use of small pieces of appropri-ate food or a favored toy).

Training sessions shouldbe brief in the beginning,

as puppies have shortattention spans.Daily 10- to 15-minutes

sessions are enough forpuppies about eight- to 10- weeks of age.

Basically, the lure isshown to the puppy; thecommand is given; the lureis moved to get the desiredresponse; the puppy isrewarded with the lure.

Lets see how this works with some basic tricks.

    1.) Come.Start by backing away

from the puppy a shortdistance (1 to 2 feet) with atreat/lure in hand. Whileshowing the treat, say yourpuppys name and the

command, Come. Whengiving the command, always use a pleasantvoice. When the puppy comes, give the treat andpraise the puppy. Do thismultiple times daily andnot only when getting ready to crate the pet. Callthe puppy to you, rewardand praise her. Thenrelease her. Over thecourse of several weeks, the distance between youand the puppy shouldincrease. Do this in a safe

    environment.Eventually, you can add

distractions. If at any point you are worried about herrunning away, practice with the puppy wearing along leash so that you cangently pull on the leash toreinforce the command.

    2.) Sit.Hold a favorite treat over

the puppys nose andmove it slowly back, overthe head. Normally, the

puppy will sit as it followsthe treat but you can gen-tly press the rump as well. As the puppy sits, say sitout loud. Praise the puppy immediately with a goodsit and give her the treat.

Repeat this regularly andshe will begin to associatethe treat with the com-mand and action desired.Once accomplishing asimple sit, a hand motioncan be added to the mix sothat the puppy begins toassociate the hand motion

with the command.3.) Down. When the puppy learns

to sit, start working onlearning this commandfrom that position. Using atreat, lower it between thefront paws and add thecommand down. A novel way of teaching the downcommand is to offer it while you are sitting on thefloor with bent legs. Havethe treat under your knee

and the puppy will have tolie down to reach it. Alwayspraise and treat with eachsuccessful attempt.

Additional puppy train-ing instructions can befound in Behavior Advicefor Clients (Landsberg and Horwitz, 2012).

sonalize your home. A poten-tial buyer should comethrough and picture their fam-ily living in your home. It issometimes hard for buyers toimagine how the home wouldbe for them if they see all yourfamily photos and personalbelongings. This is a good timeto carefully pack up all yourprecious memories.

In your preparation to sell, its a great opportunity to fix allthose minor repairs. Fix a leaky faucet if you have doors or windows that dont close prop-erly, replace burnt-out lightbulbs, replace furnace filters, repair holes and cracks in the

walls and replace torn screens.Consider painting overbright colors to a more neutraltone.

Getting these repairs han-dled ahead of time makes for asmoother transaction.

Give your home that cleansparkle. What I hear more andmore from buyers is that they notice and point out when ahouse feels really clean.

Take this time to clean win-dows and screens, clean thebaseboards, clean those dust-collecting ceiling fans, makesure bathroom mirrors are

spot-free and bleach any dingy grout.

Shine up your wood or lam-inate flooring and you may also consider professionally cleaning or replacing old, worncarpeting.

A little money spent couldhave huge influence on how quickly your home will sell.

Finally, you want to jazz upthat curb appeal. You only getone chance to make a firstimpression. Buyers usually make an instant decision intheir mind when they see thefront of a home as to whetherthey will like it.

So green up that grass, plant

some new bright flowers andclean off those walkways anddriveways. Make your homefeel like Home Sweet Home!

If you are interested in thecurrent market value of yourhome or if you would like an inhome consultation to see what you might need to do to spruceup your home for a future sale,I offer both of these services forfree.
