Twice Grammy nominated Swedish DJ / Producer Avicii is to release an extraordinary ‘True’ remix album on March 24th, following the remarkable and unprecedented success the album enjoyed upon it’s release last September.

Boasting the fastest selling single of 2013 in ‘Wake Me Up!’, which also charted at number 1 in a mammoth 84 territories, as well as top 10 follow singles ‘You Make Me’ and ‘Hey Brother’, ‘True’ confirmed Avicii’s status as one of dance music’s truly global stars. Fusing charging dance rhythms with folk-esque riffs and vocals, a facet of

his music that has rapidly become his hallmark, as well as displaying a stunning adeptness for melody, his is a sound that has galvanized charts across the world. Now, fresh for

2014, Avicii is set to offer up an entirely re-contextualized ver-sion of ‘True’ that delivers the album in a new, uniquely exciting

light. Approached from an ‘Avicii by Avicii’ standpoint, each rework sees him toy with original tracks in an innovative format that showcases not only craftsmanship but a remarkable willingness to

experiment and explore.

‘Avicii by Avicii’ is a conceptual masterstroke. Fresh and exciting, it manages to retain the

personality of ‘True’, whilst simultaneously extending the appeal of what made ‘True’

such a groundbreaking debut album.

The success of ADE and the health

of the electronic music sector are inextricably linked

The nineteenth edition of the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) will take place from the 15th to 19th of October, 2014. Over the last three years the world’s leading event for electronic music has almost doubled in size, and ADE’s organizers are confident of maintaining above average year on year growth rates for the foreseeable future. At the 2014 edition, the organization expects 350,000 visitors from around the world.

The record breaking 2013 edition of the ADE focused on the 25th anniversary of dance music in the Nether-lands, which was marked by a number of special events including the launch of the book Mary Go Wild, an

outdoor exhibition, talk shows, special music events and several film screenings. The an-niversary celebrations resulted in a wave of national and international media attention and emphasized the leading role that the Netherlands plays in the global dance music industry. In total 2,156 artists from around the world performed in 80 different venues at ADE 2013.

Ultra Music Festival (UMF) is an annual outdoor elec-tronic music festival that occurs in March in the city of Miami, Florida, United States. The festival coincides with the annual Winter Music Conference, also held in Miami.

Since expansion to 2 weekends in 2013, however, the two Ultra weekends are held on the weekends that begin and end WMC.

Ultra is held in Downtown Miami in Bayfront Park. It was a one-day festival from 1999 to 2006, a two-day festival from 2007 to 2010, and was a three-day festival in 2011 to 2012. In 2012, a record 55,000 people per day attended the festival.

In 2013, for the first time in festival history, UMF took place across two consecutive weekends. In 2014, the festival will return to a one-weekend format, taking place on Friday, March 28 through Sunday March 30th. Presale Tickets went on sale online May 21, 2013 selling out in a matter of seconds.

Other Ultra festivals are held in Ibiza, Spain; Buenos Aires, Argentina; São Paulo, Brazil; Santiago, Chile; Seoul, South Korea; Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa, Split, Croatia and Hvar, Croatia.

In December, 2013 Ultra Worldwide announced to first edition of the festival in Bogotá, Colombia to be held on February 20 & 21 2014.

Although they share names, UMF was not directly tied to Ultra Records, an electronic music record label. However, the two entities did announce a ”global alliance” in August 2012, which would allow them to collaborate on marketing and cross-promotion.

Ultra Music Festival was founded in 1999 by business partners Rus-sell Faibisch and Alex Omes and Bruce Braxton. The first festival was held as a one-day event at the end of the Winter Music Conference in 1999 with performances by Rabbit in the Moon and DJ Baby Anne. The event was held on South Beach in Miami Beach, Florida, and was a major success. In March 2000, the festival returned to South Beach as a one-day event; the festival was met with even more success and was renewed immediately for a third year. The 15th anniversary of Ultra Music Festival held in 2013 was held over two weekends for the first time ever (Friday through Sunday.)

HISTORY

Growth to Downtown MiamiBecause of the massive rise in attendance between 1999 and 2000, festival coordinators decided to relocate to Bayfront Park in Downtown Miami for the third annual event. UMF continued to bring the biggest names in electronic dance music to Miami with performances by Tiësto, EC Twins, Paul van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold, Sander Kleinenberg, Photek, Josh Wink, p.a.w.n. LASERS, DJ Craze, and Rabbit in the Moon from 2001 to 2005. With the record-breaking attendance of the seventh annual UMF in 2005, the festival was again relocated to a smaller (by area) venue, Bicentennial Park, for 2006. In 2007, with Winter Music Conference in full swing, Ultra Music Festival held its first two-day event at Bicentennial Park with a record breaking 50,000+ concert goers in attendance. Ultra Music Festival celebrated its 10th anniversary March 28–29, 2008 with performan-ces by Tiësto, Underworld, Justice, Paul van Dyk, Carl Cox, Armin van Buuren, MSTRKRFT, deadmau5, Annie Mac, Eric Prydz, Ferry Corsten, Calvin Harris, Moby, The Crystal Method, Boys Noize, Benny Benassi, Armand van Helden, Duck Sauce, David Guetta, Jes, Enur, Pete Tong, Jackal & Hyde, Dj MYREN from Iran(2014) and Rabbit in the Moon.

With estimated attendance over 70,000, the festival set a new City of Miami record for number of tickets sold at a single event. The 11th annual UMF occurred March 27–28, 2009; the lineup including more crossover acts and live bands like The Black Eyed Peas, The Prodigy, The Ting Tings, Santigold, Crystal Castles, The Whip, and Perry Farrell. The 12th annual UMF took place March 26–27, 2010, with headlining performances again by Tiësto and deadmau5, as well as performances by David Guetta, Orbital, Little Boots, Sasha & Digweed, Abo-ve & Beyond, and The Bloody Beetroots. Each stage was accompanied with visual arts provided by VJs Vello Virkhaus, Psyberpixie, and Cozer. The festival sold out for the first time with over 100,000 attendees, where it was announced that the 13th annual event would take place over the course of three days in March 2011.

2012Ultra Music Festival 2012 was held on March 23, 24, 25 at Bayfront Park.Early bird pre-sale tickets for Ultra Music Festival 2012 sold out within 20 minutes (seconds according to the Ultra Music Festival Facebook Page). Shortly after, pre-sale tickets increased from $149 to $229. This is also the second year that tickets for individual days did not become available for sale. A special appearance by Madonna the day after the international release of her twelfth studio album MDNA was held at the second day of the festival. Thereafter tickets for the 14th anniversary of the Festival quickly rose from $229 to $299 just one week after going on sale. In January, tickets for three-day general admission sold out.

2013The 15th Ultra Music Festival was held over weekends; March 15 to 17, and March 22 to 24. Both of these weekends coincided with the beginning and end of Miami Music Week and the Winter Music Conference. Phase one of the festival lineup was officially revealed in January 2013, confirming appearances by David Guetta, deadmau5, and Tiësto on both weekends, along with Swedish House Mafia, who used the finale of the festival on Weekend 2 to serve as the finale of their farewell tour ”One Last Tour”.[4] Main stage performances from Porter Robinson, Madeon, Hardwell, and more, were live-streamed over the internet via UMFTV.

Pretty Lights would also perform at the festival accompanied by bass-beat DJ Futtize for the latter’s Birthday (b. March 26).

On January 7, 2013, after organizers requested additional road closures for the event, Miami Commissioner Marc Sarnoff introduced a resolution calling for disapproval of the second weekend, believing that allowing the event to be held across two weekends would be ”disruptive to the local business community and area residents due to noise, nuisance behavior of festival goers, and grid lock traffic,” also alleging that ”about 70 to 80 percent of these kids are on some sort of mind-altering drug.”

The city council voted in favor of continuing with the second weekend on January 10, 2013, charging the organizers $500,000 for police and fire services.

The first edition of Ultra South Africa officially became the biggest electronic music festival to ever take place on the African continent, following two unforgettable and historic sold out days in the breathtaking cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg, on the 14th and 15th of February respectively.

Welcoming over 40,000 music-hungry fe-stivalgoers across two colossal sold out days (more than 15,000 at Ostrich Farm, Cape Town, and 25,000 at the Nasrec Showgrounds in Johannesburg), tens of thousands of dance music fans from across South Africa and beyond got their first taste of the inimitable ‘Ultra experience’, as they bore witness to some of the world’s best DJs, performing in some of the world’s most beautiful settings, powered by some of the world’s biggest and most advanced production, in what was one of the most peaceful and successful events in Ultra Worldwide’s 16-year history.

ULTRA SOUTH AFRICA BECOMES BIGGEST

ELECTRONIC FESTIVAL IN AFRICA'S HISTORY

“We are extremely proud of the first Ultra South Africa. The response from fans has been absolutely incredible, it truly has been a dream come true and we can ensure you that the future of Ultra in South Africa is going to only get bigger and better! We would also like to take this chance to thank our incredible teams, DJs, sponsors (Heineken, DSTV, Red Bull) and of course all the awesome fans out there! Get ready for 2015!”

Shaun Duvet

“It’s taken years of research and hard work to get to where we are now in South Africa, and we have found the perfect local partner. I am absolutely thrilled that we will be here for the next five years at least, and I am so excited to see what the future holds for dance music in South Africa.”

Russell Faibisch

“I couldn’t be happier about our first outing in South Africa. The festival went off without a hitch and the reception from our fans in each city was truly unbelievable. South Africa is such an incredible nation and I’m positive we will be putting on groundbreaking events here for years to come. This is just the beginning.”

INTERVIEW DJNEWSMAGAZINE

During the Ibiza season, you are frequently asked about what you are bringing to the island that it didn’t have before. After having a little time to reflect, what do you think ’Wisdom of the Glove’ brought to Pacha & Ibiza & will it return this summer?

For me, Wisdom of the Glove is a breath of fresh air to the clubbing scene in Ibiza. It brought art and a sense of humor into the game. Most brands take themselves so seriously. I tried to create an experience. I wanted people to go through a mysterious journey, but in the end, still be at a party. I’m not the only one doing this in Ibiza, but I felt that Wisdom of the Glove was one of the main parties that created this concept. Despite the love we received, Pacha and I had some different opinions about how Wednesdays should go this year. Regardless, I wish them all the best. I am close to the Pacha family and it remains my favorite club in Ibiza. Wisdom of the Glove will take a new monthly home, on Fridays at Pacha. I’ll also be doing some day parties at Destino. So yes, Wisdom will live on but rumors sayI have a new party in the works...

When Pacha approached you, you responded by saying you wanted a full residency & full control of the programming. What were the biggest challenges in taking on the role of bookings and programming, compared to being a DJ and playing at other promoters events?

There’s a huge difference between just showing up to play and controlling all of the programming for a party. With programming, I had to enter the political game of Ibiza but I like the challenge. Every week the goal was to keep people excited with both music and decor. We tried to make different and innovative ideas each week. Its a constant fight for what you believe in vs. the interest of the club. Sometimes you agree, some-times you disagree, its all part of the process. I enjoy doing this. Its why I have a new concept...

When walking into Pacha on a Wednesday, the ’Glove’ was one of the first things you saw. Where is the glove now?

The Glove is being held in a secret location somewhere in the Swiss Alps. Secured by 77 virgins, 12 mermaids and 1 elf.

Moving more into the present, you are working on a number of different projects. Let’s start with your new label ’Rumors’,  after the success of ’Supplement Fact’s’, why have you decided to start something new & what can we expect from the label in the future?

Guy Gerber

DJNEWSMAGAZINE INTERVIEW

DJ NEWS MAGAZINE19

Since last year I realized the power of a name and a concept. I have at least 8 new concepts in my pocket at all times. Just to entertain myself or see how the public will react. Rumors will not only be a label, but also a party series. The idea for Rumors came about from a What’s App group dedicated to discussing all the rumors going around Ibiza.  There has always been loads of rumors about me and I’ve always been a big fan of rumors. I want everyone to join forces and create more rumors. The thing about rumors is, it takes a minute to start one and a lifetime to stop.

The first release is a collaboration between Dixon & yourself named ’No Distance’ with a remix from Lake People. How did this collaboration come about & what did each of you bring to the release?

I started this track in New York and it was very emotional time while a very good friend of mine was dealing with a loss. This affected me very much. I was writing this melody, in a way, for him. It reflected the pain but was looking positively into the future. I played with this melody for quite awhile. Then rumors says, I was meeting Dixon in the forest of Oblivion on a road trip to Texas and I suggested that he join in on this track. He took a look at all the parts of track and organized them in a way that made it make sense. He didn’t change the melody, just one note of the bass. It was really touching. Its such a pleasure to work with a master like Dixon. We will be doing a follow up track in September.

You are working on a new album, with you also working with your band, can we expect a different approach compared to your 1st album and ’Who’s Stalking Who?’

Rumors say that I just completed my 3 year project with a really notorious person. This album was a long journey with many stops and starts. But now its almost complete. Besides that, I will be working on another album which will be very different from Who’s Stalking Who.

How will these projects and collaborations effect your live show?

This is something I have to explain. In 2013 I only played dj sets, I was doing it with Abelton, only playing other people’s tracks. Now I’m trying to change it up a bit by playing live shows once in awhile, I much prefer djing live.

After admitting you’re quite a big stalker, & releasing your ’Who’s Stalking Who’ album for free last year, who will you be stalking this summer this summer in Ibiza & why should people stalk you?

So I heard Pacha hired a new dancer from the North Pole and she hasn’t been to a warm climate in her entire life. So I already bought a telescope and I relocated my apartment so I can have a clear view of her development in Ibiza. But anyway, why should people be stalking me?I mean… Who else are you going to stalk?

around 100,000 people. The first Winter Music Conference took place at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott February 19-21, 1986 with approximately 80 dance music industry insiders in attendance. The event festivities are presented across Miami Beach and Downtown Miami.

A major event is the International Dance Music Awards. The event commands a major international draw with around 38% of attendees coming from outside the United States. The conference serves as a platform for many underground and indie artists from over 70 different countries who spend the conference at events and panels; it is also a medium used by several entrepreneurs and consumer electronic companies to present their businesses and technological developments.

The WMC & The Recording Academy began in 1996 - a partnership presenting The Producers Forum, a gathering of legendary artists. Waxpoetics Magazine, JBL, and Stanton sponsored the first International Record Collectors Show in 2007.The WMC 2009 introduced the first annual WMC VJ Challenge at The Miami Beach Resort & Spa with celebrity hosts, judges, and VJs from various parts of the world hosted by VJ Psyberpxie and Felix Sama. This inaugural year of the competition resulted in Sergey Lobodln (Moscow, Russia), walking away with the top winner prize. In 2010, the VJ Challenge was expanded into two areas of competition; Video Mixing and Audio/Visual Mixing. The 2010 VJ Challenge winners were AeonChild (Boulder, Colorado) in the video category and Eclectic Method (London/NYC) in the Audio/Visual category.

The Miami Beach Resort also received the performance of the RoboMusic Demo in which Funkstar De Luxe and RoboProfessor (Henrik Hautop Lund) create live interactive compositions of RoboMusic. Since 2008, the conference has received increasing competition from the International Music Summit taking place in Ibiza in May.

Christian Burns Simple Modern Answers (Deluxe Version)

Christian Burns performed his first public song at the tender age of 13, starting a trend that would ultimately lead him to a number one smash and a lifelong career amongst the crème-de-la-crème of the Electronic Dance Music scene. When ‘Simple Modern Answers’ landed last year, Link2Party noted that previously, “vocalists behind some of the most epic tracks to grace the dancefloor have been little more than a name on a record sleeve.” With his solo album, Christian Burns shook that perception permanently, becoming one of the few dance vocalists to receive center billing on a full length release.

KSHMR Megalodon

Ever since it appeared as an ID track in DJ sets and radio shows by the likes of Hardwell, Sander van Doorn, Nicky Romero, hype, rumors and speculations surround this track. Who produced it, what’s the title, where did it come from? After it was featured in the teaser video for this years Spinnin’ Sessions event in Miami, even more discussion followed. With the creator announced as KSHMR, a new moniker of a veteran artist rooted heavily in electronic pop & dance music, the mystery continues. But evidentily the track speaks for itself. Make way for ‘Megalodon’!

JES Unleash

The Beat

JES has released the stylish platinum mix of her Unleash The Beat series today on Magik Muzik. The first in four glittering continuous mixes to be released throughout 2014, Unleash The Beat - The Platinum Mix features hand-selected tracks that have become staples in JES' sets, including the Pedro Del Mar & DoubleV Remix of Tiesto ft JES - "Everything," Ferry Corsten ft. JES - "In Your Eyes" [Dirty Chips Remix Clubmix], Roger Shah JES & Brian Laruso - "Higher Than The Sun" (Aly & Fila Remix), and more.

"Making my previous Unleash The Beat comps has been such a blast but I wanted to raise the bar so I came up with the idea for quarterly mini mixes between the big annual, double album releases to keep the vibe alive for the fans," says JES.

After a successful 2013 packed with back-to-back singles, the release of her album Unleash The Beat Volume 2, and almost 70 episodes of her radio show on over 50 stations worldwide, JES has already taken 2014 up a notch by collaborating with ATB for three tracks on his latest album Contact, performing at the TEC Awards with BT at NAMM in January, and bringing her live DJ show to cities like Miami and Dallas.

"I've always heard music as colors and naming them after what inspired me seemed like the natural choice," she says. "When the mixes blend at exactly the right moment, it moves you into a new dimension. That feeling is like platinum to me. Take a listen and see where it takes you!"

FIRST STATE RELEASES 3RD ARTIST ALBUM 'FULL CIRCLE'

In a comparatively short time frame Holland’s Sander van der Waal released his debut album on In Trance We Trance, before changing lanes for the new creative aesthetic of its Magik Muzik follow-up. Now, in 2014, he completes that initial three-album arc with ‘Full Circle’. For this new long-player, the spectrum of Van der Waal’s compound sound becomes ever yet more expansive. Frequency hopping across genre bands - often inside the confines of a single track, it beguiles the audiophile by exploring the EDM route less travelled. The only predictable feature of ‘Full Circle’ is its entire lack of predictability!

On the release of his third album, Sander stated: “‘Full Circle’ represents my journey as an artist and song composer, as I feel this album stands for the completion of an era and my development as an artist. With this album I’ve followed my heart and some songs took days while others took weeks or sometimes even months. Even though an album is never finished for a producer until it leaves it’s studio, the same goes for a circle as it has no beginning nor and ending.” Artistically, ‘Full Circle’ drops its first compass point with the vocoderizing ministrations of ‘I Need Your Love’ - its analogue MOOG-isms bestowing a Mylo-esque driven groove and floor-sense to ‘Full Circle’s onset.

Further in, Sander reunites with the first of several ‘Changing Lanes’ vocal alumni. Paper Aeroplanes front-woman Sarah Howells brings first vocal anthemia to ‘Skies On Fire’, and further in laments the loss of a love supreme on the TKO of ‘Seeing Stars’. Her acoustics initially come accompanied by flecked gui-tar and pianoforte, before Sander roguishly diverts and subverts them, rolling the snares and space-shot synth lines in underneath.

Equally accomplished in its vocal-free regions, First State’s instrumentals bring ‘Full Circle’ further sonic grades and shades. An unexpectedly soulful spin to the EDM sound on ‘Lourdes’; old-skool M1 piano uplift on ‘World’s Apart’ and an astonishing sound collage of violins and tech-through-elec grind on ‘Anunnaki’ all interconnect its vocal numbers.

Drawing on sonic stylistic influences and inspirations from dance music and way, way beyond, ‘Full Circle’ brings a new track collection-come-expedition that through eclectic, amazing tangents and curves, grips the attention from primary beat to terminal point. It’s out March 3rd through Magik Muzik.
