DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

he MBA program at IIT Kanpur was initiated with the guiding principle that a sound technical expertise coupled with right management acumen, is the key to survival in a contemporary, competitive environment. In fact, the Tprogram is a testimony to one of the key strengths of IIT Kanpur, which is its articulate understanding of the

existing and future needs of the corporate world. This inherent dynamism is expressed through path-breaking innovations in both its programs and its research to keep abreast with the latest.

Globally accepted as a vibrant seat of academic and professional excellence, IIT Kanpur is known for its innovative approach, participative culture and academic rigor. Today, over eighteen thousand engineers, technologists, scientists, managers and entrepreneurs from IIT Kanpur are active across the globe. Though the MBA program offered by the IME department is only seven years old, it retains a strong interaction with the industry on account of its courses in Industrial Management. The strong industry linkages ultimately go a long way in providing a holistic approach to research and education.

The special efforts to recruit talented faculty on a global basis and stringent admission procedures to select brilliant students across the country, ensure a pool of formidable intellectual capital at any given time in the campus. This helps in a healthy and dynamic exchange of ideas which incubates leaders for the corporate world. No wonder that IIT is perhaps India's most recognized brand the world over.

t is indeed a great pleasure for me to introduce the seventh batch of students of the IITK MBA programme to the world of business and management. A broad view of the competencies of this batch of students is set out below.I

The modern business world is dynamic, nonlinear, and complex. Only professionals with the passion for facing challenges, courage for embracing novelty and competence to be creative can really excel in such a scenario. This requires that one thinks in a holistic manner, performs to be effective, and delivers to the delight of the multiple stakeholders. How does the MBA programme at IIT Kanpur prepare its students to be the professional the present day business world need to have? There are two levels at which one can address this question.

At the first level the design of the IITK MBA programme includes course structure, pedagogy, and flow that allows students to create learning spaces for themselves: Conventional courses provide the essential background material and direction for learning; Analysis and discussion of cases offers an opportunity to be as close to real life as possible, and appreciate the nonlinearities of the real world; Special study courses challenge the students to appreciate, comprehend and critically evaluate new areas of learning and probe deeper; Class projects create the environment for creating and making sense of knowledge, working through teams, and communicating effectively.

The second level is the ambience of IIT Kanpur in which the MBA programme is nested. Traditionally, IIT Kanpur imparts a culture of being on the frontiers of knowledge, offers an environment to develop an integrated personality, and provides an opportunity to develop highly professional skills.

Students joining the IITK MBA programme have an engineering background and go through the rigorous process of value addition. Here are the managers with an engineering background, professionally trained to be complete managers, sensitized to value humanity, and developed to deliver.

The MBA programme and IITK mission gel well with the demands of the business world. The enthusiastic and encouraging response from the industry in the past is a testimony to this. I am sure this partnership between the industry and IITK MBA will be further strengthened with the fresh batch of our graduates.
