    Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)

    IITs are a group of fifteenautonomous engineering and

    technology oriented institutes ofhigher education established anddeclared as Institutes of NationalImportance by the Parliament ofIndia.

    IITs were created to train scientistsand engineers, with the aim ofdeveloping a skilled workforce to

    support the economic and socialdevelopment of India afterindependence in 1947.

    History

    History of the IIT system dates backto 1946 when Sir Jogendra Singh of

    the Viceroys Executive Council setup a committee whose task was toconsider the creation of HigherTechnical Institutions for post-warindustrial development in India.

    The Sarkar committee recommendedestablishment of IITs in various partsof India, affiliated to secondary

    institutions with the aim of producingnot just undergraduates, butresearchers and academicians.

    These institutes were expected tomaintain high educational standards.

    1. As a step towards thisdirection, the first IIT wasestablished in 1951, inKharagpur (nearKolkata) in the state of West Bengal.

    3. IIT Madras is located in the city of

    Chennai in Tamil Nadu. It wasestablished in 1959 with technicalassistance from the Government ofWest Germany.

    4. IIT Kanpur was established in 1959in the city of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.During its first 10 years, IIT Kanpurbenefited from the Kanpur Indo-

    American Programme (KIAP),

    where a consortium of nine USuniversities. Under the program,faculty members from these

    Institutions assisted the Institute inthe setting up of the academicprograms and development oflaboratories.

    5. Established as the College of

    Engineering in 1961, located inHauz Khas was renamed as IITDelhi .

    6. IIT Guwahatiwas established in1994 near the cityof Guwahati

    (Assam) on thenorthen banks ofthe Brahmaputra

    River.

    7. IIT Roorkee, originally known as the

    University of Roorkee, wasestablished in 1847 as the firstengineering college of the BritishEmpire. Located in Uttarakhand, thecollege was renamed The ThomsonCollege of Civil Engineering in1854. It became first technical

    university of India in 1949 and wasrenamed University of Roorkeewhich was included in the IIT

    system in 2001.

    Admission to most of thepostgraduate courses in IITs isgranted through various written

    entrance examinations: GATE (forM.Tech.), JAM (for M.Sc.) and CEED(for M.Des.).

    The admission for the Ph.D. programis based primarily on a personal

    interview, though candidates mayalso have to appear for written tests.

    IITs receive large grants compared toother engineering colleges in India.The amount varies between Rs.900 1,300 million per year for eachIIT. Other sources of funds includestudent fees and research funding

    from governmental agencies and theprivate industry.

    The government has no direct controlover internal policy decisions of IITs(such as faculty recruitment) but hasrepresentation on the IIT Council .

    to maintain the highest standards.The senate comprises allprofessors of the Institute and

    Innovation and Incubation

    The Institute established SIDBI Innovation andIncubation Center (SIIC) to foster innovation, research,and entrepreneurial activities in technology-basedareas.SIIC provides a platform for start-ups by prospective
