Workshop on Energy Efficiency

& Engineering

IIT Madras Research Park, Chennai | 7th February 2015

Introduction

THE WORLD TODAY IS REELING UNDER VARIOUS ENERGY RELATED ISSUESPRIMARILY ATTRIBUTED TO OVER-EXPLOITATION OF DEPLETING RESOURCESAND INADEQUATE PLANNING AND DESIGN.

WE THE INDIAN INSTITUTE OF PUBLIC POLICY (IIPP) WITH SUPPORT FROM THEIEEE POWER & ENERGY SOCIETY (MADRAS CHAPTER) ARE FOCUSSED ON ENERGYEFFICIENCY ISSUES.

OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS, THE ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT DIVISION OF IIPPHAVE BEEN STUDYING THE NEED FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND OPTIMISATIONIN MOTORS IN THE SPINNING MILL CLUSTERS OF THE CITY OF COIMBATORE,INDIA. OFFICIAL AND RESEARCH STATISTICS REVEAL THAT ENERGY EFFICIENCYALONE COULD LEAD TO SEVERAL 1000S OF MWS OF POWER CONSERVATION INTHE STATE OF TAMIL NADU AND AT LARGE, EVEN INDIA. THIS CURBS THE NEEDTO GO FOR EXPENSIVE POWER GENERATION. WITH THE EXISTENCE OF SUCHIMMENSE POTENTIAL, THERE COMES THE NEED TO FILL THE SKILL GAP CREATEDFOR ENGINEERS WHO DESIGN AND BUILD SYSTEMS WHICH ARE RESPONSIBLE INTHEIR ENERGY CONSUMPTION, WHETHER ELECTRICAL OR THERMAL (AMONGOTHERS).

IN AN ATTEMPT TO SENSITISE YOUNG ENGINEERS ON THE PROBLEM OF ENERGYEFFICIENCY IMPLEMENTATION, NOT JUST IN ACADEMIC OR RESEARCH AREAS,BUT ALSO AS AN INDUSTRIAL, POLICY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN, THE 1STWORKSHOP ON ENERGY EFFICIENCY & ENGINEERING WAS CONDUCTED AT THEIIT MADRAS RESEARCH PARK ON THE 7TH FEBRUARY 2015. 60 YOUNG ENGINEERSFROM 12 INSTITUTIONS ACROSS THE STATE PARTICIPATED IN THE 8 HOUR LONGWORKSHOP THAT FEATURED 4 SPEAKERS.

THIS REPORT HIGHLIGHTS THE KEY LEARNINGS, PRESENTS THE FEEDBACKRECEIVED AND ALSO GIVES ATTENTION TO THE CONTINUOUS ENGAGEMENTMETHODS PLANNED FOR THE ATTENDEES.

Session IV - Energy Efficiency, Environment and You

Mr. Sundar Rajan, Environmentalist, Chennai

Sundar Rajan wears two hats. One as a mild mannered softwareprofessional and the other of an ardent nature lover. With an in depthinterest and knowledge on the interdependencies of energy andwater across several countries, Sundar speaks at various forums onthe need for a change in perspective among today's engineers whenthe question of balancing need with necessity arises. His notablework includes volunteering with the Poovulagin Nanbargal group, anon-profit clean energy advocacy organization, based out of TamilNadu. He was a core member of the delegation that participated inthe Fukushima Convention at Japan in 2014.

Technical Article Competition

Students were given the task of writing a technical articlebased on the day's talks and the best article contributionwas received from Mr. Kundan Singh (SRM University,Electrical Engineering). Mr. Kundan would receive anArduino Uno Microcontroller Board and a free pass to IITMadras Electrical Engineering Department's PowerSystems Lectures to be held in the month of March 2015.

Further Engagement

Students would be a part of a survey where theirhousehold energy consumption would be tracked to helpbuild a map of electricity consumption patterns with andwithout energy efficiency efforts. This would motivate students to practice energyconservation both at the household and institutionallevel.
