A recent segment on National Public Radio pronounced that the average Amerclan readers read less than one chapter of a book in 1991. Let's continue to distinguish ourselves as the people of the book. Find one book that can challenge you and expand your Jewish horizons. Explore In the Temple library or ask Elaine Herz (our Librarian) , your rabbis or educator for a suggestion. 2. Register to vote. America provides us with an environ- ment that has been rare in our history; one where each citizen has an equal say In the election of those who will govern . Let's continue to distinguish ourselves as we have in the past by pro- tecting and exercising that right. Register to vote this summer, at your own Village or Township Hall or at the Temple. President's Corner Shi-ur and D'var Torah: These are two concepts with which

most of us are unfamiliar. As an ex-officio member of the Education Committee I have

received great inner joy listening to our Tempie Educator, Joy Wasserman , doing a Shi-ur, a lesson. Part of each meeting Is devoted to enrichment. Spending a few moments listening to Joy has been a real treat.

D'var Torah, or Word of Torah, functions in a similar way. The Temple Board members are privileged each month to hear one of our Rabbis or our Educator for a few moments on a topical subject.

While there are no "perks" (as currently defined in our society) in being on the Board or Education Committee, the best "perk" of all is that of personal enlightenment and self-growth .

JEROME D. MALLER

Jerry is completing his first year on the Board . As Assistant Treasurer, he has found It very gratifying to be able to help financially-troubled members stay within the Temple family. He and his wife Ruthie (a member of Sisterhood's Board) , have been BJBE members for five years.

Milt Salzer

Jerry is a CPA, having been a partner in the international accounting firm of J .K. Lasser & Company and Touche Ross & Co . Five years ago, he formed the firm of Maller, Edidln & Company, P.C. with fellow congregant Ansel Edidin . Jerry's areas of expertise include accounting, auditing and business consulting for privately owned companies.

Before becoming a workaholic, Jerry was President of his homeowners association, a Little League manager, a Cubmaster and involved in many civic and political activities.

Ruthie and Jerry have three children: Bob, an accountant; Susan, a psychologist, PhD candidate, and sign-language interpreter , and David , a professional musician, who recently received a BA in music education.

VICTORIA MACKAY

Vicky grew up in Deerfield in the house her grandfather built when he came to America. She currently resides in Chicago.

She attended Lutheran General Hospital School of Nursing to become a RN in 1974, but switched her career to Business and joined Penncorp Financial, Inc . in

~ ... ~~.,,,,,,. rJl. 'J 1978 where Vicky currently holds the title of Regional Chief Operating Officer and Corporate Meeting Planner.

Vicky joined BJBE in 1983 and initially became Involved in Sisterhood, joining their Borad. While currently a Sisterhood member, she is also Temple Treasurer and has sat on the Temple Board of Trustees for over five years.

Other volunteer responsiblitles include the Regional Outreach Committee of The UAHC as well as being re-elected to the UAHC Board of Trustees. Vicky will be joining the BJBE Staff of Religious School teachers this fall .

In her spare time, she enjoys running races and rollerbladlng, attending Cubs and Bulls games, playing Nintendo with her family and watching heavyweight boxing with her five brothers and one sister. -2··.

MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger The recent events in Los Angeles have saddened all of us,

and as Jews, we feel a responsibility to help the less fortunate , including those who have lost their homes and jobs as a result of the riots . One way which the Board of Directors has chosen to respond to this need is by encouraging contributions to Mazon .

Mazon is an organization which BJBE has supported for several years. This organization offers American Jews a means through which we may add a rich dimension of community service to our private celebrations. Through Mazon , we voluntarily add 3 % to the cost of our celebrations -- a Bar or Bat Mltzvah , a wedding, a birthday or anniversary -- as an offering to help defeat the scourage of hunger here at home and around the world.

Mazon is one of American Jewry's principal means for participating in the twin effort to feed the hungry and put an end to the causes of hunger. In cities across the country, thousands of Jews have become part of the Mazon effort by sharing part of the cost of their simchas. BJBE hopes that you, too , will make a donation to Mazon as part of a life cycle celebration, or simply because of your desire to help make life more meaningful for a less fortunate family.

You may make a donation by sending your check to the Temple office or directly to Mazon: 2288 Westwood Blvd., #200, Los Angeles, CA 90064.

The young people of our Religious School have already made a statement by pledging over $1,000 to Mazon for the people of Los Angeles. Won't you please consider Mazon? It will make an important difference to the less fortunate.

The MAZON Committee gratefully acknowledges donations from the following:

Mindy and Ray Cohen Audrey and Phil Pink

Nancy and Allan Resnick Joan and Lee Sacks

Adult Bar /Bat Mitzvah • Event and Opportunity On Friday night, September 11th, twelve adults will

celebrate becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah at Shabbat Services. They have been studying weekly with Phyllis Steiner (a magnificent teacher) since last fall. We are proud of what they've accomplished, and of them. Mark your calendars to share that Erev Shabbat with them.

Does this sound like something you might/be could/be should/be doing?

You Can and You Should. Think About

NEXT YEAR'S ADULT BAR/BAT MITZVAH CLASS

An adult (with no Hebrew background) can become Bar/Bat Mitzvah at BJBE with one year of preparation and acquire a basic Jewish education in the process.

It takes commitment to an ongoing weekly class. Phyllis Steiner will lead a minimum of six students toward a shared Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony in fall of 1993.

The Class - THURSDAY EVENINGS, 7 :15-9:00, beginning September 17th.

The Fee - $300.00, includes all class sessions (approximately 45) and the Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony. Fee may be paid in installments and grant money is available through the rabbis in case of financial need. For more information contact Phyllis Steiner at the Temple office .

From the Syfria Shelves We thank the families for their contribution to the Birthday

Club in honor of their children: Matthew Kotowsky
