A MESSAGE FROM WILL
All of us at Pacific Science Center are eager to serve you and your students this school year. I invite you to take full advantage of everything that we offer.
Our goal is to ignite curiosity in every child and to cultivate a passion for discovery, experimentation, and critical learning in everyone. We honor science as a never-ending process of inquiry and problem solving, not a static collection of facts. We inspire people, especially young people, to ask questions, develop hypotheses, conduct experiments, and eval-uate evidence in all aspects of their lives. We not only showcase successful invention, but we also demon-strate that failure is a key ingredient of progress.
You and your students can experience our exhibits and programs at Pacific Science Center in Seattle, at the Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center in Bellevue, or at your school with Science on Wheels. During the 2015–16 school year, we welcomed approximately 62,000 students to our Seattle and Bellevue locations. Through Science on Wheels, we served roughly 91,200 students at schools across the state of Washington and parts of Oregon and Idaho.
We want to broaden and deepen the service that we provide to students and educators in 2016–17. We are constantly working to create more reward-ing experiences. For example, we have substantially increased the footprint, operating hours, and programming of Tinker Tank, our interactive design space. We are also working to eliminate economic and other barriers. For example, Google Field Trip Days, Exploration For All, Family Access Member-ships, and the PEMCO Bus make it possible for more people than ever to benefit from what we have to offer. You can learn about scholarship opportunities and other accessibility programs on pages 13, 14, 18 and 23 of this guide.
As educators, you are our heroes. Thank you for everything that you do. I hope that we will see you and your students this year under the arches in Seattle, in the marshes in Bellevue, or at your school!
Sincerely, Will Daugherty, President & C.E.O.
All my experiences with teaching staff have been fab-
ulous. The learning experience that was set up was
developmentally appropriate, challenging while also
building on their prior knowledge.
Fara, 5th Grade Teacher, Mercer IslandField Studies at Mercer Slough
When I asked the kids what the highlights of the
trip were, the hands flew up! There were so many!
They loved the Laser Show, the Butterfly House, the
dinosaur exhibit, the “hamster” wheel and the sea
animals, just to name a few. Our 5th graders will
never forget our field trip to Pacific Science Center.
Happy memories were made with friends and parents
while having a wonderful educational experience.
Thomas, 5th Grade Teacher, RichlandField Trips
It was my fourth time there, but it was like my first
time there. There were so many rooms I haven’t seen
before and everything was so different. I had an
AWESOME TIME!
Charlie, 4th Grader, SeattleField Trips
What a great program and opportunity...to have some
science brought into the classroom in such a fun way!
The students loved the planetarium and learning
about the constellations.
Mary, 2nd Grade Teacher, AberdeenScience On Wheels
Wow! We had a great time at the Science Center
today. The staff was ready to support us as we visited
the exhibits and to answer our questions…The
Planetarium show was well done and supported our
recently finished science space unit. Excellent!
James, 5th Grade Teacher, SeattleField Trips
FIELD TRIPSA field trip to Pacific Science Center is a time-honored tradition for students across Washington. Our hands-on exhibits, shows and innovative programs ignite students’ curiosity for science in a day of exploration meant to enhance your curriculum and spark lifelong interest in science, math, engineering and technology.

A Mystery Awaits!
Footprints, splatter patterns and the powers of observa-tion mark the journey through The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes. The interactive experience combines science with history and culture, bringing to life Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s rich and vibrant stories.
Students learn how Sherlock Holmes, a scientific expert ahead of his time, used seemingly trivial observations of clues others missed to solve some of his era’s most mysterious crimes. His practices and techniques, created by the mind of doctor-turned-author Conan Doyle, changed the way police work was conducted and remain in practice today.
The exhibition features original manuscripts and period artifacts, investigative tools influenced and used by Sher-lock Holmes and interactive crime-solving opportunities. Students are transported into Sherlock Holmes’ London to solve a crime in a world just receiving its introduction to his groundbreaking methods.
The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes is aligned with the Common Core State Standards and the Next Gen-eration Science Standards. To learn more, and to explore the educator guide, visit pacsci.org/field-trips.
To book your field trip, call (206) 443-2925.

7 FIELD TRIPS « 2016–2017 PACSCI.ORG/FIELD-TRIPS
Pacific Science Center, in partnership with The Franklin Insti-tute in Philadelphia, is proud to present an original exhibition focused on one of the most remarkable archaeological finds of the 20th century: China’s extraordinary terracotta warriors.
Ten statues, some with their original color, form the backbone of this one-of-a-kind exhibition that features artifacts from the first imperial dynasty of China. Students learn about the ruler who used his army to unite warring states into one empire and his determination to hold onto his new empire in the afterlife. That determination culminated in a tomb complex covering several square miles, inhabited by thousands of full-sized, fully armed terracotta warriors, horses, dancers and acrobats waiting patiently to serve the emperor after death.
The exhibition highlights the ancient science, technology and engineering knowledge that craftspeople, artists and skilled laborers used to create the statues, their state-of-the-art weaponry and the enormous underground structure to hold the creations. Students discover how contemporary scientists continue to study the under-ground complex, using everything from facial recognition software to ground-penetrating radar that confirms the Terracotta complex still holds many secrets.
Pacific Science Center is privileged to announce honorary co-chairs of the exhibition, The Honorable Gary Locke, for-mer Governor of Washington, U.S. Secretary of Commerce, and U.S. Ambassador to China, and Mona Locke, former First Lady of Washington, senior vice president of corporate communications and marketing for Intellectual Ventures and a former local television reporter and non-profit executive.
