Liturgy Corner Compiled by Pat Raschio (sources Formed, At Home With The Word, Scott Hahn and Loyola Press, Sourcebook) Joy Prepares Our Hearts is the theme of today’s readings. The third Sunday of Advent is called Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete, a Latin word which means “rejoice,” is taken from the entrance antiphon for Sunday’s Mass. This theme is echoed in today’s second reading from the first Letter to the Thessalonians. It is a reminder that Advent is a season of joy because our salvation is already at hand. In his homily for Gaudete Sunday in 2014, Pope Francis taught that to have joy a Christian must do three things: pray, give thanks, and share the Good News. And St. Thomas Aquinas, the “angelic doctor,” defines joy as a fruit of the Holy Spirit that flows immediately from charity, or love of God. Today’s responsorial is taken from Mary’s

words in the Magnificat. Pray these words this week, especially in the Adoration Chapel. The Gospel for today combines a brief passage from the prologue to John’s Gospel with a report on the ministry of John the Baptist. Messengers from the Jewish priests, the Levites and the Pharisees question John about his identity and the meaning of the baptisms that he is performing. John’s Gospel uses these questions to establish the relationship between Jesus and John the Baptist. John the Baptist is not the Messiah, nor is he Elijah or the Prophet. In John’s denials, we hear echoes of the kind of messianic expec-tations that were common in first-century Palestine. The only affirmative response that John the Baptist gives is when he quotes the prophet Isaiah. Upon answering the next question, John announces that the savior they seek is already among them, but as yet unrecognized. John’s response highlights for us an important Advent theme: Jesus has already come into the world as our savior. During Advent, we pray that we will be able to recognize Jesus’ presence in our midst. Advent also reminds us that Jesus will come again to fulfill the promise of salvation. We pray that we will continue to be watchful as we anticipate that great day. The Eucharist: The great spiritual masters teach us that a key to rejoicing always is to work intentionally to give thanks. A heart overflowing with gratitude does not succumb to darkness. Our word for Eucharist actually comes from the Greek eukharistia, meaning “thanksgiving. At Mass, we offer Jesus’ sacrifice in thanksgiving to the Father. By being with Jesus in Adoration, we can rest in this thanksgiving. In the Eucharist, we give thanks for our greatest gift, God himself, and there we learn how to keep this gift always present in our minds so we can truly give thanks and “rejoice always.” This week try to visit the Adoration Chapel or go to a daily Mass. All through this Advent Season we await the coming of Jesus both present and in the second coming. We are able to participate in his presence with us now in the Church and preeminently in the Blessed Sacrament. What do you think is the relationship between prayer and joy? Joy and thanksgiving? How can you pray more and be more thankful? Write your prayer of joy on a star and leave it in the basket in Church.

RCIA: Volunteers are needed to be sponsors for a few of our candidates in RCIA program. A Sponsor must be an adult (over 16), received the Sacrament of Confirmation and Eucharist and be in good standing with the Church. You are living as a faithful Catholic (married in the Church and attending Sunday Mass). SO ALL MAY HEAR

Our church was built to the newest standards of the times in 1965, with plenty of glass and impressive

stonework. And when the church is full, there are less problems with acoustics. However, in recent years,

sound vibrates and bounces off the rock and glass surfaces, making it difficult if not impossible to hear

clearly.

THE CHALLENGE

Over the years various attempts have been made to improve the sound system, but lack of funding and

adequate technology has hampered efforts. Now we believe the time has come for us to make the invest-

ment in a system that experts believe can solve the majority of our problems with sound in our church.

WHY BOSE?

The Bose church sound system offers the most comprehensive and economical approach to improving

sound in challenging acoustics environments like ours. With the help of experts, a system has been pro-

posed that has proven to be very successful in other church

environments in the greater Portland area, who have had

similar acoustical problems.

The system will be set up so sound is broadcast at sitting ear-

level and reaching all cor- ners of the church. The system

will also enable us to use different settings for different

needs, and can be controlled digitally with iPads or notebooks.

YOU CAN HELP!

At our Town Hall meetings, you told us that fixing the sound system in the church should be a top priority.

But until now it has been cost-prohibitive to fix. This project is now feasible and, with your help, could be

in place before the end of the year. Total project cost is expected to be under $30,000. Donations should

be payable to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with the memo “Sound System Project.” Please send

to the parish office or put in the Offertory basket as soon as possible.

PARA QUE TODOS PUEDAN OÍR

Nuestra iglesia fue construida con los más nuevos estándares de los tiempos en 1965, con mucho vidrio y piedra impresionante. Y cuando la iglesia está llena, hay menos problemas con la acústica. Sin embar-go, en los últimos años, el sonido vibra y rebota en las superficies de roca y vidrio, por lo que es difícil, si no imposible, escuchar con claridad. EL RETO A lo largo de los años, se han realizado varios intentos para mejorar el sistema de sonido, pero la falta de fondos y la tecnología adecuada han obstaculizado los esfuerzos. Ahora creemos que ha llegado el momento de que hagamos la inversión en un sistema que los expertos creen que puede resolver la mayoría de nuestros problemas con el sonido en nuestra iglesia. ¿POR QUÉ BOSE? El sistema de sonido de la iglesia Bose ofrece el enfoque más completo y económico para mejorar el sonido en entornos acústicos desafiantes como el nuestro. Con la ayuda de expertos, se ha propuesto un sistema que ha demostrado ser muy exitoso en otros entornos eclesiales en el área metropolitana de Portland, que han tenido problemas acústicos similares. El sistema se establecerá para que el sonido se transmita al nivel del oído y llegue a todos los rincones de la iglesia. There have been questions regarding the obligations of these Holy days. There are two distinct obligations which must be met by attending two Masses. ►One of these Masses should be a Mass of Fourth Sunday of Advent (either Saturday evening, 5:30), or Sunday morning (7:30am or 10:00am)

►The other will be a Christmas Mass (either Sunday evening Christmas Eve 5:00pm or 10:00pm) or Monday morning Christmas Day at 7:30am or 10:00am.

The participation at one Mass only will not fulfil both obligations

Helen Sanford died peacefully on November 24

th.

She attended the 10am Mass. The family will have a get together at Vineyard Place on Saturday, December 23 at 2:30 pm, in the dining room on the 3rd floor, to share stories and celebrate Helen’s life. A Mass will be said for Helen at the Saturday evening mass on December 23rd.
