Joel DeJong, ISU Extension field agronomist who serves northwest Iowa, said the overall condition of soybean and corn plants in his area is quite good. He said Northern Corn Leaf Blight is causing a pre- mature end to some fields in some areas, which will reduce yields. “The disease has exploded in some locations in the last couple of weeks,” DeJong said on September 10. He added Sudden Death Syndrome and a few other diseases are causing problems in beans but it is usu- ally limited to smaller parts of the field. Sunshine and warmer days are needed to finish out the crop, DeJong said. Aaron Saeugling, ISU Extension field agronomist who serves counties in southwest Iowa, said crops in his area look good, for the most part. He added a big issue is the amount of corn and soybean dis- eases this season. The effect the diseases will have on yields won’t be determined until harvest begins. “Crop conditions have deteriorated over the last few weeks in some areas,” said Saeugling. “We are optimistic that Sudden Death Syndrome for most fields occurred late enough to not have huge effect on yields for most producers.” He said some isolated areas of hail damage will create a harvesting challenge due to thin stands and larger populations of weeds, and some areas of re- planted crops will need a warmer-than-normal Sep- tember and early October. Clarke McGrath, ISU Extension field agronomist who serves counties in west central Iowa, said he can use one word to describe the general condition of soybeans and corn crops in his area – “Deterio- rating.” “True, this time of year they are supposed to ‘de- teriorate’ or mature,” McGrath said, “but the process is not going as smoothly as normal, thanks to the weather.” McGrath explained the overabundance of moisture has led to disease issues in both corn and soybean fields that will likely cause harvest headaches, and in some cases, yield losses. “Late season foliar diseases like Northern Corn Leaf Blight are killing corn plants off earlier than we’d like to see in some fields, which creates a multitude of problems,” he said. “Early plant death means lower test weight grain and reduced yields. It can also mean compromised stalk strength, making fields much more susceptible to stalk rot and lodging prior to harvest.” Prematurely dead corn plants are compounding the problems; the grain doesn’t dry as well as if the plant matured normally. This creates a Catch 22 situ- ation, McGrath said. “We want to leave our corn in the field until it is as dry as possible to limit the amount of artificial drying - a slow and expensive process - yet the corn plants that died early and may have wetter-than- usual grain may not stand nearly as well as we need them to in order to get much natural grain drying done,” McGrath explained. Variable conditions, varying results

Crop health rises, falls on whims of natureby Gordon Wolf

Based on observations of Iowa State University (ISU) Extension field agronomists, the overall condi-tion of this year’s crop of corn and soybeans depends on where you farm in western Iowa.

The distance of just a few miles can mean the dif-ference between a bumper crop and a significant yield loss or no crop at all, based on variables in weather patterns.

Joel DeJong, ISU Extension field agronomist who serves northwest Iowa, said the overall condition of soybean and corn plants in his area is quite good. He said Northern Corn Leaf Blight is causing a pre-mature end to some fields in some areas, which will reduce yields.

“The disease has exploded in some locations in the last couple of weeks,” DeJong said on September 10.

He added Sudden Death Syndrome and a few other diseases are causing problems in beans but it is usu-ally limited to smaller parts of the field.

Sunshine and warmer days are needed to finish out the crop, DeJong said.

Aaron Saeugling, ISU Extension field agronomist who serves counties in southwest Iowa, said crops

in his area look good, for the most part. He added a big issue is the amount of corn and soybean dis-eases this season. The effect the diseases will have on yields won’t be determined until harvest begins.

“Crop conditions have deteriorated over the last few weeks in some areas,” said Saeugling. “We are optimistic that Sudden Death Syndrome for most fields occurred late enough to not have huge effect on yields for most producers.”

He said some isolated areas of hail damage will create a harvesting challenge due to thin stands and larger populations of weeds, and some areas of re-planted crops will need a warmer-than-normal Sep-tember and early October.

Clarke McGrath, ISU Extension field agronomist who serves counties in west central Iowa, said he can use one word to describe the general condition of soybeans and corn crops in his area – “Deterio-rating.”

“True, this time of year they are supposed to ‘de-teriorate’ or mature,” McGrath said, “but the process is not going as smoothly as normal, thanks to the weather.”

McGrath explained the overabundance of moisture

has led to disease issues in both corn and soybean fields that will likely cause harvest headaches, and in some cases, yield losses.

“Late season foliar diseases like Northern Corn Leaf Blight are killing corn plants off earlier than we’d like to see in some fields, which creates a multitude of problems,” he said. “Early plant death means lower test weight grain and reduced yields. It can also mean compromised stalk strength, making fields much more susceptible to stalk rot and lodging prior to harvest.”

Prematurely dead corn plants are compounding the problems; the grain doesn’t dry as well as if the plant matured normally. This creates a Catch 22 situ-ation, McGrath said.

“We want to leave our corn in the field until it is as dry as possible to limit the amount of artificial drying - a slow and expensive process - yet the corn plants that died early and may have wetter-than-usual grain may not stand nearly as well as we need them to in order to get much natural grain drying done,” McGrath explained.

IFB China trip promotes Iowa crop tradeby Stasha Padgett

Farmer Gary McCall, of Ute, said Presi-dent of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping is very fond of Iowa. Jinping’s relationship started around 30 years ago when he visited the United States and re-ceived a warm Iowa welcome.

McCall visited China in July with Iowa Farm Bureau (IFB) for the 2014 Market Study Tour of China. Iowa Sister States, a nonprofit that strives to connect Iowa with the global world, helped organize the trip. McCall said the July trip was his sec-ond visit to China; his first was for mis-sion-based purposes. Each trip showed him that relationships are key in China.

IFB hopes to build the Iowa-China re-lationship so Iowa will be the go-to when trade discussions take place. McCall ex-plained IFB selects participants through an application process that takes place at the beginning of the year. Applicants must be willing to contribute and give back to agriculture, have an active inter-est in agriculture and be willing to share information from the trip in a public man-ner.

McCall reported that IFB selected a unique group.

“We were a diverse group in age, gen-der, vocation and geographically,” he said.

Group members included IFB’s vice president, two IFB staff, grain farmers, a retired colonel, educators, Miss Iowa Rodeo Queen 2011, and a turtle farmer. Participants funded the trip on their own, including airfare.

The group’s goal was to learn more about the Chinese culture, agriculture and markets. Group members were to act as a positive link between China and America.

“When there are trade discussions, they will think of us Iowa” McCall said.

McCall added that at one point in their

trip, they discovered that some Chinese citizens believe America sends all of its genetically modified organism (GMO) products to China and keeps non-GMO products for its own use. McCall said that is not true, and IFB hopes the China trips will undo misconceptions such as these. McCall described his trip and shared how he believed it was beneficial in establish-ing positive global relationships.

The group spent its first four days in Beijing and attended meetings and din-ners with provincial governors and Chi-nese agriculture officials. McCall reported the meetings helped bring more insight on the inner workings of international trade. McCall said he especially enjoyed meeting with the U.S. officials at the U.S. Embassy and the U.S. Grains Council.

McCall said the group found that China is more advanced than people might

think. Between days five and seven of the

visit, the group visited a modern Chinese dairy operation in the Hebei Province that consisted of 800 Holstein cows. They also visited a corn processing plant that made pharmaceuticals and participated in a seminar at the Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

McCall said China farms are a lot small-er than those in America; a typical farm is no more than one acre and most plant-ing, cultivating and harvesting is done by hand.

Land ownership is not a part of Chi-nese agriculture; all land is leased from the government and the lease is handed down from generation to generation.

McCall recalled one of his most memo-rable experiences, visiting the Jilin Prov-ince. The group visited an atypical farm

of 1,700 acres; seven farmers created a cooperative and work together and share machinery, including combines.

The Chinese government guarantees $8 or $9 a bushel for corn and around $20 per bushel for soybeans. The coop is also paid to store the grain until it is needed for the government’s periodic grain auc-tions.

McCall said China is working hard to make agriculture a desirable field to enter.

“One of China’s biggest challenges is keeping young people on the farm,” Mc-Call said.

He added that farming in China is con-sidered to be a lower prestige. McCall quoted a Chinese official who said, “We need less part-time farmers and more professional farmers whose sons and daughters will stay on the farm and adopt the new farming methods and technolo-gies needed to increase our agricultural production. We admire Iowa’s family farm traditions of second, third, fourth and fifth generation farming families. We would like to emulate this transition of farming skills to the next generation of Chinese farmers too.”

McCall said the trip offered a lot of use-ful information and memorable experi-ences; therefore, he found it hard to pin-point highlights.

“I can only speak to the specific areas that I saw,” he said in explaining that China is a very big country and viewing one part of the country doesn’t mean you know everything.

He believes Iowa and China relations have a positive future.

“There’s a tremendous opportunity provided that politics don’t get in the way,” McCall said.

He also said challenges will arise due to language barriers and misconceptions like the GMO rumors.

Chinese-made combines wait to be used at a 1,700-acre farm that is managed by seven farmers. Gary McCall, of Ute, went to China for Iowa Farm Bureau’s 2014 Market Study Tour. McCall said most farmers own only one acre of land. Photos submitted

POET-DSM cellulosic ethanol plant now in operation

The first commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol plant in the United States was celebrated with an open house on September 3. POET-DSM Advanced Biofuels, LLC, a joint venture of Royal DSM and POET, LLC, is located near Emmetsburg.

The plant, named “Project LIBERTY,” was formally opened in the presence of His Majesty Willem-Alexan-der, King of the Netherlands, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, Deputy Under Secretary Michael Knotek of the Department of Energy, Governor Terry Branstad and Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds of Iowa, other digni-taries and thousands of guests.

Project LIBERTY converts baled corn cobs, leaves, husk and stalk into renewable fuel. The plant has officially started up, processing its first batch of biomass into cel-lulosic ethanol and is moving forward toward continu-ous operation. At full capacity, it will convert 770 tons of biomass per day to produce ethanol at a rate of 20 million gallons per year, later ramping up to 25 million gallons per year, according to a release from POET.

The POET release said this first commercial-scale cel-lulosic ethanol facility marks a huge step forward in the wider adoption of biofuels, both in North America and elsewhere. It is also a victory for the Renewable Fuel Stan-dard (RFS), which prompted increased investment into advanced biofuels that accelerated development of the

new technology. The RFS is a critical tool in moving the United States beyond 10 percent ethanol use to allow the new technology to expand to other parts of the country.

In other parts of the world the development of cellulosic ethanol is expected to be boosted as POET-DSM’s LIB-ERTY process and technology to effectively convert agri-cultural residue using a proprietary cocktail of enzymes and yeast becomes available via licensing.

The Departments of Energy and Agriculture and the State of Iowa have been important partners in bringing the technology to commercial scale, the POET release said. The DOE awarded $100 million in grants to support the costs of engineering and construction, as well as biomass collection and infrastructure. The State of Iowa took a lead role in helping make Project LIBERTY a reality by contrib-uting $20 million in grants for capital costs and feedstock logistics. USDA invested $2.6 million to support the de-livery of more than 58,000 dry tons of corn crop residue, helping establish the feedstock logistics network.

Assuming continued support from the RFS program and depending on the adoption rate of cellulosic etha-nol both in and outside the United States, POET-DSM Advanced Biofuels LLC has the potential to achieve net sales of about $250 million from bio-ethanol and license income by 2020 with EBITDA margins clearly above av-erage.

Project LIBERTY by the numbers• Capital costs are $275 million.• Fuel from Project LIBERTY represents a GHG reduction

of 85%-95% over gasoline.• The plant employs more than 50 people directly, and

biomass harvesting is creating another 200 indirect jobs in the community. In addition, hundreds of people were involved in the construction of the plant.

• The State of Iowa has estimated a $24.4 billion impact on the state over 20 years.

• Project LIBERTY will consume 285,000 tons of biomass annually from a 45-mile radius of the plant.

• Farmers remove approximately 1 ton of residue (~25%) per acre.

• Project LIBERTY will spend approximately $20 million annually purchasing biomass from area farmers, pro-viding additional income to the farmers.

• Project LIBERTY will produce up to 25 million gallons of cellulosic bio-ethanol annually

A friend of mine deliv-ered her first baby in June, so I traveled over Labor Day weekend to see her in Ari-zona and the new baby ... and her husband of course.

I had waited for three months because I thought I should give the immediate family first chance at visit-ing. Isn’t that some sort of rule? I made my reserva-tions months ago, and was alternately excited and filled with dread.

I hate the heat ... a lot. I hate hot weather so much that when I hit retirement age instead of going to Ari-zona during the winter I’m planning on going to Alas-ka in the summer.

A couple months ago I checked to see what the av-erage temperature in Arizo-na is at the end of August and beginning of Septem-ber. To my dread, the highs

were in the 100’s. That’s right, triple digits. The lows were in the 80’s though, so at least it “cooled down” at night.

Everyone kept telling me that I’d be fine because Arizona has a dry heat. I wasn’t convinced. In all fairness, the heat of Iowa doesn’t bother me as much as our humidity. Sometimes I feel as though I’m trying to breath through a straw on really humid days.

Upon landing on what I believe was the surface of the sun, I received an oven blast of 108-degree heat as I walked out the airport doors, I was not amused. I promptly decided that cool water would be my friend for the next four days.

In about a day, I was ac-climated to Arizona’s “dry” heat which turned out to be not at all that bad. I was

right, water was my friend.Water, however, was not

our friend on the farm near Denison during that time.

While I was in Arizona, my husband and sons de-cided that it would be fun to drive to a friend’s busi-ness about six hours away to scope out heifers for next year’s projects.

When the high winds, torrential downpour and possible tornado hit the area, I was a three-hour airplane ride away and the rest of my family was a six-hour drive in the opposite direction.

My husband had a neigh-bor check the farm for damage to structures, and everything seemed fine. We lost a small branch on a tree near our house, the tree I fear will come crash-ing down into our kitchen someday when it’s old and

decayed. We also lost a green apple tree that was on it’s last leg as well.

What the guys didn’t know until they returned

was that the 4-H calves had gotten out and were across the road “playing” in the pasture with our other cow herd.

Usually this wouldn’t be a huge problem, as the heifers are so tame that the boys could walk in the pas-ture, put the leads on them, and walk them back across the road to their barn. But, we’re talking about scared cattle here, and I was told it wasn’t that simple.

To make matters worse, one of the heifers decided to take a swim in the creek and was stuck in the mud. The boys struggled for a bit, but got her out. She seems to be doing better now.

I’m doing better, too, now that I’m back in my lovely Iowa and the nice cool weather of fall is upon us.

Now, I wonder what we can do about the dry part.

by Gordon WolfAs the time to harvest crops approach-

es, Iowa State University (ISU) Exten-sion field agronomists advised farm-ers to turn their attention to safety, as well as the operation of their harvesting equipment.

Joel DeJong, ISU Extension field agronomist for northwest Iowa, said farmers should double check that all their Slow Moving Vehicle (SMV) signs are highly visible on all their slow mov-ing equipment.

“Check your lighting to be certain you will be visible when traveling down the road,” he added. “Most accidents occur late in the day, so when the harvest starts, try to stay rested.”

Aaron Saeugling, Extension field agronomist for southwest Iowa, said farmers need to prepare for handling wet grain this fall and muddy condi-tions at harvest time.

Clarke McGrath, Extension field agronomist who serves counties in west central Iowa, anticipates a later-than-normal and a longer-than-normal harvest season, which will be frustrat-ing and stressful for producers.

He provided the following advice, looking at the likelihood of more late-night work to expedite the harvest:w “Fatigue increases the odds of mis-

takes and accidents. We can’t avoid fa-tigue, because working normal hours and getting enough rest just isn’t likely to work out this fall. So the best we can do is to be as cautious and have as much situational awareness as pos-sible. There is a long list of safety rec-ommendations that go with all our trac-tors, grain carts, augers, combines and other equipment, so rather than go over

much of that it is probably quicker to say just keep your head in the game and be alert for risks.w “It’s difficult to imagine needing

them now, but there may be a point during harvest where the crops actually do dry out and we have a greater risk of fire. So, going back to my firefighter roots, make sure you have enough fire protection equipment. In case of fire, call 911 first, and then attack with fire extinguishers if it is safe to do so. A fire can double in size in less than a minute; burning embers blown down-wind can spread the fire well beyond the control of your fire extinguishers in just seconds. Two ABC-type fire extin-guishers are recommended - a smaller 10-pound unit in the cab and a larger 20-pound extinguisher at ground level on the combine. Invert and shake the extinguishers once or twice a season to ensure machine vibrations don’t com-pact the powder inside. A shovel to throw dirt can also help.w “With the after-dark work facing

us, ensure your equipment has enough lighting for both safety during trans-port on the roads and field operation.w “Harvest means needing extra

manpower, some of whom may be in-experienced with some of the equip-ment. Take this to heart from some-one who learned the hard way - take time prior to hitting the field to train your employees on proper operation of equipment, safety procedures and what to do in case of any sort of potential ac-cident or emergency. Have them dem-onstrate and practice what you have trained them on. Then do a few more training and testing evolutions to en-sure proficiency.”

CROPS, from Page 1

McGrath added, “It puts growers in a tough spot trying to decide how long to let it stand and dry versus the risk of lodging.”

McGrath said soybeans plants have also suffered from the wet weather, and many kinds of late season diseases have been observed - Sudden Death Syndrome, Brown Stem Rot, Stem Canker, Top Die-back, Downy Mildew and Frogeye Leaf Spot. He said in some cases, only small areas of fields have been affected, but unfortunately, in other cases, the small patches have grown quickly with the heavy August and September rains.

“The bottom line is that, much like corn, late season soybean disease can trim yields significantly,” McGrath said.

“Some can also create issues with normal soybean maturation and create harvest challenges like pod splitting and shatter.”

Recent cool temperatures aren’t help-ing the crops, either, McGrath said. As the plants continue to deteriorate from disease on top of the normal maturation processes, the cool temperatures are slowing down the grain fill and dry-down process, add-ing time until the crop reaches maturity.

The risk of loss of grain from lodging and pod shatter and splitting and other weather-related losses increases as the season advances to the sometimes unco-operative late fall harvest weather.

Damage reportOnly a small percentage of the crops in

the nine northwest counties that DeJong serves received damage in the storms that raged across Iowa on Sunday, August 31; the strong wind flattened corn in a strip across Woodbury County.

“It will be difficult to harvest and like-ly will shut down the corn development somewhat early - reducing yields,” said

DeJong. Harvest will be tough in those fields.”

Saeugling said crops in his area re-ceived some wind damage in the August 31 storm and the September 9 storm. He expected some lodging of corn in the fields that were hit by the strong winds.

In a report issued soon after the August 31 storm, McGrath said it was difficult to determine how many acres were damaged in his area as the storm was so violent and widespread. He said tens of thou-sands of acres were impacted moderately to severely and thousands of acres of corn were flattened by both straight line and tornado-related winds while many more acres were damaged to a degree but not totally flattened.

He said he saw crop damage from Pottawattamie County through Wood-bury County, and as far east as the Des Moines/Ames area.

McGrath said soybeans were damaged as well, but this damage is more difficult to see without covering the fields on foot.

“We know the damage was severe and widespread when my fire department – Harlan - a member of the Region IV Saw Strike Team - was deployed to the Sergeant Bluff area for storm recovery. If buildings and trees took a beating, these nearly mature crops didn’t stand a chance,” he said.

Corn that is lodged will have grain fill, test weight and harvest moisture all af-fected negatively, and producers will ex-perience losses from operating a combine in downed corn, McGrath said.

In addition, corn that is on the ground could have both yield and quality of grain further affected if it develops ear rot pathogens.

“It is hard to imagine a more frustrating scenario for growers than to have fought the weather all season and to have a de-cent crop standing in late August, only

to have it decimated a few weeks prior to harvest,” said McGrath. “It doesn’t hap-pen very often, but I’ve been through it with customers before. Almost all of them concur that it is the worst of the many severe weather scenarios that they face in their careers.”

He said the damage and resulting yield loss for both corn and beans will be across a continuum, so it will be difficult to get a true read on how bad it is across the board prior to harvest.

The August delugeThe fields in northwest Iowa handled

the above-average rainfall in August quite well, said DeJong. He added a few locations probably suffered a little yield loss from excess water.

“But as a whole, it is much better than no rain in August at all, and that has hap-pened in recent years, too,” he pointed out.

Saeugling said the effect of the exces-sive rainfall in August and early Sep-tember can be viewed as a positive and a negative.

“On one hand, the extra moisture can help grain fill for both corn and soybeans, however the down side is an increase in grain moisture, disease, lodging and ma-turity,” he said.

McGrath said the adage “rain makes grain” is true most of the time, but the August rainfall was so much greater than normal it was counterproductive for corn and soybeans.

“We had the unfortunate combination of excess moisture and favorable temper-atures that were a near perfect environ-ment for plant diseases,” he said. “While we will have some areas with great yields, we’ll also have areas where the excess rain and the resulting disease pressure will greatly complicate harvest and hurt yields.”

Scouting reportDeJong said producers should scout

corn and soybeans to evaluate which diseases are present for future plan-ning.

“There isn’t much that can be done about it now,” he said.

He added producers should begin to evaluate how good the stalk quality is in the corn fields.

“Some stalk rot is appearing, and the ability to stand up well until a late har-vest might be compromised,” DeJong said.

Saeugling and McGrath also advised farmers to scout fields for stalk rot and disease.

“This will be beneficial for farmers to assess any grain harvest issues,” Saeugling said.

harvest outlookDeJong said a little bit of silage har-

vest began the week of August 31 through September 6 at a couple dairy farms in northwest Iowa and anticipat-ed more silage harvest would take place late in the week of September 7 through 13 as fields dry out.

In Saeugling’s area, corn silage har-vest and some corn earlage has begun. He anticipated that with dry weather in late September, harvest may begin the first part of October in some areas.

In the area McGrath serves, silage harvest started during the week of Au-gust 31 through September 6.

He expected the silage harvest to con-tinue for another week or two but rain will unfortunately slow the process.

He expected the start of the grain har-vest could be another week or 10 days away before some of the first produc-ers start in on early corn, due to the cool temperatures that are slowing the maturation process.

ISU faculty to lead monitoring of Black Hawk Lake watershed

A new monitoring effort of the Black Hawk Lake wa-tershed by Iowa State University researchers will an-swer some lingering questions regarding the long-term impact of land management practices on water quality.

Michelle Lynn Soupir, an associate professor of agri-cultural and biosystems engineering, said the five-year duration of the study will allow the research team to take a longer look at the watershed than typical stud-ies that last between one and three years. The longer-term approach will paint a more complete picture of the impact of land management practices on surrounding farmland, which sometimes take years to significantly affect water quality.

The wealth of long-term data to be collected during the study could have ramifications for impaired water-sheds across the state, Soupir said.

“There’s a lag time between when you implement land use practices and when you start to see water quality improvement,” she said.

“We need a better understanding of that lag time, and five years of data will help fill in some of those gaps.”

The research is funded by a grant totaling $461,661 awarded in July by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The funds originally came from the Envi-ronmental Protection Agency under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act.

Black Hawk Lake covers around 957 acres near Lake

View in Sac County. The Iowa DNR declared the lake an impaired waterway due in large part to sediment from nearby farmland washing into the watershed. The lake also suffers from algae and turbidity problems.

The Iowa DNR has undertaken efforts to rehabilitate the lake in recent years, and the ISU study will aid in the process, Soupir said.

The research team has chosen three sites in the 13,156-acre watershed where automated monitors were installed to collect water samples and measure the flow of water through the area.

The monitoring sites are located on land showcasing a range of land use practices that affect water quality, such as drainage tiles, terraces and grass waterways.

“Although the lake is an impaired body, the com-munity has a history of farmers and landowners im-plementing land management practices to improve the health of the lake,” said Soupir, who teaches a course in watershed monitoring every other academic year. “That’ll make this a particularly interesting case study.”

The samplers will use modems that trigger the cell phones of the researchers to let them know when runoff has occurred and it’s time to collect the water samples. The samples will be brought back to campus where they’ll be tested in a laboratory for the presence of ni-trogen, phosphorous and suspended solids, Soupir said.

Berry nutritiousby Gordon Wolf

As shoppers at the Denison Hy-Vee store walked past the produce aisle on September 6, Stacey Rosener, a soph-omore at Ar-We-Va High School in Westside, drew them in with her flavorful presentation about aronia berries.

Rosener, who was the Midwest Aronia Berry Associa-tion’s 2012 Promoter of the Year, had plenty of tempting aronia berry treats for shoppers to sample, as well as a healthy helping of aronia berry facts and recipes.

The display at Hy-Vee was among a series of “Healthy Choices” Recipe Relay stops scheduled throughout the state, leading up to the North American Aronia Berry Festival at Sawmill Hollow Family Farm near Missouri Valley on September 20 and 21.

Rosener was first introduced to aronia berries during a family outing to the festival when she was a third-grader. She stored the information in the back of her mind for several years until an article and recipe in a farm newspaper triggered a memory.

She tried a cookie recipe that was published in the farm newspaper but it didn’t turn out right, so she con-tacted Mary Mathiasen, the person who submitted the recipe.

Mathiasen put her in contact with individuals with the Midwest Aronia Berry Association. From that point on, Rosener began researching recipes online and entered foods in the Crawford County Fair. Her aronia berry cre-ations advanced to the Iowa State Fair where they won ribbons.

Rosener said the unique aronia berry is something that interests her because of its nutritious value (it is high in antioxidants) and its flavor.

“It is not something that everyone uses and not every-one knows about, but they should,” said Rosener. “They are good for you and taste good.”

Andrew Pittz, a sixth generation family farmer, whose parents started the Sawmill Hollow aronia berry farm 20 years ago, said the recipe relay and Hy-Vee’s involve-ment is making history as the grocery store chain is the first to carry the berry store to store.

Pittz said the first aronia berry bushes planted in the nation with the intent to farm them was at Sawmill Hol-low. He explained because aronia berry plants weren’t highly available, his parents had to propagate more plants from leaf cuttings and to help other farmers grow

ally,” said Pittz. The aronia berry festival, which will run from 10 a.m.

to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, September 20 and 21, started as a farm field day back in 2005. About 35 people attended the first field day.

“We still have people coming to the festival to learn how to plant aronia berry plants, but today the festival incorporates recipe exchanges and family fun activities. It’s kind of neat that it’s all happening at the farm and its all based around Iowa’s aronia berry,” said Pittz.

Nearly 4,000 individuals attended the 2013 North American Aronia Berry Festival – farmers, gardeners and

family members looking for an activity and an outing.“The festival has turned into a celebration of the Loess

Hills culture, western Iowa and artisans, in addition to the aronia berry,” said Pittz.

This year’s festival will feature each individual, their recipes and each community involved in the recipe relay stops.

“It goes well beyond promoting the recipes. It’s like an ingredient for success that makes all our towns unique,” Pittz said.

He said everything at the festival – the berry, the farm-ers, and artisans and the local musicians, complement each other in supporting western Iowa, Iowa artists and Iowa family businesses.

Pittz said the aronia berry was on the threatened and/or endangered species list, and through the work at the remote location at Sawmill Hollow Family Farm, the berry was brought back and a new Iowa industry devel-oped. He said it is part of the farm’s mission: “Together, we grow healthier families, farms, and communities.”

Pittz spoke about the concept of a 21st century barn-raising, where farmers and business owners help each other.

He said 80 percent of small businesses close their doors every 18 months, and only one percent of Ameri-cans are engaged in farming.

“You have that ‘America needs farmers’ approach, and we can reverse both of those statistics, and all of us can be a part of that,” Pittz said. “That’s another thing we’re trying to do as a community-based business. We’re able to say, ‘Here’s what we do, check it out. What do you do? We want to support you, too.’”

Andrew Pittz with the Sawmill Hollow Family Farm and Stacey Rosener, a Westside 4-H Club member from Vail, promoted aronia berries with a display at Hy-Vee in Deni-son on Saturday. The display was one stop in a state-wide “Healthy Choices” Recipe Relay leading up to the North American Aronia Berry Festival at Sawmill Hollow near Mis-souri Valley next weekend. Quilt Block of the MonthQuilters can make a mystery quilt this year. Each month, readers will find directions

to make the block of the month. Each unfinished block will measure 12½” (or 12” when finished). Please refer to the January, 2014 and May, 2014 issues for equipment, fabric, and thread suggestions to finish this quilt.

For September’s block you will need two contrasting colors (unless you are using scraps). A is a light fabric, and B is a medium.

Cutting instructionsFabric A: Cut two 4” squares and four 3½” x 6½” rectangles.Fabric B: Cut two 4” squares and four 3½” squares.

Piecing Instructions1. Using the 4” squares, make four half square triangles. Lay right

sides together and draw a diagonal line on lightest fabric. Sew a scant ¼” on both sides of the line. Cut on the drawn line. Press to the dark side.

2. Lay out the entire block according to the pattern below. Sew the half square trian-gles to the 3½” squares, then sew the 3½” x 6½” rectangles to that block to form four smaller 6½” blocks.

3. Sew the four smaller blocks together. The final block should measure 12½” unfin-ished.

4. Now, store this block (and fabric) until the October Iowa Farm and Ranch arrives with the next one!

This series is being submitted by Cindy Kaufman of The Family Quilt Shop in Fort Dodge, Iowa. If you need assistance, please call her at 515-576-0295.

ISU economist advises vigilance in marketing grain

Marketing corn and soy-beans promises to be a challenge for Iowa grain producers who expect to harvest record crops this fall, according to an Iowa State University Extension and Outreach crop markets economist.

“For both crops, whether you use the futures market or USDA projections, farm-ers are staring at prices below the ISU estimated costs of production, which are $4.50 per bushel for corn and $11 per bushel for soybeans,” said Chad Hart, an associate professor of economics.

“So pricing opportunities are thin.”

New crop corn prices in central Iowa are in the $3 to $3.25 range, while prices for soybeans are in $9.50 to $10 range.

The last yield report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated a

little more than 14 billion bushels of corn production, topping last year’s record, Hart said. Feed, ethanol and export demand were all increased, raising total demand to 13.435 bil-lion bushels. Carryout, the amount left over, would stand at 1.8 billion bushels.

Soybean production was projected to be 3.8 billion bushels. Demand for the 2014 crop was unchanged at 3.54 billion bushels. Car-ryout was raised to 430 mil-lion bushels.

Hart advises farmers to prepare for harvest, ready their bins for storage and work out break-even prices.

“When we do get ral-lies - and we will, but they will likely be short-lived - farmers need to be ready to pounce. Watch for basis plays as we move towards harvest,” he said.

Basis is the difference between the futures price in

Chicago and the local cash price. In marketing crops, producers can make mar-keting choices that target the futures price alone, the basis alone or the combina-tion of the two (the local cash price).

“With a basis play, pro-ducers may wish to base selling choices on the basis alone - the most common choice is a basis contract - to grab a good basis value, while allowing the futures price time for potential im-provement,” Hart said.

Exports could bring a bullish surprise for corn.

“For soybeans, exports are already at record lev-els. Can that record de-mand continue? For corn, the 2014 export projection is more than 600 million bushels below the record, so there is plenty of room for growth, if the rest of the world could use a little more corn,” he said.
