OUR VISION

SMART CITIES

BUILDING OPERATION

RETROFIT

DESIGN

MASTERPLANNING

To bring design, operation and the smart city together, we are creating decision support tools for city architects and urban planners with respect to how to design their city and its subsystems at any stage of the cities life. This includes tools to inform urban development plans, tools to inform and incentivise the integration of Renewable Energy Technologies and ICT and Control Technologies and tools to optimise an existing cities systems and networks.

KEY POINTS

– Decision Making Tools for City Architects and Urban Planners

– 3D Visual City Simulation Tools

– Sustainable Urban Indicators for Energy Related Decision Making

– Connections with Simulation and Geographical Information & City Databases

– Whole Life Neighbourhood Analysis

At IES, we are constantly pushing the boundaries of design and simulation technology. This includes integration with Building Information Modelling (BIM) and interoperability with other technologies in the design, construction and energy management sectors.

KEY POINTS

– Pushing the boundaries of design and simulation

– BIM & Interoperability

– Better Building Design

– Closing the Gap between Estimated and Actual Energy Consumption

– Optimisation for BREEAM & LEED & high performance buildings

Our research for retrofit design and decision making focuses on how to use simulation to adapt and upgrade existing buildings to be sustainable and energy efficient throughout their lifetime. The aim is to provide tools that will assess the way in which current buildings are operated and help find solutions that will be adaptable over time, as well as for performance contracting.

KEY POINTS

– Retrofit Design & Decision Making

– Predictive Design for Performance Contracting

– SMART Buildings

RETROFIT FOR MANUFACTURING ENVIRONMENT

Further to this, IES is stepping outside the boundaries of just the building and is looking in particular at the manufacturing environment and the interactions between the manufacturing processes and the building environment.

Here our research focuses on how the simulation environment can be exploited to intelligently control the building. This includes investigation into Model Based Control for Fault Detection Identification Analysis, Optimisation of the Building while in use and Predictive Control based on future weather data. The aim is to provide appropriate and accurate information to allow Energy Managers understand where inefficiencies are present and mitigate or eradicate these inefficiencies completely. This information will help to plan energy efficiency actions based on actual energy production and consumption, presented as real savings and end-user’s comfort levels.

KEY POINTS

– Intelligent & Model Based Control

– Using Simulation for Fault Detection & Analysis

– Real-Time Optimisation & Control of Buildings

– Real-Time Prediction of Building Use

– Direct connections between Simulation Environment & BMS / Building Sensors

With a focus on how a city can operate intelligently, we are investigating the interactions between a portfolio of buildings, the electricity grid and Renewable Energy Technologies. This includes demand response and tariff analysis and examining the interactions and connections of buildings at district level. Further investigation into the simulation of water and waste networks to maximise energy efficiency is also being carried out along with investigations into transport routes and the electric vehicle networks. The ultimate aim is to understand how the city performs as a set of sub-systems.

KEY POINTS

– Simulation of Portfolio of Buildings across a city

– District modelling and simulation

– Modelling the connections between Buildings, the Electricity Grid and Renewable Technologies

– Demand Response Analysis and Tariff Analysis

– Simulation of Water & Waste Networks

– Simulation of Transport Network and the EV Grid

MASTER PLANNING RETROFIT

SMART CITIES

DESIGNBUILDING OPERATION

OPTIMISE Funded through Technology Strategy Board

The OPTIMISE tool was specifically designed to give better guidance on design decisions and enable the delivery of low impact and zero carbon buildings in the UK. The tool has the ability to optimise complex design factors such as glazed area, choice of construction materials, building orientation and compliance based on objectives such as energy consumption, carbon emissions and cost and constraints such as achieving specific daylight factor values.

LESSONS Funded through Technology Strategy Board

LESSONS is an innovative website, where case studies from previous projects are stored in an online database. Practitioners can use the website to search for ‘lessons’ from past projects where they can use the information to influence and improve the Designs they are working on. Practitioners will also be able to upload their own ‘Lessons’ from projects they have completed. The innovative aspect of LESSONS is the link to the IES Virtual Environment, where IES simulation models can be uploaded and downloaded from the LESSONS website.

IMPACT Funded through Technology Strategy Board

IMPACT will set the standard for the next generation in building environmental impact and cost assessment. Based on new computer aided design techniques, this tool allows users to quantify the embodied environmental and cost implications on a whole-building basis. This facilitates the improvement in design and decision making for both new design and retrofit projects.

CitySUMS Funded through Scottish Enterprise SMART

Integrating the IES Virtual Environment with SketchUp and a set of Sustainable Urban Metrics (SUMs), to assess the sustainability of a city.

FORTISSIMO Funded through EU FP7

Factories of the Future Resources, Technology, Infrastructure and Services for Simulation and Modelling. Provision of cloud-based simulation services to make advanced simulation more accessible to European Manufacturing, particularly to SMEs.

DESIGNSUCCESSFUL PROJECTS

THERM Funded through Technology Strategy Board

The THERM tool is an integrated tool for sustainable manufacturing, which takes into account the building design and the manufacturing processes and allows manufacturers to understand and reduce their energy use. The THERM project allowed IES to explore innovations in a new market, that of the manufacturing processes and environment, which would not have been explored without collaborative R&D and the partners that were involved.

SCAN Funded through Scottish Enterprise

This state of the art tool from IES R&D goes beyond the traditional use of building simulation at the design stage. It improves operational performance by providing the user with tools to more accurately ‘calibrate’ the model of the building using actual recorded information from the Building Operational Data.

Comparing the differences between the simulated calibrated model and the Building Operational Data enables the user to identify where the building is underperforming and helps diagnose problems.

VERY SCHOOL Funded through EU CIP

Energy Action Navigator which provides “how to” information, enabling tools, and cutting edge intelligent energy saving strategies by running optimisation scenarios dedicated specifically to the needs of schools. It integrates Smart LED Lighting, Smart Meters, Building Energy Management Systems, Energy Simulation and Energy Action Management.

SMART CITIESSUCCESSFUL PROJECTS

GLASGOW FUTURE CITIES Funded through Technology Strategy Board

An app to allow building owners to understand how to reduce energy consumption and retrofit their buildings. The app will act as a gateway between users and technology suppliers and will ultimately facilitate city-scale assessments of energy use. A 3D web portal is also being developed that will allow users to view the city’s energy performance at both district and building level. View the finished app at www.glasgowenergyapp.org

MIRIAM Funded through Technology Strategy Board

Feasibility study which investigated how to create an interoperable Neighbourhood Manager and City Information Model that integrates both real-time and building specific information in a city to analyse and understand power and heat data at a macro-scale. Initial tool development focused on providing customised displays for key user needs; Building Owners which need to identify potential simple and deep retrofit measures, the Public Community which need to identify district heating schemes, the Business Community which needs to identify building portfolio opportunities and Technology/Service Providers which need to identify target markets.

SUCCESSFUL PROJECTSIES has an extremely high success rate with its completed projects. Many have been held up as exemplars by funding bodies because of deliverables achieved and have resulted in commercial products facilitating growth of IES.

UMBRELLA Funded through EU FP7

Innovative web-based decision support application which will connect all stakeholders involved in energy efficient design and retrofitting of the built environment.

HAR-WIN Funded through EU FP7 Development of new window and window frame materials which will enable the creation of a new type of building where window and architectural glass functionalities will merge to create multifunctional facades that are adjustable according to geographic and cultural needs.
