IEEE Malaysia Section Newsletter Third Quarter | July – September 2013 http://www.ieeemy.org The IEEE Region 10 Student/GOLD/WIE Congress is biennial event of IEEE Region 10. The 2013 congress (11-14 July) focuses on empowering Student, GOLD (Graduates Of the Last Decade), and the WIE (Women In Engineering) entities of IEEE. It provides an opportunity for young IEEE professionals from Asia-Pacific to network, learn from IEEE experienced volunteers, and to share the knowledge, skills and ideas. The 2013 Congress has also included the participation of 15 SIGHT Coordinators. The Student Branch participation at R10 Congress was very strong. This was reflected among many activities such as poster competition on projects, student branch exhibition competition, and cultural display and dances. Esther Ling, Chair of IEEE Student Branch Curtin University Sarawak Campus, did a good job in showcasing student activities. Additionally, the five Congress keynotes highlighted the active engagement of students to improve member experience and satisfaction. In short, IEEE aspires its members to have productive, distinguished and rewarding careers.

4th IEEE Curtin Sarawak Exhibition on Technology of the New Era
The event was jointly organized by IEEE Curtin Sarawak student branch, Electrical & Computer Engineering Department of Curtin Sarawak, and IEEE Engineering, Medicine & Biology Society Malaysia Chapter. It was held on 22-23 August 2013. The objectives of the exhibition were to showcase students’ projects, create technological awareness for everyday use, encourage the appreciation of technology and engineering in the new era, and enable the localization and contextualization of future research directions. There were 18 student projects from 4 universities competing for the top 3 projects of the year awards. The exhibition offered students and visitors the opportunity to explore new technologies besides being able to meet and network with industry and technology experts like X-Fab, F Secure, Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), DreamCatcher, and IEEE Malaysia. Additionally, the final year students were able to have a walk-in interview session at X-Fab booth. There were workshops on “How to assemble a computer the fastest way” and “Cable Crimping”. “Train the Trainer” was yet another workshop in Arduino software for the undergraduates. The two-day event was also filled with interesting talks: “How to get hired? Expectation and challenges working in the high technology industry” by X-Fab; “IEEE membership: Choices and opportunities for serving and being served” by Malaysia Section; “Relevance of EMBS in Malaysia” by EMBS; “The state of the Net” by F Secure; “Opportunities in IEEE-EPICS by EMBS; “Embedded systems and its career prospect in Malaysia” by DreamCatcher; and “ICT as a career of choice” by MDeC.

IEEE Photonics Society (IPS) Malaysia Chapter was awarded the IPS Senior Member Initiative Awards 2013 from IPS HQ
IEEE R10 Section and Chapter has approved a grant of USD700 each for two community involvement projects "IEEE Malaysia Stands by Our Youths,” and "IEEE Malaysia Eid and National Day Gathering.”
2013 IEEE R10 WIE has awarded a grant of USD300 to support Malaysia WIE Engineering Outreach Program.
