EDS Chapter Partners Program

• All EDS AdCom members are invited and encouraged to be chapter partners

• The responsibilities of a chapter partner are as follows:– To establish a continuing dialogue (via e-mail and/or telephone with the Chapter Chair and other

members– *Attend yourself or arrange for a lecture/AdCom member to attend at least one chapter meeting

in a two-year period– *Whenever possible, meeting with Chapter Chairs/Officers at regional chapter chair meetings

usually scheduled in conjunction with one of EDS' conferences and/or AdCom Meeting Series– *Support and confirm with the Chapter Chair the submission of annual chapter activities report

to the SRC Chair/Vice-Chair(s) by 1 July– *Additionally, Partners are asked to submit a yearly report on the chapters for which they are

responsible for.  The report should be submitted to the VIce-President of Regions/Chapters, SRC Officers, Chapter Chair and EDS Executive Office

• The partners should try to combine visits to chapters with their travel. If necessary, some travel support will be provided by the RCCC.

EDS Sponsored Awards

• EDS Region 9 Outstanding Student Paper Award - Presented biennially to promote, recognize and support meritorious research achievement on the part of Region 9 students, and their advisors, through the public recognition of their published work, within the Electron Devices Society’s field of interest. The recipient is awarded a certificate and a subsidy of up to $1,000 to attend the EDS supported conference in Region 9 where the award will be presented.

Page 44: IEEE ELECTRON DEVICES SOCIETY OVERALL STRUCTURE AND ACTIVITIES Hiroshi Iwai Jr. Past President of EDS 03/06.

EDS Membership Fee Subsidy Program

• IEEE policy currently allows a 50% discount on IEEE dues and one society membership and its optional publications for any individual whose annual salary is less than US$11,600. This offering is referred to as the Minimum Income Special Considerations Option. IEEE also allows a 50% discount on IEEE dues and society dues and publications for members who are unemployed through involuntary termination. This offering is referred to as the Unemployed Special Considerations.

• The Electron Devices Society now has a new program for its chapters called the Membership Fee Subsidy Program (MFSP), which will both complement the IEEE Minimum Income and Unemployed offerings and provide a significant additional benefit for qualified individuals.

Page 45: IEEE ELECTRON DEVICES SOCIETY OVERALL STRUCTURE AND ACTIVITIES Hiroshi Iwai Jr. Past President of EDS 03/06.

EDS Membership Fee Subsidy Program

• With the EDS Membership Fee Subsidy Program, EDS will pay 50% of the IEEE and EDS dues for any new member or new student applicant qualifying for the Minimum Income option. EDS will cover up to twelve (12) chapter members/students per year. The individuals can be applying for either regular membership or student membership. This program is also available to all unemployed members. Although the IEEE Minimum Income option allows individuals to purchase publication subscriptions for one-society at a 50% reduced rate, the EDS MFSP does not cover the payment of publication subscriptions.  In addition, MFSP is not available to current IEEE members or students renewing their IEEE and EDS memberships.

• If a chapter has individuals who qualify for the reduced IEEE Minimum Income offering and the EDS MFSP, all the Chapter Chair needs to do is obtain the IEEE/EDS membership application forms from all individuals participating in the program (maximum 12) and submit them to Laura Riello of the EDS Executive Office, for processing. Once received, the application forms will be coded with a special account number and submitted to the pertinent IEEE department for processing.

EDS accomplishments for the past 2 years

1. Service to members

a. Preserve EDS archive and present to members with cheap price

DVD: T-ED, EDL, IEDM, Newsletters

b. Offer many mini-colloquia and distinguish lectures by increasing number of distinguished lectures

c. Increase T-cosponsorship meetings

Page 47: IEEE ELECTRON DEVICES SOCIETY OVERALL STRUCTURE AND ACTIVITIES Hiroshi Iwai Jr. Past President of EDS 03/06.

2. Recognition for the change in the reason to be IEEE EDS member and Establishment of new concept for future EDS member community

Past: Subscription of IEEE EDS journals Information of IEEE EDS conferences

Now: No strong reasons, Maybe to belong to prestigious international professional community

a. Reasons to be an EDS member

Page 48: IEEE ELECTRON DEVICES SOCIETY OVERALL STRUCTURE AND ACTIVITIES Hiroshi Iwai Jr. Past President of EDS 03/06.

b. What is value of EDS and what is the EDS community from now?

EDS Value now: Provide the world top level conferences and journals to world people who are related to EDOffering a chance to publish papers and makerecognize their technological accomplishments

Offering a chance to get the leading edge andnewest information for ED technologies

EDS community and members from now

Those who attend EDS conferences and publishPapers in EDS journals

Page 49: IEEE ELECTRON DEVICES SOCIETY OVERALL STRUCTURE AND ACTIVITIES Hiroshi Iwai Jr. Past President of EDS 03/06.

3. Promotion of EDS activities

a. Increase in the number of chapters to cover

unreached areas and re-activation of chaptersEspecially in China, India, Brazil, Mexico,as well as US and Europe by visiting of EDS delegation and partners

b. Globalization

Establishment of chapter chairs meeting At least every 2 years in each SRC region

NAE, NAW, LA, EAM, APEstablishment of AdCom meeting in every 2 yearsIn EAM and AP Global distribution for committee membersis still on the way

Page 50: IEEE ELECTRON DEVICES SOCIETY OVERALL STRUCTURE AND ACTIVITIES Hiroshi Iwai Jr. Past President of EDS 03/06.

c. Educational and student activitiesIncrease in mini-colloquium, DLsIncrease in student chaptersEstablishment of EDS GRADUATE STUDENT FELLOWSHIP

d. New technical areaParticipation to Organic electronics, andNano-eletronics

e. Industry relationNot sufficient, there are huge potential members from industry

Page 51: IEEE ELECTRON DEVICES SOCIETY OVERALL STRUCTURE AND ACTIVITIES Hiroshi Iwai Jr. Past President of EDS 03/06.

f. Decrease in the number of membership: due to high membership fee and change of EDS value for members

New strategy: change in the EDS member community Increase Affiliate is another way

Page 52: IEEE ELECTRON DEVICES SOCIETY OVERALL STRUCTURE AND ACTIVITIES Hiroshi Iwai Jr. Past President of EDS 03/06.

Suggestion for future EDS initiative

1. Preservation of archive for the proceedings of

EDS sponsored, co- sponsored, T-sponsored conferences/workshops

Should be a long year project

Most of new ideas and findings are presentedfirst time at conferences/workshops rather than journalsSome of the archives for the conferences/

workshops are going to disappear

It is EDS responsibility to preserve them

Future strategy is necessary and time to make it

2. Membership promotion

Make join the following people

Person to attend EDS conferencesPerson to publish papers at EDS conferencesPerson to publish papers in EDS journals

Increase conference registration fee difference Between members/non-members

Page charge for journal paper for non-members?

High IEEE membership fee:

Increase the number of EDS affiliate

Current Biggest Problems for EDS for R10 Too high IEEE Membership fee!!: 124 USD:

More than one month salary of Chinese! (EDS fee is only 10 USD)Hope to reduce the membership fee in relation to the average salary for each country, and pay the registration fee by each country currency, espacially in China and India

Every subscription like IEEE Spectrum couldbe electronic to save the cost.

Go to the moon for IEEE is to reduce the fee.
