Overview of Project In February 2003, Society presidents endorsed a

research project that would, for the first time, survey all IEEE Societies. This project was named, “IEEE All Society Research Project.”

The project was coordinated by Elena Gerstmann, Director, IEEE Research.

Each Society appointed a point of contact (poc) to work on this project.

The Socpoc team, via email, oversaw the processes. This team included one person from each Society, a staff member from RAD, a staff member from TAD, and the two-person IEEE Research staff.

Page 4: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2003 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by

Goals The goals of this project were to provide each

Society with membership information in order to: Plan for the future Measure membership satisfaction with each Society

and IEEE Develop strategies for membership growth & retention Assess the value and importance of existing programs

and services (publications, conferences, websites, etc.) and of membership, in general

Highlight “hot” content areas Determine membership demographics (employment

status, industry, years of professional experience, etc.)

Page 5: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2003 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by

Methodology - Questionnaire Questionnaire development

The Socpoc team came to a consensus on the format and wording of a template questionnaire.

This template questionnaire provided a framework for each Society’s questionnaire.

The template contained both standard questions that were the same for all Societies and questions that could be customized by each Society.

Each Society representative customized the questionnaire for his or her Society.

Page 6: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2003 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by

Methodology – Sample Sample

The population of members that could have been selected for participation were Higher grade Society members (Associates, Fellows, Members, Senior Members; no Life members or Students) with an email address on file (approximately 88% of IEEE members have an email address on file)

1,200 members were randomly selected per Society A sampling plan was developed that assured that each

member would only receive one questionnaire regardless of how many Society memberships she or he holds.

Comparisons between the randomly drawn sample and the Society populations were made to ensure representative samples

Page 7: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2003 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by

Methodology – Data Collection Data collection began in early June 2003

1) Society Presidents had an option of sending an email message to the sample informing them of the survey

2) Elena Gerstmann, Director, IEEE Research, sent an email invitation to each sample explaining the project along with the URL to the Society’s web survey

3) Approximately 14 days after the initial email message was sent, a reminder email was sent. This message thanked those who had already completed the survey and encouraged those who hadn’t completed it to do so.

An additional sample of 1,800 IEEE non-Society members received a similar survey

Page 8: IEEE All Society Research Project: 2003 IEEE Education Society Research coordinated by

Response Rate for IEEE Education Society

A total of 436 IEEE Education Society members responded to the questionnaire

Estimating that 1,100 email invitations were delivered, the response rate was 40%

Assuming these responses constitute a representative sample because the sample was randomly drawn and was representative of the population of IEEE Education Society members with email addresses

the margin-of-error is within ±4.3% with a 95% degree of confidence
