IDST 4340 Event Proposal
Proposed idea-‐ Obstacle course/tuff mudder type event
• 6 giant obstacles o Behind the Oaks o Register as teams o Possibly open to community/maybe just campus wide
Each obstacle would be related to a global issue or pandemic around the world (clean water, child slavery, sex slavery, etc.)
Support from SU Health and Wellness and Campus Rec would
Global Issues is involved-‐ in the research of the obstacles and the decision making process of which global issues will be represented in the course.
This event would involve quite a bit of research into the issues going to be in the spotlight, if we are going to present these to the campus/community we need to be doing them justice. Although this would be presenting them in a light hearted way, we need it to also leave an impact on those of us building the event but also those that attend.
Class objectives involved-‐
• Understand the range of problems facing communities both near and far
• Understand the inter-‐relationship of community problems on a global scale
• Work cooperatively, using sound critical thinking skills and cultural awareness, to propose solutions to at least one problem
• Clearly present potential solutions to appropriate groups
Why should this be held?-‐
This event should be held not only to bring awareness to less publicly talked about global issues, but also to let the staff and student body see what could be done to make even the tiniest Impact in the solutions to these on local/state/national/global levels. It would also allow the IDST students that will be graduating this December or May put all of the things they have learned over the last 4 years through freshman studies, critical thinking, creative experience, and global issues together for one last all-‐encompassing project.
*It is an understood that safety of the participants would be of concern and we are looking into specifics on liability, and will be more concrete with that once obstacles have been decided on and planned out.*
