Usually Thanks comes in the end, but those who were at the phd day experienced that I was not able to finish my presentation as I ger too emotional so I want to be sure that I finish at least the most important thing. Thanks that I can be department head at idi, I am extremely proud of itThanks to the new idi employees now I would like to have all people who started after our last seminar in re to stand up and see her name Thanks to our new colleagues from Gjvik and Kalvskinne you inspire me and I am so glad and proud that it happened to me to work with such interesting issuesThanks to IDIs stab, to IDIs professors, phd students, and researchers 3

Thanks Thanks to all of who who started at IDI after August 2013. You are the best ones! Thanks to our students and PhD students Thanks to Monica Storvik, Nils Kalstad Svendsen, Mariusz Nowostawski, Geir Ove Rosvold Thanks to IDIs administrative and technical stabI love you all

When IDI was asked by our dean to produce a statement about how we wish to be organized in the new NTNU, three wise men were called to help me and IDI into the future. 9

You may have noticed that the title of this presentation is not something that i have developed my self. We are not an isolated island but we are and must always try to be a part of a bigger community. 10

good student satisfaction The two degree programs that recruits directly from high school (BIT and MTDT) are both very popularwith respect to applicants, have high uptake bordersand good student satisfaction (from 4.4 to 4.5 out of 5 possiblepoints on Overall impression on NOKUTStudy Barometer )

Research and teaching activitiesIDI covers most of the discipline internationally known Computing, ref. ACM / IEEE its report "Computing curricula 2005"1) Computer Engineering, 2) Computer Science, 3) Information Systems, 4) Information Technology and 5) Software Engineering. Knowledge areas (Table 3.1, p.24 of the report) telecommunication, cybernetics

#

networking and communications, automation / robotics, digital technology, and numerics IDI has no study, direction or main profile that matches the program "Information Technology" in ACM report. Information Technology as described there goes more towards technical operation of computer systems, support, etc., adding generally more emphasis on the application and hands-on skills and less emphasis on theory than is common in university studies. Some three-year engineering programs will probably to a greater extent match skills profile that this direction

organization of Level 4 at IDI

"Compute/Computing: solution of problems where the computational complexity is the biggest challenge. This grouping would roughly encompass CARD + AHG as mentioned above."Data": solution of problems where storage, search and analysis of large amounts of data is the biggest challenge. This grouping will broadly include AI + DIF above."Software": the solution of problems where the central issue is the complexity of the software developed (architecture, design), as well as the users and the organization's needs and / or project organization (product to be produced is large, there are many people to coordinate the development team). This grouping would roughly encompass SU + IS as mentioned above.

#

By research evaluations of this type can be advantageous to have small groups that are focused in its thematic under terms that are internationally recognizable (since one otherwise easily get criticism that the research lacks focus). By cooperation on education is however advisable to have larger and more robust professional groups. In order to have more robustness, we propose the following groups at IDI:

NFR evaluation of ICT Computers (CARD), Algorithms, HPC and Graphics (AHG), Intelligent Systems (AI), Data and Information Management (DIF), Software Engineering (SU) and Information Systems (ICE).

15

starting 1.1.2017The idea behind the proposal is to create an organization of IDI scientific fields that are general enough to encompass most of the subjects in the department. Some employees may academically belong to several groups, but they can select the group that best meets their primary fields.By having few but large groups, benefits of having robust groups that can tolerate that employees are not present in periods, for example. by sabbatical or maternity. Meanwhile, it provides a level of management with a number of group leaders who can easily meet.

#

StabEach group then becomes big enough that it can be linked to some dedicated years of work with technical / administrative support. For some support functions user proximity is very important. For technical support, this is particularly relevant software and hardware laboratories for research and teaching purposes. Focus on sophisticated equipment and software. For administrative support, we aim at proximity to students and teachers. This will provide a much higher level of service than the support function that is provided in a centralized way
