Gifted & Talented Students:

Who are they?

SC definition:

“Gifted and talented students are

those who are identified in grades

one through twelve as demonstrating

high performance ability or potential

in academic and/or artistic areas

and therefore require an educational

program beyond that potential.”

Gifted & Talented Students: Who are they?

Children & youth with outstanding talent:

Perform or show the potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment.

Exhibit high performance capability in intellectual, creative, and/or artistic areas, possess an unusual leadership capacity, or excel in specific academic fields.

Require services or activities not ordinarily provided by the schools.

Are found in all cultural groups, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor.

Characteristics of Artistically Gifted & Talented Students:

Shows interest in a particular art

form-visual arts, music, and/or

theatre.

Spends much time pursuing an art

form.

Demonstrates good fine motor skills.

Has a good memory or an unusual

ability to remember.

Characteristics of Artistically Gifted & Talented Students:

Shows commitment and follow through to

reach goals.

Can express feelings through the arts.

Demonstrates keen observation, seeing

what others overlook.

Creates unique responses to stimuli or can

extend or elaborate on ideas of others,

often benefitting from an intense study

within a particular art area.

Identification Purpose

According to the State Board of

Education Regulation 43-220, the

purpose of identification includes:

Finding students who display talent

beyond that of their peers in one or

more arts areas (i.e. dance, music,

theatre, and visual arts).

Identifying Gifted and Talented Students

When identifying gifted and talented students, there must be a system in place that operates in the following manner:

Seeks variety

Utilizes assessment measures

Eliminates bias

Identifies potential

Assesses motivation

“Gifted and talented students may

be found within any racial, ethnic,

or socioeconomic group; within

any nationality; within both

genders; and within populations

with physical disabilities, learning

disabilities, or behavioral

problems.”

Referral: Request for Screening

Who can be referred? Students currently in grades 3-11 identified as

being potentially gifted in visual arts, music, or theatre may be referred.

Who can do the referring? Students may be referred for screening by

themselves, a parent/guardian, teacher(s) in the fine arts, teacher(s) in the core subject area(s), a physical education teacher, an administrator, or a peer who is knowledgeable of the referring student’s talent.

Request for Screening/Referral Form

Will be sent home with Report Cards for ALL students in grades 3-11 on November 2, 2017.

Forms due no later than December 1, 2017.

Students who qualified for REACH within the

past 2 years do not audition unless interested

in a different art area. However, ALL students must inform us of intent to participate. Slots will

not be held.

Recommendation: Initial Screening

Completed at the school level-November 6th-December 19th (or once referrals begin to be received).

Students meeting specified criteria are recommended for Final Screening (District Audition).

Students not meeting criteria may submit a Request for Screening/Referral Form the following year if they wish to be rescreened.

Demonstration: Final Screening

District Auditions –

To be held Saturday, February 10,

2018 at Crestwood High School.

Specified times for students are listed

on the Audition Schedule.

Auditions include a demonstration

and interview component.

Music (Chorus) Nominees

All Music nominees must prepare a piece to perform (by memory, if possible).

Students may sing with or without accompaniment.

A piano and accompanist will be available at the audition.

Students may be asked to perform other musical tasks at the audition to help determine eligibility.

Visual Arts Nominees All Visual Arts nominees must prepare a

portfolio of at least 4 examples of their best work, preferably in a variety of media

and styles prior to Final Screening.

Students not presenting portfolio material may not be considered.

Students will be asked questions about

their work and their interest in art.

Students will be asked to create original

artwork in the presence of an

evaluator.

Theatre Nominees

Students must prepare a dramatized skit, monologue, poem, or similar piece –

preferably memorized. (This piece can be

original.)

Students may use props or costumes when

auditioning.

Students may perform a skit with a

partner who may also be auditioning.

Students should be prepared to perform

additional theatrical tasks if asked.

Crestwood High School this year.
