RECENT PROJECTS FROM ICSA VOLUNTEERING AT ASSUMPTION SOUP KITCHEN

On the 30th of November, the Interactors of SMK (P) Sri Aman went to volunteer at Assumption Family House, a soup kitchen located behind Assunta Hospital in PJ State, which feeds the less fortunate. Although we didn’t cook the food, we packaged it, cleaned up and some of us helped distribute it to the people. Volunteering at the soup kitchen taught us how fortunate we are, as the things we complain about are nothing compared to the problems of others. Plus, the people in the soup kitchen were really nice and we learned a lot of new things, it’s something everyone should do at least once. It was a great experience and definitely not our last time there.

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS AWARENESS MONTHICSA interactors participated in Political Correctness Awareness month by spreading awareness online through social media mediums such as Facebook, Twitter and blogs.

Every year for the District Interact Conference, the biggest number of participants comes from the Interact Coordinating Committee of Petaling Jaya. This year, although half the amount compared to the year before, was no different. This year’s conference was held at Nur Laman Bestari Eco Resort, Ulu Yam from the 12th – 14th December. It was not what many expected – in terms of the environment, facilities and many other things. Usually, no outdoor activities would be organised as it would defeat the purpose of it being a conference. However, at Ulu Yam, outdoor activities were held on the second day, much to everybody’s lack of enthusiasm. From what I have already said, many would think that the conference was a bad experience and one not worth remembering. There was no denying that we, participants from ICCPJ, were unhappy about a lot of things throughout the conference, but like the family ICCPJ is, we had each others’ backs and made it through. We didn’t just learn from the numerous talks. We learnt things that nobody there taught us – we learnt from experience. We learnt how to adapt ourselves to new environments. We learnt how to handle difficult situations. We learnt how to be mature about what others think and say about us. We learnt the importance of participation. We learnt how to give without expecting anything in return. And most importantly, we learnt what family among interactors feels like. ICCPJ is family.

Registration starts at 9am-10.30am, and there are three categories which are modern dance, traditional dance and singing. Only students in Form 1-5 from the six ICCPJ schools are allowed to audition. Dozens of young men and women have been detained for being "punk" and disturbing the peace in Aceh, Indonesia's most devoutly Muslim province. They are being held in a remedial school, where they are undergoing "re-education". Rights groups have expressed concern after photographs emerged of the young men having their mohawks and funky hairstyles shaved off by Aceh's police.

They look sullen and frightened as they are forced into a communal bath.

But Aceh's police say they are not trying to harm the youths, they are trying to protect them. The 64 punks, many of whom are from as far away as Bali or Jakarta, were picked up on Saturday night during a local concert. Aceh police spokesman Gustav Leo says there have been complaints from residents nearby. The residents did not like the behaviour of the punks and alleged that some of them had approached locals for money.

Morals unmatched, Mr Leo stressed that no-one had been charged with any crime, and there were no plans to do so. They have now been taken to a remedial school in the Seulawah Hills, about 60km (37 miles) away from the provincial capital Banda Aceh.

"They will undergo a re-education so their morals will match those of other Acehnese people," says Mr Leo.

But activists say the manner in which the young people have been treated is humiliating and a violation of human rights. Aceh Human Rights Coalition chief Evi Narti Zain says the police should not have taken such harsh steps, accusing them of treating children like criminals.

"They are just children, teenagers, expressing themselves," she says.

"Of course there are Acehnese people who complained about them - but regardless of that, this case shouldn't have been handled like this. They were doused with cold water, and their heads were shaved - this is a human rights violation. Their dignity was abused."

But Mr Leo disagrees.

It is the second time the police have cracked down on punk culture in Aceh.

"We didn't arrest them, they haven't committed any criminal offence," he says.

"They are Aceh's own children - we are doing this for their own good. Their future could be at risk. We are re-educating them so they don't shame their parents."

This is the second time Aceh's police have clamped down on punks in the province, which is the only province in Indonesia allowed to implement shariah law. There is a thriving underground punk music scene in Aceh, but many punk-lovers are viewed suspiciously by local residents. Many of the young teens sport outrageous hairstyles, in keeping with punk culture, but against the norms of the keenly religious in Aceh. Aceh is one of the most devout Muslim provinces in Indonesia, and observers say it has becoming increasingly more conservative since Islamic law was implemented a few years ago.

“I’ll study later.” “I’ll study after five minutes online...” “I still have a year left, I should relax first...” Don't procrastinate! Prioritize activities based on importance and never leave something, especially studying to the last minute. Making a schedule helps, and if this is a challenge, try making an account on http://getrevising.co.uk/ . Although they don’t have SPM or PMR, you can put your exam level as “GCSE level” since it doesn’t affect your actual timetable. The website asks which subjects you’d rather spend more time on, which you think you can manage to cope with without extra study time, when you’re free to study, and then it does the rest for you.

HOW TO STUDY EFFECTIVELY1. MANAGE YOUR TIME.

Find a place where you’re comfortable to study in- not noisy, but not so comfortable that you risk falling asleep (your bed is not a good place). Make sure you have enough light and all the supplies you need (pencils, highlighters, etc) so you don’t have to keep getting up to take things.

2. FIND A GOOD STUDY SPOT.

Make up songs out of information- sounds stupid, but it works and no one will hear it other than you (unless you tell people about it), or make sentences out of things so you remember them faster, such as E, G, B, D, F = Every Good Boy Deserves Friends. Also, when taking notes in class, don’t bother to make them look neat or pretty, just write them so that you understand them and then re-write them at home. Make flashcards or short notes if writing helps you to memorize things better.

3. USE STUDY TACTICS.

With school, extra activities, friends, family and other priorities on your mind, sleep is probably the last thing you need to “waste time” doing, right? Wrong. Sleep helps the brain function better and retain information more efficiently. Staying up all night studying might seem like a brilliant idea before an exam, but in reality, the lack of sleep will limit your thinking skills and you most likely won’t remember half of the things you studied the night before. So start studying early, and always try and get at last 6-8 hours of sleep before school or an exam.

4. GET ENOUGH SLEEP.

If you’ve got a lot on your mind take a moment to write yourself some notes in a diary or on a piece of paper about what you're thinking about before you start studying. This will help to clear your mind you focus all your thoughts on your work instead of other things.

Muse’s Chris Wolstenholme has said that the band want to do something “radically different” on their next album, which will be their sixth album, and the follow-up to their 2009 record, The Resistance. Their manager Anthony Addis revealed they have already started recording and that he expected it to be released by October 2012.

Reunited and ready to go, The Killers began work on their fourth studio album, tentatively titled Battle Born, in May 2011 at their Las Vegas studio. In a Q Magazine interview taken in June, it was stated that album would have ‘great stories told through real rock music’. They have also said that the album will make heavier use of guitars than their past record, Day and Age, so this is definitely one to watch out for!

In June 2011, Chester Bennington revealed that Linkin Park had begun working on their next album and has stated he would be shocked if it wasn’t released in 2012. For many of us, Linkin Park was the rock band of our childhoods in the early 2000s. What to expect? Rather than the more personal songs of Meteora, Chester has said that the album will address more controversial topics. This is definitely one to look forward to.

Paramore have released several new songs already in 2011, such as their newest single “Hello, Cold World” and it looks like we can expect a full album in 2012. This will be their first album since the controversial departure of the Farro brothers, guitarist Josh & drummer Zac, and fans are anxiously waiting to see how their absence will affect Paramore’s music.

Although this is just an assumption, East Bay punk legends Green Day have been up to their secret show shenanigans over the past few months and have been busting out plenty of new songs at these gigs. It’s probably a pretty safe to assume that we’ll be hearing at least something from the men who brought us American Idiot.

From mint green to pale yellow, pastels graced the runways with a color for every skin tone. The palest pastels floated down the runways at Richard Nicholl while Felder Felder went slightly bolder. Meadham Kirchhoff, Christopher Kane, Antipodium and Roksanda Ilincic were also among designers whose collections were peppered with pastel colors.

Forget the skintight pencil skirts, full skirts are back in style. Floaty florals at Acne; a swinging hem at Daks; an organic puffball at Peter Pilotto; Jonathan Saunders' slouchy and sloppy; a paper bag silhouette by Roksanda Ilincic; swishy, curvy skirts grace the runway this season.

Simple silhouettes in bold prints adorned the runways at Burberry Prorsum, Ikat prints and shell beaded handbags at Matthew Williamson and yellow and black at Holly Fulton. Printed on everything from bags to shoes to dresses, but the best thing about tribal prints? They’re available everywhere. From Pasar Seni to high-street stores like Forever 21, tribal prints are everywhere- affordable, mesmerizing, and right on trend. What more could you want?

5. KnitwearThin knits have become a British summer staple. Clements Ribeiro, Jonathan Saunders, Margaret Howell, Pringle, Meadham Kirkhhoff, Mulberry and JW Anderson all featured knits in their collections. Too hot for Malaysian weather? Not at all. Summer knits are much more hot-weather-friendly compared to the thick Christmas sweaters that come into mind when we think of knitting- opt for a thin knit, and you’ll be lounging in cosy but not too-warm sweaters in no time.

1. Scrunch up your tank topFor a spiral shape, pinch your shirt at the center and twist all the way around. For random color bursts, simply bunch the shirt up in random twists!

Fasten four rubber bands across the diameter in a star shape. Don't worry if it's not perfect; you just need the shirt to be wrapped tightly.

2. Tie it together

Now, paint the tank top with one whole color, or paint different sections of the tee with different colors (we used purple, blue, and wine). Make sure the color covers almost the whole tank, there’ll be plenty of white space in the middle of the tank where it isn’t wrapped.

3. Add the color!

After waiting five to 10 minutes, remove the rubber bands to reveal your tie-dye masterpiece! Leave to dry overnight to let the color set.
