L’AQUILA AND THE ATERNO RIVER VALLEY

This technical visit will allow to explore the town of L’Aquila and the neighbouring areas of the Aterno river valley, that were both devastated by a Mw 6.1 earthquake on April 6, 2009. Visitors will have the opportunity to observe the status of the reconstruction 10 years after the 2009 earthquake, which caused huge damage to public and private buildings as well as to the cultural heritage. TECHNICAL VISIT

A technical site visit will be arranged to the areas hit by the 2016 – 2017 seismic sequence in the central Apennines, one of the most seismically active areas in Italy. The technical visit will focus first on the Amatrice village, that during the August 24th 2016 event, suffered cumulative effects of damage patterns that led to the complete destruction of its historical centre. A technical team will drive visits into the Red Zone. After lunch, a visit will be organi-sed to the village of Norcia, which has a long seismic history. Norcia did not suffer extensive damage during the seismic sequence thanks to effective retrofitting measures carried out after the 1997 earthquake.

AMATRICE AND NORCIA VILLAGES

The following Technical Visits are meant to introduce a number of Italian sites related to earthquake geotechnical engineering. All participants can apply to this complementary program that will take place before and/or after the Conference.Applications will be dealt with on a first-come first-serve basis.

ROMA METRO LINE C

A technical visit will be organised to the underground construction sites of the new Metro Line C that underpass the historical centre of Rome. SEISMIC HAZARD IN ITALY

CONFERENCE FORMAT

The four-day conference will consist of plenary, parallel and poster sessions presenting both invited and submitted papers, in conjunction with Keynote and Theme Lectures presented by leading international experts.

The plenary sessions will include the 7th Ishihara Lecture, an award lecture created by TC203 to honour the life contribution of Professor Kenji Ishihara in the field of Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering. Workshops on specific topics and round table discussions are also programmed. Pre-and/or post-conference technical visits are also planned, including construction sites and areas affected by most recent earthquakes in Italy.

GALA DINNER AT TERRAZZA CAFFARELLIAdmiring the Capital City from one of the most fascinating viewpoints and getting lost amid the timid rooftops of the houses located in the heart of the Eternal City. The Terrace, very close to conference venue, is a magnificent and exclusive location, with outdoor spaces. It offers visitors from all over the world the opportunity to live unique moments and experience quality food and passion for art in an exclusive location, feeling like the custodians of timeless memories.

Wednesday, 19 June 2019 Not included in the Conference registration fee. Gala dinner can be booked during registration as a supplementary option.

VII International Conference on Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering

Roma (Italy), 17-20 June 2019

ANGELICUM CONGRESS CENTER

The Angelicum Conference Centre, with its two auditoriums and eleven smaller meeting rooms, encapsulates the original cloister, with the garden and the fountain, in the heart of Angelicum site. Richly steeped in history, the Angelicum has received Popes, heads of state and many of the most powerful and important figures of the last three centuries. A truly histori-cal Roman edifice, the building exhibits the priceless markings of some of the greatest masters of the later Renaissance, such as Giacomo della Porta, Vincenzo della Greca and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, whose classic works can also be seen in Piazza Navona, Piazza Barberini and at the foot of the Spanish Steps.

CONFERENCE TOPICS

As in the previous editions, the conference will address the most recent research and practice developments in earthquake geotechnical engineering, stimulating fruitful scientific and technical interaction with the fields of seismology, geophysics, geology, structural and infrastructural engineering. The session themes will include, however are not limited, to the following topics:

1 Seismic hazard, ground motion records and prediction2 Surface fault rupture and near-fault effects3 Dynamic field and laboratory testing on soils and rocks 4 Dynamic physical modelling, shaking table and centrifuge tests5 Seismic site characterization6 Constitutive and numerical models for dynamic analyses7 Seismic response analysis, site amplification and microzonation8 Liquefaction, lateral spreading and their impacts9 Stability of natural slopes, cavities and mining digs10 Embankments, levees and dams 11 Landfills and waste repositories12 Ground improvement and reinforced soil structures and

geosynthetics13 Waterfront and offshore structures 14 Earth-retaining structures15 Tunnels and underground structures16 Lifeline earthquake engineering17 Shallow and deep foundations18 Soil-foundation-structure interaction19 Case histories and instrumented test sites20 Seismic safety of monuments and historical sites21 Lessons learned from recent and past earthquakes22 Developments in performance-based design, codes and standards

of practice23 Metamaterials and other innovative technologies for seismic

protection24 Emergency, urban systems and resilient communities25 Risk management and insurance issues26 Multi-hazards, tsunamis and induced earthquakes27 Education and preparedness

The seismic history of the Italian territory highlights awful losses in terms of casualties and huge social and economical costs. In summary, since 1000 A.D. 220 events occurred with epicentral MCS intensity ≥ VIII. In the last 50 years, earthquakes with magnitude between 5.5 and 6.9 caused monetary losses for over € 150 billion. Even considering the present situation of the building stock and the possible occurrence of future earthqua-kes according to the rate of earthquakes in the past centuries, expected costs are of the order of € 2-3 billion per year and are then in line with the expenses of the last 50 years.
