Ice Pigging for wastewater pipes

Wastewater pipes often become fouled causing blockages, smells and poor flows. Ice Pigging can be applied to pumped sewers to remove fouling, sediments, gravel and other material found to be causing problems in pumped sewers.

A semi-solid ice slurry can be applied uniquely because it is both pumpable like a liquid, but also takes on properties of a solid when a ‘pig’ of ice slurry is formed within a pipe. It is a highly effective method of removing sediment and other materials from wastewater pipelines and is a unique solution for pumped sewers.

Ice Pigging is a patented process for cleaning the inside of pipes using an ice slurry. It is fast, effective and exceptionally low-risk.

FATTY DEPOSIT FROM PIPEWALL

Exceptionally low-risk – if the ice ever gets stuck, it will simply melt.

Ice flows through all diameters, fittings and bends of pipes.

Takes half the time that is normally required by other techniques.

Generally requires no excavation: a genuine ‘no-dig’ technique.

Reduces energy costs from pumping efficiencies.

Less stress on the pipework due to pumps working at design specification.

Reduces risk of sewage flooding into environment or properties close-by.

How does it work?

Step 1: Wet well levels are managed on site to prepare for planned interruption and Ice Pigging intervention. An ice delivery unit will pump ice through either the non-return valve located at the pumping station, or via any fitting on the pipe to form a pig of ice in the pumped sewer.

Step 2: Once the ice has been inserted, the wet well pump can be used to push the ice pig through the full length of the pipe to be cleaned. If the wet well pump is insufficiently rated, an external pump and water supply can be used.

Step 3: At the collection outlet, the dirty ice and waste material is discharged into a sewer if receiving treatment works is in agreement. The dirty ice can also be collected with a suction waste tanker.

Step 4: The pipe is returned to full automatic service.

Site Operation A site safety brief is carried out and the Ice Pigging equipment will then be positioned and connected to pre-determined insertion points.

Why clean pipes?

Over time, materials present in sewage can cause decreased flow rates and in more severe cases, could result in flooding of wet wells and discharge of sewage into the environment or properties close by.

Ice Pigging is proven to effectively remove debris without causing damage to the pipe wall.

When to consider Ice Pigging for pumped sewers…

4

Poor hydraulic performance

Odour complaints and H2S build-up

Air locks that cause poor pumping

Blockages within the pipe

Inadequate pumping which can lead to: - Wet well flooding - Higher pumping costs

Ice Pigging versus...…Foam SwabbingFoam swabbing presents more risk of the swab becoming stuck. With Ice Pigging, this risk is negligible. Ice Pigging generally requires no excavation and is much less disruptive with pipe outage of a few hours and carried out with minimum risk.

…JettingWith Ice Pigging, long sections of pipe often greater than 1 kilometre, can be cleaned in one operation which can remove the need to break the pipe into sections which would be required for jetting. Jetting of pumped sewers is generally not possible due to the lack of access points along the length of the pipe.

Our ServiceWe produce ice in our local ice factories and deliver to site using specially designed ice tanks. Ice loads of up to 35,000 litres are possible. All Ice Pigging operations are carefully monitored by our specialist engineers.
