The manna that has sustained them in the desert ends; from now on they will eat of the produce of the land. Our Eucharist--the manna of our jour- ney--will end when we enter heaven. Paul, in the second reading, speaks of change. The old order has passed away: all is new. Reconciliation has been secured in Christ. The message has to be proclaimed everywhere by the ambassadors for Christ. The beautiful parable of the prodigal son is given to us by Christ in answer to the criticism of the Pharisees, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." Jesus tells the story not to il- lustrate some vague human ideal of being broadminded or tolerant. He wants us to identify the father with God--a God who reaches out across rules, regulations, and even common sense to embrace and to forgive. Cop- yright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. PASSAGES The point of today's first reading is ful-fillment. The forty-year trek of the Isra-elites is over; they now camp in the Promised Land and celebrate the Pass-over. The manna that has sustained them in the desert ends; from now on they will eat of the produce of the land. Our Eucharist--the manna of our jour-ney--will end when we enter heaven. Paul, in the second reading, speaks of change. The old order has passed away: all is new. Reconciliation has been secured in Christ. The message has to be proclaimed everywhere by the ambassadors for Christ. The beautiful parable of the prodigal son is given to us by Christ in answer to the criticism of the Pharisees, "This

man welcomes sinners and eats with them." Jesus tells the story not to il-lustrate some vague human ideal of being broadminded or tolerant. He wants us to identify the father with God--a God who reaches out across rules, regulations, and even common sense to embrace and to forgive. Cop-yright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today, "Laetare Sunday," breaks the somberness of Lent for a little rejoicing, and the readings all summon us to an awareness of reconcili-ation. One of the best-loved stories of our tradition is today's Gospel story of the runaway son and the prodigal father. Prodigal, of course, is an adjective meaning "spendthrift or extravagant to a degree bordering on recklessness," and although the boy maxes out the credit cards, it is really the father who is prodigal with forgiveness. Part of the excitement of this Laetare Sunday is rooted in the ancient catechumenate. Long ago, midway through Lent, the "elect" were fo-cusing more and more on the gift of reconciliation accomplished for them by Christ and about to be realized in the Easter sacraments they were preparing to celebrate. In some places, the elect were even be-decked with roses on this day. A person bedecked with roses sticks out in a crowd; a person formed by the Eucharist and committed to living a life of reconciliation does, too. That's you! --James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Prayer for the Election of a New Pope O God, eternal shepherd, who govern your flock with unfailing care, grant in your boundless fatherly love a pastor for your Church who will please you by his holiness and to us show watchful care. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE CONCLAVE Conclave = con clave (Latin: with a key; referring to the former practice of "locking in" of the cardinals for the secret election; now, to the strict secre-cy governing the procedure). After Mass in Saint Peter's seeking the Holy Spirit's guidance, the cardinals move in procession to the Sistine Chapel where they swear an oath to uphold the con-clave's norms and secrecy. When those

not voting have left, a preacher bids the cardinals undertake their weighty task having God alone before their eyes, an exhortation that Michelangelo's Last Judgment silently reinforces. If the election begins the first afternoon, one ballot is held; after that, two ballots each morn-ing and afternoon until one candidate receives at least two-thirds of the vote. Before each cardinal deposits his ballot in a chalice-like urn, he proclaims: "I call as my witness Christ the Lord who will be my judge, that my vote is given to the one who before God I think should be elected." Three cardinals chosen by lot tally the votes; three others double-check. If both morning ballots are inconclusive, the ballots are burned in a stove whose chimney provides those gathered in Saint Peter's Square and watching worldwide with a signal of black smoke indicating no election; likewise after two inconclusive afternoon bal-lots. When a candidate does receive two-thirds, he is asked if he ac-cepts and which papal name he chooses. White smoke signals the elec-tion to the outside world, while the new pope changes into "papal whites" to receive pledges of obedience from the electors. From Saint Peter's central balcony, a senior Cardinal announces the new pope's identity and papal name. Finally, the new pope presents himself to greet the faithful and confer his first blessing. -- Peter Scagnelli, copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

SEDE VACANTE On Thursday, February 28, at 8:00 PM Rome-time, as the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI quietly ended, the period called Sede Vacante began, literally, “the Chair (of Saint Peter) being vacant,” formally, the Vacancy of the Apostolic See. As graphic symbolization, the papal

tiara on the Vatican crest is replaced by an open um-brella over the keys of Saint Peter. This “logo” then appears on the Vatican’s website and newspaper, all formal documents, and specially-issued coins and stamps. The authority of the cardinals and archbish-ops who direct the Church’s central administration ceases, and the work is suspended. Ordinary business and routine matters that cannot be postponed until the new pope’s election are entrusted to the College of

Cardinals meeting daily as a full body, called a General Congregation, coordinated by the Cardinal Camerlengo (Chamberlain), assisted by three cardinals in a rotation that changes every three days. The first order of business is a review of the norms governing the conclave and oaths of fidelity to these and secrecy regarding deliberations. Two clerics present meditations to the cardinals on current problems facing the Church and the need for careful discernment in choosing the new pope. Pre-conclave “housekeeping” is attended to, everything from security for the vacated papal apartments to the assignment of rooms during the conclave. Lastly, the cardinals set the day and hour for con-clave’s opening and the beginning of the balloting that will close the Sede Vacante and inaugurate the “Petrine ministry” of a newly-elected pope. —Text copyright © J. Stations of the Cross Paul Turner The 14 Stations of the Cross adorn the walls of almost every Cath-olic church and chapel. Many parishes commemorate the Fridays of Lent with a prayerful remembrance of the passion of Christ by walking the stations with him.

Throughout our history, Christians have longed to literally walk in the footsteps of Christ. The shrines of the holy places in and around Jerusalem have drawn pilgrims inspired by the life and death of their master.

However, not everyone is able to travel to the Holy Land. So, ever since the middle ages, churches and chapels began erecting images devoted to an aspect of the passion. By the 15th century, the Franciscans had developed a devo-tion they called “stations.” The word means a place where people stand still or gath-er together. So even though it implies something “stationary,” the service obviously must include the movement of pilgrims following the footsteps of Christ. It took a while to fix the number and the names of the stations, but in 1731 Pope Clement XII established the 14 we know today.

We still find some variations on the number. Many places add a 15th station, for example, the resurrection of Jesus. Discontent with leaving Christ in the tomb when our faith expresses so much more, worshipers have found consolation in completing the story of the cross.

Over the years our church has authorized various versions of the stations for differ-ent occasions. For example, Pope John Paul II altered the traditional stations for his Good Friday service in Rome. He eliminated some stations that derived from tradi-tion, and substituted them with events from the Gospels. Here are the stations he used: 1. Jesus in the Garden of Olives; 2. Jesus betrayed by Judas; 3. Jesus con-demned to death by the Sanhedrin; 4. Jesus denied by Peter; 5. Jesus judged by Pilate; 6. Jesus flogged and crowned with thorns; 7. Jesus carries his cross; 8. Je-sus is helped by Simon of Cyrene; 9. Jesus encounters women of Jerusalem; 10. Jesus is crucified; 11. Jesus promises the kingdom to the good thief; 12. Jesus on the cross; 13. The mother of Jesus and his disciple at the cross; 14. Jesus is placed in the tomb. The stations inspire us all to follow Christ through suffering to peace.

cost of paper products, etc.

On Palm Sunday of the Passion of our Lord, March 24,2013, Incarnation will be taking up a special collection, in the second collection, to have the Parish Media Center roof replaced. The replacement of the roof is years overdue. The total replacement cost is $30,000 and we have collected $15,000 to date because of your support for Casino Night. But we are $15,000 short of our goal. We are asking for your prayerful consideration to make a donation to this worthwhile cause which so desperately needs to be done prior to the rainy seasons in Florida. Thanks once again for your continued generosity.
