Irwin County Board of Education Regular Meeting April 14, 2014 7:00 P.M. The Irwin County Board of Education met on the above date with all members present. The Agenda was approved on a motion by David Martin, second by Lamar Purvis. Recommended by the Superintendent. Motion carried unanimously. Meeting time on Agenda stated 7:30 p.m. Board met at the normal 7:00 p.m. board meeting time. The minutes from the previous meeting were approved on a motion by Gary Paulk, second by Paige Wynn. Recommended by the Superintendent. Motion carried unanimously. The Irwin County Board of Education financial report, and school activity accounts financial reports were approved on a motion by Lamar Purvis, second by Paige Wynn. Recommended by the Superintendent. Motion carried unanimously. Citizens request to address the board in regards to metal detectors were a no show. No action was taken. The Resolution for Five Year Local Facilities Plan Adoption was approved on a motion by Lamar Purvis, second by David Martin. Recommended by the Superintendent. Motion carried unanimously.

Coastal Plain Area Economic Head Start lease was approved on a motion by Gary Paulk, second by Paige Wynn. Recommended by the Superintendent. Motion carried unanimously.

The following uses of facilities were approved on a motion by Paige Wynn, second by Gary Paulk. Recommended by the Superintendent. Motion carried unanimously. 1. March – June 2014 – Use of Softball fields on Mondays/Tuesdays and Thursdays for games

and practices for Irwin County Recreational Softball and Pony League season. Sponsors – Randy Hulsey and Dewayne Vickers. (Approved by email)

2. March 29, 2014 – Use of Softball fields for family fundraiser. Sponsor – Dewayne Poole. (Approved by email)

3. April 5, 2014 – Use of Softball fields for Recreational Softball Jamboree Kickoff with silent auction to raise funds for softball department. Sponsors – Randy Hulsey and Dewayne Vickers. (Approved by email)

4. April 11, 2014 – Use of MS/HS cafeteria for MS TSA/FFA school dance, 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Sponsors – John Tuggle and Chris Paulk. (Approved by email)

5. April 12, 2014 – Use of Softball fields for Recreational Softball Jamboree in case of rainout on April 5, 2014. Sponsors – Randy Hulsey and Dewayne Vickers. (Approved by email)

The following use of bus was approved on a motion by Lamar Purvis, second by Gary Paulk. Recommended by the Superintendent. Motion carried unanimously. 1. April 11 & 12, 2014 – Irwin County Recreation Department District Track Meet in

Americus. Sponsor – Dewayne Vickers. (Approved by email) The following fundraisers were approved on a motion by Paige Wynn, second by Gary Paulk. Recommended by the Superintendent. Motion carried unanimously. Elem: 1. August – September 2014 – 5th Grade sell Lollipops – raise funds for gas and drivers for field

trips. Sponsor – Holly Tucker. Middle: 1. April 11, 2014 – ICMS TSA/FFA School Dance – raise funds for various club activities and

end of year get together. Advisors, student members, and parent volunteers will decorate the cafeteria, supervise the dance, and clean up the cafeteria. Sponsors – John Tuggle and Chris Paulk. (Approved by email)

High: 1. April 12, 2014 – Library/Prom Committee – raise funds for library materials and Prom 2015.

Ms. Vassey and library aides will record the Walk, interview seniors on the red carpet, and splice together segments from the dance into video recording (DVD) for sale for $10 in the library during the week following Prom (4/14-4/18). The profits will be evenly split between the prom committee and the library. Sponsor – Dena Vassey.

2. April 28 – May 23, 2014 – ICHS TSA – raise funds for TSA National for 1st and 2nd place students at state to compete. Tickets will be sold for crockpot meals to be cooked at school. Sponsor – David Pridgen.

3. May 16, 2014 – ICHS TSA – raise funds for National Conference in June. Students pay a fee to enter the competition. Sponsor – David Pridgen.

The following field trips were approved on a motion by David Martin, second by Lamar Purvis. Recommended by the Superintendent. Motion carried unanimously. Elem: 1. April 30, 2014 – Gifted/High Achievers – GA Capitol and Coca-Cola Museum. Sponsor –

Ashley Covington. 2. May 14 & 15, 2014 – Kindergarten – Little Ocmulgee State Park, McRae, GA. GPS

Objectives: SKL1 and SKL2. Sponsors – LaWanda Green and Tracy Daniels. 3. May 16, 2014 – 5th Grade – Wild Adventures, Valdosta, GA. Reward for good behavior and

responsibility for 2nd semester (Jan-May). Sponsor – Kim Busbin. Middle: 1. May 2, 2014 – Jr Beta – Six Flags. Objectives: Six Flags Math/Science Education Day. To

reward Jr Beta members for their grades, hard work, and performances in the club and school. Sponsors – Paige Smith and Dawn Giddens.

2. May 16, 2014 – Y-Club – reward trip to Rockin’ 8 Cinemas. Sponsors – Christy Driskell and Abby Griffin.

Motion to go into executive session for student discipline and personnel was approved on a motion by Lamar Purvis, second by David Martin. Recommended by the Superintendent. Motion carried unanimously. Executive Session ended and the board returned to Public Session. Motion to accept the Tribunal Committee’s recommendation to expel student, S.H 5805 from Irwin County Schools was made by Lamar Purvis, second by David Martin. Recommended by the Superintendent. Motion carried unanimously. The following personnel were approved on a motion by Lamar Purvis, second by Gary Paulk. Recommended by the Superintendent. Motion carried unanimously.

Motion from the floor to accept the retirement letter effective June 30, 2014 for Superintendent, Bobby Conner was approved on a motion by Gary Paulk, second by Lamar Purvis. Recommended by the Superintendent. Motion carried unanimously. Motion to pay bills was made by Gary Paulk, second by Paige Wynn. Recommended by the Superintendent. Motion carried unanimously. Motion to adjourn was made by Paige Wynn, second by Lamar Purvis. Recommended by the Superintendent.
