Chosen as the officialmagazine of the SC&RA(Specialized Carriers &Rigging Association)

    Volume 22 Number 11 AUGUST 2014

Ahighlight of this months focus on the

specialized transport sector of ourindustry is the 10th Anniversary IC

Transport 50 ranking. The first T50, containing25 companies, was in August 2005. It started inthe year that the IC50 for cranes, from wherethe Transport 50 took its inspiration, wasalready celebrating its own 10th Anniversary.

The top 10 companies in the inaugural T50are all recognisable in this months table, three of them still inthe top 10. At the top of the table then, as it is now and has beenevery year in between, is Mammoet. In the intervening 10 yearsMammoet has made a staggering addition of more than 100,000tonnes of capacity to its fleet, up from a T50 Index figure of 72,800

to 180,900, or about a 150 % increase. ALE, then as now in secondplace, has increased its T50 Index from 27,200 to 143,988 anincrease of well over 400 %. Not to be outdone, Sarens, the third

of the three originals in the top 10, has increased its capability bycloser to 500 %, from 18,000, up to just past the 100,000 mark,at 101,951.

In 2014 we have again managed to increase the number ofcompanies in the T50, from 88 to 91, which could put the magic100 in reach for next year. See this years story starting on page 15.

Coming up very soon now is the start of the industrysconferences and exhibitions season for the second half of the year. From our side we have the inaugural Cranes and Transport AsiaPacific conference (CATAP) in Singapore, part of the three daySingapore Crane Fair. For more details of this exciting series ofevents see the feature on page 37. After that, also from KHL, is theWorld Crane and Transport Summit in Florida, USA, on 12 and13 November.

Before CATAP is the SC&RA Crane and Rigging Workshop

in the USA, and there is also the CICA annual conference inAustralia. Around the same time is the IAA commercial vehicleshow in Germany. At the end of November is the Bauma Chinaexhibition and rounding out the year is the BC India show in mid-December plenty of opportunities to help increase business.

The market has spoken. With the exclusive Variable Position Counterweight (VPC) technology, the new MLC ( t)and MLC ( t) provide unique efficiencies and savings other crawler cranes simply cannot.

The VPC system is easy to operate because it automatically positions the counterweight

    to fit the required lift

Ideal for energyrelated and infrastructure projects, barge work and wind turbine installation

VPCMAX attachment counterweight never touches the ground reducing ground preparation

area and ground bearing pressure by eliminating the need for a wheeled attachment

Trade CommissionAdministrative Law JudgeDavid Shaw has issued aninitial determination thatSany Heavy Industriesinfringed patents owned byManitowoc Cranes.

The notice of InitialDetermination in CertainCrawler Cranes andComponents Thereof (Inv.No. 337-TA-887) was dated11 July 2014. The investigation

is based on a complaintfiled by Manitowoc Cranes,LLC, alleging violation ofSection 337 of the Tariff Actby Respondents Sany HeavyIndustry Company and SanyAmerica in the importationinto the United States and

    sale of certain crawler

cranes and components thatinfringe on one or moreclaims of US Patent Nos.7,546,928 (the 928 patent)and 7,967,158, and that weredesigned and manufacturedusing Manitowoc Cranesmisappropriated trade secrets.

According to the notice, the judge determined Section337 was violated. Specifically, the judge determined thatManitowoc demonstrated

that certain accusedproducts infringe claimsof the 928 patent, andthat Sany engaged in themisappropriation of certainasserted trade secrets ownedby Manitowoc.

    In an announcement dated

    23 July 2014, Manitowoc

    The complaint centres on

Sales at Kobelco Cranes wereup 47 % in the first quarterof the fiscal year starting1 April 2014, to JPY 16.9 billion(US$ 164 million). Thedivisions operating profit wasJPY 1.7 billion ($ 16.5 million).

The company said demandwas strong across all regions itserves, adding that its domesticJapanese market was givena boost by increasing publicinvestments, among

    other factors.

This high growth in the firstquarter led the parent company,Kobe Steel, to increase itsrevenue and profit forecastsfor Kobelco Cranes for the fullfiscal year.

It now expects revenues ofJPY 76 billion ($ 740 million),compared to the previousforecast of JPY 73 billion($ 710 million) and 2013sactual figure of JPY 56.6 billion($ 551 million). If this forecast

proves accurate, that wouldrepresent a 34 % increasein revenues.

Operating profits are nowexpected to come in atJPY 4 billion ($ 39 million),compared to the previousforecast of JPY 3.5 million($ 34 million) and 2013sfigure of JPY 3.2 million($ 31 million).

Although this would be a25 % increase in profit, the

divisions margin would beweaker. Last year operatingprofits as a percentage ofrevenues was 5.6 %. Thelatest forecast puts this rationat 5.3 %.

quarter but margins wereslightly lower than a yearago due to product mix andplanned investments in newproduct development andmanufacturing footprint.

Our Cranes segment ismaking progress, as bookingswere roughly equal to net salesduring the quarter and the

order entry run rate was 12 %above the prior year level on ayear to date basis.

    Commenting on the

outlook, Mr DeFeo said, Weexpect continued strengthfrom our AWP segment andimprovement from our Cranesand MHPS segments to driveimproved performance for thesecond half of 2014 comparedwith the first six months. While we see a slightly weakerend-market than we originally

anticipated, from an EPSperspective, the impact onoperating earnings is expectedto be somewhat offset by

both a lower effective taxrate and a lower anticipatedshare count. We reiterate ourannual outlook for earningsper share of between $2.50 and$2.80, excluding restructuringand other unusual items, although now on net salesof between $7.3 billionand $7.5 billion.

    Cranes buck thetrend once again

as bad as it might have been.Manufacturers like Manitowocand Terex may have seen heavy

falls, as did Palfinger, but all theother companies that make upthe ICShare Index enjoyed netgains between weeks 22 and 26.

Adding complexityA complicating factor forManitowoc is that it has beenput under pressure from

an activist investor to splitits cranes and foodservice

divisions into separate entities. The overall effect of these

competing forces was that theICShare Index moved up0.93 % over the course of

    A sharp sell-off

    at the end of July

    pushed down

    Western stockmarkets. Asia,

    however, did not see

    the same decline

    and this fact helped

    insulate the crane

    sector from the

    downturn. CHRIS

the month. It was also upsome 27.75 % compared to ayear ago, which looks good

compared to the Dows muchmore modest 6.46 % rise overthe same period.

So, having been left behindin the 2013 stock market rally, the crane sector looks like itis finally reaping the benefitsof a strengthening globaleconomy. There are still a few

manufacturers that are behindthe curve most notably Sanyand Zoomlion, both of whichare down compared to a yearago. On the whole, however, the industry's shares areseeing growth.

On first glance, theperformance of indexeslike the Dow and FTSE

100 dont look too worryingfor the month of July. Betweenweeks 22 and 26 the Dow lost1.71 % of its value and theFTSE was down just 1.04 %.

No loss is good news, ofcourse, but these figures donot look too alarming. Theissue, however, was the severity

of the drop as July came toa close. Having gone above17,000 points for the first timein its history at the start of themonth, and more or less stayedthere, there was a sharp317-point (nearly 2 %) drop

in a single day on 31 July.

Below expectationThis was due to a range of

factors, including weaker thanexpected half-year results from

some of Americas blue-chipcompanies, escalating tensionsbetween Russia and the West, and continuing solvencyproblems at a major Portuguesebank, Banco Espirito Santo.

The other point to make isthat after a five-month winningstreak, the market was due for acorrection. Stocks had arguablybecome over-priced but, inevitably after any long rally, there will always come a point

when investors judge that apeak has been reached and thatit is time to take profits.

In terms of the crane sector, however, this was mostly aUS issue, and the impact onthe global industry was not

New SPMT guidelinesaim to boost safety

    Radical new

    guidelines for the

    operation of self

    propelled modular

    transporter (SPMT)

    are due to be

    published in the

    third quarter of

    2014. GRAHAM

    ANDERSON reports

president and managingdirector at Collett & Sons inthe UK, said, We have beenworking on this for a couple

of years now and it is reallychallenging the way we havedone things in the past. It ispresenting us with a totallynew way of operating SPMTs.We will see the final outcomelater this year.

Following guidelinesCollett said that up to nowaccidents and near misseshave sometimes happenedeven when the existing safety

guidelines have been followed. When an accident happensthe fall-out can be monstrous,Collett explained Of course, there is the issue of personalsafety, and that is terrible. Ontop of that, a whole project canbe threatened and the lossescan be huge.

At the same time, in somemarkets an increasing amountof work is being done bySPMTs, they are becoming

the norm, and yet there areno guidelines at all. Nothingexists. Of course, the bestpractice guide will not be ableto address every issue in everycircumstance, but it will be a

starting point, a baseline.Senior lead engineer Andre

van der Steen, who is leadingthe work for Euro-Rigging,

said that the key was to adopta full three-dimensionalapproach, and to take intoaccount all of the forcesaffecting SPMT stability. This means paying particularattention to the elasticity orstiffness of the system andthe progressive effects oftrailer deformation.

Van der Steen said, Themost important stiffness isthe surface or the soil you are

driving on perhaps a roll-on,roll-off ramp, for example. The second is the stiffness ofthe tyres. Roughly half of thetotal stiffness is generated bythe stiffness of the tyres. Oiland hydraulic pressures arealso important, along withother forces such as externalwind loadings, of course. So there are a great manyforces involved.

    Van der Steen also added

that monitoring the completeroute to be taken was essential.Speed can affect the capacityof the trailer, and you candecrease speed for areas ofsofter soil, he said.

Van der Steen stressed thatalthough the work is basedon complex mathematicalmodels, the aim is to produce

simple guidelines that willbe practical and easy to use. With an SPMT trailer there isthe same amount of elasticityrelated variables as for a crane.Yet there are currently no loadcharts for trailers.

Much of this work might beapplicable to modular trailerson the road, although speedsare usually a lot higher andmore variable so, for now, thegroup is just concentrating on

SPMT, van der Steen said.David Collett concluded,

This is the most expensivepiece of work ESTA has evercarried out and we want tospread it as far and wide aspossible. This will changethe face of SPMT operationsin future.

    NOTE: Members of ESTAs

    SPMT working group included

    representatives from Collett,

    Department of Road Transport),

    Concerns regardingaccidents with selfpropelled modular

    transporter (SPMT) were

expressed at KHLs WorldCrane and TransportSummit in Amsterdam, theNetherlands, back in 2011.At the conference a numberof speakers pointed out thatsome SPMT loads were tippingover, even though the existingoperating rules and stabilitycalculations had been preciselyfollowed. Clients were askingwhat the industry was going todo about the problem.

In response, the EuropeanAssociation of AbnormalRoad Transport and MobileCranes (ESTA) created aworking group that includedrepresentatives from severalof its leading members, plusmanufacturers and clients.

ESTA also commissionedDutch engineering consultancycompany Euro-Riggingto develop a commonmathematical model that

could be used throughout theindustry and that would bettertake into account the full rangeof forces affecting an SPMTand its load.

    SITE REPORT

The 98 mile (104 km) twin trackrailway line from Edinburgh toCarlisle was constructed in two

stages by the North British Railway beforeit became a part of the London NorthEastern Railway (L.N.E.R). The firstpart opened in 1849 and the second in1862. The line ran south from Edinburghthough Midlothian and the Scottishborders before heading for Carlisle. It wasnamed the Waverley route after the novelsof Sir Walter Scott.

This picturesque line was notable for

its steep gradients and stunning sceneryand it came as a great shock to many thatit was marked for closure in the 1967

Beeching railway cuts, a cost reductionprogramme, which sparked a great dealof protest.

On 5 January 1969 the last scheduledpassenger service used the Waverley line.Towards the end of the year contractorsstarted to lift the tracks. Only parts ofthe railway line that were used to carryfreight traffic survived the initial closures, although these too fell into disuse in 1972.

The Waverley route was one of the firstrailway lines in the country to be run as a

private venture and it was one of the firstattempts at preservation. It was hopedthat this would save the line from closure.Following a long campaign to reinstate theline in June 2006 the Waverley Railway(Scotland) Act was passed by the ScottishParliament by 114 votes to one. The Act

meant that the line would be reopened

as far south as Tweedbank, just south ofGalashields. This was given Royal assentin July 2006.

    Following tendering processes (that

    Transporting and installing

    components for a new

    concrete bridge was a

major part of a bid to

    resurrect an historic

    railway line in the UK.

    DAVID WESTON reports

have since been abandoned) the lineis now being built by Network Rail, which appointed BAM Nuttall to buildthe 30 mile (50 km) section. It has beenestimated that the total cost of the projectwill be 350 million (US$ 500 million).

    Bridge up

In February 2014 construction of abridge, the largest new structure on theline, began. The rail bridge will spanHardengreen roundabout, betweenEskbank and Newton Grange. It is thelongest bridge to have been built fromscratch for the new railway line andconstitutes the most significant milestone

in the lines construction to date. The new bridge is made up

    from four 107 tonne concrete

beams that were cast in Irelandby Shay Murtagh Precast.

Transport from Ireland to theconstruction site was providedby J. B. Rawcliffe and G. C. S.Johnson. Challenges during thetransportation of the beamsincluded stormy weather andcancellations of the ferry fromIreland across the Irish Sea. Theconditions delayed the transport

of the cargo by a day.A weather window appeared and the

beams made the crossing in relativelycalm weather, and were delivered to site

on time. On arrival at the site a 1,200tonne capacity Liebherr LTM 11200-9.1wheeled mobile telescopic crane fromMammoet was used to lift the bridgebeams into position. The project is due tobe completed in 2015.

    Lifting and transport company Guangdong

    LIFT Engineering Machinery (GPEC) helped

move a 3,200 tonne bridge section for the

    Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge project in

    Zhongshan, Guangdong Province.

The bridge was moved using 100 axlelines of Tianjie S2.43 self-propelled modular

transporter (SPMT). GPEC was contracted by

    Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry to transport

the 132.6 x 33.1 metre structure from the

fabrication facility yard to a barge, ready

    for shipment.

Challenges on the project included a

short time frame of two hours, which had

to be met, due to tidal conditions. For the

    roll-on process, the hydraulic compensation

stroke of approximately 700 mm of the

SPMT helped keep balance during the

roll-on process. The support system is set to three

    hydraulic groups according to cargo

weight, centre of gravity location and road

    conditions, a spokesperson said, This

ensures a uniform axle load on rough

road while running. Besides, the barge is

equipped with pressurised cabin to outward

    drainage to ensure the balance.

to a cement factory in Lincolnshire, UK, after

    equipment was damaged by floods.

The kiln was transported in two shell

sections, both of which were collected from

    Magdeburg, Germany. The shell sections

had a diameter of 4 metres, with the largest

measuring 19.7 m long and the smallest

measuring 2 m long. The largest sectionweighed 640 tonnes. To meet German road

regulations, a vessel bridge trailer was used

to transport the larger of the two sections

    through the country.

Once outside Germany, the cargo was

transhipped onto an 8-axle semi-low bed

trailer. The smaller section was turned and

loaded onto a euro low loader, a company

spokesperson said. The pieces were then

sailed from Rotterdam to Killingholme port

    in the UK.

On arrival the sections were transported

by road. Some of the roads along the routewere increasingly narrow, and a private

escort vehicle was used to guide the larger of

Lift & Shift Engineering MiddleEast (LSEME), a joint venturecompany from Lift & Shift India

and OHI group Oman, has completed thetransportation of 15,000 tonnes of cargo atits fabrication yard in Sohar, Oman.

The cargo consisted of five offshoredecks and a bridge. The modules were to bedelivered to the ADMA site in Umm Luluand Umm Kaasar in Abu Dhabis offshorefield, a company spokesperson said.

    The offshore decks weighed between2,250 and 3,600 tonnes each. The smallestdeck measured 27 x 30 x 23 metres andthe largest measured 35 x 43 x 33 m. Thebridge measured 85 x 6 x 6 m and weighed

570 tonnes. For the transport, LSEME used 152lines of self propelled modular transporter(SPMT), seven power pack units (PPU), 28ballast pumps, four mooring winches two400 class barges, one 300 class barge and a280 class barge.

Preparations for the transports and loadouts included trailer arrangements, marineanalysis and a ballasting and loading planfor the load out of the modules, a companyspokesperson added.

The first two load outs were of the

    WHT 4 offshore deck, which measured35 x 43 x 33 m and weighed 2,900 tonnes,and the WHT 6 offshore deck, whichmeasured 47 x 27 x 37 m and weighed3,600 tonnes. The load out was completedon a 400 class barge.

WHT 4 was loaded out first using foursets of SPMT and WHT 6 was moved

Record load out for Lift & Shiftusing five sets of axles of 148 SPMT lineswith seven power pack units (PPU). Thetransport was carried out during the

evening, meaning extra lighting was neededto safely complete the project. The offshore decks were loaded onto

the SPMT, welded and lashed into position, before being transported to the jetty. Thedecks were then loaded onto the barge, ready to be sailed to the Umm LuluDevelopment Project, Abu Dhabi, UAE.

The second load out was for the MFTdeck and WHT 2 deck, which weighed2,600 tonnes and 3,050 tonnes, respectively.Four sets of 32 lines of SPMT were used totransport the modules to the jetty, before

they were loaded onto a 400 class barge.

A total of four trailers in an 8-fileformation with 128 lines of SPMT wasutilised for the transport of MFT and WHT

2 decks the transport, a spokespersonfrom LSEME said. The module wastransported over a distance of 1 km andthe trailer team was equipped with wirelesscommunication.

The final deck to be transported wasthe WHT 1, which measured 27 x 30 x 23m and weighed 2,250 tonnes. To move themodule 96 lines of SPMT in four files wereused. The deck was transported 1 km to a

jetty before being loaded out on a 330 classbarge. The final task of the project was tomove the bridge to the jetty, where it could

be loaded onto a 280 class barge.

no easy feat. As a spokesperson fromSouthwest Industrial Rigging explains, this

is because road regulations vary betweenmunicipalities and jurisdictions from city-to-city and state-to-state.

For manufacturers, this means thatspecialized transport needs to be adaptableand flexible. Bruce Stemp, project managerat Lampson International in the USAexplains, With restrictions constantlybeing put in place by municipalities, trailersoperating within state and county linesmust quickly and easily adapt to a numberof different situations.

Custom modelsWith different restrictions beingimplemented across the world, manufacturers are providing end userswith a range of equipment. The latestmodel of specialized transport for specialistcompany Collett Transport from the UK,for example, is a new custom 550 tonnepayload STB 550 side girder deck fromScheuerle in Germany.

The hydraulically extendable STB 550is the latest version in a series designed forflexibility in its configuration. The deck

span range is from 29,200 to 34,200 mmlong. Loading width can be adjusted from3,450 to 7,400 mm. The vertical lift of thedeck in the load area is 1,650 mm.

managing director, said, The trailer willbe of great importance and interest to thepower generation and heavy engineeringindustries. With this new higher level ofcarrying capacity, currently unrivalledin Europe, it will open the door formanufacturers of generators, transformersand steel castings, to increase the size andweight of their product portfolio.

Trailer manufacturer Goldhofer has alsobeen tasked with providing a customisedtrailer for UK company Allelys HeavyHaulage. The Faktor 5 vessel bridge will

be used for transporting heavy loads, including transformers, generators andlarge industrial components.

This extremely efficient system offerssafe and reliable transportation for loadsof up 500 tonnes with a deadweight of 100tonnes, the manufacturer said. The modelhas a vertical lifting stroke of 1.8 metres, aloading width from 3 to 6.75 m and loadinglength is 11 to 17 m.

Also new from Goldhofer is a range ofheavy duty modular transporters and selfpropelled modules, including the PST/ES-E

6 (315) and the PST/ES-E (285) modulartransporter and the Type THP/SL-S, THP/SL-L and THP/SL heavy duty modules. Themodels are designed for concentrated andheavy-duty loads.

Customer satisfactionTo help meet customer demands, transportservice providers need to have a rangeof equipment. Transport company

Van der Vlist, for example, has added newequipment to its fleet, including a 10 axlesemi low trailer with a 3-axle modularsection and 7-axles. The difference withthis trailer is the combination of multipleaxles to take up to 100 tonnes, as wellas the lower height, a spokesperson fromVan der Vlist says. We have also investedin extendible trailers tailored specifically towind turbine blades, able to take 36 tonnes.

Southwest Industrial Rigging in theUSA has expanded its fleet with 20 linesof Goldhofer THP-DR and two STZ-H 9

semi low loaders. The transport providerhas also added two TK110HED low decktrailers from Trail King.

For heavy transportation requirements,Lampson International offers trackdriven crawler transporters for haulingheavy outsize loads in difficult terrainand extreme environments. The

the market is a dual-lane TrailKingtransport trailer, which was designed forUSA-based Crane Rental Corporation. Thehigh-capacity trailer has telescoping axlesthat extend from 3.6 to 6 m.

To meet demands set out by regulations,Mammoet worked with manufacturer

Scheuerle to develop a hybrid power packunit (PPU) allowing emission-free and lownoise operation. Also new from Mammoetis a concept for a nine axle Canadianhighway trailer. The trailer has a 100 tonnecapacity (80 tonnes at 12 m deck length),a maximum gross weight of 280 tonnes, agooseneck suitable for 3- and 4-axle tractorunits, and an extended length of 30.5 m.The model was designed by Mammoetin co-operation with the Ministry ofTransportation (MOT) of British Columbia,Victoria, Canada.

Also designed with regulations in mindis the Panther trailer series from trailermanufacturer Doll. A Doll spokespersonsays, The series features high payloadsof up to 110 tonnes, manoeuvrability, a12 tonne axle load, a loading height of850 mm, a total stroke of up to 405 mmand a steering angle of 55 degrees. Thetrailers have double wishbone technology.

From manufacturer Faymonville is theCombiMax semi-trailer. Describing someof the features, a spokesperson from thecompany says, All steering systems can be

controlled by a newly developed gooseneck, the One-Neck-Technology, regardless ofwhether it involves vehicles with 4- or8-tyred pendle [pendular] axles, vehicleswith knuckle-steering axles (hydraulicor air suspension), or vehicles withindependent suspension from theTwin Axle II series.

transporters have a patented Rolli-Flextrack roller suspension system and areavailable in capacities from 400 to 4,000 UStons (363 to 3,629 tonnes).

Transport company Tradelossa based inMexico, has recently acquired a new strandjack system and Goldhofer extendableflatbeds. We are trying to be one stepahead of what is coming in the industry inMexico, a company spokesperson explains.

For the South African market, RotranLogistics Services, part of Eskom, basedin Johannesburg, South Africa, offersalmost five hundred axle lines and eightgirder beam trailers with capacities from200 to 600 tonnes from manufacturersincluding Nicolas, Cometto, Goldhofer

and Faymonville. In Italy Fagioli purchased 50 axlelines of modular trailers and some selfpropelled modular transporters (SPMT).Polish transport company ZTE Radomoffers a range of equipment for transportand building works. Equipment includesa range of modular platform trailers fromKesselbrcken, Goldhofer and Broshuis.

For transport company Stiglich, thebusiest markets for moving oversize andoverweight loads are in the mining sector. To meet demands throughout this sector,

Stiglich uses Goldhofer trailers, withloading configurations from 10 up to 14axle modular trailers.

New facilities are other ways to providecustomer support. Transport providerVanguard, for example, has recentlyinvested in a new facility in Richards Bay.The depot has two SPMT trailers andheavy load tools and accessories. RolandCumings, Vanguard specialised transportand lifting senior manager, says, Thefacility is proving to be a very valuableand much needed asset to the heavy load

    LAURA HATTON reports

Compared to truck cranes and allterrains, boom trucks can be a morecost effective way to carry out a

lift. Jim Glazer from manufacturer Elliott

Equipment Company explains more, Themajor advantages of a boom truck overa truck crane is that the commercial truckchassis is more comfortable, easier toservice and easier to resell than apurpose-built carrier.

Ruben Olivas Saunders, Manitowocglobal product director of boom trucksand carry deck cranes, adds, Anotheradvantage of a boom truck is that becausethey are mounted on commercial truckchassis, most often they comply withhighway travel rules.

The most recent model from ElliottEquipment Company, for example, is the45142. The 45 US ton (40 tonne) capacitytelescopic crane has a reach of 63.1 metresand a lifting capacity of 40.8 tonnes at2.1 m radius. It is fitted with a five section43.3 m powered boom. There is also afederal bridge-legal version of the 45142,which is legal in all 50 US states, themanufacturer adds.

Altecs latest offerings include the 45 ton(40 tonne) capacity AC45-127S boomtruck, a new cab, and a new load moment

the NBT60 and the NBT15 series. Thenew NBT60 has a 60 US ton (54.4 tonne)capacity and a 39 m five-section,full-power boom. A 13.7 m two-section,off settable manual extension is alsoavailable. The crane is roadable withoutthe need for additional permits in manyregions. It has two-piece, hydraulicallyremovable counterweight slabs that canbe stored on the front outrigger box,CanBus outrigger controls and an X-shaped

footprint eliminate the need for a singlefront outrigger, the manufacturer adds.

The new NBT15 models include the14 ton (12.7 tonne) capacity NBT14, the15 ton (13.4 tonne) NBT15 and the 16 ton(14.5 tonne) NBT16. All three crane modelshave an 18.3 m three-section boom. A6.7 m single section jib is also available.

All three models have updated out anddown outriggers, which expand between2.23 m and 5.28 m.

The latest boom truck from PalfingerSany is the SPC250 truck-mountedtelescopic crane (TMTC). The crane is

built on a commercial chassis and is thefirst model in this range. Further modelswith higher lifting capacity are plannedfor later in 2014. The SPC250 has a liftingcapacity of 25 tonnes, a lifting momentof 102.0 tonne-metres and a 32 mtelescopic boom. Optional extras includean Arctic package, which will help thecrane to work in temperatures down tominus 40 degrees Celsius.

From US crane manufacturerQMC Hydraulic is the 50 ton (45 tonne)8060R. It has a lift capacity of 30 tons

(27 tonnes) at 4.5 m and fits on an 8.4 mwheel base chassis that only requires onetag axle to be 50 states DOT legal. Payloadfor tools and equipment is more than2.7 tonnes, the manufacturer adds.

New from crane manufacturer Terex isthe Crossover 8000, which was launchedat ConExpo 2014. It has a proven X-patternoutrigger design for extra stability, an80 ton (72 tonne) rated capacity and a38.4 m boom. When configured with a17.3 m jib, maximum tip height is 57 m.The Crossover 8000 is approved for

Freightliner, Kenworth and Western Starcommercial chassis.

Future shiftsMost manufacturers are keeping quiet asto what new products are in development.Demands for boom trucks are, however, shifting towards the higher end of thecapacity scale. Matt Trefz explains, Boomtrucks are always getting bigger.Certain work applications favour anever-increasing lifting capacity and thispushes manufacturers to develop

    larger models.
