Note: BladeCenter Management Module (MM), Advanced Management Module(AMM) and I/O Modules are not packaged in UpdateXpress SystemPacks. You can use IBM UpdateXpress CD 3 to perform updates onMMs, AMMs, and BladeCenter I/O Modules. For details onUpdateXpress CDs, see IBM UpdateXpress v4.04 CDs - Servers(http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-53046.html) on

the IBM Personal computing support site.

2.0 UPDATEXPRESS SYSTEM PACKS HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS----------------------------------------------------------------

IBM UpdateXpress System Packs contain updates to a number of hardwarecomponents (firmware and device drivers) that are supported on Windowsand Linux operating systems. For a list of components and operatingsystems supported in a particular system pack, see the system pack'sChange History file.

2.1 UpdateXpress System Packs supported hardware components-----------------------------------------------------------

UpdateXpress System Packs contain updates to Linux and Windows devicedrivers and firmware. For a list of components supported in a particularsystem pack, see the system pack's Change History file.

2.2 UpdateXpress System Packs supported operating systems---------------------------------------------------------UpdateXpress System Packs can be applied to both Linux and Windows

operating systems.

A single 32-bit version of UpdateXpress System Pack Installer supportsselect Microsoft(R) Windows operating systems. For a list of MicrosoftWindows operating systems supported by a particular system pack, see thesystem pack's Change History file.

Each 32-bit executable is specified on the command line assetupVER#.exe, where setup is the name of the executable and VER#indicates the installer version number. For example, in v1.10 of theinstaller, the Windows executable was named:

setup110.exe

For each release of the installer, you can distinguish the MicrosoftWindows executable name by its version number.

An individual version of UpdateXpress System Pack Installer (oneexecutable for each operating system) supports select Linux operatingsystems. For a list of Linux operating systems supported by a particularsystem pack, see the system pack's Change History file.

All Linux executable files are indicated on the command line asinstallVER#.LinuxOS, where install is the name of the executable, VER#indicates the installer version number, and LinuxOS is the Linux

operating system name. For example, in v1.10 of the installer, the Linuxexecutables were named:

Page 3: ibm_utl_uxsp_d6sp03a-1.50_sles10_32-64

install110.rhel3install110.rhel4install110.sles9install110.sles10

For each release of the installer, you can distinguish the Linuxexecutables by their version number.

Important: For each Linux distribution, there is a single executableversion of UpdateXpress System Pack Installer that includes both32 and 64-bit native binaries. For example, in v1.10 of theinstaller, the RHEL3 x86 and RHEL3 AMD64/EM64T versions werecombined into one executable, install110.rhel3.

You may need to determine which operating systems your server supports. This information can found on the ServerProven(R) Web site(http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/).

3.0 UPDATEXPRESS SYSTEM PACKS INSTALLATION INFORMATION------------------------------------------------------

You install UpdateXpress System Packs using the UpdateXpress System PackInstaller. For a complete description of the Installer and its use, seethe IBM UpdateXpress System Pack Installer User's Guide.

You must first download the UpdateXpress System Pack you want to applyto your system. In general, the scenario for downloading systems packsis as follows:1. Download the UpdateXpress System Pack for the desired

machine-type/operating system combination into a local or

network-shared directory.2. Download the latest UpdateXpress System Pack Installer into the

directory where the system packs reside.3. Run the installer. NOTE: Before running the installer, close all programs and

Dialog boxes that may be open, such as any "New Hardware Found" Windows dialogs.

Always choose the same destination directory for each UpdateXpressSystem Pack download. You can download multiple system packs fordifferent machine-types into the same directory. When you run theinstaller, it detects the machine-type and uses the correct content forthe machine-type. In some cases, there may be common files betweensystem packs. When this occurs, it is safe to overwrite the existingfile. The files with the same name will override one another as they aredownloaded into the same directory.

You apply UpdateXpress System Packs using the UpdateXpress System PackInstaller. UpdateXpress System Pack Installer inventories the system onwhich the update will be performed, queries a specified location for alist of applicable update packages, compares the inventory to theapplicable update list, recommends a set of updates to apply, and thendeploys those updates to the system.

UpdateXpress System Pack Installer is an executable file that is not

installed. You can invoke it from a command-line interface (CLI) or,when using the windows version, a graphical user interface (GUI). Ifusing the GUI, the UpdateXpress System Pack Installer executable file

Page 4: ibm_utl_uxsp_d6sp03a-1.50_sles10_32-64

8/8/2019 ibm_utl_uxsp_d6sp03a-1.50_sles10_32-64

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ibmutluxspd6sp03a-150sles1032-64 4/12

must reside in the directory containing the UpdateXpress System Pack. This is because the installer searches the current working directory forthe UpdateXpress System Pack.

A full description of UpdateXpress System Pack Installer functionalitycan be found in the IBM UpdateXpress System Pack Installer User's Guide.

3.1 Linux device drivers and UXSPs----------------------------------

The default operation for Linux device drivers is to maintain the Linuxdistribution certified drivers whenever possible. The Linux version ofthe UpdateXpress System Pack Installer does an inventory of the existingdriver in the Linux distribution. It then compares the version that isalready installed to the one in the UpdateXpress System Pack. If itdiscovers that the Linux driver in the UpdateXpress System Pack isalready available, it will not install the driver included in theUpdateXpress System Pack.

You can use the following command to override the Linux distributionversion of the driver:

./install.sh --update --override

Once a driver has been overridden, future UpdateXpress System Packinstallations can update the driver as the UpdateXpress System PackInstaller runs the following command:

/install.sh --update --force-if-overridden

Running this command installs the driver that was previously overridden

in a past installation. However, this default behavior does not allow anUpdateXpress System Pack driver to install over a newer UpdateXpressSystem Pack driver that is already installed.

To perform an unconditional install of the device driver (assuming acompatible device driver is available), run the following command:

/install.sh --update --force
