Media StrategyObjective

Protect customers’ investment in new 3592 tape mediaDescription

The new 3592 tape cartridge will be compatible with the next two generations of 3592 tape drives

Read back two generationsWrite back one generation

Write back support is a new capabilityAllows for ease of migration,

The next generation 3592 tape drive is being designed to write to cartridges in the first generation format This will support the ability of first generation 3592 tape drives to continue to read data created by the next generation tape drive

Transitioning to the next generation format will substantially increase the amount of data stored on the same tape cartridge

Plan is to support up to 500-700 GB of native capacity

Media reutilization may result in substantial savings on tape media for some customers

Capacity Scaling - Overview

Default Tape Read/Write Processing

300 GB

Scaled Tape Processing - example: to 20%

60 GB

Not used

Scaling can provide the capability to tailor the amount of tape used to meet specific application needs

Shortening the tape improves the time to first byte of data - Time to first byte of data can be as low as 30 seconds (need test to verify)Helps eliminate the need to manage different physical tape media for fast access or high capacity

Capacity Scaling - OverviewDescription

Utilizes the standard 3592 Tape CartridgeTapes may be scaled to either full length or 60 GBsScaling is implemented by tape drive commandsTape cartridges can repeatedly be scaled/unscaled

Operating EnvironmentszSeries support for scaling

OS/390 V2 R10 and z/OSAvailable in SMS and non-SMS environments enabled environments

Uses ACS Routines (Dataclass) and Open/Close/EOV processingDFSMShsm®and DFSMSdfp®OAM exploit this new feature

Open SystemsMay use pre-scaled tape media,

Use of assigned serial number ranges for the scaled media and ordering of IBM prescaled, labeled media

Application vendors have not yet announced support for tape drive scaling

Potential BenefitUp to a 70% reduction in locate time

Provides customers with the ability to use one tape cartridge and one tape drive for both high rapid access and high capacity
