Overview

What

is

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager?

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

is

an

intelligent

console

for

the

storage

environment

that

provides

a

set

of

policy-driven

automated

tools

for

managing

storage

capacity,

availability,

events,

performance

and

assets

in

your

enterprise

environment,

including

NetWare,

NAS,

SSA,

ESS,

and

Microsoft

Cluster

Server

technologies,

as

well

as

RDBMSs

such

as

Oracle,

Sybase

SQL

Server,

Microsoft

SQL

Server,

and

UDB/DB2.

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

can

help

you

identify,

evaluate,

control

and

predict

your

enterprise

storage

management

assets.

And

because

it

is

policy-based,

through

its

autonomic

self-healing

capabilities,

it

can

detect

potential

problems

and

automatically

make

adjustments

based

on

the

policies

and

actions

you

have

established.

For

example,

it

can

notify

you

when

your

system

is

running

out

of

disk

space

or

warn

you

of

impending

storage

hardware

failure.

By

alerting

you

to

these

and

other

issues

related

to

your

stored

data,

it

enables

you

to

prevent

unnecessary

system

and

application

downtime.

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager’s

user

interface

(UI)

uses

a

familiar

tree-based

navigation

system

similar

to

the

scheme

used

in

Microsoft®

Windows®

Explorer.

This

system

allows

you

to

see

a

hierarchical

organization

of

the

product

and

its

features

in

the

left

pane

of

the

interface

while

viewing

detailed

reports

and

charts

in

the

right

pane.

Purpose

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager’s

NAS

support

enables

storage

administrators

to

monitor,

report

on,

and

manage

network-attached

storage

(NAS)

resources.

The

NAS

component

is

seamlessly

integrated

with

the

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

to

provide

organizations

with

a

universal

view

of

direct

attached

and

network

attached

storage,

from

a

filesystem

or

application

perspective.

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager’s

NAS

functionality

helps

organizations

manage

network

attached

storage

as

an

integrated

part

of

the

enterprise

storage

environment,

reducing

storage

costs,

better

managing

enterprise

storage

resources,

preventing

storage

problems,

and

ensuring

data

and

application

availability.

Architecture

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

is

based

upon

a

three-tier

architecture:

a

UI

component,

a

Server

component,

and

an

agent

component.

v

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

agents

collect

statistics

about

your

storage

and

send

that

information

to

the

centralized

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Server.

Install

you

will

need

to

v

The

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

Server:

Receives

information

from

the

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

agent(s)

and

saves

that

information

in

the

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

enterprise

repository.

The

enterprise

repository

is

where

all

of

your

storage

information

and

usage

statistics

are

stored.

All

Agent

and

UI

access

to

the

central

repository

is

done

via

a

series

of

calls

and

requests

made

to

the

Server.

Receives

user

requests

made

in

the

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

user

interface

and

retrieves

the

requested

statistical

information

from

the

enterprise

repository.

Users

can

then

use

this

information

construct

and

view

reports.v

The

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

UI

enables

users

to

make

requests

for

information

and

then

generate/display

reports

based

on

that

information.

Note:

All

database

access

is

done

via

the

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

Server

component

to

maximize

performance

and

to

eliminate

the

need

to

install

database

connectivity

software

on

your

machines.

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

scan

jobs

enable

you

to

gather

detailed

information

about

the

NAS

filesystems

within

your

environment.

To

do

this,

you

must

assign

an

agent

to

each

of

the

filesystems

discovered

by

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

during

the

Discovery

process.

If

agents

were

unable

to

log

into

a

NAS

filer,

you

will

not

be

able

to

assign

agents

to

the

filesystems

on

those

filers.

You

can

assign

an

agent

to

scan

one

or

more

filesystems.

However,

keep

in

mind

that

the

size

of

a

filesystem

affects

the

speed

at

which

that

filesystem

is

scanned.

Distributing

filesystem

scanning

responsibilities

among

different

agents

can

greatly

increase

the

speed

at

which

scan

information

is

gathered.

For

example,

if

you

have

three

small

filesystems

and

one

large

one,

you

might

want

to

assign

one

agent

to

each

of

the

three

smaller

filesystems,

and

a

different

agent

to

the

large

filesystem.

IBM

Tivoli

enable

you

to

gather

detailed

information

about

the

NAS

filesystems

within

your

environment.

To

do

this,

you

must

assign

an

agent

to

each

of

the

filesystems

discovered

during

the

Discovery

process.

If

IBM

Tivoli

agents

were

unable

to

log

into

a

NAS

filer,

you

will

not

be

able

to

assign

agents

to

the

filesystems

on

those

filers.

You

can

assign

an

agent

to

scan

one

or

more

filesystems.

However,

keep

in

mind

that

the

size

of

a

filesystem

affects

the

speed

at

which

that

filesystem

is

scanned.

Distributing

filesystem

scanning

responsibilities

among

different

agents

can

greatly

increase

the

speed

at

which

scan

information

is

gathered.

For

example,

if

you

have

three

small

filesystems

and

one

large

one,

you

might

want

to

assign

one

agent

to

each

of

the

three

smaller

filesystems,

and

a

different

agent

to

the

large

filesystem.

To

assign

agents

to

the

filesystems

on

NAS

filers

1.

Access

the

Scan/Probe

Agent

Administration

window

in

the

Configuration

General

node

of

the

function

tree

to

assign

agents

to

each

of

the

filesystems

discovered

in

your

NAS

filers.

You

can

assign

any

agent

to

a

filesystem

that

has

the

ability

to

access

that

filesystem.

Note:

If

you

v

(optional)

add

SNMP

communities

Typically,

you

perform

this

step

immediately

after

installing

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager.

Once

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

is

configured,

you

do

not

have

to

perform

this

step

again

unless

changes

within

your

organization

require

it

(such

as

changing

the

default

login

information,

adding

a

new

SNMP

community,

adding

a

NAS

filer,

and

so

on).

3.

Define

monitoring

groups

to

represent

the

entities

within

your

organization.

Organizing

the

users,

NAS

filers,

filesystems,

and

directories

within

your

organization

into

groups

enables

you

to

quickly

target

specific

entities

against

which

to

collect

information,

set

quotas

and

constraints,

and

view

reports.

Create

groups

before

you

define

the:

v

Monitoring

jobs

that

will

collect

information

about

your

NAS

filers

v

Quotas

and

Constraints

that

will

enforce

your

storage

policies

4.

Determine

what

information

you

want

to

gather

about

NAS

filers

and

define

the

appropriate

Monitoring

jobs.

Determining

what

information

you

want

to

gather

about

your

NAS

filers

is

critical

to

helping

you

implement

an

SRM

strategy.

Probes

and

Scans

are

the

Monitoring

jobs

you

can

define

to

collect

information

about

NAS

filers.

The

information

gathered

by

these

jobs

is:

v

used

to

determine

if

alerts

are

triggered

v

reflected

on

the

reports

available

in

the

Reporting

facility

Define

Monitoring

jobs

after

you

have:

v

assigned

an

agent

to

each

of

the

filesystems

on

the

NAS

filers

discovered

by

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

v

determined

the

types

of

information

you

want

to

collect

about

your

NAS

filers

Once

you

define

a

job

to

collect

specific

information

about

your

storage,

you

do

not

need

to

redefine

that

job

in

the

future

(unless

you

want

to

make

changes

to

it

such

as

adding

new

computers

or

groups)—defining

a

Monitoring

job

is

a

one-time

only

task.

Once

Step

Why

do

this?

When

and

how

often

should

I

do

this?

5.

Determine

what

conditions

must

occur

before

you

are

alerted

to

a

problem

within

a

NAS

filer.

Determining

when

and

how

you

will

be

alerted

to

conditions

within

a

NAS

filer

is

important

to

helping

you

maintain

and

administer

your

resources.

Define

Computer,

Filesystem,

and

Directory

Alerts

that

will

notify

you

when

certain

conditions

are

detected

in

a

NAS

filer,

filesystem,

and

directory.

When

a

condition

is

met

and

alert

is

triggered,

you

can

choose

to

be

notified

through

a

SNMP

trap,

TEC

Event,

login

notification,

event

log

(Windows),

syslog

(UNIX),

or

e-mail.

If

you

need

a

way

to

find

and

fix

problems—or

potential

problems—as

alerts

are

triggered,

you

can

use

the

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

Triggered

Action

facility

to

automatically

address

these

problems.

You

should

define

alerts:

v

after

defining

Monitoring

jobs

v

based

on

the

information

gathered

by

Monitoring

jobs

Once

you

define

an

Alert,

you

do

not

need

to

redefine

it

in

the

future

(unless

you

want

to

make

changes

to

it)—defining

an

Alert

is

a

one-time

only

task.

Computer,

Filesystem,

and

Directory

Alerts

are

checked

whenever

a

Probe

or

Scan

job

is

run.

Computer

Alerts

are

triggered

by

Probes.

Filesystem

and

Directory

Alerts

are

triggered

by

Scans.

6.

Determine

the

storage

policies

you

want

to

enforce.

Enforcing

storage

policies

within

your

organization

can

be

critical

to

ensuring

the

proper

and

most

cost-effective

use

of

your

storage

devices.

Use:

v

Quotas

to

define

limits

on

the

amount

of

storage

that

a

user

or

a

group

of

users

can

consume

v

Constraints

to

define

the

acceptable

and

unacceptable

file

types,

file

sizes,

and

file

owners

for

a

computer

or

a

set

of

computers

in

your

environment

v

Scheduled

Actions

to

run

scripts

against

storage

devices

on

a

schedule

that

you

define

When

a

condition

within

a

Quota

or

Constraint

is

met,

you

can

choose

to

be

notified

through

a

SNMP

trap,

TEC

Event,

login

notification,

event

log

(Windows),

syslog

(UNIX),

or

e-mail.

Define

Quotas

and

Constraints:

v

after

defining

Scan

jobs

v

based

on

the

information

gathered

by

Scan

jobs

Quotas:

Once

defined,

a

Quota

will

run

according

to

the

schedule

that

you

specified.

Because

Quotas

look

at

the

information

gathered

by

Scans

to

determine

if

a

quota

is

violated,

you

should

schedule

Quotas

to

run

after

the

appropriate

Scan

job(s).

Constraints:

Constraints

are

automatically

checked

whenever

an

appropriate

Scan

is

run.

Scheduled

Actions:

You

can

run

Scheduled

Actions:

immediately,

once

at

a

specified

time/date,

or

repeatedly

according

to

a

schedule

you

specify.

7.

Use

the

Reporting

Facility

to

define

reporting

groups

and

view

information

gathered

by

Monitoring

jobs,

Quotas,

and

Constraints.

The

Reporting

facility

enables

you

to

have

a

detailed

or

summary

view

of

all

your

NAS

filers,

enterprise-wide

or

by

age,

operating

system,

computer,

file

system,

and/or

user.

Use

reporting

groups

to

define

a

set

of

resources

and

monitoring

groups

upon

which

you

want

to

report.

All

the

information

available

through

the

Reporting

facility

is

gathered

by

Monitoring,

Alerting,

or

Quota

jobs.

You

should

view

reports

through

the

Reporting

facility

whenever

you

want

to

view

information

about

the

NAS

filers

within

your

enterprise.

Basics

The

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

interface

is

designed

to

include

a

number

of

repeating

elements

and

consistent

themes

to

help

you

better

perform

the

critical

storage

management

tasks

related

your

NAS

filers.

By

understanding

how

these

elements

and

themes

form

a

logical

pattern

with

the

interface,

you

can

learn

to

quickly

navigate

and

use

the

Monitoring,

Alerting,

Policy

Management,

and

Reporting

facilities

within

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager.

Creatable

Objects

You

can

create

a

number

objects

when

working

in

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

to

help

simplify

the

Monitoring,

Alerting,

and

Reporting

process.

Objects

represent

reusable

definitions

you

can

execute

to

perform

specific

tasks.

Each

object

you

can

create

belongs

to

a

specific

object

type.

The

main

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

object

types

appear

in

the

product

function

tree

and

are

defined

in

the

following

table:

Object

Type

Function

and

Use

Groups

(Monitoring,

Policy

Management)

Create

named

groups

of

computers,

file

systems,

directories,

users,

and

OS

user

groups

within

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager.

This

allows

you

to

more

easily

refer

to

those

entities

when

you

are

defining

things

like

monitoring

jobs.

Discovery

(Monitoring)

Run

Discovery

jobs

to

search

for

NAS

filers

and

their

associated

filesystems

that

are

not

yet

being

monitored

by

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager.

Probes

(Monitoring)

Create

Probe

objects

to

itemize

and

create

and

inventory

of

your

storage

assets,

such

as

NAS

filers,

controllers,

disk

drives,

file

systems,

logical

units,

etc.

Scans

(Monitoring)

Create

Scan

objects

to

monitor

the

usage

and

consumption

of

your

storage.

Profiles

(Monitoring)

Create

Profile

objects

to

define

what

files

you

want

to

scan

and

what

statistical

information

you

want

to

gather.

Quotas

(Policy

Management)

Create

Quota

objects

to

control

how

much

space

a

user,

or

group

of

users,

can

consume.

This

consumption

can

be

controlled

at

three

levels:

the

filesystem

level,

the

computer

level,

or

the

entire

network

level.

Constraints

(Policy

Management)

Create

Constraint

objects

to

define

what

are

“acceptable”

and

“unacceptable”

file

types,

file

sizes,

and

file

owners

on

a

computer

or

a

set

of

computers

in

your

environment.

This

allows

you

to

do

things

like

restrict

users

from

storing

files

such

as

MP3

files

on

servers.

Alerts

(Alerts)

Create

Alert

objects

to

define

events

for

which

you

want

to

be

notified.

By

defining

the

events

that

you

want

to

be

alerted

about,

you

will

be

notified

by

the

product

in

the

manner

you

specify

when

one

of

those

events

occurs.

Schedulable

Jobs

Another

type

of

creatable

object

are

Schedulable

Jobs.

When

you

expand

the

tree

under

a

named

object

(for

example,

Probes),

the

actual

job

runs

for

that

object

are

displayed.

For

example,

the

monitoring

jobs

that

you

create

will

run

according

to

the

schedule

that

you

specify

when

you

define

the

object.

How

Quotas

Work

1.

A

Scan

gathers

extensive

information

about

the

NAS

filers,

filesystems,

and

directories

within

an

enterprise.

This

information

is

stored

in

the

enterprise

repository.

2.

When

a

Quota

job

runs,

it

checks

the

information

in

the

enterprise

repository

to

determine

if

any

Quota

violations

exist.

3.

If

there

are

any

violations,

an

alert

is

triggered

and

the

appropriate

action

is

taken.

Note:

Because

the

information

analyzed

by

Quotas

is

provided

by

scans,

you

should

schedule

a

Quota

to

run

after

all

the

corresponding

scans.

This

ensures

that

Quotas

are

using

the

latest

information

to

determine

violations.

Working

with

Scripts

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager’s

has

two

facilities

that

enable

you

to

execute

scripts

against

your

storage

devices:

v

The

Triggered

Action

facility

enables

you

to

define

thresholds

and

constraints

that

result

in

notification

or

action.

v

The

Scheduled

Action

facility

enables

you

to

schedule

scripts

to

run

against

selected

NAS

filers

and

NAS

filer

groups.

Both

facilities

are

script-based,

allowing

you

to

use

any

third-party

tools

for

actions,

such

as

archiving,

backup

and

recovery,

or

provisioning.

How

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

Runs

Scripts

During

installation,

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

creates

a

directory

on

every

Server

and

agent

machine

called:

\<install_directory>\scripts,

where

<install_directory>

represents

to

the

directory

where

the

agent

or

Server

is

installed.

The

default

installation

directory

for

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

components

is:

v

(Windows)

\Program

Files\Tivoli\TSRM

v

(UNIX)

/opt/Tivoli/TSRM

or

/usr/Tivoli/TSRM

When

a

script

is

run:

1.

The

Server

looks

in

its

local

\scripts

directory.

2.

If

the

Server

can

resolve

that

script

name,

it

loads

that

script

and

sends

it

to

the

agent

where

you

designated

the

script

to

be

run.

When

running

a

script

against

a

NAS

filer,

the

script

is

run

from

the

agent

assigned

to

the

filesystem

where

the

triggering

condition

occurred.

3.

The

agent

receives

the

script,

names

it

as

a

temporary

file,

and

runs

it.

4.

After

the

agent

has

finished

running

the

script,

the

temporary

file

is

deleted.

How

the

Server

and

Agent

Resolve

Script

Names

An

IBM

Server

processes

requests

for

both

UNIX

and

Windows

agents.

When

associating

and

running

scripts

with

triggered

and

scheduled

actions,

the

Server

resolves

the

names

of

those

scripts

based

on

the

following:

1.

the

OS

under

which

an

agent

is

running

2.

how

Enter

the

name

of

a

script

on

the

Script

Name

field

to

associate

that

script

with

the

action

you

want

to

perform.

The

name

of

the

script

you

enter

might

or

might

not

contain

an

extension

(including

an

extension

is

optional).

Depending

on

the

Agent

that

receives

the

script,

the

following

occurs

after

a

triggered

or

scheduled

action

that

contains

a

script

is

run:

v

UNIX

agent.

If

the

specified

script

name

contains

an

extension,

the

agent

ignores

the

extension

and

searches

for

a

file

of

the

same

name

(without

an

extension).

For

example,

if

you

enter

backup.vbs

in

the

Script

Name

field,

a

UNIX

agent

will

search

for

a

file

with

the

name

backup.

If

the

script

exists,

UNIX

will

read

the

first

line

of

the

script

and

use

the

appropriate

interpreter

to

run

the

script.

If

the

file

does

not

exist,

the

triggered

or

scheduled

action

will

not

run

the

script.

v

Windows

agent.

If

the

specified

script

name

contains

an

extension,

the

agent

will

search

for

a

file

of

the

same

name/extension.

For

example,

if

you

enter

backup.vbs

in

the

Script

Name

field,

a

Windows

agent

will

search

for

a

file

with

the

name

backup.vbs.

If

the

script

does

exist,

the

Windows

agent

will

determine

what

interpreter

is

needed

to

run

the

script

based

on

its

extension.

If

the

file

does

not

exist,

the

triggered

or

scheduled

action

will

not

run

the

script.

If

the

specified

script

name

does

not

contain

an

extension,

a

Windows

agent

will

look

for

the

file

name

in

the

following

order

(based

on

its

extension):

.com,

.exe,

.bat,

.cmd,

.vbs,

.vbe,

.js,

.jse

The

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager’s

process

for

script

name

resolving

enables

you

to

run

scripts

with

the

same

name

across

multiple

operating

systems.

To

run

a

script

on

both

a

UNIX

and

Windows

operating

systems,

you

must

have

two

versions

of

that

file

on

either

the

Server

or

the

Agent.

For

example,

if

you

want

to

run

a

provisioning

script

against

a

UNIX

and

Windows

agent,

you

must

have

two

versions

of

that

file

(provision.bat

and

provision)

stored

in

the

\scripts

directory

on

either

the

server

or

agent.

Running

scripts

in

response

to

an

Alert

When

you

define

an

Alert,

you

can

define

a

script

to

be

run

when

the

triggered

condition

is

met.

1.

Check

Run

Script

on

the

Alert

tab.

2.

Press

Define.

The

Specify

Script

dialog

box

displays.

3.

Enter

the

name

of

the

script

in

the

Script

Name

field.

Note:

This

script

name

is

used

to

tell

the

Server

what

script

to

send

to

the

agent.

If

the

script

sent

by

the

Server

is

run

by

the

agent,

the

name

of

the

script

will

not

be

the

name

you

specify

in

the

Script

Name

field.

Instead,

the

agent

names

the

script

as

temporary

file,

runs

it,

then

deletes

it

after

the

script

has

run.

Because

of

this,

you

should

not

have

code

in

your

script

that

depends

on

this

script

name.

4.

Specify

where

you

want

the

script

to

run

in

the

Where

to

Run

field.

You

can

select

a

specific

agent,

or

the

triggering

computer.

For

example,

if

a

constraint

is

violated

on

a

filesystem

on

a

specific

machine,

you

would

typically

want

the

script

to

run

the

machine

that

triggered

the

constraint

violation.

(For

some

types

of

alerts

such

as

Job

Failed,

you

will

not

have

the

option

to

run

the

script

on

the

triggering

computer.

Here

you

can

run

the

script

on

any

agent

you

choose.)

Note:

If

you

want

to

run

script

against

a

filesystem

on

a

NAS

filer,

you

must

select

the

agent

that

is

assigned

to

the

filesystem

from

this

field.

Reporting

The

Reporting

of

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

allows

you

to

view

both

overview

and

detailed

information

about

your

storage.

The

over

300

reports

available

in

IBM

Tivoli

Storage

Resource

Manager

are

constructed

from

the

statistical

information

accumulated

in

the

enterprise

repository.

The

reporting

features

are

very

powerful,

allowing

you

to

select

exactly

the

computers,

disks,

file

systems,

and

even

users

upon

which

you

want

to

report.

You

can

view

reports

as

tables

of

data

or

as

graphical

charts,

which

provides

you

with

the

flexibility

to

get

a

very

detailed

look

at

your

or

a

very

high

overview.

Reporting

Use

reporting

of

resources

within

a

For

example,

you

can

create

a
