Nanomedicine: Bold Agenda, three major thrust enabled by macromoleculartherapeutics and therapeutic carriers
Nano-
medicine
Cancer research Infectious Disease Aging related diseasesLeverage polymer chemistry expertise
to encapsulate, deliver and releasetherapeutics: efficacious delivery andsynergistic delivery to mitigate tumor
and tumor stem cells to prevent metastasis.Broad impact across many institutes and
hospitals in Cambridge
Drug resistant bacteria and biofilms are
two of the grand challenges of this decade.Central to this challenge is the developmentof macromolecular therapeutics that preclude
resistance. Moreover, since the advent of virusessuch as Ebola, Marburg, Chikungunya, IBM has
developed novel strategies to prevent suchInfections and mitigate resistance development.
Aging associated diseases are pervasive and
include cardiovascular disease, arthritis, cataracts, type 2 diabetes and brain relatedsuch as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
IBM will leverage technologies developedfrom thrust 1 and 2 to enable drug delivery
across the blood-brain-barrier and to treat heartdisease, arthritis, hip and knee replacements.
36 nm
IBM will bring expertise in polymer chemistry and bioinformatics to address critical issuesassociated with encapsulation, transport, targeting and delivery of biologics, drugs and genes toaddress the demanding needs of the industry
Loaded nanoparticlesnavigate the blood-brain-
Barrier (Alzheimer’s etc)

Key antimicrobial challenges for agricultureCitrus greening- Candidatus Liberibacter
Huanglongbing “yellow dragon disease”Largely seen in Asia until 2004 – first reportin Western hemisphere in Brazil
Symptoms• Yellow shoots• Twig dieback• Mottling and chlorosis• Reduced fruit size and quality• Bitter fruit, low juice yield
Transmission of Candidatus liberibactera • Citrus psyllid during phloem feeding• Plant grafts
Current treatment:• Eradication and replacement
• Thermotherapy of graftwood• Chemotherapy with tetracycline or penicillin• Vector control with dimethoate, carbofuran,
methomyl, or malathion sprays
