The world’s population is constantly growing. By 2050 there will be an estimated further two billion people bringing the total up to nine billion. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) says that agricultural productivity needs to increase by 70 percent by 2050. At the same time, arable land the size of a football pitch is being lost every minute due to soil erosion and urbanization. We need to produce more food without using more arable land, water, fertilizer or crop protection products.

The question of what contribution our company can make to sustainably producing enough food for a growing world population, has been occupying us for some time. In our Good Growth Plan (see page 22 and 23) we have integrated our many years of experience and initiatives into our business model and set ourselves six ambitious and measurable tar-gets to be reached by 2020.

Preserving areas of arable land, strengthening rural communi-ties and promoting plant and resource efficiency are of imme-diate importance. The achievement of these targets will be assessed by third parties.

Introduction

Syngenta in Switzerland

- We would like a pragmatic debate in Switzerland and a genuine examination of the challenge of global food security. Our country must preserve its farmland and optimize yield in order to make its contribution to sustainable food production, even if at the moment we can import much of what we con-sume.

- We need unbiased cooperation of all parties involved. We will develop our partnerships with local farmers, universities and research institutes, as well as other organizations in Switzerland, and seek new partnerships. - The framework conditions are decisive for Syngenta: For a company operating internationally and resident in Switzer-land, which relies on innovation performance, it is crucial that Switzerland offers a pro-business and pro-research environ-ment and an internationally competitive regulatory framework also for multinationals. The central pillars of Swiss economic policy are under political debate, but Switzerland has excel-lent potential to remain an attractive location for Swiss and international companies. Only a productive working relation-ship between decisionmakers and companies to preserve the framework conditions will ensure future investment. Kaisten

Kaisten is home to one of the global facilities for Production & Supply. The highly automated monoplant produces large quantities of an important crop protection ingredient and runs 24/7 shifts. The geographical proximity to the Münchwilen site and the research center in Stein facilitate close coopera-tion and shared expertise.

Monthey is one of Syngenta’s strategic production sites. It manufactures herbicides, fungicides and insecticides to protect the world’s most important crops, including cotton, rice, cereals and citrus fruits. Monthey also covers the pro-duction of intermediates and actives, their formulation and packaging as well as the development of new products through to production maturity.

The research center in Stein is one of Syngenta’s three most important global facilities for Research and Development. In addition to the detection and biological characterization of new insecticide, fungicide and nematicide ingredients, the main focus is on the scientific monitoring of our crop protec-tion products on the market. Researchers in Stein also evalu-ate the robustness of new seed lines and the effectiveness of our products to protect plants from abiotic stress. Chemistry, Biology, Seedcare and Seeds are all located in Stein creating an interactive research campus.

One of the Münchwilen site’s main functions is the integrated development of chemical processes and products. Sample dispatch ensures that these developmental products are available on time for field trials, toxicological studies and registrations around the world.

The demo fields offer farmers the chance to form their own opinion of our integrated solutions. These include, for exam-ple, seeds for hybrid barley, corn, sugar beet, oilseed rape and sunflowers, as well as the corresponding range of crop protection products for these crops – all combined in the demo fields and applied in practice.

The Swiss sales representatives are more than happy to advise their customers, the farmers, on site and use the demo fields as a new module of communication for exchang-ing information. Demo field events and demonstrations will be organized from spring 2014.

The health and safety of employees and customers as well as environmental protection (HSE) are crucial to Syngenta and our sustainability. This fundamental idea is firmly anchored in the code of ethics and the relevant HSE guidelines and standards. Syngenta also expects its suppliers to comply with clearly defined HSE standards and monitors this very closely.

Humanity is facing its greatest challenge. Every day, our planet wakes with 200,000 more mouths to feed and more farmland lost to erosion. Many people who produce the world’s food are living in poverty, while biodiversity is disap-pearing fast. We have only one planet, and we’re using its resources 50% faster than it can take.

We commit to make a measurable contribution to helping farmer overcome six major challenges by 2020:

One planet. Six commitments.

Good Growth Plan

Make crops more efficient

by increasing the average productivity of the world’s major crops by 20% without using more land, water or inputs.

Rescue more farmland

by improving the fertility of 10 million hectares of farmland on the brink of degra-dation.

Help biodiversity flourish

by enhancing biodi-versity on 5 million hectares of farmland.

But we can’t do it alone. We know we don’t have all the answers. So we’re going to work with growers, governments,NGOs and others who share this agenda. We’re also going to report on our progress on our website.

If you would like to work with us to achieve our targets please email us at [email protected]

We commit to make a measurable contribution to helping farmer overcome six major challenges by 2020:

Empower smallholders by reaching 20 millionsmallholders and enabling them to increase productivity by 50%.

Help people stay safe by training 20 million farm workers on labor safety, especially in developing countries.

Look after every worker

by striving for fair labor conditions throughout our entire supply chain network.
