July/August 2013 Volume 44 No.5
Ive been reading a lot
lately about the Millennials,
the so-called, Me, Me, Me
Generation as cleverly phrased
by Joel Stein in a recent Timearticle.Millennials, bornbetween
1980-2000, are popularly known
for their exacerbated sense of
self-esteem. Millennials are
broadlycharacterizedasbeingthe
entitled,trophycollecting,multi-
tasking, Instagram, Facebook,
Twitter, texting generation. Oh,
and also, Millennials are proud,
self-involved people who have
a tighter relationship with their
screens then they dowith actual
people.Ouch!Thatscold!
But,we canhardlyblame
them for letting the power of
technology get to their heads. I
mean, they started revolutions
on Facebook that will change
a countrys history, they have
standardizedtheuseofanagrams
such as LOL and OMG, and
onlytheycanmakeanInstagram

more likes than the mom who
bakedthem!
So if this is a generation
thatcareslittleaboutanyoneother
thanthemselves,whatwillhappen
to our community in the future?
Will this generation appreciate
andunderstandthevaluesofour
heritage well enough to pass itforward to the next generation?
These types of questions come
up all the time at our IAOGH
meetings,and,wearenottheonly
ones concerned. Almost every
Indian association seems to be
concernedaboutthefutureoftheir
respectivecommunity.Allofusare

Yes, it is.The truth is the
Millenials are not self-absorbed
and disengaged.Infact, theyare
quitetheopposite.Everygenera-
tionbeforethemhasbeenaccused
of being too self-indulgent and
proudbut theyhaveall left their
mark in history as theoneswho
found a better way to do things
thanthegenerationbeforetheirs.
Also, lets be real, everyone in
their20sand30sisself-absorbed
atonetimeoranother!
But,wehumans,bynature,
constantly need to x things that
arent really broken. Its called

that made us homebound so

are redening the meaning o

Indiancommunitythatmigrated
to the US back in the 70s and
80s came from an India that
hadnt seentruecapitalism.The
US was literally a whole new
world for them. Since so many
of us were in the same starting
position, we sought comfort in
our communities. People from
perhaps the same part of India,

But, the next generation
of Indians, kids who wereeither born or raised here have
