• Eligibility requirements for most of ORED’s internal awards: Applicants must be full-time (1.0 FTE) UNL faculty members on a continuous appointment (tenure-leading or tenured, with a rank of assistant professor or above), or a research (assistant/associate/full) professor or senior lecturer/professor of practice on the payroll of UNL. Faculty with part-time appointments, visiting and adjunct appointees and other lecturer ranks are not eligible to apply.
• UNL faculty can be awarded only one internal award as a PI in any academic year, and may not receive more than two internal grants as PI over any four-year period. Please read the complete RFA for each competition to make sure you meet the eligibility requirements.

Research Council Awards

For projects that promote a faculty member’s research, creative and scholarly activities that may or may not enhance the prospects for obtaining outside support.
– Preference will be given to non-tenured early-career faculty. – Awards up to $7,500 for individual applications and up to
$10,000 for joint applications.– Application deadline: 2nd Friday in October each year.
Research Council Grants-in-Aid

Awards designed for projects that encourage and enhance research, creative and scholarly activities, and enhance the prospects of obtaining outside, competitive external funding.
– Preference will be given to non-tenured early-career faculty. – Awards up to $10,000.– Application deadline: 2nd Friday in October each year.
Research Council Faculty Seed Grants
OFFICE OF RESEARCH AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
The goal is to enhance the competitiveness of applications from interdisciplinary teams for external funding.
– Awards up to $20,000.– However, in an effort to encourage ambitious proposals and
truly multi-disciplinary initiatives, the Research Council will accept requests for larger amounts of funding.
– Application deadline: 2nd Friday in October each year.
RC Interdisciplinary Grants
OFFICE OF RESEARCH AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Support for distinguished invited scholars who appeal to and interact with a large interdisciplinary segment of the university community.
– The speaker must be distinguished in his or her field. – The program must include at least one lecture that is open,
free-of-charge and advertised to the entire University community.
– Funds may be used for travel and local expenses for featured speakers and/or honorarium.
– Awards up to $3,000.– 2nd Friday in October each year AND the 2nd Friday in March.
RC Distinguished Lecturer
OFFICE OF RESEARCH AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Visiting scholars who are recognized for excellence in their fields and whose research and scholarly activities are closely related to the research interests of the faculty and graduate students at UNL.
– Each visitor is to give at least one lecture that is open free-of-charge and advertised to the entire University community.
– Awards up to $800.– 2nd Friday in October each year AND the 2nd Friday in March.
Research Council Visiting Scholar
OFFICE OF RESEARCH AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Support for outstanding invited scholars who will give symposia or colloquia that should be of interest to a large interdisciplinary segment of the university community.
– The program must include at least one lecture that is open, free-of-charge and advertised to the entire University community.
– Applicants must be able to secure other funds to cover a portion of the budgeted expenses.
– Awards up to $3,000.– 2nd Friday in October each year AND the 2nd Friday in March.
Research Council Symposia

Enhance the competitiveness of faculty submitting grant proposals requesting R01 (research project grant) support for biomedical research funding from the National Institutes of Health.
– Awards up to $50,000. – Letters of Intent are due November 2, 2015. – Full proposal and draft of R01 application are due December 1,
2015.
Spring deadline: – Letters of Intent are due March 1, 2016. – Full proposal and draft of R01 application are due April 1,
2016.
Biomedical Seed Grant
OFFICE OF RESEARCH AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
• Layman Seed Awards– Provides funding for new projects by non-tenured junior
faculty. – Awards up to $10,000. – Application deadline: 2nd Friday in November of each year.
• Layman New Direction– Provides funding for tenured faculty (associate/full
professors) who are re-entering research or branching into a new direction.
– Awards up to $10,000. – Application deadline: 2nd Friday in November of each year.
Layman Awards

Faculty should present their long-term plan for creative activity/research, and specifically describe how the project will lead to external funding, including a targeted plan for external funding applications.
– Projects involving collaborations between Arts and Humanities faculty and faculty outside the Arts and Humanities are encouraged.
– Awards up to $10,000 with a minimum 25% match required from the PI’s department and/or college.
– Application deadline: 2nd Friday in November of each year.
Arts & Humanities Research Enhancement Program
OFFICE OF RESEARCH AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Foster or support interdisciplinary research teams at UNL and enhance their competitiveness for large-scale or center grants.
– Awards up to $10,000. – Four application deadlines per year:
• 2nd Friday in December; • 1st Friday in March; • 1st Friday in June and • 2nd Friday in September.
Pathway to Interdisciplinary Research Centers – Phase I: Planning Grant
OFFICE OF RESEARCH AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Designed to enhance the competitiveness of faculty revising and resubmitting grant proposals by providing developmental and/or financial support to help improve highly meritorious, but previously unfunded federal funding proposals that are eligible for resubmission.
– Faculty must contact Nathan Meier at 402-472-3902 or [email protected] to see if you qualify for this award before submitting an application.
– Two award levels: • For previous proposal requests that were less than $500,000,
awards up to $25,000 will be given. • For previous proposal requests that were $500,000 or more,
awards up to $50,000 will be given. – Applications accepted on a rolling basis.
