I wish / If only + subject + Past Perfect Tense
expresses regret for a past situation or action:
I wish (that)/ If only I hadn't eaten so much.
I wish (that) / If only our flight hadn't been delayed!
I wish (that) / If only you had been here with us yesterday.

To express a wish in the present or in the future.

To complain about a behaviour that you disapprove or
To express impatience, annoyance or dissatisfaction with a present or future
action. I wish (that) / If only you would call more often!

To simply express that you want something to happen in the future (not
talking about wanting an action or situation to be different, and not talking about
impatience or annoyance) we use 'hope', not 'wish‘:
I hope it won’t rain tomorrow.
I hope you’ll call me soon.
