evie’s story as told by her Mom

Evie is always saying, “I win!” She always feels she wins, even when she loses.

Evie was born with a lot of problems. Her esophagus didn’t connect with her stomach. Doctors used part of her intestine to make an esophagus, but her stomach still sits in her chest.

When we came to Ranken Jordan, I was still shell shocked. I was young. I was scared to touch her. I didn’t even know what a trach was.

Before we went to Ranken Jordan, I was told Evie would never walk. Evie started walking at Ranken Jordan.

They told me Evie would never talk. Evie started talking at Ranken Jordan.

We were invited to the grand opening of the new facility six years ago. I thought it was great, because I look at it like there are other kids who have it a lot harder than Evie. Now Ranken Jordan could do more for even more kids and families.

They said Evie wouldn’t make it to five. She’s ten now. passion.

She was among Ranken Jordan’s first three patients on a ventilator or breathing machine. We affectionately called Evie, Kaylie and Aniya our Powerpuff Girls. Their success paved the way for us to serve many of the complex kids who come to us today. Evie recently had her “trach” — or tracheostomy breathing tube — removed.

I had to learn to walk again.

The nursing staff is unbelievable. In the regular hospital, they come into the room, give you your medicine and leave.

The point of Ranken Jordan is to get out of your room. It was easier to get on the right track when I wasn’t cooped up in a bed all day.

If not for Ranken Jordan, I don’t think I would have been walking in less than two months.

I was trapped in the car for two hours while they tried to get me out. I was awake the whole time.

Because I was aware of what was going on, that memory, that hauntingness, just sat with me and sat with me and sat with me.

Dr. L’Ecuyer, the psychiatrist at Ranken Jordan, didn’t force anything. She listened to what I had to say. And she helped me understand that what I have is normal for a person who experienced what I experienced.

She helped me feel that it’s ok to be sad once in a while.

Her parents told us, “When Cecilia started singing and playing the guitar, we knew she was going to be OK. She’s like a canary — if she’s not singing there’s something wrong.” Cecilia was expected to be at Ranken Jordan for up to six months. She went home in six and a half weeks.

It’s about survival for a lot of our families.

I’ve seen kids end up right back in the hospital when they got discharged directly from acute care to home. It’s a whole different feeling when they leave Ranken Jordan. The kids are ready. The parents are ready. You can see it.

At Ranken Jordan, we know that keeping the family close is one of the things that helps kids heal. It’s really rewarding to see a family together instead of a family separated.

Some of these parents may have been doubted, but at Ranken Jordan, we see the possibilities. I look at some of the things our parents do, like changing a trach, and I’m amazed. They become almost like little health care professionals.

To be there for the kids, social worker Ashley Rodemann does whatever it takes to help find resources for families who are often emotionally, physically and financially drained. She considers offering that support to parents and their children to be an honor.

As we celebrate six years in our new space

(I won’t call it a hospital, because it’s so

much more), this is a good time to look

back, measure and reflect on what we’ve

accomplished together.

Our kids are the ones who not very long ago

wouldn’t have survived. From brain injuries to

preemies, they are among the sickest and most

complex patients to treat. Every one of them

comes to us with a unique set of challenges

and a common need to be a kid.

There is not a cookie cutter case in the bunch.

But then, we’re not about cookie cutter methods

of treatment.

In another piece of exciting news, the

Mike Matheny Catch 22 Foundation has pledged

to help Ranken Jordan build its very own

Field of Dreams, a multipurpose athletic field

with wheelchair access.

Outside these walls, we are recognized for

our level of care. Our physical medicine and

rehabilitation doctors now provide consultation

services for Cardinal Glennon. Washington

University is talking to us about starting a

residency program for physical medicine

and rehabilitation. We received honors from

the St. Louis Regional Chamber & Growth

Association (RCGA) and the Missouri Chamber

of Commerce this year. And, after taking a tour,

a representative from the Medicaid and CHIP

Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC)

noted our innovative model of care.

We’re also very proud to rank 5th in the nation

for overall job satisfaction among clients,

including hospitals, surveyed by HR Solutions.

We firmly believe that our shared passion for

this work affects healing.

When we opened the doors to our new facility,

we never expected that we would be running at

taken a tour yet, I invite you to come. We love

showing off Ranken Jordan and our kids just

plain love showing off.

Dr. Holekamp invented the term “beyond the

bedside” for the care we give. It’s about getting

kids out of the hospital bed and back to life. Our

whole building is therapy space and we use every

inch of it: the indoor and outdoor playground,

community areas, places for activities that

engage and challenge — even if they’re done

from a wheelchair or sometimes a bed on wheels.

The results have been spectacular for many

of our kids. But we’re also about families.

We support our families in everything from

learning how to meet their child’s physical needs

to coordinating care after they go home.

This year’s stories show just how important

their families are to our kids’ recovery.

Mental health is also a huge component in

healing. This year, in addition to our two full-time

physical medicine and rehabilitation doctors,

we’ve added a psychiatrist, Dr. Suzanne L’Ecuyer.

operated near full census with a waiting list that

often stretches to 15 – 25 kids. In addition to

the 233 families served on an inpatient basis,

this year we served over 331 families in our

outpatient program. We are using literally every

inch of our space.

As a society, we save more and more kids.

We cannot then abandon them. It’s time for us

to expand our vision.

Our kids face medical issues that will stay

with them their whole lives. I can’t say it enough:

the acute care hospitals save lives.

We give our kids a life.

What shape our growth will take and the time

in which it will unfold are issues still to be

decided. In order to fulfill our mission of being

there for every child who needs us, we know

we need to serve more kids. We know we

need to prove the model and make it available

everywhere it’s needed.

The issues of health care policy today make

everything that much more complex. What I tell

people is, it doesn’t matter. We will continue to
