SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER ST. NICHOLAS CHURCH – MAY 17, 2020 From the Pastor’s Desk

Today is the Sixth Sunday of Easter. These are very

strange times for us. By and large I think we have

been doing rather well so far. There is a light at the end of the

tunnel. We are moving to a cautionary end but we still have some

restrictions with which we will have to deal. There are some

restrictions that need to be enforced and which we will take into

consideration.

At the beginning of the week I had no concrete

plans. However, we have received communications about our

reopening. Before I get to the restrictions for the return weekend

of Pentecost let me ease our way into this. The very first

consideration we need to focus on is our common sense. God has

blessed us with good brains to figure things out. Good judgement

is first. Your health is a priority. It has always been Catholic

practice in regards to our obligations, and in particular our Sunday

attendance as mass. With these obligations there are also

exceptions to the rule. This is where your good judgement comes

into play. If you are sick or have a serious health condition, the

obligation is lifted. This is not a guessing game. It is good

common sense. Interestingly enough this is a matter of respect to

God for the good brains with which God has blessed us. As always,

if you are sick you are not obligated to attend Sunday Mass. Now,

considering the pandemic, if you are sick or have a serious health

condition that has weakened your resistance to germs, etc. you are

not obligated to attend. This is a basic principle and compliments

you’re good reasoning: a gift from God.

To make things even easier this statement

was mandated to easy your minds. “Bishop Brennan dispenses

the Catholic faithful who reside in the Diocese of Columbus and

all other Catholics currently in its territories from the

obligation of attending Sunday Mass until September 13,

2020.” Considering your good judgement and the Bishop’s

declaration should put your minds at ease. If you do not feel safe,

you are not obliged to attend.

The second item here with our planning on opening public

masses for the last weekend of May is that we have also been given

the go ahead for weekday masses. Therefore, on Monday, May

25th we will restart weekday public masses. This is a good

opportunity for a trial run. It should also be noted that Monday

May 25th is Memorial Day.

With this in mind we need to be patient and flexible as we

get this in motion. If you do not feel comfortable coming to

Sunday mass, and plan not to attend, why not give it a try with a

weekday mass. As with the Sunday gathering of the community,

we are still expected to keep our distances, washing our hands,

wearing a face mask, etc. Using common sense, families are not

required to keep safe-distancing: I suspected that they came to

church together in the same car from the same home. This only

makes sense. We will also be conscientious about wiping the

church doors and pews. We will remain conscious of all

the surfaces that are touched. I am sure you will be aware as well.

Again, with this in mind, there will also be something that

will be strikingly noticeable. We have removed all the Missalettes

and hymnals from the Church for the time being. Again,

this guidance was given to us with the concern about the number of

surfaces that people touch.

You will also notice at the beginning of the mass that I

will not be processing from the back of the church. I will enter the

sanctuary from the sacristy alone. You will also notice that I will

not be having altar servers. I will be leading and saying the

prayers for the mass from the altar. At the end of mass, I will not

be processing to the back of the church.

During the mass you will notice that we will not be having

an offertory procession with the gifts of bread and wine. You will

also notice that there not be an offertory collection. I’m sure you

just caught that! This does not mean that we will not have a way

for you to make your offertory contribution. We will have baskets

available for your contributions at the doors of the Church. We are

still figuring out how this will look.

When it is time for communion you will have to be very

patient since distancing will be an issue and communion stations

will be another issue. The reception of Holy Communion in the

hand is strongly encouraged. I know that there are many who still

prefer to receive communion on the tongue, however we need a

little give and take here. Out of consideration for the minister of

Holy Communion please receive the Eucharist on the hand. Also,

no gloves are to be worn at communion time. In fact, my sense is

that we really should not be wearing gloves in church in the first

place. If anything, gloves prevent exposure for the individual but

they do not prevent exposure for others. In fact, my sense is that

they spread whatever is on the surface. Think about this, a doctor

or nurses do not wear the same gloves from one patient to

another. They change gloves between every patient. Just the same,

at this point I am figuring this out and will most likely give

instructions before mass about this and other bits of information.

There has been the practice of some people like to join

hands with their neighbor during the praying of the Our

Father. This is discouraged. However, using our common sense if

families wish to continue this practice that is fine. Thus, it goes

without saying the “Sign of Peace” is omitted.

In the meantime, we will do the best we can to keep you

informed. I know people are ready to return to church. There is

also that hunger to return to the Eucharist. We need to be nourished

in our faith and this nourishment comes to us in Word and

Sacrament. This is our encounter with the Lord that transforms our

lives and strengthens us to be his living presence in the world: the

Christian Community.

One of the reflections that I have had during this Easter

Season was based on the promise of Jesus to his disciples. He tells

them that he is returning to the Father and will come back to take

them with him to the place he has prepared for them. Jesus came

back as the Resurrected Lord: eternally alive. He continues to

come back to us to bring us to the place he has prepared for

us. Jesus Christ does this in His Church and her Sacraments. He

comes to us in the Church and the Sacraments to lead us to the place

he has prepared for us. The Church and the Sacraments are

essential for our salvation because they are our encounters with

Christ in this world. Our encounter with Christ leads us to the place

he has prepared for us which is the perfect encounter we have in

Heaven. With the imagery from the Book of Revelation, Christ the

Bridegroom has prepared his Bride (the Church) and presents her

to the Father entering into the eternal marriage banquet of

heaven. In a very basic and serious consideration, we cannot

be who we say we are, Catholic Christians, without the Church and

the Sacraments.

We have a hunger for the Eucharist. We have a hunger

for the Lord. It is very important for us then to do whatever

we need to do in order to return to the Eucharistic Celebration.

God Bless you and have a Great Week.

ELECTRONIC CONTRIBUTIONS

St. Nicholas Church has a convenient way to make your regular

offerings. With our electronic giving program, you can easily set

up a recurring giving schedule. We encourage you to set up a

schedule of recurring contributions. It’s convenient for you and

provides much-needed consistency for our church. If you are

currently giving on a weekly basis, you will no longer need to write

out 52 checks a year or prepare 52 envelopes. Even when travel,

illness or other circumstances prevent you from attending services,

our church will continue to receive your contributions on an

uninterrupted basis. To become an electronic giver, call or visit the

church website, https://stnickparish.org/for a brief form to fill out.

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

O Mary,

You shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope.

We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick,

who, at the foot of the cross, were united with Jesus’ suffering,

and persevered in your faith. “Protectress of the Roman people”,

you know our needs, and we know that you will provide,

so that, as at Cana in Galilee,

joy and celebration may return after this time of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the

Father and to do what Jesus tells us.

For he took upon himself our suffering, and burdened himself with our sorrows

to bring us, through the cross, to the joy of the Resurrection.

Amen. We fly to your protection,

O Holy Mother of God; Do not despise our petitions

in our necessities,

but deliver us always from every danger,

O Glorious and Blessed Virgin.
