By Thomas Muhammad

I hadn't driven from Dallas to Selma in maybe eight years, but it was the way I had chosen to take this historical trip. It had been after all 50 years since that infamous terroristic attack when white racist police storm troopers beat and gassed 600 innocent unarmed peaceful civil rights marchers crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

During my drive I played over a dozen speeches of Brother Malcolm X driving to Selma and back to Dallas ending with his "Last Message" speech, which turned out to be the most powerful presentation Malcolm ever made because it came 17 days after he had spoken to over 500 people at Brown Chapel Church in Selma, Alabama and one day after his home had been firebombed while he, his wife Betty and their four young daughters slept on a snowy night.

This speech brings the righteous movement of black people in America then and now more into focus.

Over the years I've found that only by listening to Malcolm's speeches in their "entirety" can you really get a full sense of where we were and where we should be going as a people in America. A few simple damn quotes like "By Any Means Necessary" will do the job. In fact, I maintain that it is because today we don't have a "Malcolm voice speaking on the national level" the masses of black people are very clearly in such disarray. I totally cringed recently when I read a column written by one of these so-called "high profile Negroes" basically trying to turn Malcolm into some type of passivist, because Malcolm talked of seeing white people during his pilgrimage to Mecca.

This is pure nonsense! Malcolm lived and died a black nationalist before and after Mecca. Any idiot listening to his speeches after that trip, up until he was assassinated by some lost government-inspired conspiracy, jealous-minded "wish I was this awesome" Negroes would

know this! We demand that you colored folks who feel there's something about Malcolm's fire that you like, but don't want to jeopardize friendships with your white friends or lose your corporate jobs, please don't try and milk toast Malcolm in attempts to make your white "friends" amenable to him.

Hell, just get some new friends or move to a black area. Just simply back the hell off and leave Malcolm alone, thank you! Back to the Selma trip.

I must be honest however, and say I really hadn't wanted to make this particular trip, even though I had come each year for over 15 years as a member of the Executive Board of the National Voting Rights Museum & Institute in Selma. I knew it was going to be a moment filled with trivial "pomp & circumstance" and it was.

But since our group hosts this annual "Jubilee" event which highlights all the told and untold history leading up to that fateful Sunday, March 7, 1965 when those heroic marchers were beaten, I had a duty to come.

While I'm on the subject letme point out that among those

600 people beaten on that bridge were 72 white marchers. A couple of them serve on our board. Many people have made the mistake of quoting that "600 black marchers were beaten" which is not true. That said, after getting into Selma I made sure to revisit all of the places where I knew members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) did movement work; places like

Lowdnes County where the Black Panther Party was founded. The famous "Tent City" area along Highway 80 where

black sharecroppers sought refuge after being evicted by white landowners simply because they registered to vote. The marker where New Yorker and march volunteer Viola Liuzzo was killed by

members of the Ku Klux Klan for giving a ride to a black teenage male who had marched from Selma to Montgomery. Years later it was discovered that an FBI informant

was riding in the car when the Klan shot Ms. Liuzzo. Her passenger, Leroy Motten, a member of SNCC at the time who quickly smeared some of Ms. Liuzzo's blood on himself and played dead was sent out of Selma by his parents

because they feared he would be found out and killed.

Brother Leroy is still alive living in New York and refuses to return to his hometown of Selma.

Yeah I know I sound too militant when talking about Selma and that many are looking for stories of the happy jubilant faces seen on television and on the front pages of newspapers.

But like Malcolm would say "I'm not the kind of person whose going to tell you what you want to hear, I'm gonna to tell you the truth whether you like it or not!"The Struggle Continues...

By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

Loretta Lynch, the president’s nominee to replace Eric Holder as the U.S. Attorney General, is poised to become the first African American woman to lead the Justice Department. Ms. Lynch is a Harvard-educated lawyer with a reputation as a tough prosecutor.

Her impeccable record includes the successful prosecutions of high profile public corruption and civil rights cases, as well as cases

in which public officials were physically assaulted. Since the events of 9/11, her office has been responsible for the conviction of individuals involved in plotting terrorist attacks against this country. Time and time again, Ms. Lynch has demonstrated a commitment to keeping Americans safe. She has performed her job effectively, and without grandstanding. It is time for the Senate to do the same.

The U.S. Constitution grants the Senate the power to provide “advice and consent” regarding Presidential appointments. This role of the Senate in confirming presidential appointees is an important one. Historically, Senators will question a nominee on their record, and press them on important matters to determine if the nominee is qualified to advise the president.

The Senate has already determined, on two separate occasions, that Ms. Lynch is a prosecutor with impeccable character and expertise. She has been confirmed by the Senate twice as

U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York under President Clinton in 2000, and again under President Obama in 2010. During her most recent Senate confirmation hearing Ms. Lynch performed admirably. She endured hours of grueling questions concerning her legal record, her views on immigration, limits to the president’s executive authority, and a host of other legal issues she may encounter as the nation’s top law enforcement official.

Ms. Lynch has the necessary qualifications to be our nation’s next Attorney General. From her stellar record as a federal prosecutor, to her prestigious academic pedigree, her experiences have prepared her to enforce and uphold both the letter and the spirit of the United States Constitution at the highest level. Shamefully, Senate Republicans are holding her confirmation hostage as they continue the battle over the president’s immigration policies.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell indicated that there would not be a confirmation vote for

Ms. Lynch until the Senate finishes its debate over an anti-trafficking bill, which has been slowed by a fight over an abortion provision. Yet again, Senate Republicans are using Ms. Lynch’s confirmation as political leverage for an unrelated matter. This is no way to govern.

America has waited far too long for a new attorney general to be confirmed while justice hangs in the balance. The time has come for the Senate to act. There has been no substantive criticism of Ms. Lynch’s qualifications. She has worked to earn the support of a majority of the Senate. In fact, the Senate Judiciary Committee has already voted to approve the nomination. Yet the Republican Leadership has refused to bring her nomination to the floor. It is time for the Senate to provide the “advice and consent” that they are constitutionally empowered to give.

JOHNSON: Ms. Lynch must be con!rmed as AG

Eddie Bernice Johnson represents Texas’ 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. She is the !rst registered nurse elected to the US Congress.

May God bless and keep you always…

"Our people have made the mistake of confusing the methods with the objectives. As long as we agree on objectives, we should never fall out with each other just because we believe in different methods, or tactics, or strategy. We have to keep in mind at all times that we are not fighting for separation. We are fighting for recognition as free humans in this society."

Street named for Elsie Faye Heggins

On Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2015 the Dallas City Council approved renaming about three miles of Hatcher Street in South Dallas for Mrs. Elsie Heggins, a political organizer remembered for helping to open doors at City Hall, holding weekly town hall meetings to review and discuss the upcoming council agenda with the community, refusing to bow down to the power elite and training a whole new cadre of fearless leader/servants to work for poor and marginalized families in the City.

On Saturday, March 14, 2015 family, friends and long time supporters gathered on the corner of Malcolm X and Hatcher Street (across from Lincoln High) for the renaming ceremony.

I am so utterly pissed off right now. And don't even try to act like you're offended because I used the words pissed off when you’ve just been publicly pissed on. Once again y'all let a group of kids from Dallas lead a clan that punked you. They call you a Nigga in your face, and then you have the nerve to chide me for using “pissed off.”

What upsets me more than anything else is that this news story about Sigma Alpha Epsilon took me away from what I had planned for this week. My full intent was to tell you how much I love Tracee Ellis Ross. You know she’s the lead actress in “black/-ish” who was also the lead actress in “Girlfriends.”

Let me say parenthetically that I am not in love with Tracee Ellis Ross because she's light-skinned-ed, or because she has that big butt that has become so fashionable. I can give you three reasons why I love Tracee Ellis

Ross that are neither c o s m e t i c n o r chauvinistic.

First and foremost, I love Tracee because I love her mother Diana Ross; possibly the greatest vocal diva in world history. Secondly, I love Tracee because you rarely see her hair chemically straightened or lengthened with extensions. She's completely comfortable being natural. And finally I just believe that she is an intelligent,

independent, innovative Black woman without excuses or apologies.

I digressed. I must need to create a monologue about these ignorant-assed White boys and how they let their $5 mouths get their million dollar asses entrapped. They got caught reciting what they had been taught. "There will never be a nigger SAE. You can hang him from a tree, but he can never sign

with me. There will never be a nigger SAE." A s I c o n s t a n t l y c o n v e y i n t h i s column, being called a

nigger does not bother me; being treated like a nigger is what angers me. Sadly, there is always ample reason for me to be irascible if not irate. You also shouldn’t be surprised or taken aback that SAE’s campus mother was caught on YouTube spewing the word nigger in

machine gun repetition. Let me clue you in. The “Den

Mother” concept did not begin with the Boy Scouts ; Whi te mothers of vociferous and unrelenting hatred served as Den Mothers to the KKK and to practicing racists long before the Imperial Wizard made his American debut. Don’t be naïve enough to believe that our nation’s legacy of racial hatred is limited to the whims of White males.

As it was portrayed in Django, there were willing women who sewed hoods and sheets for their spiritual soirees.

Unwittingly I found myself agreeing with Dallas Morning News columnist Rudolph Bush. In my own remix, he essentially said you can’t fault the fruit, until you check the roots. We share the belief that the institution of racism is more dangerous than the insults that come as a by-product.

What shattered me was the fact that there are at least 200,000 SAE alumni that have passed this song down for generations. Arguably 20% of SAE’s alums hold corporate decision-making positions for hiring, promotions and minority participation. I'm not saying it's not okay to get outraged when White folks say in public what White folks say in private all the time. I am saying that those sentiments are more dangerous in practice than in pronunciation.

I wanted to discuss this beautiful burgeoning bevy of new Black television shows. But at this point all I can say is that the “Empire” still ain’t “Blackish” and that’s the “Scandal” that allows them to “Get Away with Murder.” Suffice it to say that I love you Tracee and I hope it doesn’t offend you that I’m pissed.

HALL: Can you SAE Pissed Off?

Dear Mr. Attorney General; My name is Miles Jaye Davis, Sr. I am an American citizen, a native of Brooklyn, New York, a proud father and grandfather, a veteran of the United States Air Force and a national recording artist. I was seven years old at the time of Bloody Sunday and the black & white images of that violent day in 1965 are as troubling as ever. While broadcasts of the recent ceremonious festivities commemorating the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, aerial views of the Edmund Pettus Bridge, Congressman John Lewis’ testimonials and President Obama’s passionate speech are compelling and cause for reflection, what concerns me most

is the ongoing question of equal justice in America.I’d like to know if any of the officers who took part in the Bloody Sunday attacks have been investigated, indicted or otherwise brought to justice for the hate crimes committed that day in Selma. Municipal records as well as news footage should help identify the

officers on duty that day who were involved in the brutal attacks. What troubles me deeply is the thought that as I watch the Selma broadcasts, watching right along with me in the comfort of their homes are some of the retired Alabama Troopers, retired Selma Police Officers and local officials who either had a direct hand in the violence of that day or in covering up the actions of those who did.

The thought that they and their families watch the festivities with impunity, secure in the knowledge that they are in no danger of prosecution for their despicable criminal acts is outrageous. That they may be enjoying state pensions and health benefits is absolutely unconscionable as we push harder and farther toward justice in America.I would like to know if a Special Prosecutor can be assigned to investigate the events of that day in spite of the 50 years that have lapsed. Only then can the contempt and bitterness that I feel as I’m reminded of that tragic day in American history begin to dissipate.Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

Arlington, Va.—The National Alliance on Mental Illness and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.® have launched a new partnership to expand mental health education, awareness, and support activities on the campuses of colleges and universities and in local communities.

The partnership will enable NAMI, the nation's largest grassroots mental health organization, and AKA, the nation's oldest sorority founded by African American college-trained women, to prepare new volunteer leaders for the future and reach broader constituencies as part of a growing movement to address unmet mental health needs.

“Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is proud to stand with NAMI in the fight for mental health and wellness,” said Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. “Our members will work to bring attention to mental illness among diverse populations with historically low utilization of mental health services.”

“NAMI and AKA will stand together to provide help and hope,” said

NAMI Executive Director Mary Giliberti. “We are thrilled to be working with one of the nation’s most distinguished service organizations to help individuals and families affected by mental health conditions. Our common mission will include eliminating fear and discrimination that too often discourage people from seeking help when they need it.”

The first year of the partnership will include:

· Participation in each organization’s national conventions: The NAMI National Convention is scheduled for July 4-8 in San Francisco. The AKA Leadership Seminar will be held in Chicago, July 16-19.

· With NAMI’s support, AKA will organize “Launching 1908 Dance Moves for NAMI,” a community awareness event in downtown Chicago on July 16.

· Local NAMI Affiliates and AKA chapters acrossthe country will

come together to sponsor mental health awareness events, such

as AKA/NAMI Awareness Day on April 11 and Mental Illness Awareness Week, October 4-10.

· National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month in July will commemorate a special connection between the two organizations. Congress established the month in 2008 in honor of the late African American novelist, Bebe Moore Campbell, who was both a NAMI member and an AKA honorary member.

· AKA chapters will work with NAMI on Campus clubs at universities and colleges around the country to advance education and support around mental health.

NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization with approximately 1000 state organizations and local affiliates, dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental

illness. For more information, see www.nami.org.

Dear Alma, My husband was laid off after 16

years on the job. My salary alone wasn’t enough to keep up with the bills, so we decided moving in with my mom was the best thing.

She has been having health problems anyway and is in need of care, so this works out for the all of us. My mom was in the hospital a few months back and was talking out of her mind. She told the doctors that I had been mistreating her, which wasn’t true. During that time her best friend and neighbor visited regularly and knew everything that was going on. I’ve know this woman all of my life.

While my mom was in the hospital this friend totally turned on me. I think she was even talking about me to the other neighbors. We had a big falling out about my mom’s care and what was really the truth. It was ugly!

Anyway, I say all this to give you some background because she recently died and my mom wants me to cook and help her family out with her funeral. I’m thinking she must be crazy. Remember this woman has been awful to me, about all I can do is write a check. My friend told me about your column so I thought I’d ask your opinion?

T.B. in the Bahamas

Excuse me T.B., while I sip on my blueberry tea. I wanna make sure I’ve got a hold of all that’s happening in your house – oh wait it isn’t, it’s your mama’s home.

Now that we’ve established authority, I can understand how difficult it is to find your adult-self and your husband, moving in with your mother. You and I both can agree and recognize, clearly it wasn’t ever a part of the game plan. But let’s not be ungrateful for this blessing, at least ya’ll have somewhere to go, so don’t get it twisted. While I can sympathize with your situation (sip, sip, aaahh) hold up, why are we talking about you and your immature issues when you’re mother just lost her dear friend? Since you asked, I gotta tell you ~ this shouldn’t be about you, it’s all about your mama!

Yes, by all means you should help. This woman and your mom have had a

long, loving and valuable friendship over the years. I’m sure, similar to Lucy & Ethel, Florida & Willona, Maary & Rose, you hear what I’m sayin? These women, although on television, lived as neighbors who took great care of each other. When you saw one, you saw the other. They knew each other’s business and everybody else’s business, too, for that matter, LOL.

I too grew up with these friendships beautifully displayed in my old neighborhood. I watched grown women weathering the various storms of life, supporting each other through marriage and children, sometimes divorce, the loss of a child and even widowhood. Can’t you see, your mother is asking this of you because it’s just as if an aunt has died? It’s all the same to her – her best friend was just like family. She loved her and her love for her friend (your play aunt) outweighs anything you can argue, cuss or fuss about. So simmer down, reach for a cup

of compassion, your mother is in a very fragile place, bless her heart. I know I hear you, ya’ll had a fallen out, WHATEVER! Even if your mother was speaking out of her mind, as you say, her friend would only show solidarity towards your mom. That’s just the way it is between friends.

Fall off your high horse before I push you off, forgive that woman for the misunderstanding between the two of you, and let it go. Pick up the phone right now and offer your services to her family. You hear me! Put on your mother’s shoes and pearls, and get to stepping. Don’t you sit down and take your shoes off until the memorial, funeral, wake or whatever is over.

Your mom has lived long enough to know you can’t truly love without giving, and the giving doesn’t have anything to do with money. It’s about giving of your time, offering up support that comes from your heart and unconditional care that isn’t measured. When death takes a loved one, there’s no room for discontent or the holding of a grudge. Your mother is looking to see the best rise out of her daughter, stop acting like a child.

Mind your manners girl, we both know while she was in her right mind, she taught you better. Alma -

There is a perspective prevalent in our faith that our suffering is an integral part of God’s plan to ready us for the struggle of spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. Depending on your point of view you might think that to be a fact of faith. I just don’t believe it’s always true.

However, I do believe suffering in some ways is a prerequisite for strengthening one’s spiritual muscle. Like Jesus in the desert, you do have to get ready for what’s in store for you traveling down God’s path. For me it’s always been hard to respect the opinion of someone who has led the so called “charmed life” or, someone who was born with the proverbial silver spoon in a cavity free mouth.

It’s hard, if not impossible (for me), to listen to someone talk with certainty about things they’ve never seen or places they’ve never been.

My belief is that God teaches in a manner few of us will ever truly understand. I believe that when He chooses you, when it’s your time, He has a unique way of communicating who’s really in charge.

And, if the truth be told, only He is. Experience has taught me that when God is talking to you, eventually you come to know it. Your recognition of this can come with a price, if you get my meaning.

Take notes on this. “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but (rather)

painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.” Hebrews 12:11.

As far as I’m concerned, we’re all in training, believe it or not, to fight in God’s war.

Whether being forged in a fiery furnace or stuck in a tailspin of perceived despair and hopelessness, each one of us is being battle tested in anticipation that one day, we will be called to arms.

This struggle, these experiences, they bring about wisdom; a spiritual wisdom from a spiritual perspective that I believe we are commanded to share. It’s called testimony!

Otherwise, God keeps you in a perpe tua l c lass room where l i fe

constantly gives you a new place to go to the bathroom. You haven’t learned

anything, so life keeps kicking your…well, you get the picture. When you finally realize the one trying to tell you something is God, then a wondrous thing begins to happen.

You listen more intently and learn more eagerly. Like the child who discovers walking leads to the joy of running, or the baby who discovers his own hand, the possibilities seem endless. The mind says ‘tell me more.’ The spirit says, ‘thank you Jesus.’

At that very moment, it my belief that God let’s us know we’re able to withstand, overcome, rise above and win the battle of carrying the message of salvation. Christ is savior.

At that moment, we also move from being in the classroom to being on the battlefield where Satan keeps score.

You remember those days back in school when you actually studied and were prepared for the test? Confidence oozed from you.

When God has been the lesson planner, the study partner, the instructor, it doesn’t matter how much Satan wants it to be a Net Flix Night.

“Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.” James 1:12.

Our job then is to recognize and represent; recognize the hell we think we’re going through has heaven as its reward.

Your struggles are not without purpose. The most important message of the day is to understand who (Jesus) has suffered the most and why.

“It is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the Kingdom.” Luke 12:32. Remember it’s already yours.

May God bless and keep you always.

Jabari Johnson, a former college and professional basketball player, provided fun activities for African American male students (grades kindergarten through junior high school), participating in a program called Project MALE, at the Lancaster High School gym held Saturday, March 7, 2015.

Mr. Johnson is a resident of Southern Dallas and graduate of Carter High School and the University of Texas at Arlington.  He also earned an Associate degree from Cedar Valley College. Mr. Johnson is founder and CEO of the Heads Up! Foundation, a nonprofit organization that promotes the total development of youth through sports, life-skill training, and mentoring programs.Students participated in activities focused on healthy ways to warm-up for physical activity, basketball drills, and basketball games.  Additionally, Mr. Johnson and a team of those working with him shared information on the importance of completing high school and getting a college education.  Students were also joined in activities by their parents, mentors, and instructors for the program.

Project MALE (Making Aspiring Leaders Excel) is a student-parent program for African American males focused on engaging students in extracurricular activities that create an environment for them to be successful academically while providing them with the life skills necessary for success in life.  The young males identify themselves as boys becoming “Men of Distinction.”  This student-parent program meets monthly, with many of the meetings being held at the Inspiring Body of Christ Church where Dr. Rickie Rush is the pastor.  Parent sessions have been taught by Dr. Rush and focus on the 3 C's: Having great conversations, building character, and having great conduct. Additionally, the parent sessions have included presentations from such guests as Comerica Bank on financial planning.

The students engage in three-hour sessions focused on such topics as Setting Goals, Giving Back to the Community; Living a Healthy Lifestyle; Managing Anger; and Respect for Authority.  Sessions are led by African American male instructors, supported by African American male mentors and guest presenters.  Recently, guests from Children's Hospital /Methodist Hospital presented on healthy living, and members of the Dallas and Cedar Valley College Police Departments presented on "What to do When the Police Stops You.”  The students also participated in a service project that including collecting and giving socks to veterans.

Various colleges, churches, business, and community organizations have come together to sponsor Project MALE.  Dr. Jennifer Wimbish, President of Cedar Valley College, one of the original organizations of the program, stated:  "We are excited about the results we are having with our African American male students. We started this program as a proactive way to contribute to the success of African American male students after the Trayvon Martin incident.  We wanted to have African Americans engaged in positive methods and mentoring to support the success of our male students, given that approximately 50% (nationally) of the African American males who get to ninth grade in high school do not complete high school. We started with this age group because when we brought the community together through participation of 18 organizations, we found that our community has a number of programs of this type for high school and college students, but found very few programs of the nature of Project MALE for kindergarten through elementary students.    We are finding that a unique feature of this extracurricular program is the parent engagement portion.  This was the vision of Dr. Rush, who at an organizational meeting shared that we needed to

work with both the students and parents.  He also challenged the men involved to create a program with all African American male instructors and mentors. The men came together and simply did that. We started the program with a focus on kinder through elementary grades; however, at the end of the pilot for the program, parents of this student population requested that we continue the program for junior high school students as well.  We asked for an organization to sponsor the junior high school group.  Members of the Dallas Alumnae Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority were willing to sponsor this age group as a

connection to their national male initiative.

The goals of the program focus on personal and social maturity and are consistent with the state of Texas CORE curriculum goals, and are measured and evaluated through qualitative means by the research department at Cedar Valley College.”

Project MALE has continued through the support of the following organizations that are actively engaged through funding or active involvement of employees or members:

For savings-savvy consumers, tax season means getting creative with how to use your federal tax refund check.

The IRS says the average tax refund issued so far in 2015 tops $3,500. While it can be tempting to hit up the mall and blow through your money the second that big check arrives, smart spenders find ways to turn a refund into a “MeFund” through thrifty money-management decisions that keep cash in their pocket.

To help you become a better

saver and a more prudent spender, Lynnette Khalfani-Cox, The Money Coach suggests five smart ways to stretch your refund check, making your money go further and enhancing your quality of life:

1) Invest in yourselfIn today’s economy, it’s wise

to invest in your education, your career and your health. Each will benefit you personally and professionally. Consider using some of your tax refund check to take a continuing education class or attend a business networking event. Similarly, invest in your health by signing up for a gym, taking yoga classes, or getting the aid of a personal trainer. A healthy body can boost creativity and productivity – and hopefully lower your long-term healthcare costs too.

2) Pay off debtA recent study from the

American Psychological Association showed money is a top cause of stress for Americans. To help rid yourself of money worries, reduce debt with your tax refund. Pay off a credit card bill, wipe out a lump sum on loans, or make an extra mortgage payment to help toward becoming debt free.

3) Spend wisely by taking advantage of seasonal promotions

If you are going to spend on something you want, do it the smart way. Take advantage of

seasonal promotions in order to keep much of your refund in your pocket. For instance, if you’re in the market for a new phone, go to Cricket Wireless to receive free or discounted phones, all after mail-in rebate, such as the Nokia Lumia 635. And, if you port your number to Cricket, you may also get a free month of service after completing two months on one of the provider’s Smart, Pro or Advanced plans.

Check out more details at www.cricketwireless.com.

4) Budget for larger purchasesIf you’re thinking about

spending your tax refund on a vacation or must-have electronics, be sure to first budget realistically. Remember, a vacation won’t just involve travel expenses and hotel accommodations. Be sure to factor in food, entertainment and miscellaneous costs such as tips, souvenirs and parking. Before using your refund on a big-ticket purchase, you should also use helpful budgeting tools to monitor your monthly spending. Mint.com is a good online and mobile budgeting software tool that can help you track your spending.

5) Create a “MeFund”A final way to put your money

to good use is to boost your savings. Create a “MeFund” as a way to save more every month – whether from a tax refund check, through smart budgeting or value found by switching to a no-contract wireless carrier like Cricket on a nationwide 4G LTE network – so you can spend more on the things that matter to you in the future. Whatever your goal, you’ll reach it a lot sooner if you save exclusively for it.

From investing in yourself to

paying down debt and being a smarter spender and saver, let tax refund season be your time to get ahead. After all, by using that tax refund check wisely, you’ll set yourself up for financial prosperity in 2015 and beyond.

Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news

media and intellectuals around the country have given their

grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100

days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several

people from the local front graded the new president.

Congresswoman EddieBernice Johnson

Grade:A“I am deeply impressed with the progress that

President Barack Obama has made during the first 100days of his administration. Already we are seeingevidence of the administration’s plan to dig our countryout of recession and develop long-term, sustainable pros-perity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to

repair our frayed alliances and restore ourinternational leadership.

Finally, the Obama adminis-tration’s code of ethicshas broughtmuch-neededtransparency andaccountability to theWhite House.

President Obamais delivering on thechange that hepromised.”

Senator Kay

“In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming accel-

eration of policies that will take America down the

wrong track. The administration has proposed

trillions of dollars in new spending, which will

result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply

raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am

very concerned aboutthe President’s intention toclose Guantanamo without aworkable plan to relocatedetainees. It is mysincere hope that, movingforward,

responsible approach to ournation’s challenges thatAmericansdeserve.”(The office of John Cornyn of

Dallas is abuzz at theelection issues beforethem on May 9 whencitizens are asked tovote on the controver-sial ConventionCenter Hotel that isbeing backed byMayor

remember that thepropositions are toamend the Dallas CityCharter which, amongother things, gives thecity the power to acquireproperty for any publicpurpose. The propositionsare worded to prohibit thecity from acting on thesebefore stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen wouldlike the city to maintainthose powers, they are tovote NO and vice versa.
