Nomination of"Singing to the Accompaniment of the Gusle" for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List ofthe Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

The Union of Gusle Players of Serbia is an organization that brings together gus/e players of all ages who practice the art of singing to the accompaniment of the gusle for their own pleasure, accompanied by their family members, at public performances, such as concerts, festivals, competitions and other public gatherings, or as members of numerous societies, associations or unions active in the territory of Serbia. It was established with the aim of collecting, nurturing, preserving and promoting the tradition of singing to the accompaniment of the gusle.

At the meetings, the Union's Assembly adopts short-term and long-term plans focused on: • documenting and promoting singing to the accompaniment of the gusle as part of intangible

cultural heritage in Serbia and in the Diaspora through direct contacts, as well as through an intemet presentation, a complex portal that covers the activities of all associations and the Union and contains the complete archive and work plans;

• keeping record of all gus/e players, societies, associations, and gus/e-makers; • mediating in the collaboration with experts and institutions involved in the study of singing to

the accompaniment of the gus/e; • cooperating with national education institutions with the aim to provide instruction in singing

to the accompaniment of the gusle and the related skills; • implementing projects aimed at preparing publications, promotional films and representative

video and sound recordings (CD, DVD); • organizing festivals, competitions, meetings in order to present the work of its members.

As an umbrella organization that brings together 35 gusle playing associations, the Union organizes the Festival of Gusle Players, which is the most important annual competition, as well as the Festival of Young Gusle Players, intended for gusle players up to 18 years of age. By publishing Gusle: the magazine about folk poetry and its interpretation, the Union seeks to foster a wider promotion of

It is the strong belief of the Union of Gusle Players of Serbia - as an organization that actively contributes to the safeguarding, presentation and transmission of singing to the accompaniment of the gusle - that the inscription of singing to the accompaniment of the gusle on the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity would help maintain this practice. Accordingly, the Union expresses its consent to inscribe singing to the accompaniment of the gusle on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Ethnomusicological department of the Stevan Mokranjac Music School in Kraljevo has been active since the academic year 2004/2005. It includes sub-departments dedicated to folk wind instruments, folk string instruments (gusle) and traditional folk singing. This Department offers complex musical and ethnomusicological education to the students covered by the syllabus, which includes traditional singing or traditional playing. In the educational process, knowledge transfer takes place through practical work, field research and seminars.

The knowledge related to the traditional practice of vocal and instrumental expression is acquired at workshops conducted in cooperation with eminent artists, whereas the theoretical knowledge of folk literature and ethnology help students understand the literary, linguistic and historical context that gave rise to specific musical forms.

The uniqueness of the practice is reflected in the fact that it conforms to the principles of traditional music production and transmission of singing to the accompaniment of the gusle that are common in the community that practises them.

The importance of maintaining and presenting local traditional music is confirmed by our exceptionally successful tours in Norway, France, Germany and the countries in the West Balkan region.

In 1995/96, the Mokranjac Music School in Belgrade launched the programmes of the Department of Musicology which include training in traditional singing and· playing the flute. bagpipe. kava! and gusle This is the first example of organized institutionalized teaching of traditional singing and playing within primary and secondary music education. The practice involves the revitalization of obliterated musical forms and the perpetuation of those that are still living; it is based on the traditional musicianship of the Serbs and other skills that have been passed down for decades and centuries only orally.

The process of knowledge transfer takes place in the educational process, during field research and seminars. The knowledge related to the traditional practice of vocal and instrumental expression is acquired at workshops conducted in cooperation with eminent artists. Furthermore, the reading of music scores, songs and instrumental music, which is no longer practiced, and its transposition into a specific musical rendition, is an important link in the education process. A great help in overcoming the transmission of practice is provided through the process of familiarizing students with the theoretical knowledge of folk literature and ethnology, which help them understand the literary, linguistic and historical context that gave rise to specific musical forms. The uniqueness of the practice is reflected in the fact that it conforms to the principles of traditional music production without stylization and alterations.

Through active performances at numerous concerts (public classes, final concerts. public concerts. competitions, etc.) the wider community has the opportunity to become acquainted with the practice of traditional singing to the accompaniment of the gusle, and the intangible cultural heritage of Serbia. The orientation towards the public and the wide visibility of activities are reflected in the publishing of various sound and video recordings, thereby intensifying the popularization of ethnomusicology and interest among young people.

Dear Madam/Sir,

As a national museum institution, the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade has been focused on collecting, cataloguing, presenting and preserving the ethnographic cultural heritage of Serbia and the Balkan region since its establishment in 1901.

During 115 years of its existence and operation, the Museum has collected 52,000 ethnographic objects that serve as the evidence of the ethnic and cultural identity of the Serbs and other nations who have inhabited the Balkans. Along with the collected items of material culture, the Museum's experts, as well

as numerous associates, primarily ethnologists, musicologists, architects, photographers and others, have collected abundant evidence on ethnogenetic processes, ritual practice, and the social and economic factors that have influenced the formation of economy and culture. The Museum's collections, archives, photo documentation and visual materials have always been an inexhaustible source for the study of all aspects of daily life.

In the context of numerous activities implemented by the Museum, exhibitions, education programmes for various age and sex groups and publishing have a special place. From its beginnings, the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade has been focused on the preservation and transmission ofthe elements of intangible cultural heritage by organizing workshops and courses of traditional crafts, as well as concerts of

traditional music and dance.

Over the past several decades, it has published a number of studies on the musical and dancing tradition of Serbia in the journal issued annually by the Museum, as well as a catalogue of the collection of folk

musical instruments.

At temporary and permanent exhibitions, VISitors are able to see examples of preserved traditional instruments. The gusle occupy a special place among them.

In 2015, the Museum organized the exhibition They Speak where Everyone is Silent: Gusle from the Collection of the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade, whose aim was to highlight the importance of this

folk instrument. In conjunction with folk epic poetry, gusle were and have remained an important factor in the transmission of moral and ethical values and family and ethnic affiliation, and the keeper of historical memory.

The selection of items - instruments from different periods, social and economic epochs, highlighted the complexity of the exhibited objects, from the manufacturing and decoration methods to their use in everyday life. Along with the main exhibition, which presented items from the Museum's collection, an exhibition of the works of gusle-makers and workshops were organized, where the audience could learn about various methods of making and decorating the instrument. A competition for the most beautiful gusle was also organized. The interactive workshops where gusle players taught the participants the techniques and skills of playing the gusle and singing to their accompaniment attracted a special attention ofthe audience. In 2016, the exhibition toured in several museums in Serbia.

We are pleased to propose to the National Committee for Intangible Cultural Heritage to nominate the ICH element Singing to the Accompaniment of the Gusle for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The inscription of this element on the list will significantly help popularize the fostering of cultural heritage. Through its programmes, the Ethnographic Museum will continue to collect, catalogue, preserve and present both the tangible and intangible factors of cultural heritage of the Serbs and other ethnic groups living in the territory of Serbia.

Subject: Nomination of singing to the accompaniment ofthe gusle for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List ofthe Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

The Staro Selo Open Air Museum at Sirogojno was established as a cultural institution in 1992. Through various museum activities, the traditional culture of the Uzice and Zlatibor region is presented in fifty original residential and commercial facilities. Through lively programmes, which include exhibitions, workshops for various age groups, concerts, fairs, seminars, conferences that gather scholars and professionals, etc., the professionals employed at the Museum actively collaborate in the recording, presentation and revitalization ofthe intangible cultural heritage of Serbia. Snezana Tomic, ethnologist, Museum Counsellor, is the coordinator appointed by the National ICH Committee.

The Staro Selo Open Air Museum at Sirogojno nominated the The Art of Making Wooden Flasks (cutura) in the Village ofPi/ica and the Skill of Making Cream (kajmak) for inscription into the National List oflntangible Cultural Heritage, and they were inscribed in the National ICH Register on June 2012 and December 2016.

As one of the main activities of the Museum is to familiarize visitors with traditional crafts, exhibitions and workshops are organized where they can learn, through practical work, how to make various objects in wood, wicker, textile and other materials. Every year in August, the Fair of Traditional Crafts and Occupations is held where artisans from the Uzice and Zlatibor area, as well as from other areas i:i the region, present their work. The Fair offers the opportunity to buy household items, kitchenware, clothes and traditional musical instruments, such as thefrula (flute) and gusle. To the satisfaction of the audience, the opening ceremony of the 2014 Fair featured a performance of the gusle-player Dusan Karlicic iz Stavlje (Municipality of Sjenica).

During 2015, the exhibition Through Life with Music was organized. On that occasion, traditional and modern musical instruments used in the Uzice and Zlatibor region were presented, as well as the moments in the life of individuals and communities when music was part of the rituals, customs, rites and entertainment. The gusle from the Museum's collection were exhibited together with other musical instruments.

Since 2011, the World ofMusic Festival has been organized at the Museum in order to present to the audience the rich cultural heritage in the area of performing arts. Concerts and workshops of singing and music ensembles and individuals are organized as part ofthe Festival.

Between 1 May and 30 September 2017, music workshops and concerts will be organized at the Museum's summer stage. The project includes music interpretation workshops that last for several weeks; they are aimed at reviving the Museum's exhibition and the study oftraditional music as part of intangible cultural heritage.

Through its regular annual programmes, as well as through the activities of the employed ethnologists and anthropologists, the Staro Selo Open Air Museum at Sirogojno, contributes to the recording, evaluation and presentation ofthe intangible cultural heritage of the Uzice and Zlatibor region. Therefore, we are honoured and pleased to recommend to the National Committee for Intangible Cultural Heritage to nominate singing to the accompaniment of the gusle for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Heritage ofHumanity.

The oldest cultural event in Serbia, Vukov sabor (established in 1933) offers an important framework for the promotion and presentation of intangible cultural heritage in the areas of oral traditions and expressions, and language as the bearer of intangible cultural heritage. Due to their importance for professionals, the local community, the bearers of traditional knowledge and skills, the programmes for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage that take place at the famous village of Trsic have been recognized as an example of successful practices in the preservation of intangible cultural heritage in Serbia and the region. Since its establishment, Vukov sabor was focused on nurturing oral traditions, traditional dances and songs, as well as a competition of gusle players in performing epic poetry. By improving programmes and expanding the scope of the event, the programmes have been enriched so as to focus on the elements of intangible cultural heritage.

One of the Sabor's longest-standing programmes is the performance and competition of gusle players, which is organized in cooperation with numerous gusle players and their associations. The Vuk KaradZic Gusle Players' Section at Loznica actively participates in the organization of several important programmes, such as Heritage, which presents the activities of local institutions, associations and individuals, and regional competitions of gusle players from Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia. Furthermore, the Vuk KaradZic Gusle Players' Section takes part in the presentation of singing to the accompaniment of the gusle within the programme Try it yourself, where the attendees of Vukov sabor are given a chance to learn basic gus/e-playing skills from heritage bearers. Informal education is provided through workshops within the Summer School of the Serbian Language, Cultural History and Translating at Trsic, EJacki Vukov sabor and the programme Language in the (In)Tangible Cultural Heritage.

The cultural landscape of Trsic, which is the setting for Vukov sabor, provides an opportunity to demonstrate gusle playing in an environment where it is assigned an exceptional importance and is additionally endorsed. That is why Vukov sabor has been a gathering place for gusle players from throughout the Balkans for the past 84 years. Through constant competition, they have been improving their skills and have been additionally involved in the presentation of singing to the

accompaniment of the gusle. The Vuk KaradZic Cultural Centre, as the bearer of these activities, expresses its support to the nomination of singing to the accompaniment of the gus/e for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Consent for the nomination of "singing to the accompaniment of the gusle" for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of

Humanity

Serbian Ethnomusicological Society, as one of the most important professional organizations in Serbia dedicated to the preservation and nurturing of traditional music and performing arts, contributes through its activities to the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage of Serbia. By carrying out research, educational and promotional programmes, the Society, as a professional organization that has the capacity for the implementation of various segments of preservation, development and the implementation of safeguarding measures. is an important part of the established system for the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage of Serbia. The organization of educational workshops focused on the elements inscribed in the National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage in the area of performing arts, is an important form of cooperation among various associations, institutions and heritage bearers in the area of heritage safeguarding. Workshops, organized as a way of sharing experiences of the bearers related to the practice of traditional singing and gusle playing, are held with the expert help of ethnomusicologists as part of the proposed safeguarding measures for this element inscribed in the National Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Through workshops held in the areas with a distinct gus/eplaying practice, the society contributes to the implementation of programmes directed both towards transmitting knowledge and raising the awareness of the importance of intangible cultural heritage. The purpose of these workshops is to encourage and motivateyoung people to adopt the skill of gus/e-playing. This involves the participation of the bearers of this skill and collaboration with folklore ensembles and gusle-playing associations. Furthermore, through promotional activities, workshops help local communities recognize the needs to preserve and transfer a part of their own heritage. Their implementation, supported by local institutions and the Ministry of Culture and media, is a good model of joint action aimed at preserving this heritage element. Serbian Ethnomusicological Society expresses its consent for the nomination of singing to the accompaniment of the gusle for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, believing that this segment of heritage will thereby gain a broader. international visibility along national and regional notability.

The Association of Folklorists of Serbia, as a professional organization whose members are researchers from all disciplines involved in folklore studies, hereby expresses its support for the nomination of singing to the accompaniment of the gusle for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Association - whose activities are focused on the study of folklore and the culture of the Serbs, the development of research in all areas of science, organizing national and international congresses and conferences, symposia, seminars and meetings in cooperation with other scholarly institutions in the Republic of Serbia and abroad, as well as the organization of field research and train ing for young researchers - is included in the system for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage of Serbia. With the support of the Ministry of Culture and Media, the Association has launched the project "The Living Folklore of Serbia" with the aim of collecting in a single place the intangible heritage of Serbia, documented during field research by researchers from various fields of the humanities and the current members of the Association of Folklorists of Serbia . Thanks to this project and in cooperation with research organizations such as the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Philology; Institute of Literature and Arts; Musicological Institute of SASA; Institute for Balkan Studies of SASA; Faculty of Music in Belgrade, local cultural institutions, the Association actively contributes to the documentation and presentation of the intangible cultural heritage of Serbia, including singing to the accompaniment of the gus/e. Furthermore, through the organization of conferences, publication of research in the journal Fo/koristika or in monographs, the Association pays great attention to the study of epic poetry, which is the main body of songs sung to the accompaniment of the gus/e.

We believe that the inscription of singing the accompaniment of the gusle on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity would contribute to the preseNation of this performing practice.

The Municipality of Vrbas is actively involved in the preservation of singing to the accompaniment of the gusle and, being one of the supporters of the nomination for registration in the National Register of intangible cultural heritage, it contributes to its safeguarding.

As part of its regular annual plans and activities, the City of Vrbas participates in the preservation of gusle-playing by providing support in organizing the most important gus/e-playing events, competitions and festivals, which involve gus/e-players of all generations and present this segment of heritage, which is very important for our country.

By supporting the activities of local folklore ensembles, we encourage actions aimed at transmitting the skill of singing to the accompaniment of the gusle, while ensuring conditions for education, promotion and sustainability. Thanks to the activities of folklore ensembles, as well as the vivid activities of a large number of gusle players, Vrbas has earned the title of the "City of Gusle Players", which confirms its role in preserving gusle-playing. At the same time, it has accepted the duty to ensure the transmission of the heritage to new generations. Therefore, we believe that our support and the activities we implement, will contribute to the inscription of singing to the accompaniment of the gusle on the UNESCO Representative List ofthe Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

As the local community where the tradition of gus/e-playing is living and is nurtured both among old generations (born in the areas where gusle-playing has the deepest, centuries-long roots), and among their descendants in the second, third, and even the fourth generation born in the territory very atypical for this tradition, we express our consent for the nomination of singing to the accompaniment of the gusle on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

As a confirmation of our previous work dedicated to preserving this form of folk art, we highlight that:

• gusle-players' folklore ensembles who have won national and provincial competitions are active in our municipality;

• several gus/e-players' festivals at the provincial, national and regional levels have been organized at Vrbas so far;

• the City of Vrbas is the only holder of the title The City of Gusle awarded by the Union of Gusle-P!ayers for the successful fostering of gus/e-playing.

Folk music ensembles that perform music as accompaniment to folk dancing or vocal ensembles are composed of people who have acquired their musical knowledge at music schools, but they also include selftrained, talented musicians. Singing to the accompaniment of the gusle is one of the programmes of the Stavalj Folklore Ensemble. We have learned how to play the gusle and sing to their accompaniment from older members of the ensemble or old gusle players in our local community. Through cooperation with other ensembles, at concerts and public performances, as well as private events, celebrations and gatherings, we strive to familiarize community members and the wider audience with the skill of singing to the accompaniment of the gusle and to transfer it to young generations. We believe that the inscription of singing to the accompaniment ofthe gusle on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity will make this ICJ I element more visible both in the local and in the international context. Accordingly, we express our consent to undertake the nomination procedure.

I Mi lic Saponjic, hereby sign my consent for the nomination of singing to the accompaniment of the

gusle on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

I believe that singing to the accompaniment of the gusle, which I learned as a boy from older

members of my family and neighbours on the slopes of Mount Zlatar, is an important part of the

family heritage and national identity. While listening to the performance of older gusle players, I was

learning how to play the gus/e and how to sing to the accompaniment of this instrument, thereby

adopting this skill, which I would later develop independently. The selection of songs and the way of

accompanying them on the gusle have become part of my personal style, w~ich I demonstrate at

private events or public performances in concert halls, theatres, school celebrations, gathering in

churchyards, etc.

Wishing contribute to the preservation of singing to the accompaniment of the gusle and its

transmission to new generations, I have also learned how to make this instrument. I have

demonstrated the skills gained by observing old gus/e-makers by making more than 2000

instruments.

I believe that the preservation of singing to the accompaniment of the gusle is of great importance

and I hope that my consent will help strengthen the nomination for inscription of singing to the

accompaniment of the gusle on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of

Humanity.

I hereby express my consent to nominate singing to the accompaniment of the gusle for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Already as a child, at family gatherings, festivities, the celebrations of the slava (the feast of the family patron saint), weddings and home gatherings, I listened to the older members of the community sing to the accompaniment of the gusle about important historical figures and events. I learned gus/e-playing (guslanje) and singing to the accompaniment of this instrument from older gus/e-players, by imitating their technique and improving it through playing and singing among family members and in public. I learned the lyrics from collections of poems, books, musical records, disks, and by listening to other gus/e-players. I will transfer the acquired knowledge to new generations in order to preserve singing to the accompaniment of the gusle for the future.

STATEMENT OF CONSENT

I hereby express my consent to nominate singing to the accompaniment of the gusle for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. I have been involved in the making of traditional musical instruments. especially the gusle, for over 20 years. I am self-taught and I learned the skill of gus/emaking by watching other gus/e-makers and studying this ancient and traditional musical instrument. Every item of the instrument is unique. I make them using the materials and techniques employed in the past decades. I adorn the head of the gusle with animal or human figures carved in wood. I have made several hundred items upon commission from local and international clients. A number of items (20) are part of the collection of an ethnographic museum in China. I learned the skill of playing the gusle and singing to their accompaniment by listening, watching and imitating other, older gus/e-players. I do hope that, in the future. I will transfer my knowledge on gus/e-making. gus/e-playing and singing to their accompaniment to interested individuals. It is with great pleasure that I support the proposal of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia to nominate singing to the accompaniment of the gusle for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

I hereby express my consent to nominate singing to the accompaniment of the gusle for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Already as a child, at family gatherings, festivities, the celebrations of the slava (the feast of the family patron saint), weddings and home gatherings, I listened to the older members of the community sing to the accompaniment of the gusle about important historical figures and events. I learned gus/e-playing (guslanje) and singing to the accompaniment of this instrument from older gus/e-players, by imitating their technique and improving it through playing and singing among family members and in public. lt is with great pleasure that I express my consent and support to the nomination of singing to the accompaniment of the gusle for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

I acquired the early knowledge about singing to the accompaniment of the gusle within my family, by taking part in family gatherings and other important events. I began to sing to the accompaniment of the gusle when I was six and I continued to improve the acquired skills as a student of the Stevan Mokranjac Music School in Kraljevo. While parallelly attending lessons at the piano and the gusle departments, I acquired both the theoretical and practical knowledge of classical and traditional music, which I improved through further education. This was the basis for developing my own creative expression.

I practice gusle playing both a soloist and with my band at public performances aimed at promoting and preserving traditional ways of singing in the sphere of artistic and creative expression, as well as through performances and concerts, cooperation with orchestra and other prominent musicians from Serbia, through various forms of art, science, etc. As a winner of the Festival of Young Gusle Players and the TV series Serbia's Got Talent in 2012, as well as a participant of international and world competitions in the World Music category (the second place), numerous events and concerts, the Festival of the Union of Serbian Gusle Players, gusleplaying and literary events, religious events, festivals of folk art, gusle-playing trainings, symposia, conferences and seminars dedicated to the gusle, ordinary gatherings (celebrations of the slava, birthdays, baptisms, weddings, departure ceremonies and other occasions), I actively work towards preserving and ensuring the visibility of singing to the accompaniment of the gusle. All of these activities contribute to the preservation of gusle playing, as a very important part of the intangible cultural heritage of Serbia.

Through my activities, I seek to transfer to my and future generations the awareness of the importance of preserving this ICH element, as well as to explain, especially to young people, its importance in modern life. I have put a lot of effort in publicizing singing to the accompaniment of the gusle in print and electronic media. This has created better conditions for the promotion of the practice of gusle playing and has aroused a greater interest among the wide public. I believe that it is in the utmost national interest to nominate singing to the accompaniment of the gusle as an element of intangible cultural heritage protected by UNESCO because the gusle have transmitted human values and the love of freedom since the ancient times.

I have been transferring the acquired knowledge to new generations as a teacher at the Mokranjac Secondary Music School, where I teach Singing to the Accompaniment of the Gusle. I hereby express my consent to nominate singing to the accompaniment of the gusle for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural H.:rit.agc of Humanity. Already as a child, at family gatherings, festivities, weddings and home gatherings, I listened to the older members of the community sing to the accompaniment of the gus/e about important historical figures and events. I learned gusle-playing (gus/anje) I playing of krajisnica, singing to the accompaniment of this instrument from older gusle-playcrs, by imitating their technique and improving it through playing and singing among family members and in public. I learned the lyrics from collections of poems, books, musical records, disks, and by listening to other gus/e-players. J will transfer the acquired knowledge to new generations in order to preserve singing to the accompaniment of the gusle for the future.
