Saint Columba – Book of Kells Illuminating the Church! Did you know that St. Columbkille and the monks he formed around him at his monastery at the Abbey of Iona in Scotland are perhaps best known for preserving copies of the four Gospels? The famous Book of Kells is a beautifully illuminated manuscript containing ancient copies of the Gospel accounts of Matthew, Mark,

Luke and John. Columba and his brother monks were not only spiritual masters, they were artists who brought the beauty of heaven down to earth. That is why I plan on bringing this beauty into our Church founded upon the Columba tradition. I am having several wooden reliefs (a three-dimensional sculptured work of art) crafted by Demetz Studio in Italy, the same craftsman who carved our statues based on some of the most famous illuminated pages from the Book of Kells. Here is a rendering of the Four Gospels manuscript and how it will look on the front of our Ambo. The Book of Kells will add beauty and tell the story of St. Columbkille to everyone who enters our church. A generous donor recently died and left the parish a generous sum of money that he wanted used to update and beautify our worship space. I look forward to sharing with you a whole lot more of Columba’s legacy and how our church will reflect the important work he and his monks began so long ago and their relevance to proclaiming the Gospel today! Never forget, the Lord is with us, always!

REST IN PEACEMay all our deceased parishioners live forever in the joy of the Resurrection… James Monahan, Michael Monyak

FATHER JAMIE’S HEALING HUMOR Mother to teenage daughter going to a party: “Have a good time.” Teenage daughter shouting back: “Don’t tell me what to do!” (from POINTS WITH PUNCH by Dennis R. Fakes, 1982) When Jesus tells us what to do, not only do we need to listen, we need to respond obediently. He told Peter to come to him, over the wind and the waves, and Peter was able to walk on the water as long as he focused on the Lord’s invitation to “come.” The Lord will sustain us in all our difficulties, through all life’s storms, if we but come to Him and obey His words.

WEEKLY SCRIPTURE PASSAGE Let us pray together the verses from the Psalm. May we be comforted knowing that the Lord our God is the Lord of justice. “The Lord himself will give his benefits; our land shall yield its increase. Justice shall walk before him, and prepare the way of his steps.”

REVERENT RECEPTION OF THE EUCHARIST

As we celebrate Sunday Mass, our attention is called to the Precious Body and Blood of Christ in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar. This is a good time to take stock of how well and reverently we receive Christ, who is truly present in the Eucharist. Are we aware of mortal sin on our souls? All mortal sin must be confessed in the Sacrament of Reconciliation before we receive the Eucharist, lest we incur further sin for receiving unworthily (1 Corinthians 11:29). Do we participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation regularly or are we in a pattern of receiving the Eucharist while rarely receiving sacramental absolution? Our participation in the Eucharist presumes our participation in Reconciliation.

When it comes to the way in which we physically receive the Host: in the Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite, which is what we celebrate at St. Columbkille, we are permitted to receive either on the tongue or in the hand. Each form of reception is to be done properly. In both cases, after the minister says, “The Body of Christ,” we acknowledge this reality by responding “Amen” and giving a slight bow of the head. Then, if receiving on the tongue, the head is tilted slightly back and the tongue extended. If receiving in the hand, form a “throne” for Christ, according to St. Cyril of Jerusalem, by cupping one hand under the other. Allow the minister to place the Host flat in the palm of your hand—do not grasp for it. When receiving in the hand, please place the Host in your mouth while standing before the minister. The minister must watch to ensure that the host is received to protect against potential desecration. It is not appropriate to walk back to your pew with the Host! Then, after consuming the Host, check for particles on your hand and fingers—these are still the Eucharist—and consume any remaining elements of the Host.

During the COVID pandemic, when approaching the Communion minister, you are to pull your mask below the chin, present one hand resting on the palm of the other and after responding “Amen,” the communicant reverently places the Eucharist in the mouth and immediately replaces their mask.

A blessed Sunday to everyone! May Jesus in the Eucharist bless you abundantly and draw you ever deeper into the Father’s divine life. See you in the Eucharist!

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRAYER

ASK THE DEACONQ.: If Jesus is God and God knows all things, why then does it say in Scripture that Jesus grew in wisdom and knowledge?

A.: To answer that, I’m going to have to get a little deep and use some philosophical language. I’m going to refer to one of my favorite “go to guys,” St. Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas said that God’s knowledge is not like our knowledge. You and I form our knowledge of things, we learn, by working through concepts and by making judgements; in other words, we think. God’s knowledge is different, it’s immediate – He does not have ideas, He knows things immediately. He doesn’t need to think in terms of putting concepts together and making judgements – His is a different form of knowledge. So the knowledge that Jesus would’ve had as the Second Person of the Trinity, really would not function in a human mind. In one, now famous quote from Aquinas he says: “If there had not been in the soul of Christ some other knowledge besides His Divine knowledge, it would have not known anything. Divine knowledge cannot be an act of the human soul of Christ; it belongs to another nature.” So you see that it’s not so easy to say that “God knows everything therefore, Jesus knew everything.”

Every once in a while, as humans we experience a human version of immediate knowledge and simply know something in a way like God knows things. The best example of this is the way we know ourselves. You and I know who we are by being what we are and not by thinking about what we are.

Regarding Jesus' “earthly knowledge,” people were astounded at His ability to teach with authority, not necessarily His knowledge of life in general. He would have spoken Aramaic and maybe Hebrew. He may have learned some words or expressions in Greek from tradesmen in the markets and could’ve picked up some Latin from the Roman military always present. His manual or mechanical skills he would’ve learned from His parents. This bit of speculation comes from St. Luke’s gospel where he talks about Jesus growing in wisdom, “And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and favor before God and man.”

How about an easier question next time!

DIVINE MERCY HOLY HOURThere will be a Divine Mercy Holy Hour Sunday, August 9th at 2:30 p.m. in Saint Monica Church. All are welcome!

RITE OF CHRISTIANINITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the ordinary means by which adults who, after hearing the mystery of Christ proclaimed, purposely and freely seek the living God by formally inquiring with the Catholic Church. Through dedicated instruction and spiritual accompaniment, and with the help of God, those inquiring embark upon a journey of growth and conversion so that, at the proper time, they may fruitfully receive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist). Those who are not baptized, or have been baptized in another Christian tradition, and wish to explore full communion in the Catholic Church—as well as anyone who has stopped the active practice of the Catholic faith—is invited to contact Fr. Michael at (216) 524-1987 for information regarding the RCIA process. Spiritual accompaniment is available and formal instruction begins on September 14th. Please share this information with those who may benefit!

FROM THE HOLY FATHER

THE GOSPEL OF LIFE

Twenty-five years ago, Saint Pope John Paul ll sent the encyclical letter Evangelium Vitae, The Gospel of Life, to the church. We are going to begin including short sections from this letter in each Sunday bulletin. We know that you will find the words of this magnificent encyclical incredibly relevant to our current world. If you are interested in reading the entire letter, you can read it on the Vatican website.

1. The Gospel of life is at the heart of Jesus’ message. Lovingly received day after day by the Church, it is to be preached with dauntless fidelity as “good news” to the people of every age and culture.

At the dawn of salvation, it is the Birth of a Child which is proclaimed as joyful news: “I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord” (Lk 2:10-11). The source of this “great joy” is the Birth of the Saviour; but Christmas also reveals the full meaning of every human birth, and the joy which accompanies the Birth of the Messiah is thus seen to be the foundation and fulfilment of joy at every child born into the world (cf. Jn 16:21).

When he presents the heart of his redemptive mission, Jesus says: “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (Jn 10:10). In truth, he is referring to that “new” and “eternal” life which consists in communion with the Father, to which every person is freely called in the Son by the power of the Sanctifying Spirit. It is precisely in this “life” that all the aspects and stages of human life achieve their full significance.

The incomparable worth of the human person

2. Man is called to a fullness of life which far exceeds the dimensions of his earthly existence, because it consists in sharing the very life of God. The loftiness of this supernatural vocation reveals the greatness and the inestimable value of human life even in its temporal phase. Life in time, in fact, is the fundamental condition, the initial stage and an integral part of the entire unified process of human existence. It is a process which, unexpectedly and undeservedly, is enlightened by the promise and renewed by the gift of divine life, which will reach its full realization in eternity (cf. 1 Jn 3:1-2). At the same time, it is precisely this supernatural calling which highlights the relative character of each individual’s earthly life. After all, life on earth is not an “ultimate” but a “penultimate” reality; even so, it remains a sacred reality entrusted to us, to be preserved with a sense of responsibility and brought to perfection in love and in the gift of ourselves to God and to our brothers and sisters.

The Church knows that this Gospel of life, which she has received from her Lord, 1 has a profound and persuasive echo in the heart of every person-believer and non-

believer alike – because it marvellously fulfils all the heart’s expectations while infinitely surpassing them. Even in the midst of difficulties and uncertainties, every person sincerely open to truth and goodness can, by the light of reason and the hidden action of grace, come to recognize in the natural law written in the heart (cf. Rom 2:14-15) the sacred value of human life from its very beginning until its end, and can affirm the right of every human being to have this primary good respected to the highest degree. Upon the recognition of this right, every human community and the political community itself are founded.

In a special way, believers in Christ must defend and promote this right, aware as they are of the wonderful truth recalled by the Second Vatican Council: “By his incarnation the Son of God has united himself in some fashion with every human being”.2 This saving event reveals to humanity not only the boundless love of God who "so loved the world that he gave his only Son" (Jn 3:16), but also the incomparable value of every human person.

The Church, faithfully contemplating the mystery of the Redemption, acknowledges this value with ever new wonder.3 She feels called to proclaim to the people of all times this "Gospel," the source of invincible hope and true joy for every period of history. The Gospel of God's love for man, the Gospel of the dignity of the person and the Gospel of life are a single and indivisible Gospel.

For this reason, man – living man – represents the primary and fundamental way for the Church.

CLEVELAND CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LIVE-STREAMED CONFERENCESATURDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2020

All women are invited to attend the Cleveland Catholic Women’s Live-Streamed Conference, a one-day event for adult women who wish to learn and pray as they growdeeper in their faith. The conference will be live-streamed on Saturday, October 17, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Inspired by St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the theme of this year’s conference is “Simply Holy: Living God’s Will in All Things.”

Not being able to meet in a large group should not stop us from being together. CCWC 2020 is different from other virtual conferences being offered right now.

We want you to set aside this day from normal tasks to allow this conference to change your life. We invite women to gather safely in small groups from their own living rooms or patios to participate in our live event, as if we were all together in the same place. The day will begin with a live-streamed Mass at Saints Cosmas & Damian in Twinsburg. Speakers throughout the day include Debbie Georgianni, co-host of EWTN Radio’s “Take 2 with Jerry and Debbie,” Mother Gabriella of Christ the Bridegroom Monastery, and veteran broadcaster and host of “Good Things Radio,” Brooke Taylor. Singer/songwriter Taylor Tripodi will share her musical gifts during our praise and worship time during live-streamed Adoration.

Our conference is built to encourage discussions after each speaker as well as increase our depth of understanding and enjoy fellowship. If you are planning to experience the conference on your own, discussion times are an opportunity for prayer and journaling withguidance from our workbook. We hope this day will spark a spiritual journey in our hearts and homes that will burn long after the conference has finished.

Registration for the conference opens August 17th and will be $25.00. To register, visit our website at www.clecatholicwomen.org. Each participant who registers before October 1st will receive a Conference Welcome Package in the mail that includes a beautiful workbook to use throughout the day and a few other special items. We will also have 2020 CCWC T-shirts available for purchase while registering. The conference will be recorded and made available to all registered participants later.

IGNATIAN VOLUNTEER CORPSAttention, Retired Catholics! The Ignatian

Volunteer Corps of Northeast Ohio is accepting new members this Fall!

Do you hear the call of Pope Francis to serve the poor? If you’re looking for something meaningful, check out the Ignatian Volunteer Corps. Volunteers are Catholic men and women over the age of 50 who spend a few hours each week offering their skills to specific nonprofits. Our members work in schools, support prison ministries, drive vans, tutor children, help immigrants, plan special events, provide administrative help and much more. We are currently offering volunteer from home opportunities. Also, we get together monthly (currently via Zoom) to socialize, pray and reflect. Let your lifetime of experience become the experience of a lifetime! Contact Regional Director, Ginny Pippin at 216-574-6300, www.ivcusa.org.

THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY, AUGUST 15TH(Not a Holy Day of Obligation this year)

GOOD SAMARITAN BACK-TO-SCHOOL DRIVE

It’s that time of year...time for school. For many years, the people of St. Columbkille have been very generous to the Good Samaritan “Back to School Drive”, but this year, because of COVID-19, we won’t be collecting "back to

school" items. The St. Vincent de Paul Society of Cleveland is accepting cash donations only. This will allow them to make bulk purchases and provide “non-contact” supplies directly to the schools in need. The Good Samaritan Ministry of St. Columbkille has sent a donation to this school drive since we will not be packing bags of school supplies this year.

If you would like to contribute to the efforts of the St. Vincent de Paul Society for 2020 back-to-school, you can donate on their website at www.svdpcle.org or you can mail a check to St. Vincent de Paul Society Back to School Drive, 1404 E. 9th Street – 3rd floor, Cleveland, OH 44114. (Do not send it to our parish.)

Thanks for your concern for folks in need of a little assistance.

SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS Local businesses and sponsors who advertise in our bulletin need you more now than ever. Please encourage others to show their support during this time by supporting these businesses.

FINANCIAL NEWS AND NOTES

• If you are unable to attend Mass, you can always drop off your weekly offertory envelope at the Parish Office or you can put it in another envelope and mail it.

• Please refrain from sending us one single check attached to multiple unmarked envelopes. The parish has no way of knowing how much money is being designated for each unmarked envelope therefore they must be returned. Please carefully mark your envelopes with the proper dollar amount so you can receive credit for your donation.

• Tuition assistance envelopes are processed separately from weekly offertory. Therefore, please write a separate check when contributing to tuition assistance. Catholic Charities envelopes are processed by the diocese so please write a separate check when contributing to Catholic Charities.

WEEKLY OFFERTORY

We received numerous parishioners' catch-up contributions from March-July showing a very large increase in our offertory. The parish is very excited to welcome these parishioners back to Mass. The offertory collection for the weekend of August 1st & 2nd was $16,493. This includes the envelopes we received at the parish during the week and at the Masses.

Thank you for your continued generosity to our parish!
