Copper Cables, Category 5Twisted pair Two insulated copper wires that are wound together to form a pair. There are several systems to distinguish wire diameter, however the American Wire Gauge (AWG) is the most commonly used. The higher AWG number is the smaller the conductor diameter.

Category cables commonly consist of 4 pairs (8 wires). The cable characteristics of Category cable are defined by the generally recognized standards such as TIA568 and ISO 80. The manufacturing of this cable differs depending on which Category cable is required. The cables proper physical structure and chosen insulating materials will determine the electrical characteristics and data transfer of the cables signal

The following types of twisted pair cable are:

UTP cable unshielded twisted pair. Cable consists of one or more pairs of wires sheathed in plastic jacket. UTP cable is widely used because of flexibility and compactness.

FTP cable foiled twisted pair this twisted pair has a common foil shield in addition to a copper conductor, (referred to as a drain wire) to drain the induced current.

STP cable shielded twisted pair this twisted pair has a common braid shield.

SFTP cable shielded/foiled twisted pair this twisted pair has two shields, one braided shield and one foil shield.

Some types of shielded cable have shield over each individual pair of copper wires which is referred to as individual shielding. This type of shielding protects the cable from external as well as internal EMI (electromagnetic interferences) and RFI (radio frequency interference).

Multi-pair cables are mainly intended for main cabling. This cable is specified up to 00 MHz. Category 5 UTP multi-pair cables meet ANSI/TIA/EIA 568A, ISO/IEC 80, and EN 503 requirements for category 5.

The cable structure provides high crosstalk attenuation. The conductor insulation is made of PE. Indoor cable has a light grey PVC jacket, outdoor cable has a black PVC jacket. Each bunch of cable is separated by wrapped tape.

Temperature plays a great role in cabling technology. Low temperature influence results in a loss of cable flexibility. The cable becomes fragile, and it becomes difficult to work with it. Conversely, high temperature destroys the plastic used in cable manufacturing. Therefore, it is very important to use cable with characteristics appropriate for the operating environment.

Electrical characteristics for Four-Pair cable

The nearest cable end relative to the receiving terminal is the most serious source of crosstalk. Due to this, the requirements of category 5e cabling focus on NEXT limitation. As frequency increases, both specific attenuation (decreased signal strength in the receiving terminal), and crosstalk attenuation (an increase in crosstalk) rise. Therefore, it is necessary, in order

to prevent even the most insignificant causes of crosstalk, to provide a signal strength that is higher than the crosstalk level. There is also a FEXT limitation. FEXT characterizes which part of signal at the far end reaches the receiving terminal. As for Equal Level FEXT (ELFEXT), it defines crosstalk attenuation at the far end, taking into consideration attenuation in the cabling system.

- Category 6 cable is intended for Gigabit Ethernet applications.

- Category 6 cable provides performance up to 00 MHz. However, for better quality performance, cables have been tested at higher frequencies (50 MHz).

- Category 6 cable can be successfully used in all modern applications. ACR of category 6 cable is 45% better than ACR of category 5 and 5e cable at 00 MHz.

- The usage of thicker conductors (from 0.45 mm) results in a higher level of attenuation of category 6 cable than category 5 and 5e cable.

- Some types of category 6 cable have a plastic spacer between the pairs. This additional separation improves NEXT performance and decreases crosstalk.

- The mechanical characteristics of category 6 cable are very close to the mechanical characteristics of category 5 cable. Category 6 cables are compatible with RJ-45 modular plugs.
