    I think a lot o what they teach the students is really the way that we run our agency. Itis all about collaboration. It is not just about the skills you can always train or those. Itis more about attitude and I eel that they get that.

    I liked the model. I think it is very simple but very clever.

    I didnt think I would be a planner or a person like that and I realised that I actually amreally organised. I went into Hyper Island thinking I was really creative as well but I dontthink I am as much.

    Now I eel quite condent in where my strengths are. I think that is really quiteimportant or this kind o industry where you have got to be quite condent with yourideas because someone will be willing to shoot them down or, i they are really good,they are going to be so new that people nd them too dierent.     The most dicult thing was probably getting over my ears.     I missed university and did that on purpose. I know a ew people who have been touniversity to do graphic degrees and have come out and are in a similar position to theone I was in when I let college. You come out and you still have to get the experience.I think I did 11 months at two dierent agencies and both people at each agency toldme that they look or experience and dont bother so much about degrees.     I suppose more than anything, it was getting my opinions heard. It was shaking thatinternship title and actually convincing (people) that you have things that mightbe worth thinking about; you do have ideas worth thinking about and you do havequestions that might challenge the bigger picture.     getting that point across and to be respected in that way.

    There is a bit o consensus amongst a lot o the students that Hyper Island is sooptimistic that it is almost misleading in a way. You really do think you can go into theworld and change it and do incredible things. The level o optimism and ambition whichwe ostered in that basement was quite incredible really and then you go into the real

    world and your bubble has been burst. A ew people have said that it is annoying, itshouldnt be like that because you are actually surprised in a negative way when you gointo the real world. But I disagree that is a bad thingI think it is the agencies thatneed to change, its not us.

    One thing that they dont teach you and you have to gure out yoursel is how to putHyper Island into the real world. Hyper Island is this amazing bubble where everyoneknows how this process works and you dont have any o the constraints o client andbudget.

    With uni, I eel that I have been learning something that has been written in a bookten years ago. In the past three years o being at uni, everything has changed but theyhavent seemed to grasp that.

    Probably in the three years I was there, I could have learnt what I did in one year.

    There were a lot o barriers in classrooms and stu and that was rustrating. Therewere times when you wanted to say things in a group and you elt that you couldntalways speak your mind. Towards the end o time, I set up a group on Facebook andI got the class talking that way and it seemed to come together a bit more and we

    started sharing more ideas and this was towards the end. It must have been the contextthat we were studying in. It was meant to be this space where we would all work andcollaborate but it never seemed to work like that. Everyone seemed to keep their ideasto themselves. It might not have been intentional sometimes people are araid to

    speak their mind, I dont know. It was the teacher doing all the talking.

    The biggest dierence is denitely time. At Hyper, I eel we had more time to workon projects, and especially more time to think about them. I miss that time as I thinkits great or creativity, but I know its not always realistic to have that much time in abusiness.

    I can refect now on my naivet and lack o knowledge o the digital industries beore

    I started the course. I am a million times more cluedup now than I was beore, dueto the course. I eel like the course was a talent manager as it made me realise howmany great skills I have but didnt ocus on beore. I got great condence out o Hyper Island that has given me an attitude o noear and that anything is possible.     It can be a bit tricky because it is supposed to be designed by industry and beindustryled but when industry is putting demands to you that you know, based on yourexperience, arent really the answer, are you going to try and be clever and think youknow better?.. So, they were saying, we want people to know Flash and you then lookat the course and think this is going to be a threeyear programme and there is nothing

    Universities are getting better in terms o validation but traditionally when I started it

    was a yearlong process to validate something. So, i you wanted to make a changeto the course plan that was more than 25 per cent, it took a year to rewrite it, have itvalidated by an external validation board and all that. So, it was a very slow process.Universities are getting better with that so some can revalidate something in two orthree months. Still, even over six months things can happen in the world around you thatmakes something you planned towards the end, like the last couple o weeks o yourteaching makes it slightly irrelevant. So, i you plan that too specically in the ocialdocumentation then you are stuck. I tried to see how uzzy I could be in my module

    With larger cohorts with your centrally timetabled systems, having a whole day withthe students where they are together as a team in a Hyper Island type environmentis very, very hard to replicate now in a mass HE system. Some universities do it, someuniversities are still retaining creative programmes where there is only maybe 30

    What Hyper Island does is that it creates the right environment or the students to learn.It teaches them how to learn rom the experiences that they are going through but then

    The group dynamics that is mostly what Hyper Island is. Working with groups, workingwith change, working with confict and you have an open space and you are learningwhat you want to learn and developing what you want to develop. Education needs to

    understand that you can do that in a structured and supportive way. It might sound likechaos but Hyper Island is in act very structured.H I u
