What is Braking ? Braking is the Action of Stopping the running vehicle. Action of braking is done by using Brake. In Brake The kinetic energy due to motion of the vehicle is dissipated in the form of heat energy due to friction between moving parts (Between wheel Drum and Brake Shoe).

Page 3: Hydraulic braking system and components

Function of Brake – There are two main functions of brakes : To slow down or stop the vehicle in the shortest possible time at the time of need. To control the speed of vehicle at turns and also at the time of driving down on a hill slope.

Classification of Brakes –

On The Basis Of Method Of Actuation-

Foot Brake Hand Brake

On The Basis Of Mode Of Operation-

Mechanical Brakes Hydraulic Brakes Air Brakes Vacuum Brakes Electric Brakes.

On The Basis Of Method Of Application Of Braking Contact-

Internally – Expanding Brakes Externally – Contracting Brakes

What is Hydraulic Braking System?Hydraulic Braking System is the System Which used Hydraulic Fluid to build up the pressure for Braking Action. History-

Fred Duesenberg originated hydraulic brakes in 1914.

Then In 1918 Malcolm Lougheed Developed full Hydraulic Braking System.

Page 6: Hydraulic braking system and components

PRINCIPLE OF WORKING-Hydraulic brakes work on the principle of Pascal’s law.

Pascal law states that “pressure at on Incompressible fluid

is equal in all directions”.

Page 7: Hydraulic braking system and components

TYPES OF HYDRAULIC BRAKE- There are Two types of Hydraulic Breaking System.

1. Expanding Drum Type hydraulic Brake.

2. Disc Type hydraulic Brake.

Page 8: Hydraulic braking system and components

COMPONENTS OF DRUM TYPE BRAKE SYSTEM-

Master Cylinder.

Backing Plate.

Brake Drum.

Wheel Cylinder.

Brake Shoe .

Return spring.

Page 9: Hydraulic braking system and components

Master Cylinder-

Master Cylinder is Heart of Hydraulic Braking System.

It pressurized the Braking Fluid Which is in Reservoir to

actuate the Wheel Cylinder for braking Action.

Page 10: Hydraulic braking system and components

Tandam Master Cylinder-

Tandam Master Cylinder is

Latest Development in

hydraulic Braking System.

It reduced Risk of Brake

Failing.

There are two Different

section in tandam Master

Cylinder for pressurized the

Brake Fluid.

Page 11: Hydraulic braking system and components

Backing Plate-

Backing Plate is Base for

other Component.

Wheel Cylinder, brake

shoe, Parking brake

mechanism are mounted

on it.

It should be strong and

wear resistant.

Page 12: Hydraulic braking system and components

Brake Drum-

Drum is rotated with wheel and Axle.

Brake Shoe are pressed against the Brake Drum as Beake Applied.

It is heat conductive.

Page 13: Hydraulic braking system and components

Wheel cylinder-

There is seperate wheel Cylinder for each wheel .

It function is to exert force on Brake shoe.

It consist of two piston one on each side.

Page 14: Hydraulic braking system and components

Brake Shoe-

There are two Brake Shoe

for each wheel.

Friction Material is at outer

lining of Brake Shoe.

It should be heat and wear

resistant.

Page 15: Hydraulic braking system and components

Return Spring-

Return Spring pull the

brake Shoe back as Brake

Pedal is released.

Page 16: Hydraulic braking system and components

Working of Drum type Hydraulic Brake-Brake Pedal Pressed.

Brake Fluid Pressurized in Master cylinder.

Pressurized fluid is travel through hose pipes.

Pistons in wheel cylinder are actuate and pressed brake shoe against wheel Drum.

Due to Friction between Brake Shoe and wheel Drum Braking action is performed.

Page 17: Hydraulic braking system and components

Component of Disc type Hydraulic brake system-

Brake Rotor. Brake

Caliper. Brake pad.

Page 18: Hydraulic braking system and components

Brake Rotor- It is component against which Brake pad is

Appiled. Brake Rotor is made of Grey iron or special alloy. It rotate with wheel. Hole are drill on Brake Rotor for heat dissipation.

Brake Pad- Brake Pad is Frictional Component of Disc brake. Generally there are two Brake Pad per Caliper in

Disc Brake. It is palced in front of caliper piston.

Page 19: Hydraulic braking system and components

Brake caliper- It is assembly which house the Brake pad

and Piston. It is made from plastic , aluminium or

chrome plated steel. Two Types- Fixed and Floating caliper.

Page 20: Hydraulic braking system and components

Working of Disc Type Hydraulic Brake-Brake Pedal Pressed.

Brake Fluid Pressurized in Master cylinder.

Pressurized fluid is travel through hose pipes.

Thus, this Pressurized fluid press Brake pad against Brake Rotor.

Due to Friction between Brake pad and Brake rotor action is performed.

Valves Used in Hydraulic Brake System-

1.Proportioning valve or equalizer valve-

2. Pressure differential valve-

3. Combination valve

Page 22: Hydraulic braking system and components

Brake Fluid-

Brake Fluid is Typical Type of Fluid which used

in Hydraulic Brake system.

Brake Fluid is incompressible.

Glycol- ether, Castor oil , Mineral Oil are

example of Brake Fluid.

Page 23: Hydraulic braking system and components

Characteristic of Brake Fluid-

Boiling Point

Viscosity

Corrosion Resistance

Compressibility

Page 24: Hydraulic braking system and components

Advantage and Disadvantage Of Hydraulic Brake-ADVANTAGES-

Equal braking action on all wheels. Increased braking force. Low wear rate of brake linings. Increased mechanical advantage.  Better stopping power than the other Brakes

DISADVANTAGES-

Whole braking system fails due to leakage of fluid from brake linings

Complex construction. More maintenance than other system

Application -

Automotive Brake-

The Hydraulic Braking System is use in car , Jeep ,

Mini Truck o in Buses
