1950’s British rockabilly style takes over!

Inspired by the 1950’s cultural phenomenon that took place in England, Hyden Yoo created a collection based on the

Edwardian style of the time that was popular with the British youth subculture that eventually associated a bit with American

rock & roll.

The palette is comprised of dark purple, rust, ink, and charcoal & is complimented by shades of powdered pink, burnt olive &

a cool heather grey. Fabric-combos can be seen throughout the women’s collection from burnt-jersey combined with washed

cupro, wool knits with hairy angora blocking, soft jersey laced with sheer mesh & moleskin lined with shearling. For men,

color blocking, casual styling & relaxed tailoring are predominant throughout.

I thought all the wilderness of America was in the West till the Ghost of the

Susquehanna showed me different. No, there is a wilderness in the East; it’s

the same wilderness Ben Franklin plodded in the oxcart days when he was a

postmaster, the same as it was when George Washington was a wildbuck Indian-

fighter, when Daniel Boone told stories by Pennsylvania lamps and promised

to find the Gap, when Bradford build his road and men whooped her up in log

cabins. There were not great Arizona spaces for the little man, just the bushy

wilderness of eastern Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia, the backroads,

the black-tar roads that curve among the mournful rivers like Susquehanna,

Monongahela, old Potomac and Monocacy.

The long, woolen drape coats favored by Teddy Boys were not just a badge

of recognition, but also proved useful for hiding alcohol or knives; while the

bright-colored socks were worn by some to mock convention, but by others to

show gang affiliation. Teddy Boys and Girls were at the epicenter of a counter-

cultural wave that began frothing across England in the mid-1950’s - starting

as a grass-roots inversion of the Edwardian style preferred by Saville Row and

evolving into a street-glam homage to rock ‘n roll.
