The Huskies ClubSupporting Michigan Tech’s Student-Athletes Since 1956

Dear Huskies Fan, The exhausted skier gives 110 percent as she crosses the finish line. The forward fakes her defender and drives the lane for a basket. The receiver dives over the corner cone for a Sherman Field touchdown. The defenseman takes the puck away from a breaking winger and saves the game.

Jenna Klein conducts blood pressure research, is an Academic All-American, and qualifies for the NCAA Nordic skiing championships three years in a row. Katie Wysocky writes for the Lode, carries a great GPA, and makes All-GLIAC in basketball. Keith White is a first-team Academic All-American while becoming the football Huskies all-time leader with 2,377 receiving yards. Eli Vlaisavljevich is a stalwart on the blueline while attaining a Goldwater Scholarship, Michigan Tech’s Provost’s Award for Scholarship, and ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District First Team honors.

Our student-athletes succeed in and out of the classroom. The Huskies Club funds scholarships that allow these students to pursue their dreams. You receive perks, but the best part of being a member of the Huskies Club is knowing that you are making great moments in sports history possible by supporting our student-athletes.

Thank you for your support as you continue the tradition of athletic and academic excellence at Michigan Tech.

Steve Nordstrom Director of Athletic Development

Yesterday, Today, and TomorrowIn 1956, legendary hockey coach John MacInnes and local contractor Herman “Winks” Gundlach formed the Huskies Club to raise funds for athletic grant-in-aid scholarships. Today, donations to the Huskies Club by alumni, friends, and community members continue to strengthen all Michigan Tech athletic programs and provide scholarships for the student-athletes.

Becoming a member of the Huskies Club is easy, and giving levels start at just $100 per year. Gifts to the Huskies Club have helped raise a total of more than $1 million dollars for Michigan Tech athletics in the last five years. Last year, there were more than 600 members in the Huskies Club.

An individual athletic scholarship costs approximately $28,000 in 2009-10. Recent funding has also focused on improved recruiting opportunities, team travel, equipment, facility improvements, and athletic department special projects.

“Both Art and I are firm believers that academics should

be number one for our athletes. We are glad that our coaches are mindful of the classroom performance of each person on the team. We believe it makes a better team.”

—Phyllis Boutilier and Art WeaverThirty-year donors to the Huskies Club

“The scholarship funding we receive from the Huskies Club makes it possible for student-athletes to pursue the tradition of academic and athletic excellence at Michigan Tech. Giving to the Huskies Club or a specific sport helps student-athletes compete for championships and brings pride to the University, alumni, and fans.”

—Alicia Schneider ’09 Member, 2008-09 Elite 8 Basketball Team

Ways to Join the Huskies ClubAll gifts of $100 or more to Michigan Tech athletics will be recognized by the Huskies Club, and supporters can enjoy membership benefits.

Matching Gifts can double or triple your gift. To find out if your company participates, visit www.mtf.mtu.edu/giving/matching.php.

Planned Gifts allow Michigan Tech athletics to meet its goals while allowing donors to manage their assets. Planned gifts include life insurance policies, bequests, annuities, trusts, and many other IRA charitable gift options.

Major Gifts are donations of $25,000 or more that can include naming opportunities, capital project funding, or establishing an endowment. Major gifts create new opportunities for our student-athletes and transform the quality of the student-athlete experience.

“Students need to have a well-rounded college experience,

and varsity athletics contributes to their education by promoting

teamwork, quick decision making, leadership on and off the field, as well as keeping their bodies and minds physically fit. These same skills are important to being successful as students and after they graduate

from Michigan Tech. Go Huskies!”—Dana ’80 and Mark Johnson

NCAA GuidelinesPer NCAA rules, all contributors to any athletic program automatically become representatives of the athletic department and remain so permanently. Representatives are prohibited from participating in any recruiting activities and from providing any benefits to prospective or current student-athletes, unless expressly authorized by the department. Any violation of this basic rule may result in a permanent loss of membership benefits and priorities. Since we value greatly the relationship between the department and it representatives, we strongly encourage questions and inquires to the department’s Compliance Office regarding limitations and responsibilities of Huskies Club membership.
