April 2015 Published on 4 April And yet, our hearts have been warmed in recent months by the good news stories. In February Katie Cutler heard the sad story of Alan Barnes, an elderly visually impaired man mugged outside his home. Her fundraising website made over £300,000 after the news spread on social media! Then she turned her attention to others and similar feats followed. Last month there was the story of London's Dancing Man, an overweight gentleman who was mocked by onlookers as he danced at a party. They tweeted a photo with a mean remark. But Cassandra Fairbanks in Los Angeles got wind of it, via social media, and set out to put this wrong right. She managed to track down 'Sean' via twitter and has organised a mega dance party with the likes of superstars Pharrell Williams, Moby and others. Those I have mentioned are the big news stories. But every day in our lives and in our communities are similar stories. People looking out for one another and doing what they can to turn sad and difficult situations into hopeful and positive ones. The human spirit strives to make bad things better. God's spirit yearns for this too and I believe inspires us to create hope out of despair. That's what Easter is all about. On Good Friday the horror and sadness of an innocent man, Jesus, dying on the cross cannot fail to touch us. But the story doesn't end there. Easter Sunday comes and new life and love breaks through once more as Jesus emerges from the tomb and walks the earth again sharing God's love and compassion and hope with us all. The bible often talks about God turning despair into dancing, mourning into joy. It can and does happen. All the time. So this Easter season open your eyes to those moments, big and small, where hope springs from despair all around us. And give thanks. May you have a joyful Easter time! Sorrow into Dancing

I am what Marketing people call a 'laggard'. When it comes to technology I'm often one of the last to jump on board and I have only recently signed up to Facebook and Twitter resisting for a long time for all sorts of reasons.

To pick up a theme of my Methodist colleague on the last Hurst Green News, the use and benefit of social media such as Facebook and Twitter divides opinion. Is it a good thing? Weren't we better off before all these distractions? Not to mention the risks of those shady characters who pretend to be someone they are not and cause all sorts of trouble.

AGGIE’S HALL - THEN AND NOW

I wonder how many mothers remember taking their babies to be weighed in the Baby Clinic in Aggies on Monday afternoons and what about the Toy Library, held in the hall once a month? All sorts of exciting toys, stored under the stage, were lent out for a small charge. There was Old Time Dancing with Sally Tonkin, Weightwatchers, Wedding Receptions, Guides with Mrs Koeltz and Brownies with Mrs King. The Scouts, Cubs and Beavers all used the hall over the years. There were many other events too numerous to mention.

Now to the present time - Aggies on the Green Coffee Shop continues to thrive. ‘Children in Need’ is a favourite annual event with Matthew Leadbeater in charge. The popular Village Fair continues to be held on the Green on the 3rd Saturday in September every year thanks to the hardworking group who run it and the Coffee Shop Ladies who provide the delicious teas. We still miss the Hurst Green Amenities Association; it was such a fund of information.

The Hall continues to be well used with Power Yoga, Tai Chi and Fitsteps on Mondays, Baby Sensory Class, Yoga and Line Dancing on Tuesdays, Coffee Shop open on Wednesdays from 10.30am - 2pm, Ballet Class for children in the afternoon and the Hurst Green Gardening Club on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. Runners Yoga is held on Thursday mornings, also a newly formed Post Natal Exercise Class. The Brownies and Guides use the hall in the evening with Pilates on Friday morning. We are also kept busy with Children’s parties up to the age of 11 at the weekends.

But! We do miss all the Saturday Jumble Sales! Where have they gone? Maybe discarded clothes are taken to Charity shops now? Or are all the ladies of a certain age, who tirelessly helped over the years, giving up with nobody to take over from them? Whatever the reason, we only have one jumble sale booked this year. Gone are the queues on Saturday afternoons. It was hard work and exhausting - so maybe the end of an era!

GARDENING TIPS

“In like a Lion and out like a Lamb” is very apt this spring as it is a very changeable month for temperatures. This is a good time to keep weeds under control which seem to be really rampant but are easily dug up after so

many rainy evenings. There is so much to do this month with planting chitted potatoes and an exciting time with indoor seedlings putting on good growth. House plants need a little more water as they too are ready to spring to life! It is well worth protecting tree blossom from late frosts with fleece or plastic bubble wrap as an alternative.

This is a good time to mulch your roses (which have now been pruned) and encourage good soil structure and promote better flowering during the summer, weeds will also be kept at bay. Tie in rambling and climbing roses which will encourage flower growth later in the summer. Lawns are ready for their first trim with the cutters raised. Acid loving shrubs in our area, such as Camellias, Rhododendrons and Azaleas will benefit from mulching to prevent flowering being impaired during dryer summer months. Lavenders can be lightly cut back to prevent them becoming leggy and I also cut back our Passion Flower which puts on good growth in early summer. Clematis can be cut back to about 20 cms from the ground and hardy fuchsias can be cut back to ground level.

Hurst Green Gardening Club

Winter seems to have passed by Hurst Green with only a few frosts. I leave winter bird feeders to my neighbours as my garden is like a large buffet of plants for any and all insects. A bit like a motorway stop off, with snacks for the birds and a quick wash in my pond or variable depth bird baths. They seem to have morning and evening rush hours, just like us. As there is always something in flower, even the bees pop in on a warm day.

So where do I fit in? I make no claims to be a gardener. I’m just the housekeeper, but whatever I contribute will be returned in abundance. Nothing is wasted, prunings and seedlings are potted on, some to sell at the Gardening Club meetings. If you come along you may even be able to take some home for a nominal cost towards our funds, which pay for speakers on a wide variety of subjects, some not always immediately connected to gardening.

You may know that green potatoes can make you ill, but so can strawberries and broad beans. If you came to our February meeting, you will have found this out, and a few other horror stories.

Watch out for posters on local notice boards and come along to find our what goes on behind the curtains. Brian Parrott
