Sunday, May 31, 2015 • 2 p.m. 5225 Greenlee Drive Fort Worth, Texas ere is little like having a place to call home. Rev. Dr. Joseph Kazadi was forced to leave the Democratic Republic of the Congo out of fear for his life after speaking about injustices in his home country. He came to the United States as a refugee seeking a peaceful existence for himself and his family. Since coming to the United States, Joseph has had a fervent desire to have a place he and his family can call home. Last summer, First United Methodist Church of Hurst made a significant contribution toward providing Rev. Joseph Kazadi and his family a permanent home through our 2014 Summer Missions offering and by helping to build his new home through Trinity Habitat for Humanity. Joseph has expressed his sincere appreciation for his new home and the wonderful blessing it is for him and his family. Joseph and his family were gladly able to assume ownership of his home and occupy the dwelling during April. To celebrate God’s blessings, the labor, and the gifts given, a Service of Blessing of a Home will be held at Rev. Dr. Joseph Kazadi’s new home on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at 2 p.m. ere will be a brief reception on behalf of Joseph and his family to thank this congregation for their significant contribution. My coming on staff reflects a new ministry focus for 18-25 year old young adults as they transition from high school into college and the work place. I wanted to take this opportunity tell a little about myself and my passion for this age group. I was born and raised as a pastor’s daughter in San Antonio. After my freshman year in high school, my family moved to the not-so- big city of Big Lake, Texas. After graduating high school, I attended McMurry University in Abilene, where I met my husband, Brandon, at a church college group. After I graduated from McMurry University with an English degree and Brandon finished his Masters in Accounting degree at Abilene Christian University, we moved to North Richland Hills for Brandon’s job. On our first Sunday in NRH this past July, our very first day actually, we visited FUMC Hurst. I will never forget walking into this church for the first time and being overwhelmed by members welcoming and offering information about FUMC Hurst. Looking back, it was easy to see why having a “radical welcome” is a cornerstone of this church. In September, after Brandon and I joined the church, I started working with the young adults and their Sunday school class. Having been a preacher’s kid, I have always felt most at home in church and felt the call to ministry early on. College ministry is particularly near and dear to my heart because I feel that so many life-changing decisions are made during this life stage and without God helping direct these decisions, poor choices can be made that have a lasting effect. at is where my passion for this age group comes from. Having a strong foundation in Christ and having a supportive group of Christians surrounding you is vital to making not only good decisions, but Christ-centered decisions. Support for this age group is something that is extremely lacking in the Methodist church overall, and I am proud to be a part of a church that is intentional about rejuvenating our church body with the next generation of leaders. I am excited to see what God has in store for them. Last Fall, Brandon and I attended “Dare to Dream, a Bible study for young married couples led by Rev. Philip Rhodes. It was about creating a life mission statement that would speak not only about your passions, but about using your passions to glorify God. Philip talked about having a God-sized dream, and that your life mission statement should guide you toward achieving that dream. I have been thinking about that for a few months, and now through prayer and discernment, I feel that God has given me the following mission in life: “To create and foster an environment within the church where community and relationships can thrive, thus opening the door for discussions about Christ and salvation for young people.” I am so excited to be leading the Young Adult Ministry because I believe this is where God has called me to serve and to make a lasting impact on the Kingdom. A Commitment to Children and their FamiliesOne of the goals we have for 2016 is to transition Rev. Holly Dittrich out of children’s ministry into an Executive/Preaching role here at our church. This is a role similar to the position I held prior to Dr. Mike McKee being elected Bishop. It includes preaching responsibilities as well as a heavy supervisory component. I can’t think of anyone better suited for this than Rev. Holly Dittrich, and I look forward to her transition into this vital role at the First United Methodist Church. This transition requires that we search for and hire Holly’s replacement in Children’s Ministry. Please know that we remain steadfastly committed to

excellence in Children’s Ministry. We have contracted with Ministry Architects to help us facilitate this search. The process begins with an assessment of where we currently are and where we want to grow over the next two to three years in our ministry with children and their families. This assessment period will take place May 17-19, 2015. Please watch the announcements, enews and website for more details.Ministry Architects will send us two consultants who will meet with a variety of different groups of people related to children’s ministry and help us plan a way forward in the hiring process. Some of these groups will be

open to everyone and some are reserved for leadership. After the assessment, we will move into the search and interview process.I am excited about this process and believe that it will help us go to the next level in children’s ministry. Some will want to know how Holly feels about this. I can say, without reservation, that she is excited about this transition as well. As for children’s ministry, Holly will maintain contact in a supervisory capacity. I know you will join me in prayer for Holly as she transitions, for our church as we discern, and for the person who will join our staff that we have yet to meet.

POPS CONCERTChancel Choir Summer

May 2015 3

The FUMC  Hurst Lenten Prayer Breakfast was held on March 21, 2015 in the Fellowship Hall and was co-sponsored by members of FUMC Hurst United Methodist Women and Prayer Ministry Team. The bountiful buffet breakfast enjoyed by all was prepared and served by members of the Point of Grace Sunday School Class. Reverend Marilyn Jones, Senior Pastor of Meadowbrook United Methodist Church, was the speaker for the morning. In the spirit of our Lenten theme “Bridges,” Rev. Jones’ message spoke about prayer being an essential “bridge” to God. Believing that prayer is a central element in the Christian life, both corporate and individual, the FUMC Hurst Prayer Ministry seeks

to provide opportunities to grow in prayer and to incorporate prayer into every aspect of our community life. If you would like more information about the Prayer Ministry at FUMC Hurst, please contact Rev. Donna McKee at 817.282.7384 x38 or [email protected].

When winter hits hard, churches open their doors to the homeless and offer them more than just a place to spend the night.Room in the Inn is a national program that provides the homeless with a safe place to sleep, two hot meals and friendly conversation. Participating churches treat them as “guests,” inviting them to stay at the church one night a week during summer and winter, the harshest seasons. The Room in the Inn program began in Nashville, Tennessee in 1985, during severe cold and hot months. Today in Nashville, over 150 churches participate. In Fort Worth, the Room in the Inn program began in 2000, and now involves sixteen churches, four of them United Methodist Churches. During the hottest months, July and August and the coldest months, December, January and

February, the churches host from five to fifteen homeless men or women each week.At Richland Hills United Methodist Church, ten men are hosted each Tuesday night during these months. These men are screened by caseworkers at the Day Resource Center, near the Presbyterian Night Shelter. They are screened for any potential problems such as mental illness, alcohol, drugs, communicable diseases. They can shower, do their laundry and leave their possessions in a secure area at the Day Resource Center. They are picked up before 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and returned to the Day Resource Center after 7 a.m. on Wednesdays. In February, Point of Grace Sunday School Class partnered with Jack Teddlie at Richland Hills United Methodist Church

to serve a delicious evening meal and visit with their guests. We provided the meal and served it, then sat down with the men for conversation. Richland Hills has “inn keepers” who spend the night. If you’d like more information about this program, please contact Jack Teddlie at [email protected] or Debby Hoover at [email protected]. We hope you’ll consider joining us on one of the upcoming weeks this summer!

A young boy walked to school crying with the tears rolling down his cheeks.  He cried all the way down the long hallway to his class.  His friends patted him and asked, “Why are you crying?  Can we help you?”  But the boy did not answer.  He just shook his head and continued to cry.  When he got to his classroom, the tears were still rolling down his cheeks and he was still crying. His teacher said to him, “Oh, my goodness!  Why are you crying?  How can I help you?”  But the boy did not answer.  He just shook his head and continued to cry.  His friends could not help.  His teacher could not help.  So the principal of the school was called to the classroom.  The principal knelt down on one knee and asked, “Son, why are you crying.  How can we help?”  But the boy still did not answer.  He just shook his head and continued to cry.  The kind principal took the boy’s hand and walked with him to the school nurse’s office.  She knelt beside him, wiped his tears, and in her kind and gentle voice she asked, “Son, tell me why you are crying, so we can help you.”

He softly replied, “My shoes are making my feet hurt so much I just have to cry.”  Off came the

shoes. Indeed, his feet had been squeezed into a pair of very small shoes. The school nurse said, “We will help you feel better.”  She picked up her phone and called an Adopt-A-School friend from the

First United Methodist Church of Hurst.  “We need some new shoes, size 2, for a young boy at our school. Can you help?” And she heard the answer, “Of course.”   Now the little boy does not cry on the way to school. He does not cry all the way down the hall and he does not cry in the classroom.  He has a brand new pair of blue shoes – size 2 … and an extra pair  for his little brother.Thank you to the FUMC Hurst Adopt A School Ministry. April is Volunteer Appreciation Month! Thanks to all of Mission Central’s volunteers for their hard work!In the past year, Mission Central has completed construction projects at both the Coat of Many Colors and the Village Pantry/Administrative Offices in order to keep up with our recent growth. These projects have provided volunteers, customers, and guests with a better environment for serving our neighbors. Now that we have the space needed to keep up with our current level of service, Mission Central is looking to the future.  The Board of Directors has initiated a strategic planning process to

design Mission Central’s direction for the next 5 years. Our new Village Pantry facility has space to offer classes and community meetings, and our new full-time Director of Family Services is available to guide volunteers as they provide additional resources to our guests. The Strategic Planning Committee is evaluating what classes and resources would be most useful to those in our neighborhood and looking for ways to collaborate with other community organizations who provide complementary services. In the coming months, Mission Central will be sharing our vision for the future with our friends and

supporters. If you’d like to keep up with Mission Central’s news, please be sure to subscribe to the monthly News Central newsletter at www.missioncentraltx.org. (Click on the “P” in the upper right-hand corner to subscribe to the newsletter.)Anyone who is curious about the work of Mission Central is welcome to visit the Village Pantry to learn more.  Volunteers and financial support are always needed as the organization continues to grow and serve families in Hurst, Euless and Bedford. Contact Catherine Hollis at 817.595.0011 x105 or [email protected] to set up a time to tour our facilities.

Spend some quiet time today thinking about a subject that might make you rather uncomfortable. Can you imagine how you would feel if you were no longer able to come to church? Maybe you would miss your Sunday school class friends or your Bible Study group. It’s difficult to imagine how it would feel to be unable to come to church and participate in worship and other areas of service and ministry. What if you were not able to receive Holy Communion at the table with your FUMC Hurst church family? This scenario is a reality for a number of our own church members. Due to health related issues and mobility limitations, many of our members can no longer attend church or participate in the ministries of the church. At a time in their lives when they need the support of their church most, they are isolated.

These dear, faithful friends are living at home alone, or they are living in a care facility with other folks who have health challenges of their own. These realities can be extremely difficult to adapt to for someone who is experiencing declining health. We have partners in ministry who strive to make sure that our home-centered friends do not feel isolated. Our Caring Friends program matches individuals who are home-centered with volunteers who visit them monthly. Sunday school class members often visit home-centered friends. Stephen Ministers provide ongoing support for individuals who are experiencing difficulty coping with daily reality. There are other ministries of FUMC Hurst that touch the lives of our home-centered friends. One vital ministry area of this church has been the home-centered communion that volunteers have

faithfully taken to our home-centered friends during the first week of Advent and during Holy Week. This ministry has been ongoing for several years. While this ministry has been good, we would like to make it better. We would like to offer communion to our home-centered friends (at least) three times per year. In order to be equipped to make that happen, we will need a pool of available individuals who would be willing to work in teams providing Holy Communion for our home-centered friends.I invite you to prayerfully consider this very important ministry. If you feel that God is calling you to give a little of your time, energy, and heart, I know someone who would like to invite you to sit at their table. For more information contact Cathy Cartmill at 817-282-7384 x22 or [email protected].
