What is a Chamber of Commerce, Anyway? So you may have noticed that our region

is currently in the midst of growing. The staff of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce would like to use this particular piece of real estate to remind you why chambers of commerce exist and what yours is up to.

In the United States, there are about 7,000 chambers of commerce serving local businesses, from very large corporations to one-man (or woman) startups. There is naturally confusion around what chambers actually do because chambers in various towns focus on different things and operate in different ways.

Simply stated: A chamber of commerce is a localized business advocacy association.

Chamber missions vary, but they all tend to focus to some degree on five primary goals:

n Building communities that attract residents, visitors and investors — through public and private partnerships. (Economic development work plays a large role here.)

n Promoting those communities. Serving as an information center and assisting the Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB).

n Striving to ensure future prosperity via a pro-business climate. We want to make it easy to do business in our community!

n Representing the unified voice of the employer community to local, state and federal government. (There’s power in numbers.) We do this also through a Government Affairs Committee & by helping to stage Hunt County Days where businesses, citizens, other Hunt County chambers and elected officials go down to Austin together ahead of the legislative session every other year.

n Providing accelerated access to resources and relationships to market & advertise your business — networking!

Most chambers are led by private-sector employers, self-funded and organized around boards of volunteers and independent members.

They share a common ambition for sustained prosperity of their community/region, built on thriving employers. Most are ardent proponents of the free market, resisting attempts to overly burden private-sector enterprise and investment. For more information, visit ACCE.org.

Your Greenville Chamber of Commerce

is organized around a member-elected Board of Directors, currently led by Bob Landon of Landon Winery and soon to be William Morgan of Lone Star Credit Union near the end of October. The board is charged with setting forth a program of work that will accomplish the prescribed mission of the chamber. This mission is carried out by an army of volunteers and a handful of staff.

The activities of the chamber itself are privately funded by membership dues, sponsorships, community investors and program fees. Chambers are not funded by taxes. Although we are frequently confused with government, we are not an arm of the government.

Economic development corporations and convention and visitors bureau activity are funded by private investors and through public tax dollars that the state and city either operate internally or award through contracts. Tax dollars that fund these functions are highly restricted and reserved for specific activities.

While these details are important, that’s also the boring stuff that keeps all successful organizations humming along. The exciting part is what happens when the “program of work” is properly executed.

If you are a member business owner, you likely remember the day the chamber ambassadors showed up with giant scissors to celebrate with you and cut the ribbon in front of your new enterprise.

If you know a Leadership Hunt County graduate, you’ve listened to them tell you about how this program changed their view of Greenville and Hunt County and you’ve been told by them that you need to apply. You do. Applications will open next June 2020.

Is that all we do? Not even close. We make it a point to build and maintain

relationships with local, state and federal decision makers who will take our calls when our members have an issue affecting their ability to do business. We are business-to-business connectors and business-to-consumer connectors. We are community builders and we like new ideas.

We partner with educators to make sure we are supporting the future workforce in our area. We are working around the clock to attract new dollars to this region and to your business.

Visitors, serviced by the Chamber front

desk and by the Greenville CVB, host events and conventions, spend nights in our hotels, eat in our restaurants, buy gifts in our retail establishments and put gas in their cars.

The Greenville Board of Development partnership is helping to expand business, bring in new businesses and create jobs. They help us with job fairs and are marketing Greenville to site selectors around the world.

Business and volunteer awards — we do those. (In our opinion, most business owners and managers deserve an award!)

Startup support? The No. 1 Small Business Development Center office in Texas is inside our office. And its services are free.

Networking? Advertising opportunities? Yes. Online resources? Yes. Quarterly Membership Luncheons with varying topics related to good business? We do all these and more.

Ask us why we love our jobs. We’re serious — come see us and tell us what keeps you awake at night. Help us understand your needs so that we can adjust our offerings and remain relevant amidst a changing business landscape. Or better yet — tell us where you are, and we’ll come to you.

The Greenville Chamber office is located at 2713 Stonewall St., just steps from the Hunt County courthouse and a developing downtown that offers a winery, restaurants, shopping, live music, and more. Find us on Facebook. Send us an email at [email protected] or give us a call at 903-455-1510.

Yes. We are open for business. We’ve made it simple for you to invest with us!

Dear Hunt County Businesses,

We are blessed beyond measure to have this opportunity to launch a brand new way to communicate what is happening in businesses throughout Hunt County. As we worked through this first Hunt County Business Journal inaugural issue, we realized just how many opportunities we have to help local businesses thrive here.

One of the best things about this publication that I am excited about is that it will be available both online and in print. It will also serve as a key item in communicating with those that are considering relocation to this area and will be instantly available by link to

those located in other cities and states.

I am taking the time during this first edition to communicate our intent, as we go forward. Your Greenville Chamber is a 550 member strong business advocacy organization. We get to get up every day and work with so many wonderful businesses! There are many great stories to tell here in our business community. Sometimes, businesses forget to communicate those stories or think they aren’t important and so many get left untold.

Many of us get wrapped up in the throes of running our day to day operations, we forget to communicate to the public an important anniversary or a change of ownership. How about that valuable employee that has worked for you for 25 years and maybe has a side business or neat hobby? You might want to communicate something about how much you appreciate him/her.

Truth is, businesses go through mergers, acquisitions, changes in management, remodels, expansions, downsizing, product updates, retirement and the list goes on. Have you been telling your story? It’s all newsworthy to us!

In this publication, we also want to give other fellow Chambers of Commerce located in Hunt County opportunities to tell the news they celebrate within their local communities. The second issue is planned to come out January 2020 and we will open even more doors with that issue. Be thinking of what news you might want to tell throughout Hunt County.

For members of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, please check your business listings and categories in the rear of this journal. We’ve spent the better part of the last 120 days working with you to clean up our database. This has been all to make this a vital tool for you. January will be here before you know it. For those that are not in this listing but would like to be, please contact us at the Greenville Chamber and we will be happy to show you the ropes of how low cost marketing and membership work. We’d love the opportunity to get to know you as well!

In closing, I would like to give a big thanks to the Herald Banner for helping us learn how to produce and distribute this new tool. Kudos to the staff that helped us. In reality, there are many businesses and people that help us. You all deserve a great big thanks too.

Hunt County, let’s rise together!Byron TaylorPresident & CEOGreenville Chamber of Commerce

Each community has businesses that go above and beyond in multiple

ways. Nissan of Greenville, located at 6403 I-30 and inside one of the newest and most modern automotive buildings in town, is one of those businesses. In fact, their dealership was honored to be a recipient of the 2018 Nissan Award of Excellence. The award recognizes and rewards individual dealerships and their employees for outstanding performance in sales, customer satisfaction, and most importantly, owner loyalty.

One thing that makes this particular Nissan dealership shine is the fact that they are a family business. That means the actual owners play an active role in the day to day operations. Owner and Executive Manager, Mike Chouteau, along with his wife and Public Relations Director, Robin Chouteau, both have lifelong experience on the floors of dealerships. As a matter of fact, Robin Chouteau grew up in the automotive industry. These two, along with their General Manager who has 18 years of experience, Bryan Hall, are what keeps their dealership humming like a fine tuned engine.

Speaking of fine tuning, their service department is a state of the art facility with the latest in diagnostic equipment to assist in determining any technical problem they come across. From routine maintenance to complete overhauls, their super clean bays and organized mechanics are equipped to handle everything. With cars today and their complex systems, that peace of mind comes in handy, especially after purchasing one of their new or certified pre-owned inventory. When it comes to maintenance, if you happen to be a do-it-yourself person, their parts department carries dozens of original equipment

manufacturer parts right behind their onsite counter.

Nissan of Greenville helps us and our surrounding communities in others ways, too. You can often see Mike, Robin, and their team supporting future generations, and local events and charities that have a direct impact to residents through volunteerism, sponsorships and donations.

They support surrounding independent school districts including GISD, QISD, CMISD, and CISD. They participate in Women in Need, Remember for Me, CASA, Children’s Advocacy Center, Hunt County Kids, Bras for the Cause, Boys & Girls Club, Keep Greenville Beautiful and more.

Additionally, they are avid supporters of the business community through the Greenville Chamber of Commerce and are highly visible at business events. On occasion, you might even run into Robin with her chic dog named CoCo.

With all of this, you might think there is no more to say about this wonderful local business. But, there are at least these things: Their focus as they move forward will be to build their business on the talent they have. It’s an outstanding place to work. They encourage their staff to advance through training opportunities, certification processes and their service staff are certified factory trained. They care about their customers before, during and after the sale. They are nice, friendly people who would like to do good business with you.

Don’t be shy to drop by and say hello, if for nothing more than just to look at their new or pre-owned inventory. You just might fall in love with the Nissan brand and make a friend or two in the process.

Next Board Chairman takes reins in October

President & CEO of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, Byron Taylor, recently completed year one of Institute for Organization Management.

Institute is the professional development program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation. It is the premier nonprofit professional development program for association and chamber professionals, fostering individual growth through interactive learning and networking opportunities. It is a four year, one week a year, course of intense learning.

Although these courses take place in multiple locations in the country throughout the year, Taylor chose to go to the Northeast Institute which took place in early August at Villanova University in Pennsylvania. He is scheduled to go to year two in July, 2020. Graduates of this program are able to strategically enhance the Chambers they represent.

Chamber CEO continues education

Bob Landon with Landon Winery is the current Chairman of the Board until October 22, when William Morgan with Lone Star Credit Union will become the next Board Chairman.

Chamber CEO, Byron Taylor, escorts each incoming Chairman to the Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives Annual Chairman Conference. This conference helps each new Chairman of the Board get acclimated to their role in the coming year. Taylor and Morgan will attend the upcoming conference on October 18 in Georgetown Texas.

Census data determines your representation in Congress and are used to redraw boundaries of congressional and state legislative districts. It also informs the allocation of funding for your community’s public resources (e.g., roads, hospitals, schools, senior centers). In fact, more than $675 billion in federal funding is distributed each year to communities across the country based on census data.

To help your community thrive, it’s important that you encourage everyone to participate in the 2020 Census. The vital statistical data generated by the census helps make informed decisions for economic development and business in your area.

In 2010, more than one million children were undercounted. In 2020, we need to avoid that and ensure schools receive their fair share of funding.

When it comes to owners of certified public accounting  firms, there is one in Hunt County

whose original owner has been in the business for 50 years.

Michael Conway has been working with numbers for at least that long, and was recently honored by the State Board of Public Accountancy in Austin with a certificate recognizing such.

It was 25 years ago this year that Conway Company CPAs opened their doors in Greenville. Michael and his son Neil, along with Coleen Smith, are managing partners in the firm. They specialize in assisting startups and service businesses to navigate early pitfalls so they can become successful. They are currently located

at 8910 Wesley Street, Suite D in Greenville. They also opened a location in Rockwall in 2006 at 603 South Goliad Street.

Conway Company CPAs are also avid supporters of the Greenville and Rockwall Chambers of Commerce.

To celebrate their 25 years in Greenville, they are planning an open house on Dec. 5, 2019 from 4-7pm. We at the Greenville Chamber wish to congratulate Conway Company CPAs for their significant contribution to the business landscape of Hunt and Rockwall Counties.

For more information regarding their services or the Fall Open House, contact the Greenville location partner, Coleen Smith, at 903-450-1200.

For the fourth time in two years, the Greenville

Workforce Committee, comprised of Greenville industries, manufacturers, Greenville Board of Development (GBOD) and the Greenville Chamber will be conducting a job fair. The event will take place on October 28 at the Fletcher Warren Civic Center from 9am-2pm in Greenville.

Back in January 2018, GBOD and the Chamber focused with local industries to address collective items that would help these larger employers succeed. The committee addressed multiple items including a job website, reducing duplication, workforce training, career and technical preparation in education and preparing students to better apply for work. Two of the items

that has come from this committee are what is now a spring and fall job fair and a local job website for manufacturers, greenvilleTXjobs.com.

“The first job fair was held on June 1, 2018. What the committee determined after this first successful event is that employers would like to interview potential students before they graduate,” said Byron Taylor, CEO of the Greenville Chamber. The next job fair was held in October of 2018. The committee is now on a rotation of an April and October job fair annually. Each event has attracted approximately 28 major Greenville employers and no fewer than 400 applicants. The newest addition to the job fair has been opening up the Career and

Technical Education Center students from Greenville ISD to come through in their own time slot to get an understanding of the employers and the job market here locally. The goal is to give these students the advantage of succession planning as they prepare themselves to begin to think about an employment plan after education.

Also, with the help of John Dickson, Business Development Manager at GBOD, a job website

has been created. GreenvilleTXjobs.com is an online tool for applicants to easily find job openings at many of the manufacturing and industrial employers in Greenville. Applicants may go to the website and directly click on the  hiring websites of many local companies.

For specifics related to the job fair or the job website, please contact the Greenville Chamber at 903-455-1510.

Investigators said Wednesday charges filed against Chad and Paula Michele Tanner were the result of multiple complaints of money missing from the Commerce E-Corps.

The Hunt County Office of Homeland Security released a statement concerning the Tanner’s arrests Monday night, follow-ing indictments issued Sept. 13 from the Hunt County grand jury.

The office indicated the investigation stemmed from several complaints from differ-ent persons and entities that there seemed to be a misuse of money belonging to the Com-merce E-Corps.

Chad Lee Tanner, 50, and his wife Paula Michele Tanner, 46, were indicted on one count of theft of property between $2,500 and $30,000 from the agency.

According to the statement David Alexander, Hunt County Homeland Security investigator, said he inter-viewed numerous persons inside and outside the organization and reviewed a great amount of financial reports, ex-penditures, bank statements and other documents.

Chad Tanner had been elected the Chief of Commerce E-Corps in Decem-ber 2017 and Paula Tanner Secretary/Treasurer at the same time and they

Officials hoping tropical storm breaks droughtby brad Kellar

herAld-bANNer stAff

Much of Northeast Texas, includ-ing many of the counties adjacent to Hunt County, were under bans on outdoor burning as of Wednes-day afternoon, due to the increas-ing drought conditions.

The status of those prohibitions, and the extent of the drought itself, will depend on Tropical Storm

Imelda’s path this week. Imelda crossed over Houston Wednesday morning and was expected to move north into East Texas.

As of Wednesday, burn bans were in place in Collin, Fannin, Kaufman and Rockwall counties. Fannin County became the 173rd Texas County to institute a ban on outdoor burning Tuesday after-noon.

Hunt County Director of Home-

land Security/Emergency Manage-ment/Fire Marshal Richard Hill said whether Hunt County joins the club will depend on how much rain Imelda brings.

“We are keeping out fingers crossed,” Hill said.

Bandy to bring classic honky tonk music to town

by Travis hairgrove

herAld-bANNer stAff

Known for singing country songs of the “cheating and drinking” variety and his string of Billboard Top 10 hits throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s, Moe Bandy will be perform-ing in Greenville at the Texan Theater Sunday.

In hits like “Bandy The Ro-deo Clown,” “Hank Williams, You Wrote My Life,” “It’s A

Cheatin’ Situation,” “I Cheat-ed Me Right Out of You,” and “She’s Not Really Cheatin’ (She’s Just Gettin’ Even), and in tracks he recorded with Joe Stampley, like “Just Good Ol’ Boys” and “Holding the Bag,” many of the characters in Bandy’s songs live the honky tonk lifestyle of infidelity followed by despair or shrug-ging off yesterday’s lapses of
