Victor Challenge

This Challenge is produced by 3rd Vale of Leven Guides, with the aim of raising funds for their summer camp in July 2015 and for other events. We held a successful ‘Hunger Games’ themed residential weekend in April 2014 and the idea to produce a Challenge Badge came from there.

The Challenge is aimed primarily at Guides and Senior Section however it can be used by Brownies and there are activities which could be used by Rainbows. The Challenge can also be used by Lones, as many of the activities can be undertaken individually.

The Challenge can be completed as part of normal unit meetings or over the course of a residential activity; the length of which can be determined by the girls and unit teams.

The Challenge is divided into three Sections, as follows:-

Section 1: PanemSection 2: The GamesSection 3: Rebellion

In order to achieve the Challenge Badge we suggest that as a minimum the following should be completed:-

- Guides should complete five activities from Section 1 and two activities from both Section 2 and 3.

- Senior Section members should complete eight activities from Section 1 and three activities from both Section 2 and 3.

- Adult Members should complete eight activities from Section 1 and three activities from both Section 2 and 3 and one additional activity from any Section.

3rd Vale of Leven Guides – Victor Challenge

2

If Brownies are completing the Challenge then we suggest that they do four activities from Section 1 and one activity from both Section 2 and 3. If Rainbow leaders are wishing to do the challenge with their Unit then there is no set minimum and it is for the leader to determine what is appropriate for their Unit.

Once you have completed the suggested number of activities then you have become a Victor and you have earned your badge. These can be ordered using the form at the end of the Challenge Pack.

This Challenge Pack has been designed with the Five Essentials in mind.

This resource is only a starting point and you should feel free to adapt and expand activities to suit your own needs.

Many of the activity ideas can be carried forward to allow the participants to achieve other badges offered by the different section programmes. There is a table within the Appendix which lists parts of the section programmes which have been identified as having a link to the activities within this Challenge Pack. This list is not exhaustive.

Please make use of other available Girlguiding resources.

The Appendix also includes an example planning sheet to assist you and also more information for some of the activity ideas.

We hope you enjoy our Challenge. Good Luck and ‘May the Odds be ever in your Favour’.

‘Hunger Games’ is a registered trademark of Suzanne Collins.

Section 1: ‘PANEM’

This Section is divided into Districts. Each District has activities associated with its industry. In order to get the best overview of ‘Panem’ we suggest that you complete activities from a number of different Districts.

The Capitol

An outrageous sense of style and fashion is important to those who live in the Capitol. Those who live in the Capitol are of course exempt from the ‘Hunger Games’ and are simply the willing spectators.

1. Be a Gamesmaker and design an Arena for the next ‘Hunger Games’. Think about what type of Arena it will be. Will it be set in a forest, around water, in a desert? The choice is yours. You can make a model of your Arena using materials of your choice.

2. The stylists and preparation teams also live in the Capitol. Design an outfit for the Tribute Parade. Select a District of your choice and use materials which reflect that District and what it is known for. Why not host your own Tribute Parade and make up the outfits and put on a show?

3. Those who live in the Capitol pick a Tribute that they want to win and often send them items to help them in the Games. Host a race night to raise money for your Unit/District or some other cause.

District One

This is the wealthiest of Districts in ‘Panem’. It makes the luxury items for the Capitol. The Tributes from District One generally train for the ‘Hunger Games’ and are known as Careers.

1. With names like Glimmer and Marvel, there is an element of glamour associated with District One. Have a pamper night and think about what your name would be if you were born in District One.

3rd Vale of Leven Guides – Victor Challenge

4

2. One of the jobs offered in District One is Perfumer. Have a go at making your own beauty product e.g. perfume, lip gloss, bath bomb, and body scrub.

3. District One is known for its diamonds and other jewels. Have a go at making your own jewellery. There are lots of ways you can make jewellery. You could use beads, you could make paper beads or why not use everyday objects like pasta or bottle tops.

District Two

This is another of the wealthy Districts and also sends Careers into the Arena. They are known for their stonework. There are mines in District Two but these are Graphite mines. District One is said to turn the Graphite into Diamonds. District Two is also where the majority of the Peacekeepers come from.

1. Using stones or rocks make something of beauty just as the Graphite is transformed into Diamonds. You can be as creative as you want and use whatever materials you like. Paints, glue and sequins are a good starting point.

2. Using Lego © or another materials construct a building. To make it more interesting why not see which building can best withstand attempts by the other teams/Tributes to destroy it within a set time and sticking to agreed rules.

3. Organise a game of Dodgeball and see if you can keep the other Districts under control. Those who are throwing the ball are the Peacekeepers and they keep control of the District by eliminating the others. A variation of Dodgeball is prisoner ball. See the Appendix.

District Three

This is the technological District. If you live here you may become an Engineer, a Physicist or an Inventor. District Three manufactures the computers and televisions used in ‘Panem’.

1. Become an engineer and construct a bridge, using edible materials of your choice, which can support a toy car.

3rd Vale of Leven Guides – Victor Challenge

5

2. As District Three makes televisions, make a short advert about the upcoming ‘Hunger Games’. You can chose to film the advert or you can present it live to the other groups/Tributes.

3. Invent a gadget which you think would be helpful to a Tribute in the ‘Hunger Games’. Using recyclable materials make the gadget and then present it and its use.

District Four

This District is famous for fishing and therefore seafood. The Tributes from District Four are handy with nets and spears.

1. Have a go at making sushi – you can make traditional sushi using rice, seaweed and fish or why not try and find some alternatives but present it like sushi, for example different sweets act as great alternatives to traditional sushi.

2. Being able to swim is an essential skill in District Four. Do one of the following :- take part in a Swimathon, arrange a trip to the local swimming pool, try water-polo, complete your Bronze medallion or other lifesaving qualification.

3. A boat is also often another essential element for fishing. Do one of the following: - take a trip on a boat (ferry, pleasure cruise etc), learn about knots and demonstrate your new skills or complete a RYA qualification.

District Five

District Five’s industry is power and electricity. Learn more about power and electricity but doing one of the following:-

1. Learn about different power sources and the effect and impact upon the environment. Look at the difference between ‘clean’ and ‘dirty’ energy sources. For fun why not conduct a Unit meeting without using any electricity or gas.

3rd Vale of Leven Guides – Victor Challenge

6

2. We need ‘power’ and ‘energy’ to complete our day to day tasks. Research superfoods and the benefits to our body. Create a healthy menu for one of your main meals and have a go at making it. Be prepared to discuss the benefits and the choices that you have made.

3. Generate your own electricity and use it to power something. For example conduct a basic circuit using a battery, wires and a lightbulb to make the light bulb light up. Or, have a go at correctly and safely wiring a plug.

District Six

District Six is responsible for the transportation in ‘Panem’.

1. Research and where possible undertake a journey using 3 different modes of transport – be prepared to research costs, timetables and any restrictions.

2. Go go-karting.

3. Learn about the transport through the ages and where possible visit your local Transport Museum.

District Seven

District Seven is the lumber or wood District.

1. Visit your local nature reserve and identify as many different trees as possible, take it further by researching what the wood, fruits, nuts etc are often used for.

2. Take part in a tree planting project.

3. Make something out of wood e.g. using a pyrography iron or have a carpenter visit and explain some woodworking techniques and if possible have a go yourself.

3rd Vale of Leven Guides – Victor Challenge

7

District Eight

District Eight is responsible for the textile and clothing industry in ‘Panem’.

1. Using weaving, sewing, knitting or crochet make an item which has a practical use.

2. Learn about the history of textiles and/or fashion and present your findings in an interesting way.

3. Learn about fair trade and fair work practices. Write to someone in power about what you have found out and what changes you would like to see happen.

District Nine

This District grows the grain which sustains ‘Panem’.

1. Try and make bread. There are lots of different types of bread. Some people have special dietary needs, for example the bread needs to be gluten free. If someone in your team, group or unit follows a special diet as far as possible make a bread which they can also eat.

2. Look at the importance that grain plays in our diets. Look at your own diets and see whether you eat enough grain. Look at diets in other countries and compare it to your diet.

3. Make a bird feeder or bird house

District Ten

This District is responsible for the livestock, mainly the cows in ‘Panem’.

1. Take a visit to a local farm, animal park or zoo.

2. Learn more about endangered animals and look at what you can do to help.

3rd Vale of Leven Guides – Victor Challenge

8

3. Play an animal themed game. See Appendix for some ideas.

District Eleven

This District is the agricultural hub of ‘Panem’. They grow much more than the grain grown in District Nine.

1. Undertake a growing project – i.e. Grow Wild or your own project.

2. Keep a food diary for a week and think about where your food comes from, the distance it may have travelled and then have a discussion. In particular, think about the impact ‘food miles’ have on the environment and what you can maybe do to reduce the impact.

3. Take a trip to a ‘pick your own’ farm

District Twelve

This is of course where Katniss comes from. District 12 is known for its coal mining. Coal mining is very dangerous in ‘Panem’. There are often explosions and collapses.

1. Learn about coal mining in the UK and if possible visit a Mining museum.

2. Prepare a ‘dig’ for a younger section. See Appendix for further ideas.

3. Landmines cause devastation, find out about child soldiers and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Hold a Children’s Rights night. For some ideas, see Right Now!

District Thirteen

The nuclear district! This District was long thought destroyed and uninhabitable but as we find out that’s not the case.

3rd Vale of Leven Guides – Victor Challenge

9

1. Learn about nuclear energy and its uses.

2. District Thirteen is underground find out and where possible visit one of the following: - vaults, dungeons, bunkers or shelters. If you are unable to visit a shelter, have a go at thinking about what you would take with you into a shelter.

3. Those living in District Thirteen are not allowed to have pets. You decide to break the rules and you adopt an egg. Look after your egg over a day, two days or even better a weekend. Your egg needs to be fed, played with, washed and loved just like any pet. Keep a diary of what you and your egg have been up to.

Section 2 - The Games

Here is where you will see whether you would be able to survive the Arena

NB The intention of this section is to not injure, maim or kill anyone during the completion of these challenges

1. Katniss is known for her skills with a bow and arrow: - take part in an archery session

2. Peeta is known for his skills with camouflage: - test your own skills by making a hidden shelter or using make-up try and blend into your surroundings

3. In the Arena the Tributes have to be aware of hidden dangers particularly when it comes to food sources. Can you tell the difference between edible and poisonous food and plants? Undertake some research.

3rd Vale of Leven Guides – Victor Challenge

10

4. Katniss has to spend some nights sleeping in the trees - she needs to get as high as possible. Test your climbing skills by taking part in a climbing activity such as a climbing wall or aerial assault course

5. Muttations are common in the ‘Hunger Games’, the ‘Mockingjay’ is a muttation, using appropriate materials, make your own muttation. Consider strengths/weaknesses and habitat

6. You are invited to a Feast at the Cornucopia. You are running low on materials and really need to attend. Take part in a night game where the aim is to retrieve hidden items. You must be as quiet as possible or risk being caught and ending your time in the Arena. See Appendix for more ideas.

7. The Arena is water based and to get from base to base you must construct a raft. Take part in a raft building activity (these can be mini rafts or rafts which you can sit on).

8. There are no ovens or hobs in the Arena and you must learn to cook by alternative means, cook something using one of the following methods - open fire, haybox, card board box oven or tin can cooking

9. To avoid your scent being tracked you decide to use the streams and rivers to navigate the Arena - take part in a gorge walking session

10. Katniss' mother is known for using plants and herbs to heal others and Katniss has to employ similar healing skills in the Arena. Find out about natural remedies and have a go at making your own or have a first aid evening

11. Katniss sings a song in the books taught to her by her father but which she can't sing when she is in the District because of the potential dangers. Songs have been used to spread messages, for example through the Underground Railway or old spirituals. Look into songs with messages and compare them with modern music and then have a go at writing and performing your own song to deliver message on any topic you want.

12. Take part in an obstacle course or construct one (making sure to carry out a risk assessment) and then see which team/Tribute can complete it the fastest.

13. Avox are ‘Panem’ residents who have been caught and made examples of. They have had their tongues cut out and are unable to speak. Take part in a sponsored silence event or have a co-

3rd Vale of Leven Guides – Victor Challenge

11

operative games night where you have to overcome certain challenges e.g. learning how to communicate without speaking, having one arm behind your back, being tied to another person etc.

14. Outrun the tracker jackers – play a wide game where you must escape these awful muttations. See Appendix for further ideas.

Section 3 – Rebellion

1. ‘Panem’ is run by a corrupt leader and it comes to pass that the person in charge of the Rebel forces is not the ideal candidate to take over. Think about what it takes to be a leader, identify candidates and host a mock election.

3rd Vale of Leven Guides – Victor Challenge

12

2. The citizens of ‘Panem’ are being deprived of their Human Rights. Carry out some activities to learn more about basic human rights. For more ideas, see Together We Can or Right Now!

3. Each District appears to have their own culture, learn about cultures around the world. Hold an international evening and perhaps try learning a dance from another culture or taste some food from another culture.

4. You need to infiltrate the Capitol – play a wide game which involves capturing territories. See Appendix for more details.

5. During the Rebellion lots of innocent people are injured and doctors are sent in to assist. Learn about organisations like Doctors Without Borders or the Red Cross and perhaps raise money for one of the organisations.

6. During the Rebellion new technology is used to help with the fighting. Rather than Parachute Bombs make some Peace planes and display these at your meeting place or send to a local councillor or politician. These are simply paper aeroplanes with messages of peace displayed on them.

7. Make your own ‘Mockingjay’ or design your own Token which means something to you, your patrol or unit.

8. Katniss is put to trial at the end of the Rebellion. Conduct a mock trial and learn about justice (if possible visit a court).

Activity Ideas

This Challenge Pack is designed with a lot of flexibility to allow you to find out what works best for those taking part.

These are just some ideas, which might be of assistance.

District One

Activity 2:

We have made lip balm, soap and bath bombs on a number of occasions with our unit. We have tried a few different methods.

3rd Vale of Leven Guides – Victor Challenge

20

Lip Balm we preferred the Beeswax method to the Petroleum Jelly method. The Petroleum Jelly method requires really, really warm water to clean the bowls etc. at the end if you want to use them again! The great thing about this activity is that if you purchase essential oils, although you only need a small amount you can store them in the guide cupboard and use again.

Ask the girls to save up their old lip balm tubs but if that’s not possible you can pick up little tubs fairly easily at supermarkets. The snap and go trays used when weaning babies work great.

Silicone cupcake moulds are really great for bath bomb moulds.

The first time we made soap and lip balm we bought kits on Ebay. We were able to re-use the moulds and some of the extras which came with the kits and the instructions. The next time we just bought what had run out. Hobbycraft sells most items but definitely look on the internet for bargains.

This is a link to a pinterest board with a few pins to get you started with this activity:

https://uk.pinterest.com/ruthgallacher/lip-balmsoapscrubsbath-bombs-for-challenge-badge/

Activity 3:

This is really simple activity. You can use anything that you want to make the jewellery. Use up old craft bits and pieces from the cupboard. You can use stuff you would be throwing out.

But for something a little bit more challenging and teach the girls a new skill, try paper beads. It makes the activity a bit longer because of the preparation time it needs. Using this method is probably more suited to Guides and Senior Section.

Below is a link to a board with some tutorials and ideas:

https://uk.pinterest.com/ruthgallacher/jewellery-activity-for-challenge-badge/

District Two

Activity 1:

3rd Vale of Leven Guides – Victor Challenge

21

Again this is another really simple activity, which is in expensive. If you did not want to use rocks/stones, why not use air drying clay?

But painted rocks/stones can be really effective.

Again just some ideas:

https://uk.pinterest.com/ruthgallacher/painted-stones-for-challenge-badge/

Activity 3: Prisoner Ball

Prisoner Ball (my guides call it ‘Escape from Azkaban’ as the older ones first played it at a ‘Harry Potter’ themed camp)

It can be played inside or outside. The important thing is to clearly define the boundaries, the most important being the centre line and the prison lines.

You split the group into two teams – equal numbers is best but if it is not possible and you have one more in one team it is not the end of the world. It is important to try and have the teams be as mixed as possible in terms of age and size.

The game is played on a rectangular area marked in some way down the centre – we sometimes tie string across the centre of the hall but you could use chalk to mark a line if inside or cones if you are outside.

One team on each side of the centre line. You can play with more than one ball, but it is best to start off with just the one and see how it is going.

Throw in the ball. Teams have to try and get it. Then the premise is pretty similar to traditional dodgeball in that you get people ‘out’ by hitting them with the ball. We say below the waist and we have an additional rule that the ball cannot have bounced and then hit the person. If the ball hits you then you have to go to prison, which is at the back of your opposing team.

In order to get out of prison, your team have to try and get you the ball. It is important to note that the team that are keeping you

3rd Vale of Leven Guides – Victor Challenge

22

prisoner are not allowed to enter the prison area, so if a ball comes into the prison that is the prisoner(s) ball.

The prisoner then has to hit a member of the opposing team in order to get out. If they do, they are free to play and the person who was hit is then in prison.

The winning team is the team who has captured the most members of the opposing team when time is called.

You can allow/disallow travelling with the ball. It depends on your girls. If you don’t allow travelling it sometimes allow for better teamwork as they need to pass between themselves to achieve the best outcome.

District Three

Activity 1:

What you use for this activity is up to you. You will have to be aware of any allergies when planning this activity.

Leaders should supply the toy car so that they are all the same size and weight to keep it fair.

This is just one idea:

District Four

Activity 1:

Even if you do not do this activity for the Challenge it is a great one for international nights. With the WSJ2015 taking place in Japan it is something to think about.

3rd Vale of Leven Guides – Victor Challenge

23

This board has a few ideas. The ingredients can be found in the supermarkets. Basics will be fruit winders, marshmallows and jelly sweets.

https://uk.pinterest.com/ruthgallacher/candy-sushi/

Activity 3:

Tying knots used to be an essential guiding skill. If you can get your hands on an old Guide Handbook then there is lots in there to get you started. Otherwise you can buy the little pocket size guide to knots from guiding.

We have in the past tied different knots and then glued them onto plain frames.

District Five

Activity 3:

This is a great activity to get girls interested in Science. If possible you should try and get a female scientist in to visit and explore with the girls. There are sure to be people within your Districts/Divisions/Counties/Regions who would be willing to share their experiences.

There is a lot online about STEM and engaging girls.

These are just a few examples of some circuits which the girls could do:

https://uk.pinterest.com/ruthgallacher/electricty-board-challenge-badge/

District 10

Activity 3:

We are sure that you know lots of animal themed games. Here are just a few more.

FARMERS AND COWS ( http://geckotheguideleader.weebly.com/games.html )

Equipment:

Nil

3rd Vale of Leven Guides – Victor Challenge

24

Explanation:

Two girls are chosen to be the Farmers, and the rest of the unit are the Cows.  First run:

All the Cows line up against one wall and on the word "go" they have to run to the opposite wall.  Any girls that are tagged by the Farmers have to stand still where they were tagged.  The remaining Cows wait at the opposite wall.

Second run:On the word "go" the Cows try to run back to the original wall without being caught by the Farmers.  The girls that were tagged in the first run are "Fence Posts" (stage 1) and have to stand perfectly still with their arms by their sides.  if a Cow runs into a Fence Post then they are 'tagged' and must stand still.

Third run:On the third run, those who have been Fence Posts become "Fences" (stage 2) and have their arms spread out.  Those who were tagged in the second run are now Fence Posts.  Any new Cows who are tagged by either the Farmers, the Fences or the Fence Posts must stand still where they were tagged.

Fourth run:Those who were Fences during the third run now become "Electric Fences" (stage 3 - final stage) and can move their arms and body around as long as their feet stay still.  Those who were Fence Posts become Fences, and those who were tagged become Fence Posts.

Fifth run:Those who were Electric Fences stay as Electric Fences, those who were Fences become Electric Fences and so on...

The game ends when only two girls are left running.  They become the two new Farmers and the game starts again.

ANIMAL FAMILIES ( http://geckotheguideleader.weebly.com/games.html )

Equipment:Nil.Explanation:Split the girls into three equally-sized groups.  One group is the Dads, one group is the Mums and one group is the Babies.  Allocate each girl in the group an animal name (best animals are those with distinctive sounds) - make sure exactly the same animals are used for each group.  Start each group from a different corner of the hall.  The girls have to make their animal noise and find the other two members of their family.  Girls have to make their noises different enough to show whether they are Dad, Mum or Baby - and when they have found their family, they need to sit down in order of Dad, Mum, Baby.  They are not allowed to make any noises other than that of their animal.

The basic premise for this activity is sensory bins. Hide objects in sand, polystyrene balls, tubs of dirt, shaving foam …the options are endless. Then organise for a younger section to find the items.

You can have them do it blindfolded where they have to guess the items. You can have them do it with their eyes open but then ask them after a set period to remember what they found.

Make it fun. Link it to a theme which they will understand and enjoy.

The Games

Activity 2:

If doing the make-up activity remember to check about allergies or sensitivities and use disposable brushes and pads for hygiene reasons.

For the den activity, if you know anyone with a military background perhaps they could be called upon to provide some assistance.

Remind the girls if they are doing this outside that they should not remove living branches etc. from trees or bushes but they should use materials which are lying around.

If doing this outside, remember to tidy up and leave no trace.

Activity 3.

A risk assessment should be carried out for this activity. We would not suggest the girls actually eat the items that they find unless you are absolutely certain that they are safe. As with Activity 3 if you can get someone with experience/skills in to speak with the girls that will help take this forward.

In the meantime here is a starting point.

Ideas for Wide Games can be found all over the internet and guiding has some good publications.

Our tip for a successful night wide game is Glowsticks! They love them! At our ‘Hunger Games’ themed residential, we hid different coloured glow sticks around the field. In their teams they had to find as many glowsticks as possible. The conditions were they had to all stay together and when time was called they had to come into base together.

We assigned different points to the different colours of glowsticks (the thin ones you can make into bracelets). The team with the most points was the winner.

To make it even more exciting for them we left a packet of sweets with a large glowstick – not the thin ones you make into bracelets. At the outset we said there was one special glowstick per team and that they should only bring back the one. We said points would be deducted if any cheating.

If using glowsticks, remember how many you have put out and make sure you get them all back in. They can be a danger to wildlife.

Taking a look through old Activates or guiding Magazines will give you instructions but if you do not have time for that, here is a link

Activity 10.

We have all heard of ‘old wives’ tales’ and we will know a few ourselves that we swear by.

With this activity, it is important to check for allergies if you intend to put anything into practice.

Do your own research but here is some bits to get you started.

Activity 11:

You might not think that you know any songs used to send messages, for example through the Underground Railroad but you would be surprised. ‘Swing Low Sweet Chariot’ is one such song.

This website is excellent and provides some background and meaning to some songs.

Activity 14:

Again there are lots of wide games and you can adapt your favourite to suit.

For one linked to the idea of the Trackerjacker, the following work well:-

1. One person starts of as the Trackerjacker and they must catch the others. Once they catch someone they must join hands and try to catch others. Only the people at either end of the Trackerjacker line can catch the others. The Victor is the last person who has not been stung by the Trackerjacker. This game requires the Trackerjackers to co-operate!

2. An adapted game of ‘Scarf tag’. The group is split into two groups. Find a way to differentiate the two teams. One team is the swarm of Trackerjackers and the other team the Tributes. Every player has a neckie tucked into the back of their trousers/shorts like a tail(if you don’t have neckies plan to have scraps of material available). Each team has a base. The aim is for the Trackerjackers to catch all the Tributes by pulling their tail. Once they do that the Tribute needs to go back to the Trackerjackers’ base. The Tributes can eliminate the Trackerjackers by removing their tails and the Trackerjackers go back to the Tributes’ base. The winning team is the team with the most players at the end. You can add in an extra rule that someone can come back into play if a member of their team is able to get into the opposing base without being caught themselves and give them a tail.

Activity 4: The most obvious game for this activity is ‘Capture the Flag’ http://www.activityvillage.co.uk/capture-the-flag
