THE CONCEPTEventually the world will run out of oil. And we will be left with a simple choice, survive or perish. But as we can see from the evolution of man, we have not been designed to perish, we have been designed to adapt to the environment that we are in. We will nd a solution to our problems.

There are many dierent solutions to this problem, but the one that is in use even today in our city streets is pedal power. While the streets are full of cars not going anywhere consuming natural resources at a stand still, the commuter on the pedal powered vehicle is cursing through the trac. We can capture this technology and modify it, so that it can services many other purposes. With the intro-duction of pedal power it will cause people to evaluate what they really need to have with them all the time. We really don’t need all things we carry with us in the car, so by reducing the amount of things we think we need we can all adapt to pedal power.

Where would Australia be without its trade’s men? The answer is no where, the desk your sitting at, the carpet under your feet, the four walls around you and the roof over your head where all built by the humble tradey. This group of people is the one that I have decided to base my concept on for the Human Powered Vehicle. The trade’s man need to be mobile to get around even if it’s a small area they work in. It would take at least 3 times as long to carry all their tools to a site than it would be to use the HPV. Of course like I said earlier people will need to adapt to pedal power. The use of site safes would become a must as not all tools could be carried in the HPV, it would be far too heavy.

My Human Powered Vehicle will be designed with adequate storage for tools in the back as well as the capacity to carry some of those larger items, in the rear. Also with comfort in the mind the seating style will be half way between recumbent and upright, to give a more comfortable ride, much like the one you would get in a car. It will also be styled in a way that will appeal to the trade’s man. If we want people to adapt to pedal power easily then they need to want to use the product, so it will be fashioned in a way reminiscent of a classic Holden creation like a Maloo, or a KTM bike.

REASONEventually we will begin to run out of natural resources such as oil. Due to the diminished supply prices of oil-based products will rise, and the average person will no longer be able to afford to refuel their car.

SOLUTIONThe solution is clear. The only way to preserve the remaining oil is to look for other renewable sources of transportation. The way forward is pedal power, the energy of the human.

HUMAN POWERThe Human Powered Vehicle or HPV as it is know is the answer. This HPV is designed for the trade’s man. The seating style is comfortable for those early mornings; the design is stylish and doesn’t look like a science project. There is plenty of storage in the rear for tools and other gear as well as the capacity to carry larger items once the boot lid is removed.
