‘We’re unique... Young... Unrivalled... Smashing!’Salford 1959 – 17-year-old Jo is desperate to break free from her vulgar, wayward and manhunting mother, Helen.

Resilient and feisty, Jo’s instinct for survival and happiness leads her to a taste of honey when she falls in love with Jimmy, a black sailor on shore leave. Abandoned by her mother and left to cope on her own, Jo’s courage is tested yet again when Jimmy returns to sea, and she discovers she’s pregnant.

Defiant in the face of convention, Jo moves in with her friend Geoff, a young art student, who assumes the role of surrogate father to her unborn child. As their relationship deepens, Jo discovers that her independent spirit is both her torment and her salvation.

A Taste of Honey is Mark Babych’s debut production as Hull Truck Theatre’s new Artistic Director

Witty, painful and raw, Shelagh Delaney’s honest portrayal of a teenage girl’s tempestuous relationship with her wayward mother is an inspirational classic that has influenced a generation of writers and artists from Morrissey to Amanda Whittington. What is really special about this play is the authenticity of her writing and how she captures the ordinary and makes it extraordinary.

A heartbreaking and hilarious production that pulses with energy, love, loss and hope.

‘This is the best holiday I have ever ever ever... Of all the holidays I have ever had and put them all together none of them would be as wonderful as this one.’

Alem is fourteen, in London with his father on the best holiday he has ever had, only then the unthinkable happens, he awakes to find himself alone, a stranger in an unfamiliar country. Overnight he has become a refugee. As a violent civil war rages back home, Alem’s Ethiopian father and Eritrean mother make the heartbreaking decision to leave him in London, on his own but hopefully safe at last. Alem’s new life brings with it new challenges - from court hearings to children’s homes to life-changing friendships and loving foster families. Amidst this turmoil Alem determines to take control, to transcend his refugee label, to become Alem Kelo - an African, a Peacemaker and no longer just a Refugee Boy.

TEMPEST BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE DIRECTOR GEOFF BULLEN

An old man is comatose and near death...the play of The Tempest is his last living second, a time in which his loss is assuaged and his enemies forgiven. With an enchanting mesh of mime, masking, movement, and the music of voice, the two actors conjure storms and apparitions, lay bare treasons and counterplot, and finally transport you to a ‘brave new world’ of love and reconciliation. Minimal, magical & not to be missed.

She falls for the butcher and is about to get the chop when Rodney the wild boar comes to her rescue. Amidst yodelling frogs, blues-singing cows, Hollywood hotdogs and a fascist rally in a pigsty, HK Gruber’s Gloria - A Pigtale takes a zany sideswipe at right-wing politics.Performed by five human sausages and a big band set in a burlesque butcher’s shop, this cabaret opera mixes varied musical styles with dark comedy.

I love the vision for this company – enjoyable, adventurous and imaginative, their work stretches the boundaries of what opera can be and who it is for.Artistic Director - Mark Babych

FOLLOW THE HERRING - GET UP AND TIE YOUR FINGERSWRITTEN BY ANN COBURN VOCAL SCORE BY KAREN WIMHURST

Spring 1881 is tipping over into summer and everyone is waiting for the silver darlings, the migrating herring, on which all their livelihoods depend.

Gutting, salting and packing the herring into barrels is women’s work. So, young Molly must learn to tie her fingers if she’s going to join her mother, the obsessive Jean, and their fun-loving neighbour, Janet, as the third member of their gutting crew. But it is another tie, that between a mother and a daughter, that is at the heart of this award-winning play.

Set against the real storm that sent 129 gallant Eyemouth fishermen to a watery grave, this is a deeply affecting tale of three courageous women, reworked to include a vocal soundscape performed by the Freedom Chorus.

Get Up and Tie Your Fingers is part of Follow the Herring, a unique national touring project that combines theatre and visual arts in an atmospheric and compelling journey down the east coast of the UK.

The project welcomes the quirky and eye-catching Coat for a Boat knitted boat exhibition to Hull. Join us in putting a local stamp of the exhibition by knitting herring, seagulls or local landmarks to go alongside. Visit the website to find out how to get involved and download a herring knitting pattern.

TO WHET YOUR APPETITE FOR A TASTE OF HONEY, OUR FILM SEASON DELVES INTO A GOLDEN AGE OF BRITISH CINEMA HISTORY. With theatre’s shift towards social realism proving immensely popular with post-war audiences, the great directors of the late 1950s seized upon the works of playwrights such as John Osborne (Look Back in Anger) and Shelagh Delaney, as well as writers such as Alan Sillitoe (Saturday Night & Sunday Morning), David Storey (This Sporting Life) and Keith Waterhouse (Billy Liar), turning them into films that, like the works that inspired them, still stand the test of time today.

Join our Associate Director Nick Lane for an introduction to these classic kitchen sink dramas and a discussion of their relationship to our headline production A Taste of Honey.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN DOCUMENTARYInspired by the Choose Your Own Adventure phenomenon of the 1980s, Choose Your Own Documentary tells the true story of Nathan Penlington’s discovery of a diary and his attempts to unravel its many mysteries. Part stand-up, part film documentary and part spoken word, it’s a unique and compelling interactive experience in which the audience plays the most important role.

RICHARD HERRINGWE’RE ALL GOING TO DIEHerring’s tenth consecutive stand-up show tackles the undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveller returns (apart from Jesus and that canoe bloke). Is death a tragedy or an excuse to have an extended lie-in? Death is inevitable, so let’s laugh in its face while our hearts still beat and our jaws are still attached.

RUSSELL KANESMALLNESS What is it with us and smallness? We Brits love it – being tiny but fierce, close but distant. Join Russell as he shares his thoughts about smallness; on keeping things small when life gets big. Winner of multiple accolades, including the 2010 Edinburgh Comedy Award, he’s guaranteed to bring big laughs in this celebration of all things miniature.

MILES JUPP

Making a return to stand-up and going on his first live UK tour since the hugely successful Fibber In The Heat. In this show Miles will be discussing/ranting/describing: himself, you, domestic imprisonment, fatherhood, having to have opinions, hot drinks, the bloody government, bad balance, housing, ill health, the ageing process, navigation, other people’s pants and, inevitably, a number of other things.
