I t i s customary to ' P r o f i l e ' the R e t i r i n g E d i t o r o f
FELIX. A f t e r a l l , the E d i t o r , whi le i n o f f i c e , can
have cons iderab le in f l uence over the Union: h i s views
are as important as those o f most Union o f f i c e r s . Thus
i t comes about that Stephen H. Wearne (the H. i s s a i d t o
stand for Hobft) faces the o rdea l o f exposure by an u n
f l a t t e r i n g b iographer .
S. H . W. spent an unse t t l ed ea r l y l i f e at boarding
school and with r e l a t i o n s , developing a cons iderab le
degree o f independence and a d a p t a b i l i t y . Owning nowhere
as home, he chooses London as the only p lace where he i s
r e a l l y comfortable . Apprent iced at 16 to the De
H a v i l l a n d Schoo l , he l e f t a f t e r 7 months to become an
a r t i c l e d apprent ice t o a London f i r m . H i s factory ex
per iences showed him some o f the f r u s t r a t i o n s o f 'shop
work, and gave h i s p o l i t i c s a t i l t from t h e i r r i g h t wing
p u b l i c school t endenc ies . He d i d part t ime studying at
a t e c h n i c a l c o l l e g e , from where he won a scho larsh ip to
Woolwich P o l y t e c h n i c , a f t e r having the unusual e x p e r i
ence o f be ing Union Sec re ta ry , and winding up a Union
at the end o f i t s emergency (war) f u l l - t i m e student
support . At Woolwich he rose to l s t C lass Honours by
way o f magazine E d i t o r , V i c e - P r e s i d e n t , ( s inecure ) and
var ious s o c i a l c lub j obs . He wrote a radio s c r i p t for
Russian consumption t e l l i n g of the l i f e and prospects
o f an E n g l i s h t e c h n i c a l s tudent . T r ave l s i n F rance ,
Norway and Sweden produced a book o f remeniscences, u n
pub l i shed as y e t .
Back i n o f f i c e work, he found that h i s heart was i n
hyd r au l i c s so he got a Bursary to G u i l d s , and duly
obtained h i s D . I . C . He wrote a report f o r the t e c h n i
c a l p ress on h i s Spanish water power vac . work i n ' 5 1 ,
but denies having fu r ther ambit ion i n the s c i e n t i f i c
j o u r n a l i s t l i n e .
At I . C . , he d i d n ' t l i k e be ing a f r e she r , so he stayed
out o f t h i n g s u n t i l h i s eye was caught by a FELIX appeal
for l abour . He j o ined as a w r i t e r , and a p rod ig ious
volume o f work has s ince f a l l e n from h i s pen. H i s prose
i s " d i s t i n c t i v e and even unpo l i shed " according to h i s
own d e s c r i p t i o n , but he a l so uses h i s ea r l y draughtsman
ship t r a i n i n g t o good account . Maps and head l ines are
often h i s work. For l i g h t a r t i c l e s he uses the
pseudonym "Imp", whi le h i s more ser ious work i s charac
t e r i s e d by a d i sp l ay o f semicolons; a hsb i t which the
new E d i t o r has caught from him.
I t was i n e v i t a b l e t h a t he should become E d i t o r ; and
at the beginning o f t h i s sess ion i t was n a t u r a l that he
should take the job a second t ime to organise the
wreckage o f the l a s t Board, a f t e r the disappearance of
the E d . E l e c t . He confesses to f i n d i n g FHLIX E d i t i n g
f r u s t r a t i n g ; there i s too much managing to be done;
not enough w r i t i n g and too much r o u t i n e .
He i s a keen boat-clubman. A f t e r 2 weeks as cox
(no prev ious experience) he was thrown out o f the
Gu i lds '51 Lowry crew, but t h i s year was i n i t and won.
Fond o f D e l i u s , Mozart , Brahms, Josh . White, and many
others ,he d i s l i k e s reading novels (Waste o f t i m e " ) ,
has an unuaual ly strong fear o f war, i s i n t e r e s t ed i n
most t h i n g s , i s very s e n s i t i v e to c r i t i c i s m , hates
f ace t ious a r t i c l e s ("they must be w i t t y or s ens ib l e " )
and has an abominable t a s t e i n puns. Un l ike the average
F e l i c i a n Boss , he doesn ' t want to wr i t e a p lay ( "there
are enough a l r e a d y " ) . On ' P r o f i l e s ' he says , with
c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s p r i g h t l i n e s s , "The subject should see i t
before i t i s p r i n t e d . "
H i s Boat Club Dinner account i n t h i s i ssue i s i n t e r

s e l f immensely and we view wi th deep susp i c i on any sug

t h e l e s s , we have no doubt tha t i t i s the most accurate
account ob ta inab l e , such i s our f a i t h i n him. S

The Autumn Term meeting o f the Union Vacat ion Work
Committee was he ld on the 11th November. I t l a s t ed
i j - hours , spending most o f t h i s t ime i n d i scuss ions on
P u b l i c i t y , Insurance, standards o f f i r m s ' t r a i n i n g
programmes and complaints concerning students going
abroad. The meeting was attended by i t s f u l l member
s h i p : Pro fessor Levy, the Chairman, and the eight other
sen ior members of the s t a f f represent ing the departments;
together w i th an F . B . I , r ep resenta t i ve for i ndus t r y ,
the two Union C o u n c i l student members, and the Secretary,
Mr. Newby. F i r s t the Annual Report t o the co l l e ge
Governing Body and I . C . Union C o u n c i l , and an abst ract
form o f i t for press r e l e a s e , were approved, and the
committee then rece ived r epo r t s o f va r i ous d e t a i l s o f
the I n t e r n a t i o n a l and home working of the scheme l a s t
year .
A r i s i n g from c e r t a i n acc idents to a few students , from
var ious c o u n t r i e s , abroad l a s t yea r , the costs and bene
f i t s o f some Insurances were d i scussed . I t was agreed
to recommend s t r o n g l y , but not i n s i s t on , s i cknes s ,
i n d u s t r i a l and t r a v e l insurance to a l l students going
overseas . Since the major i ty o f students r e g i s t e r i n g
for next year had a l ready r e p l i e d , to a suggest ion made
t o each, tha t they were i n t e r e s t e d i n such cover , the
committee were happier about making t h i s a stronger p r o
p o s a l , than they were on how to meet one fur ther l i a b i l i t y :
the need f o r a fund to a s s i s t i n the expenses incur red
fo l l ow ing ser ious or f a t a l i l l n e s s o f the student abroad.
Such would not be covered by the reasonable premiums o f
the recommended insurance , and would cost much more to
cover . A p roposa l was the re fo re made tha t the Union, or
the committee, set up a fund for such (very rare ) cases ,
l e v y i n g a smal l sum, say 2/ - , from each student going
abroad, t o form the fund. The Union representat ives
agreed to put t h i s idea before the Union.
The massive d e t a i l o f the repor t - a copy o f which
i s i n the L i b r a r y - b o i l down to some i n t e r e s t i n g numbers:
a t o t a l o f 488 students went abroad from t h i s country last
summer, from 25 co l l eges and u n i v e r s i t i e s , i n c l u d i n g 119
from I . C . In exchange 602 came i n , B r i t a i n being one o f
the f i v e count r i e s o f the seventeen, tha t r ece ives more
students than they send out . The y e a r ' s t o t a l m u l t i
l a t e r a l exchanges t o t a l l e d 3493.
Near ly 80 reports by I . C . s tudents , o f t h e i r e xpe r i
ences abroad t h i s yea r , have now been eva luated, and these
i n d i c a t e tha t " the r e s u l t s s t i l l obtained are o f a very

T h i s y e a r ' s Boat Club Dinner was he ld two days a f t e r
Morphy Day, and i t was perhaps the fact that your r e
p o r t e r thus d i d not a r r i v e t i r e d from r ac ing and an a f t e r
noon 's beer tha t r e su l t ed i n h i s enjoying i t only i n par ts .
However i t was b e t t e r than l a s t y e a r ' s a l l - t i m e low i n
Refectory d inne r s : the meal was worth what the committee
pa id f o r i t
About 100 attended, i n c l u d i n g some 25 guests. Among
those w i th t h e i r p r i v a t e p i n o f beer - Bar b i t t e r only -
were the v i c t o r i o u s Gu i lds Morphy and Lowry crews. The
Capta in o f Thames R . C . , RR. Swatton, presented them w i th
t h e i r Cups and Pots ; and a l so the winners o f the c lub
smal l -boat competit ions w i th t h e i r cups :
T i z a r d Chal lenge Cup f o r Senior S c u l l s - R .G. Seaman
Webber Chal lenge Cup for J u n i o r S c u l l s - I .M. T i t chener
Lindsay Memorial Cup for Novice S c u l l s - A .R . Saunders
Wynne-Finch Cup for P a i r Oars -
J . P . Gibson & I .M. T i t chene r
The t oa s t t o "The Club"was proposed as u i u a l by
Char les Br i s tow. He r e f e r r ed to the f ine race g iven to
the Gu i lds by the Miie s, and he was g r ea t l y cheered i n
h i s p r a i s e f o r the stout e f f o r t s made by the two R . C . S .
crews against the odds. H i s t a l k l a s t ed the s u r p r i s
i n g l y snappy t ime of 22 minutes. The Cap ta in , P .D.R.
M a l t l e y , took up C h a r l e s ' o u t l i n e of the h i s t o r y and
aims of the Club concerning the past and present year .
H i s survey inc luded the l o s s o f the Walton Thames Cup,
but the r ega in o f the Sabin Tankard - which ghast ly
two -ga l l on (a capac i ty i t s so le v i r t u e ) t rophy was there
on the t a b l e .
The V i c e - C a p t a i n , Geoff Seaman, then proposed "xne
Thames Rowing C lub " - the f o s te r pa rents , taken so much
fo r granted by I . C . , who provide bar and t e a f a c i l i
t i e s for u s , and who i n exchange rece ive the worn-out
I . C . oarsmen when they leave c o l l e g e . "Swatt" i n
r ep l y had only four minutes vo ioe l e f t - from umpir ing
the races on Wednesday - and made a speech i n i t . One
would th ink tha t the Morphy Day behaviour o f I . C . ' s
supporters had never been n o t i c e d .
Pe te r GibBon, the Sec re ta ry , then proposed "The
Guests " , by short re ferences t o each o f them. Derek
Coomber i n rep ly made the popular speech o f the evening
w i th f o r m a l i t i e s p rope r l y s a id and jokes o f no content
we l l t o l d .
The company then r e t i r e d f o r the remaining hour i n
the bar . But the s ing-song was n o i s y . Perhaps
everyone f e l t they had to ca tch up i n the hour an even
ing wasted on t a l k , and were t r y i n g to repeat the good
long even ing ' s vo i c e o f Wednesday. However, by tha t time
your correspondent and o the r , more s e n i o r , coxswains
present were beyond s t e e r i n g the course .

Dear Sir,
There was much written in the last "Felix',
and much has been lately said in the college,
about the lack of I .C, . participation in organised
rags. The obvious solution to this problem is
the institution of an official rag committee. We
know that other col leges possess them and the neerrt'
for one in I . C . . i s self-evident.
I belivve that I speak for a large number of
others, as I know it was definitely intended to
raise the matter at the last Guilds' Union meeting,
had not time intervened. ^
Disorganised riots have their points, but I
am quite certain that organised rags achieve
better results and are usually more entertaining,
and we may be quite certain that without organ
isation we shall not reach our proper position,
consistently at the head of University act ivit ies.
In any case it is time that some of the peace lov
ing officials realised that they cannot prevent
rags by taking no part in them, and that by taking
a hand themselves, they may well guide the rags
away from some of the dreadful consequences they
seem to fear.
To organise a rag inafull union meeting would
be an awkward procedure, impossible in the time
available, and so I propose in open letter that
I.C. should have a full time, democratically elec
ted rag committee, composed of enterprising, and
yet fairly responsible, individuals, for, if such
a thing ever existed in I.C.,,it died some years
back and not even its grave is now in evidence
{'unless some archaeologist would like to sort
about in our history in order to con found me).
Yours Faithfully ,
D. J. HIGSON
Si r ,
It is quite obvious from the general ,feeling
at the last I.C. Union Meeting etc. that the main
body of students within the union are tired of
being repressed annually by s u c c e s s i v e P r e s i d e n t s
on Guy Fawkes day, and are in favour of an I.C..
rag, on a well organised basis.
, 4 s one of your correspondents suggests, what
is wanted now is less talk and more action.
But unfortunately, we cannot have the one
without the other, so I suggest that, (next year
being Coronation year), a committee is immedi
ately set up to examine the possibility of holding,
and the organisat ion of, a charity rag or a car
nival through the streets of London, early in the
New Year. So that this venture should be fos
tered from the top, the committee should be elected
by council from nominations posted on the union
board in the usual way. A rag of this type would
require thorough organisation so no time should be
lost.
If leadership had been forthcoming some weeks
prior to Guy Fawkes day, Harlington would have been
empty and I,C. would have been in their proper
place in the University Rag. As it was, nothing
futher was heard, after all the talk of the
meeting, and hundreds turned to Harlington for want
of something better.
Come on I.C., wake up and let's make 1953 a
really 'Imperial' year. D. INMAN.
Dear Sir,
In the last issue of 'Felix' we wre told
that College newspaers are to give more promi
nence to U.L..activities • a very laudable inten
tion and yet, in the same issue, there is not one
other mention of University of London, except on
the Sports page,
I cannot imagine that nothing worth report
ing has occurred in the other Colleges during the
past fortnight, indeed a report on the two pre
vious U.L. Debates was submitted but not pub
lished, ostensibly due to lack of space, in spite
of a whole page beting devoted to sport each week.
At a time when the only solut ion to the grave
problems which beset the world is a resurgence of
critical and constructive thought in mankind, it
seems more than unfortunate that so much promi
nence is given to those act ivit ies which directly
prevent this ren aissanc e .
Can it be that 'Felix' does not know what its
readers require, or does she copy her policy
directly from the commercial press, or is the
mentality of the students at Imperial College
really no higher than that of readers of the
cheap dailies?
Yours faithfully,
ROGER FISHES ( 2C)
Dear Sir,
The blood transfusion for student societies
announced in the last 'Felix' is likely to prove
to be of the wrong group, with the usual fatal
result. It i s not possible for the student so
cieties to be part of the General Studies Scheme
as it new stands without their losing their iden
tities. If they organise meetings with the help
of the college authorities in finding speakers
they are acting as middlemen instead of primary
pr oducers. In a General Studies lecture the con
ditions are such that the audience is largely
passive; the shortness of the time, the size of
the audience participation which, I suggest,is
a very important feature of student society
meetings .
This difference in character between the
two types of meeting means that they must be kept
separate and some solution, such as starting at
9.30 every day, must be found to preserve both
of them.
Yours etc. ,
i.e.
Sir,
It is now over half a century since Guilds
last purchased a motor-car, (Boanerges 1901), and
we feel that it is time a more modern, yet equally
outstanding mascot is acquired.
We therefore regret the bargain recently
missed by the Motor Club - a B.R.M. would have
made a fitting successor to "Bo", having a
similar standard of reliability but less seating
capacity. A "Bo' body fitted to a B.R.M. chassis
wo uld have overcome this.
Failing this, we undestand that the Dockers '
Gold Daimler is now on the second-hand car market.
' Yours faithfully,
"WHITE ELEPHANTS'
